  3. 0:03recently a newfangled fad has hit the
  4. 0:06streets something known in the mini
  5. 0:07painting community and Slap Shop local
  6. 0:10Nottingham authorities claim that the
  7. 0:12viral video that's endangering our
  8. 0:14children has been brought on by one Rob
  9. 0:17the honest war game hey
  10. 0:24hey from The Slap Chop Union to make
  11. 0:26sure you pan your Jews as we know Mr
  12. 0:30Valley Joe of the valley Joe Corporation
  13. 0:33is threatening to withhold the zero zero
  14. 0:36one paint and so if you don't pay your
  15. 0:39dues we can't collectively bargain for
  16. 0:41better pain so they'll be talking about
  17. 0:44slap Chopper on your videos like some of
  18. 0:46these other content creators without
  19. 0:49signing up so where can I put your
  20. 0:52donation of eighty thousand dollars
  21. 0:54blackmailed
  22. 0:56I should have known let this be a lesson
  23. 0:58to all of you never trust a man with
  24. 1:01honest in his name
  25. 1:03[Music]
  26. 1:12hey everybody how's it going you know
  27. 1:15lately I've been thinking an awful lot
  28. 1:16about speed painting how it's an art in
  29. 1:20and of itself you're trying to always
  30. 1:21find that perfect balance between
  31. 1:23efficiency and quality and as the years
  32. 1:26go by in my miniature painting Journey
  33. 1:28I've realized that there probably is
  34. 1:30never going to be such thing as a
  35. 1:32perfect speed painting system instead
  36. 1:34it's about the experimentation process
  37. 1:37trying a little bit of something new
  38. 1:39maybe folding in something into your
  39. 1:41process maybe replacing one thing with
  40. 1:44another so at the end of the day your
  41. 1:46system is more fine-tuned than it was at
  42. 1:49the beginning so when I found out that
  43. 1:50my buddy Rob the honest War gamer
  44. 1:52introduced The Slap Chop system to the
  45. 1:54world of miniature painting I figured I
  46. 1:56need to try it myself and find out what
  47. 1:58the hype was all about and if you don't
  48. 2:00know who rob is he's a great content
  49. 2:02creator that Focus is mostly on age of
  50. 2:04Sigmar strategy tournament coverage and
  51. 2:07all sorts of other content I'll link his
  52. 2:10channel down below so you can check him
  53. 2:11out do you mind if I have a bit of cake
  54. 2:13uh this is my cake
  55. 2:21I'm gonna give myself 15 minutes with
  56. 2:24this method to finish one beaky Marine
  57. 2:26so let's get to slapping what makes this
  58. 2:28method seem to really work is the few
  59. 2:31amount of steps and each has a very
  60. 2:33specific Purpose By starting with the
  61. 2:35black Prime and a gray xenophile from
  62. 2:37above we set the volumes of the model so
  63. 2:39later stages we don't need to worry
  64. 2:41about our mid-tones and shadows I'm
  65. 2:44covering the black primer with the gray
  66. 2:45but the darkest areas will still be
  67. 2:47fully black and we get to keep all the
  68. 2:50crevices dark as well meaning all the
  69. 2:52details of the model will be easy to
  70. 2:54make out by the time we're finished so
  71. 2:56far none of this stuff is groundbreaking
  72. 2:58we've all seen black Prime and xenophil
  73. 3:00before and usually I like to use white
  74. 3:02from above for the xenophil but from
  75. 3:04what I understand by using a light gray
  76. 3:07we're actually setting the tone for all
  77. 3:09of our mid sections while giving us a
  78. 3:11little bit higher of a ceiling for
  79. 3:13coming back in with white in the next
  80. 3:15step so far this does seem efficient
  81. 3:18especially if you're trying to paint an
  82. 3:19entire Army fast the third step is the
  83. 3:23Special Sauce in Slap Chop you simply
  84. 3:25bust out your sexiest dry brushes and go
  85. 3:28to town over the entire model in white
  86. 3:31we're going to push all of the edges and
  87. 3:33the brightest points near The Head and
  88. 3:35Shoulders of the model so we can really
  89. 3:37make those pop later on again I applaud
  90. 3:40the efficiency here Edge highlighting is
  91. 3:43both the most eye-catching and the most
  92. 3:45time intensive parts of typical
  93. 3:48miniature painting but by cracking them
  94. 3:50out right now and going over them later
  95. 3:52with paint we're still showing that
  96. 3:54vibrancy over all the edges while saving
  97. 3:56ourselves a buttload of time since I was
  98. 3:59feeling way ahead of schedule on this
  99. 4:01model I did take a small brush out and I
  100. 4:03popped a few of the key details in that
  101. 4:06white to make sure that they really were
  102. 4:08fully opaque for the next step now the
  103. 4:10first three steps of this process were
  104. 4:12all to set the stage for our fourth and
  105. 4:15final step and that is where Slap Chop
  106. 4:17gets its name because we are going to
  107. 4:20slap lap on contrast paint over this
  108. 4:22entire model the shadows mid-tones and
  109. 4:25highlights are all done with this step
  110. 4:26as contrast is want to do however we've
  111. 4:29laid the foundation to amplify that
  112. 4:32effect even more and there really isn't
  113. 4:34a whole lot to say here just paint a
  114. 4:36thing move on to the next thing paint
  115. 4:38that thing the trickiest part of this
  116. 4:40whole Slap Chop process is making sure
  117. 4:42you don't get your color on other
  118. 4:45surfaces because if that green hits
  119. 4:47something that isn't supposed to be
  120. 4:49green you're going to have to live with
  121. 4:50it or you're going to have to go back
  122. 4:52through and paint that white over the
  123. 4:55top again and then repaint your color
  124. 4:57now because Slap Shop uses very little
  125. 5:00to no airbrush work it does mean that
  126. 5:02you are spending a fair bit of time
  127. 5:03picking out every single detail by hand
  128. 5:06if I was painting a model that had a lot
  129. 5:09of different colors and details it would
  130. 5:11certainly be efficient and great but
  131. 5:13something that's largely one color like
  132. 5:15this Marine here it may be faster just
  133. 5:18to airbrush the thing this green just
  134. 5:20start with but I do have to admit that
  135. 5:22vibrant bright colors really do pop in
  136. 5:25this style because we're not muddying
  137. 5:27them down by putting on washes to add
  138. 5:29Shadows or layers it's just pure Games
  139. 5:33Workshop stereotypical box art style
  140. 5:36bright vibrant color schemes and if you
  141. 5:38like that style this laptop technique is
  142. 5:42pretty darn good at it so we've
  143. 5:44officially accomplished our goal of
  144. 5:45painting this heresy Marine in 15
  145. 5:48minutes or less but you didn't think we
  146. 5:50were just gonna stop there did you now
  147. 5:52that I've popped my Slap Chop Cherry
  148. 5:54it's time for me to take what I've
  149. 5:56learned here integrate some things that
  150. 5:58I really like to do in my own version of
  151. 6:00speed painting and see if we can come up
  152. 6:01with a new and improved Slap Chop 2.0
  153. 6:05that's right Rob
  154. 6:06I'm the captain now I got myself one of
  155. 6:09them new leagues of Voltron dwarves and
  156. 6:11instead of priming him black I'm gonna
  157. 6:13come in with a dark cherry-ish color I'm
  158. 6:16priming with this warm color because his
  159. 6:19armor is going to be orange in a warm
  160. 6:21undertone should really kick it up a
  161. 6:23notch next instead of hitting the model
  162. 6:25from above with the neutral gray tone
  163. 6:27I'm going with a light warm tone in this
  164. 6:30yellowish beige again this is just to
  165. 6:33reinforce the warmth of our shadow color
  166. 6:35below each transparent contrast layer we
  167. 6:38apply later over these will still show a
  168. 6:41bit of that warmth underneath and then
  169. 6:43we finish up our undercoats with that
  170. 6:45same white dry brush As Seen On TV with
  171. 6:48the OG Slap Chop I'm trying a heavy body
  172. 6:51acrylic white here for the dry brush
  173. 6:53just because I kind of was curious and
  174. 6:55it is never a bad time to experiment in
  175. 6:58the end this fancy artist heavy body
  176. 7:00white really made no difference at all
  177. 7:03so you go about your business with
  178. 7:04whatever white you already have but now
  179. 7:07we know and knowing is half the battle
  180. 7:09other half's lasers we are ready to
  181. 7:12start adding color to our Wii space
  182. 7:14Adventurer here and up to this point I'm
  183. 7:16on track to finish the model in the same
  184. 7:18amount of time as our last but here's
  185. 7:20where we're going to have some amount of
  186. 7:21variation in our time to completion and
  187. 7:23it really doesn't come from any of my
  188. 7:25changes in the approach I'm taking to
  189. 7:27painting the model but instead just how
  190. 7:30much detail and gobbledygook crap in
  191. 7:32different colors we have to use on this
  192. 7:34model the good news is I've found that
  193. 7:36models that have different variations
  194. 7:38and textures a bunch of different kinds
  195. 7:40of details and all sorts of different
  196. 7:42cracks and crevices really benefit from
  197. 7:44using contrast paint with a brush the
  198. 7:46flip side of that coin is if you're
  199. 7:48painting a big model with a lot of flat
  200. 7:50or large round surfaces painting with
  201. 7:53contrast can be in utter pain all I'm
  202. 7:55saying is there's a reason why you don't
  203. 7:56see people telling you to paint your
  204. 7:58rhinos and land Raiders with contrast
  205. 8:00paint and a paintbrush
  206. 8:01[Music]
  207. 8:03foreign
  208. 8:04[Music]
  209. 8:11contrast all over the surfaces I'm
  210. 8:13feeling the slight but noticeable
  211. 8:15difference in this paint job versus the
  212. 8:17heresy Marine having that color interest
  213. 8:19in the darker areas and keeping a warmth
  214. 8:21in the xenopho Highlight leads to a less
  215. 8:24drab look in the shadows and a more
  216. 8:26vibrant clean look in all of the
  217. 8:28brighter contrast paints that we're
  218. 8:30using
  219. 8:33[Music]
  220. 8:34music hello
  221. 8:38hello
  222. 8:40[Music]
  223. 8:47by the time I'm finished painting the
  224. 8:49base on this model we're at just over 16
  225. 8:52minutes to completion and this is fairly
  226. 8:54respectable but our Slap Chop 2.0 paint
  227. 8:57job isn't done just yet oh no I've got
  228. 9:00one more trick up my sleeve and it'll
  229. 9:02leave Rob in the dust all you got to do
  230. 9:04is grab yourself a handful of light
  231. 9:06pastel paints and we're gonna get to
  232. 9:09work it's Easter basket time
  233. 9:11we're dying eggs we are going to do some
  234. 9:14Edge highlighting now I know what you're
  235. 9:16thinking this is a speed paint job ain't
  236. 9:18nobody got time for Edge highlighting
  237. 9:20but hear me out I'm going to show you
  238. 9:22why 10 minutes of edge highlighting
  239. 9:24makes a world of difference if you do it
  240. 9:27the proper speed painting way we are
  241. 9:29just going to do one pass of edge
  242. 9:32highlights starting with the most
  243. 9:33important parts of the model first for
  244. 9:36this guy it's his face in his orange
  245. 9:38armor we're using bright off-white tones
  246. 9:41so it makes an immediate impact without
  247. 9:43deviating too far from the base colors
  248. 9:46tone we're starting with the most
  249. 9:47important bits because when you feel
  250. 9:49you're ready to be done Edge
  251. 9:50highlighting this model just say you're
  252. 9:53done if you've done the face and the
  253. 9:54armor he's gonna look awesome if I was
  254. 9:57doing 50 of these little buggers I'd
  255. 9:59only highlight the face and armor these
  256. 10:02are the two areas that make the biggest
  257. 10:03impact and they can be done in under
  258. 10:05three minutes per model with a little
  259. 10:07practice
  260. 10:10I understand the Mantra around Slap Chop
  261. 10:13is it's about getting all your army
  262. 10:15painted quick so you can get to that
  263. 10:17tournament and have your models painted
  264. 10:18by the weekend or you can go to your DND
  265. 10:21game this weekend and you can have all
  266. 10:23the monsters ready for your party to
  267. 10:25fight but there's two major reasons why
  268. 10:27I think you should not ignore this step
  269. 10:29first off the model is actually fully
  270. 10:32painted before this step so you can go
  271. 10:35play a game with them tomorrow you don't
  272. 10:37need to do this step right away even
  273. 10:39though it really won't take much time
  274. 10:41you can do it at any point next I know
  275. 10:45you want to get your stuff done fast but
  276. 10:48if you do this step the amount of brush
  277. 10:51control you will learn and how much you
  278. 10:53will improve as a miniature painter will
  279. 10:55be astounding by doing this over an
  280. 10:57entire Army so not only can you get all
  281. 11:00your stuff done fast you can actually
  282. 11:02improve your skills as you go I'd be
  283. 11:05remiss not to share some kind of a tip
  284. 11:07in any of my videos they wouldn't take
  285. 11:09you a little close closer up the rungs
  286. 11:11of the ladder of becoming a better
  287. 11:13miniature painter and as you do this
  288. 11:15Edge highlighting you're going to get
  289. 11:16faster and faster at it while your
  290. 11:19quality improves you will know what
  291. 11:21angle to hold the model at without even
  292. 11:22thinking about it and you won't have to
  293. 11:24stress about having half painted models
  294. 11:26and rushing through this step because
  295. 11:28they're already going to be table ready
  296. 11:30before you knock out the highlighting so
  297. 11:33Slap Shop 2.0 isn't a complete redesign
  298. 11:36it's still close enough to the original
  299. 11:37that I do have to pay my union dues in
  300. 11:40order to process this video but I think
  301. 11:43it's enough of an improvement I'm happy
  302. 11:45to share with you all oh and if you want
  303. 11:47there's even more quick steps you can
  304. 11:49tack on to the end of this approach I
  305. 11:51hadn't used my full 10 minutes in my
  306. 11:53Edge highlighting so I grabbed a yellow
  307. 11:55shade and hit all of the orange armor
  308. 11:57really fast to pump up that vibrancy
  309. 11:59even more so here we are a 15 minute
  310. 12:02Slap Chop 1.0 heresy Marine versus a 26
  311. 12:07minute Slap Chop 2.0 leagues of Ultron
  312. 12:10I'm not saying my method is better maybe
  313. 12:13time is your only concern and you need
  314. 12:15to just get stuff done and have it look
  315. 12:17pretty darn good in the process the
  316. 12:19point of my experiment today was just
  317. 12:21that to experiment we don't need to
  318. 12:24create imaginary rules for ourselves in
  319. 12:26miniature painting be Fearless try out
  320. 12:29new techniques evolve your approach over
  321. 12:31time and the quality of your painted
  322. 12:33armies will grow with you Slap Chop 2.0
  323. 12:36it's not the slap you want but it is the
  324. 12:39slap you need thanks for getting slap
  325. 12:41happy with me today and a big thank you
