- 0:00Kill Team Terror on Devlan
- 0:02is here now.
- 0:04>> [music]
- 0:14>> The day has finally come for Victor and
- 0:17I to talk about the Terror on Devlan
- 0:18Kill Team release.
- 0:20Um, we have a lot to say. We're not
- 0:22going to go on and on and on and on and
- 0:24on and on and on, but we are going to go
- 0:26a little bit on.
- 0:27>> We are not putting out a traditional
- 0:29battle report of this. We thought
- 0:30because this is kind of narrativy,
- 0:32because there's a Joy Toy focus, it
- 0:33would be a lot of fun to do it as a
- 0:35stream. So, one day next week, we are
- 0:37going to stream one of the scenarios
- 0:39from the narrative pack Tyranids versus
- 0:41Specter Squad.
- 0:43It'll be a lot of fun. And so, if you'd
- 0:44like to see that, make sure you join our
- 0:46Discord. It's free and all the
- 0:47notifications happen there, so you'll
- 0:49see when we go live. Also, if you can't
- 0:51catch the live stream, we'll leave it up
- 0:52so you can watch it just as any old
- 0:54battle report. Okay, first up, Specter
- 0:56Squad. What do we think? We're not going
- 0:59to do a full rules deep dive. The rules
- 1:01are already on the app. They've been on
- 1:02the app, the Kill Team app for like days
- 1:05now. They don't usually put them out
- 1:07this early, but they're out. So, you can
- 1:09read through the rules at your own pace.
- 1:11We're not going to do that here, but
- 1:13what are your thoughts on this team? So,
- 1:14first of all, I think
- 1:17we've been talking a lot lately about
- 1:18like complexity creep and all that
- 1:20stuff. I think this team has kind of
- 1:23like
- 1:24ups and downs to me. The faction rules,
- 1:27of which there are two, one team-wide
- 1:29camel cloaks, simple, love it. The other
- 1:32one is this whole thing about like
- 1:34interrupting your opponent's
- 1:35activations. It is kind of complicated
- 1:38and also I don't really love this kind
- 1:41of rule in the first place. Like, it's
- 1:43very similar to Rattlings. Well, except
- 1:46for like Rattlings don't stop you from
- 1:48like you can't interrupt and shoot
- 1:51someone with Rattlings.
- 1:53>> Sure. You know? Yeah. It's kind of like
- 1:54you get some amount of guards, but it
- 1:57you can do more than just shooting, you
- 1:58know? Um I I just think this kind of
- 2:01stuff slows down the game because your
- 2:02opponent's going to be taking their turn
- 2:03and they've thought out their whole, you
- 2:04know, they've taken time to think about
- 2:06what they're going to do, and then
- 2:08you're like, "Actually, no." So, then it
- 2:09just is like more delaying stuff. I feel
- 2:12like it slows down the game. It like
- 2:14interrupts the flow. Um and I always
- 2:17just find rules like this
- 2:19kind of feels bad to play as and feels
- 2:22bad to play against. They just like I
- 2:24don't find it too fun. Yeah, same. And
- 2:26like I don't think this is indicative of
- 2:29the complexity creep that we've talked
- 2:31about, but it is definitely a part of
- 2:33the like gotcha creep in the game, you
- 2:36know? Like it feels like uh the faction
- 2:38rule for this team is very much a like
- 2:42surprise your opponent and kill their
- 2:44stuff when they're not expecting it. Or
- 2:46whatever, stop their plans before they
- 2:48happen. And that's not a bad thing. I
- 2:49also think it's like that, but also talk
- 2:53about analysis paralysis.
- 2:54>> totally. Like it took you 20 years to
- 2:56take a turn before, but now every turn
- 2:58you got to think about, well, what if
- 2:59they interrupt me with any of their guys
- 3:01that can, like half their team or
- 3:03whatever at that particular point, cuz
- 3:05it's not everybody, but um yeah. So, I
- 3:08don't love that faction rule, but the
- 3:10other faction rule I really like, it's
- 3:12very simple. It's just like elegant.
- 3:13This is what it does. You don't have to
- 3:15think about it too much. Um and all the
- 3:17operatives are fairly simple. So, I
- 3:20think if you can get past the one
- 3:21faction rule, I think this is a pretty
- 3:23simple team, actually. Um with the one
- 3:26big caveat. The models are cool. Yep. Um
- 3:30but they're just like more guard. I feel
- 3:31like this has been talked about to death
- 3:33already, but like they're fine. They're
- 3:36not like super crazy to me. If you like
- 3:38them, you like them. If you don't, you
- 3:39don't. We don't have to tell you if you
- 3:41think they're cool or not, right? You
- 3:42can see them. Yeah, I think that um in
- 3:45terms of the models, like
- 3:46uh guard isn't not
- 3:49my bag, typically. Uh these ones I like
- 3:53more than like Cadian, I think they're
- 3:55more interesting than that. I like them
- 3:57more than Death Korps. I think they're
- 3:59they've got like a cool kind of like
- 4:01indoor vibe uh that I think is neat and
- 4:05I think there's like a lot of different
- 4:07ways you could take it from a hobby
- 4:08perspective. Uh
- 4:10however, like yeah, it's they're like 10
- 4:13humans with guns and they but
- 4:16>> you know, you got to you got to feed the
- 4:18meat grinder somehow.
- 4:19>> Yeah. I would rate these as a like a mid
- 4:21excitement level Yeah. for this team.
- 4:23You agree? Yeah. All right.
- 4:25Okay, next up we're talking about the
- 4:26Tyranid part of this box, which is the
- 4:28Red Terror. Comes with a bunch of Gaunts
- 4:31and also um all like the narrative rules
- 4:33and the scenarios and the lore and all
- 4:36that stuff. Why don't you like you can
- 4:37take this a bit.
- 4:38>> Sure. So, uh the Gaunts are like
- 4:41whatever. These are models that already
- 4:42exist that
- 4:44uh you know,
- 4:45if you need them and you can get them
- 4:47this way, great. Obviously, the main
- 4:48like draw of the Tyranid half of this
- 4:50box is the Red Terror. This is a great
- 4:52model. It was a blast to paint. It was a
- 4:55bit of a pain in the ass to put
- 4:56together, but all Tyranids are, frankly,
- 4:59uh especially modern Tyranids. Uh but
- 5:01yeah, I think it's a very cool model. I
- 5:02mean, what what could you possibly say?
- 5:04It's like a giant snake bug with talons.
- 5:07Very cool, very fun to paint. Uh
- 5:10the like lore section in the book, which
- 5:13admittedly, I don't always read. I did
- 5:15this time because we were writing that
- 5:17article for it. And the model like
- 5:19really reflects that. You know, I think
- 5:21it's a cool
- 5:22uh it like it really carries through.
- 5:24It's very cool. It's a very good model.
- 5:26And it's got awesome rules. A, they're
- 5:29very thematic. It all makes sense with
- 5:31like how it acts in the lore. Uh that's
- 5:34all very cool. It's pretty complicated
- 5:37for a joint ops thing for my taste. Like
- 5:40there's two data cards.
- 5:42Uh you're constantly going to be
- 5:43managing like what profile is currently
- 5:46up right now. All of it is like pretty
- 5:48simple in and of itself. Like it's a
- 5:50it's like they're all simple rules, but
- 5:52it's like 25 simple rules to keep track
- 5:54of, you know?
- 5:56Uh so, I wish that it was maybe a little
- 6:00bit less. Like I think my ideal version
- 6:03of it would just be like a massively
- 6:05juiced up Ravener that had the same sort
- 6:08of caveat of it never being
- 6:10incapacitated fully like this one has. I
- 6:12think that's very cool. But, the way
- 6:14they get up there is like a full page of
- 6:16text and two big data cards. And that's
- 6:18like that's a bit much for me. Um
- 6:21however, I think it all like works. It
- 6:23all makes sense. The good thing is is
- 6:25this isn't intended as like a matched
- 6:27play balanced thing. And so, like
- 6:30whether or not it's strong doesn't
- 6:32matter because you're playing against
- 6:34this in like a joint ops narrative
- 6:36capacity. Doesn't matter if you win or
- 6:39lose because like the act of playing the
- 6:41game is the victory more so than the you
- 6:44know, the victory of the mission. So, I
- 6:46think it's cool. I wish it was like a
- 6:48little bit less to keep track of, but I
- 6:50think it still works. My take on this is
- 6:52I was really looking forward to all the
- 6:54boss battle stuff when they started
- 6:55teasing this like new wave of kill team
- 6:57releases. I was really looking forward
- 6:59to the Nemesis Ops book, which at first
- 7:02I thought might come as part of this
- 7:03box. It does not, and we have not seen
- 7:05it yet. So, I cannot comment on that,
- 7:08but I'm really excited to like take any
- 7:11big thing out of my 40K collection and
- 7:14just use it as a boss battle, you know?
- 7:16It says in the description of the book
- 7:18that there's rules for certain models
- 7:21and then also like a custom thing where
- 7:23you can like build your own. So, I think
- 7:25they said, you know, there's like
- 7:26Sentinels from the Guard range. There's
- 7:28some like battle suits I think from the
- 7:30Tower range, some dreadnoughts that come
- 7:32with like their whole boss battle rules
- 7:35and everything. But, then it says that
- 7:37there's a custom way to do things. I was
- 7:38really excited for all that flexibility.
- 7:41That's not in this box. Um that being
- 7:43said,
- 7:44fighting this Red Terror does seem cool
- 7:46still, um but I'm more excited for like
- 7:49the creative juices to be flowing from
- 7:51the other book. Yeah, absolutely. And if
- 7:54the Red Terror's profile and like rule
- 7:57set is indicative of what the rest of
- 7:59the big bosses are like, it's like
- 8:01I'm slightly less excited about it, to
- 8:04be honest.
- 8:04>> a bit heavy.
- 8:05>> It's a bit heavy for Joint Ops for me.
- 8:07But
- 8:08you know, if like Brad said, there's
- 8:10like good guidance on creating your own,
- 8:12then it's all optional anyway. And so I
- 8:14think that's very cool. Uh quickly,
- 8:16what's cool about the Joint Ops bit of
- 8:18this book is that there are nine
- 8:20missions that you can play through
- 8:21sequentially, and your outcome of each
- 8:24mission determines where you go in that
- 8:26path and what your like final end is. So
- 8:29I think it's cool cuz there are like
- 8:30there are some stakes in your games,
- 8:32which I think has always been something
- 8:34that's kind of lacked for me in the
- 8:36Joint Ops stuff. Like you're actually
- 8:37playing for something. There's a reason
- 8:39to try to win, or there's like, you
- 8:41know, some stakes for when you lose. And
- 8:44I think that that is very successful.
- 8:46Another bit of it that I really, really
- 8:47like is each of the missions makes use
- 8:49of the NPO activation deck. And so the
- 8:51way this works is there's a deck of 13
- 8:54cards, and at each NPO activation, you
- 8:56draw one, and then that number tells you
- 8:59like what NPO to activate, basically.
- 9:01Each mission has a different set of
- 9:03parameters.
- 9:04I think that's really cool.
- 9:06Dick on a motorcycle needs his muffler
- 9:08tuned.
- 9:10I think that's very cool. One of the
- 9:11problems with Joint Ops that I've had in
- 9:13the past is uh like analysis paralysis,
- 9:16I guess, is kind of one way to look at
- 9:18it, but just like trying to make a good
- 9:19faith decision about what the NPOs are
- 9:23doing, which NPO to activate, that sort
- 9:25of thing. You know, like how am I really
- 9:27playing this as hard as I can? And then
- 9:28you think like, well, am I walking into
- 9:30my own traps that I've set? Yeah.
- 9:31Whatever. This kind of takes another
- 9:33step of it out of your hand, adds a bit
- 9:35more randomness. Uh what's cool is that
- 9:37a lot of the missions could have the Red
- 9:39Terror activate like three or four times
- 9:40in a row depending on what you draw. So,
- 9:42it's going to be really swingy and it's
- 9:44going to be really fun. Also, it's just
- 9:46a 13-card deck, which means if you use
- 9:48Ace through King of like a normal deck
- 9:50of cards, that works. And so, that's all
- 9:53you need. You don't need to buy the box
- 9:54to use it and I think that's a very,
- 9:56very cool thing.
- 9:56>> That is cool. All right. So, who do we
- 9:59think this box is for? Is it a good
- 10:01starter set for if you're getting into
- 10:03Kill Team? I've seen a lot of people
- 10:04asking this online. Is this a good way
- 10:06to get into Kill Team if I have no Kill
- 10:09Team purchases under my belt yet? The
- 10:11answer is probably not.
- 10:13>> Yeah. Because yes, it gives you one team
- 10:15and you can play against the MPOs, which
- 10:16if that's what you're looking to get out
- 10:18of Kill Team is cool. But you don't have
- 10:20the core rules.
- 10:21And you don't have terrain. And you
- 10:24know, there's other stuff you need,
- 10:25tokens and blah blah blah. So, if you
- 10:28buy this box, can you even really play
- 10:30Kill Team? Yes. Well, kind of. Not by
- 10:33yourself. But if you buy this box, what
- 10:35you'll get out of it is one proper Kill
- 10:37Team and like the toys that go with
- 10:40them. What you won't get is everything
- 10:43else for a game of Kill Team. So, if
- 10:44you've got like a Kill Team crowd that
- 10:46you want to join, this box can help get
- 10:49you there. But so can purchasing any
- 10:51team by itself. Is this box for
- 10:53competitive players?
- 10:54Probably not unless you really, really,
- 10:56really want to play Specter Squad and
- 10:59can't wait until it becomes out as a
- 11:01solo release. Is this box for casual
- 11:04players that just want to sit around and
- 11:05have a beer and pretzels night?
- 11:07Probably. Honestly, maybe. But it
- 11:09depends what your definition of beer and
- 11:10pretzels is because if you're like, you
- 11:12know, heavy on the beer and lighter on
- 11:14the pretzels, you might just like your
- 11:16eyes might glaze over when you look at
- 11:17some of these rules even though it's
- 11:18Joint Ops. Would you agree? It's
- 11:20definitely a bit crunchy for a narrative
- 11:22box. But if what you're after is like a
- 11:24good gaming experience, but not
- 11:26necessarily just like playing uh you
- 11:28know, Monopoly with your family, this
- 11:30could be a great box for you, I think.
- 11:32Yeah, I think the whole box is like very
- 11:34thematic, too. I love like the story of
- 11:37the mission of like you're doomed, but
- 11:39just like, you know, do your best on
- 11:41your way out the door. If you're a
- 11:43tiered competitive 40K player, it seems
- 11:44like a great box. Unless you already
- 11:46have like a hundred gaunts, which
- 11:47probably you do, but maybe you don't.
- 11:49There you go. Keep an eye on the channel
- 11:50for the next couple days. We've got a
- 11:52video in which we paint all this
- 11:53nonsense. And like I said, we will be
- 11:55streaming a battle, which we are very,
- 11:57very excited about. Always fun to stream
- 11:59and hang out with the folks in chat. Uh
- 12:02thank you to Games Workshop for sending
- 12:03us this a few weeks early. Uh it's given
- 12:05us an opportunity to kind of get our
- 12:07life together and figure out what all
- 12:09this means and what all of it does. So
- 12:11>> Yeah. Thanks also to our WHP gangsters
- 12:13and mountain goats. And thanks for
- 12:15watching this video. We'll have more
- 12:16battle reports coming soon.
- 12:18Uh like Victor said, painting video
- 12:19coming soon. And check us out for that
- 12:22stream. Subscribe so you don't miss it.
- 12:23Look at me, I'm a YouTuber. We're going
- 12:25to say goodbye, right
- 12:34now.
