  1. 0:00there's a forever struggle between chaos
  2. 0:01and order in our universe and it's
  3. 0:03happening all around us
  4. 0:05each battling for control and wielding
  5. 0:07it for what could only be described as
  6. 0:09the briefest of moments before the other
  7. 0:11gains the upper hand
  8. 0:14take something as simple as our solar
  9. 0:16system for example after extensive
  10. 0:19research to scientists at MIT we sadly
  11. 0:22announced that the entire solar system
  12. 0:23as we know it is inherently
  13. 0:25unpredictable
  14. 0:27basically without an infinitely precise
  15. 0:30knowledge of the location and velocity
  16. 0:32of the planets at any given moment our
  17. 0:34Newtonian calculations will be
  18. 0:36completely wrong after I mayor four
  19. 0:37million years
  20. 0:39even organic life as we know it exhibits
  21. 0:42long periods of stasis and mass
  22. 0:44extinctions between bursts of evolution
  23. 0:46and growth if there was no asteroid
  24. 0:49impacts that wiped out the dinosaurs all
  25. 0:51those thousands of years ago humanity
  26. 0:53would have most likely followed a
  27. 0:54different evolutionary path now before
  28. 0:58we continue I'd like you all to know I

  32. 1:05interesting content
  33. 1:08so you're probably asking yourself what
  34. 1:10does any of this have to do with a
  35. 1:12possibly dystopian or utopian future for
  36. 1:14a human race
  37. 1:15it's simple really chaos and order are
  38. 1:18the source of the ideas which dystopias
  39. 1:20and utopias represent
  40. 1:23a utopia is what most would regard as a
  41. 1:25paradise a place where the right balance
  42. 1:27of the social governmental and religious
  43. 1:30systems exist and I maintained also
  44. 1:33known as representation of absolute
  45. 1:34order from a societal context while a
  46. 1:37dystopia is basically the opposite where
  47. 1:39everything is imbalanced violence unruly
  48. 1:42and finally chaotic so will the world
  49. 1:46end up leaning towards a dystopian path
  50. 1:48or some kind of nirvana this is more a
  51. 1:51philosophical question than a scientific
  52. 1:53one
  53. 1:55if you were to go outside today and
  54. 1:57asked 100 different people if they
  55. 1:59imagine the world becoming a dystopia or
  56. 2:01utopia in the future you're likely to
  57. 2:03get a fair amount of support on both
  58. 2:05sides
  59. 2:06this is because besides the fact no one
  60. 2:09can actually predict the future
  61. 2:10we often project our own subconscious
  62. 2:12bias whenever we interact with the world
  63. 2:14around us
  64. 2:15so I guess we are stuck with philosophy
  65. 2:17then
  66. 2:19since the dawn of time people have
  67. 2:21imagined a perfect world and their
  68. 2:23desire for something better
  69. 2:24promoted progress this drive advanced
  70. 2:27unevolved society under the point we
  71. 2:29find ourselves today yet despite our
  72. 2:32advancements the world is still filled
  73. 2:34with violence hate poverty and general
  74. 2:37discontent the technologies we have
  75. 2:39developed have been either twisted or
  76. 2:41purpose-built to cause pain or violence
  77. 2:44the Manhattan Project for example saw a
  78. 2:47state sanctioned Assembly of some of the
  79. 2:49greatest minds science could offer at
  80. 2:51least in Western Hemisphere and what was
  81. 2:53its purpose to build a bomb uh not long
  82. 2:57after its creation that bomb was used in
  83. 2:59Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  84. 3:01when Japan refused to surrender during
  85. 3:03World War two
  86. 3:04in his declaration to the Japanese
  87. 3:07people upon the topic of surrender
  88. 3:09Emperor Hirohito stated and I quote the
  89. 3:12enemy now possesses a new and terrible
  90. 3:14weapon with the part to destroy many
  91. 3:16innocent lives and do incalculable
  92. 3:18damage should we continue to fight not
  93. 3:22only we do result in an ultimate
  94. 3:23collapse and obliteration of the
  95. 3:24Japanese nation but also it will lead to
  96. 3:27the total extinction of human
  97. 3:28civilization today Japan is one of the
  98. 3:32leading nations as regards advances in
  99. 3:34technology owing to the high quality of
  100. 3:37living they have the highest life
  101. 3:38expectancy in the world also having less
  102. 3:42than two gun related deaths per year
  103. 3:43they are one of the safest and least
  104. 3:45violent countries globally
  105. 3:48although not absolute I consider this to
  106. 3:50be a picture of a utopia and it was born
  107. 3:53from a single choice Japan as we know it
  108. 3:56today may have been wiped off the face
  109. 3:57of the earth if they chose to continue
  110. 3:59the path of war all those years ago
  111. 4:02what this tells us is our future or the
  112. 4:04future of human society to a large
  113. 4:06extent is dependent on the decisions we
  114. 4:08make today but it's not as simple as
  115. 4:11making the right decisions at every turn
  116. 4:12chaos will not have it so
  117. 4:15sometimes the decisions we take might
  118. 4:18even be made with the best of intentions
  119. 4:20and yet would still lead to the worst of
  120. 4:22results
  121. 4:23when I von Braun had a passion for
  122. 4:25astronomy and dreamed of building
  123. 4:27Rockets for space travel but his ideas
  124. 4:29were used to develop the v2 rocket and
  125. 4:31later intercontinental ballistic
  126. 4:33missiles for the US the Internet
  127. 4:37initially intended to bring the world
  128. 4:39together is a leading cause of
  129. 4:40depression and social isolation for many
  130. 4:42people today
  131. 4:44in the near future machines will likely
  132. 4:47take jobs from low to middle skilled
  133. 4:49individuals leaving them feeling like
  134. 4:50societal outcasts even though the
  135. 4:53initial idea was to give them more time
  136. 4:55to live their best lives
  137. 4:57bottom line is even if an idea
  138. 4:59technology or action is cut out for good
  139. 5:02initially there is always a chance that
  140. 5:04it will end up causing the wrong results
  141. 5:05after all even the universe exists in a
  142. 5:08constant state of struggle between chaos
  143. 5:10and order
  144. 5:12yeah that kind of sounds hopeless
  145. 5:14knowing that society is inevitably
  146. 5:17headed for chaos one way or the other
  147. 5:18but I don't think it necessarily is
  148. 5:22just like how the Sun on feelingly
  149. 5:24lights up our day after a long night we
  150. 5:26can choose to consciously make the right
  151. 5:28decisions
  152. 5:29keeping the chaos at bay
  153. 5:32greed violence envy and the other four
  154. 5:35deadly sins are all things we can
  155. 5:36actively control by consciously doing
  156. 5:38good and course-correct in whenever we
  157. 5:40go astray I believe by doing so we will
  158. 5:44be well on our way towards creating a
  159. 5:46utopia which a species of our capacity
  160. 5:48deserves
  161. 5:48[Music]
