  2. 0:14well if men are upset with their
  3. 0:17disposability role that's because of
  4. 0:20patriarchy MH um do you have comments to
  5. 0:24that is it really because of patriarchy
  6. 0:26that we go to war and that boys are
  7. 0:28doing sports that they're damaging their
  8. 0:30development of their brain and uh
  9. 0:32construction work and you know dangerous
  10. 0:34jobs um is it because of patriarchy and
  11. 0:37because of men that men are disposable
  12. 0:39let's start with the call well I think
  13. 0:42the first thing to do is to get an
  14. 0:44understanding of what patriarchy is
  15. 0:46which is essentially a system where
  16. 0:49property and title were handed down from
  17. 0:51father to son from generation to
  18. 0:54Generation Um in the literal sense that
  19. 0:57is patriarchy and in the more fig itive
  20. 1:00sense in the ideological sense
  21. 1:02patriarchy is a
  22. 1:04system that oppresses women uh and uh
  23. 1:09and that operates for men's benefit at
  24. 1:12the expense of women um the patriarchy
  25. 1:15were title and deed were handed down
  26. 1:17from father to son that existed the
  27. 1:20patriarchy where women were oppressed
  28. 1:23for the for the sake and benefit of
  29. 1:25oppressive males in a cultural wide
  30. 1:28phenomena that never happened um there
  31. 1:32is I think a knee-jerk from most gender
  32. 1:35ideologues
  33. 1:36to respond to every concern that happens
  34. 1:40to men as as though it's all patriarchy
  35. 1:44which is this almost
  36. 1:46unidentifiable mass of something out
  37. 1:49there that we can maybe fix one of these
  38. 1:51days if you'll just help us tear it down
  39. 1:53and and rebuild Society I don't buy that
  40. 1:57at all um there are certainly problems
  41. 2:01that men experience that evolved from
  42. 2:06our our survival needs as a species it
  43. 2:09required men to be I think throughout
  44. 2:12most of history at more risk than women
  45. 2:15who carry children uh that certainly I
  46. 2:19don't have any argu argument with
  47. 2:23but did those survival needs
  48. 2:27necessitate uh campaigns that identify
  49. 2:29all men as potential rapists is that a
  50. 2:32problem that stems from
  51. 2:35patriarchy I'm not buying that I I
  52. 2:38personally find that idea kind of
  53. 2:39offensive that uh uh you can take the
  54. 2:43the multitude of issues from we have
  55. 2:46problems right now with with drugging
  56. 2:48Boys in order to manage their behavior
  57. 2:51with drugs like rlin we have pictures uh
  58. 2:53are problems that extend into the the
  59. 2:56realm of suicide like Warren was just
  60. 2:58talking about we have problem problems
  61. 3:00with discrimination in Family Court we
  62. 3:02have problems with one after another
  63. 3:05after another I mean we can just repeat
  64. 3:07these and repeat these uh into infinity
  65. 3:10and to say that that all these problems
  66. 3:13are rooted in a largely mythical
  67. 3:16concept um to me just flies in the face
  68. 3:19of reality and I'm sure Warren may
  69. 3:22have many other things to say about this
  70. 3:26but I would say that if you
  71. 3:28want to
  72. 3:30understand the problem of male suicide
  73. 3:33start looking at why men are killing
  74. 3:34themselves skip all the gender politics
  75. 3:37skip uh all the the
  76. 3:39ideology and start looking at individual
  77. 3:42cases and doing research and data which
  78. 3:45is really important we need fields of
  79. 3:47study about males that is free of
  80. 3:51ideological control so we can start
  81. 3:53understanding these problems how they
  82. 3:55happen we're not going to get there by
  83. 3:57wrapping everything up in the blanket of
  84. 3:59patriarchy and saying there you go
  85. 4:02because then how do we how do we know
  86. 4:04patriarchy's been killed Hannah Rosen
  87. 4:06just wrote an article I think that
  88. 4:08patriarchy is now dead so okay all these
  89. 4:10problems should go away um I'm not
  90. 4:14buying that but with that I'll I'll pass
  91. 4:16to Warren good good
  92. 4:19response basically the world was not
  93. 4:22controlled by patriarchy the world was
  94. 4:24controlled by the need to
  95. 4:26survive and that need to survive has
  96. 4:30been common to all human beings
  97. 4:32throughout all of history and the
  98. 4:34countries and the places that where
  99. 4:36survival occurred people figured out
  100. 4:39some type of usual division of labor
  101. 4:41usually in the more modern days women
  102. 4:44raise children men raise money in the
  103. 4:46old days you know women um cook the
  104. 4:49meals and you know risk their lives at
  105. 4:51childbirth uh women risk men miss their
  106. 4:54lives in in war um to protect the
  107. 4:56children that women bore and so um and
  108. 5:00both sexes did not have neither sex had
  109. 5:03rights both sexes had obligations and
  110. 5:07responsibilities when when my my father
  111. 5:10used to hear me at the beginning of the
  112. 5:12women's movement talk about women's
  113. 5:14rights and then men's rights and then
  114. 5:16gay rights and then civil rights you go
  115. 5:18my goodness when are you ever going to
  116. 5:20learn about responsibilities you know
  117. 5:22what about obligations you know those
  118. 5:24what what about duties what about honor
  119. 5:26those are the things that you need to
  120. 5:28learn about as a as a male before you're
  121. 5:31you go from boy to man and so the and so
  122. 5:35when you look at it through the lens of
  123. 5:37survival you realize that neither gender
  124. 5:40had rights both genders had
  125. 5:43responsibilities both genders had
  126. 5:45obligations both set genders risk their
  127. 5:48lives in different ways both set genders
  128. 5:50sacrifice their lives for their children
  129. 5:53why did they do that probably partially
  130. 5:56biologically that's the only way you got
  131. 5:58another generation but also in when you
  132. 6:01talk to men and women qualitatively they
  133. 6:04both say exactly the same thing I'm
  134. 6:07making these sacrifices in the hope with
  135. 6:10the dream that my children will have a
  136. 6:13better life than I had that's the
  137. 6:15inspiration that's the motivation that's
  138. 6:18come to both sexes and when gender
  139. 6:21studies only looks at one part of the of
  140. 6:24the scale then here's what happens the
  141. 6:27women's movement has done wonderful
  142. 6:30thing and that is expanded options for
  143. 6:32women but let's look at that as if the
  144. 6:34world were a family boat for a and men
  145. 6:37and women were both in the same family
  146. 6:38boat in this family boat in the old days
  147. 6:42men rode from the right side raise money
  148. 6:45uh women learned you Row from the left
  149. 6:46side of the boat raise children the
  150. 6:49women's movement after divorce has
  151. 6:50occurred said wait a minute we want
  152. 6:52women to have the options and the
  153. 6:54ability to row from both sides of the
  154. 6:56boat raise children and raise money this
  155. 6:58was my opinion something to be applauded
  156. 7:01um but nobody said to men you need to be
  157. 7:05honored as much for raising children as
  158. 7:07for raising money we need to not only
  159. 7:10train you and socialize you to raise
  160. 7:12children effectively we need to honor
  161. 7:14you and respect you and we need to
  162. 7:16encourage our daughters to fall in love
  163. 7:18with you if you're raising children as
  164. 7:20well as raising money then we would have
  165. 7:23both sexes able to row from both sides
  166. 7:25of the boat now right now what we have
  167. 7:28is women able to row from both sides of
  168. 7:30the boat but if a man becomes unemployed
  169. 7:32he can't row from both sides of the boat
  170. 7:35so we have um so the boat gets roded on
  171. 7:38just one side and a boat that gets roded
  172. 7:41on just one side is a boat that goes in
  173. 7:43circles a boat that goes in circles is
  174. 7:46far more vulnerable to the rocks of re
  175. 7:48of recessions and um and and and it
  176. 7:51sinks so when either sex wins both sexes
  177. 7:56lose gender studies as of today is only
  178. 8:00about one sex as if that one sex were a
  179. 8:04victim for universities not to have
  180. 8:08every possible way of looking at gender
  181. 8:11the ma the male way the female way the
  182. 8:14conservative male way the conservative
  183. 8:16female way the liberal male way the
  184. 8:18liberal female way all of that has to be
  185. 8:20part of the gender mix gay male way gay
  186. 8:23female ways U transgender ways we have
  187. 8:27to open up and look at and not condemn
  188. 8:30before we even speak the the women's
  189. 8:34movement's gender studies programs has
  190. 8:37looked at w the the world through the
  191. 8:40spectrum of women's experience of
  192. 8:43powerlessness and women's experience of
  193. 8:46what they think is male
  194. 8:49power they haven't looked at the world
  195. 8:52from Men's experience of
  196. 8:55powerlessness and men's experience of
  197. 8:58what the power of women's beauty or
  198. 9:01youth is or sexuality is or sexual
  199. 9:04withdrawal is or emotional um ability to
  200. 9:08support them or not support them is and
  201. 9:10that's the male experience of female
  202. 9:13power but that's not the female
  203. 9:16experience of female power or
  204. 9:18powerlessness so you have to look at the
  205. 9:20world from
  206. 9:22multiple multiple um areas of of of
  207. 9:25examination you have to see the male
  208. 9:27experience of male powerlessness
  209. 9:29the male experience of female
  210. 9:31powerlessness and power the female
  211. 9:34experience of power and powerlessness
  212. 9:36and the female experience of male power
  213. 9:38and powerlessness and and then you add
  214. 9:41things like class and other things to
  215. 9:44that then you have a discussion that
  216. 9:46helps everybody in the University
  217. 9:49understand her or himself and feel heard
  218. 9:52but to have a discussion that is just
  219. 9:55from one perspective and call that a
  220. 10:00University that insults the very concept
  221. 10:04of what freedom of speech intellectual
  222. 10:07curiosity um I Pro some people say I
  223. 10:11know more about men than anybody in the
  224. 10:13world but I cannot get a job at any
  225. 10:17major university in the United States in
  226. 10:19the gender studies area the area I know
  227. 10:21the most about because I am not
  228. 10:24politically
  229. 10:26correct and that's very sad and so
  230. 10:30patriarchy is
  231. 10:35um is not the
  232. 10:38filter through which is it's not the
  233. 10:41only defining filter of men and women if
  234. 10:44men made the rules to benefit men at the
  235. 10:46expense of women here are some of the
  236. 10:48way the world here's some of the way the
  237. 10:50world would look like we would make
  238. 10:52rules that every woman would be sexual
  239. 10:54with us whatever we would like um and
  240. 10:58that the women who are very young maybe
  241. 11:0013 or 14 would be very interested in us
  242. 11:04that we would be um that when we were um
  243. 11:07that we would die we we have a longer
  244. 11:10life expectancy than women that the
  245. 11:12world would be set up in such a way that
  246. 11:14we would not be the sex to commit
  247. 11:15suicide uh we would be the sex to least
  248. 11:18be likely to commit suicide the world
  249. 11:20would be set up in such a way that we
  250. 11:22would um have women pay for us on dates
  251. 11:25uh because they valued us more than we
  252. 11:27valued them um and so that we we would
  253. 11:30have uh women take the sexual
  254. 11:32initiatives and um and risk rejection
  255. 11:34and we would sit back and say yes or no
  256. 11:37um depending on whether we wanted to or
  257. 11:38not uh we would uh if if a woman went
  258. 11:42too far too quickly we could yell date
  259. 11:44rape um but she couldn't and and she
  260. 11:46would be um uh she would have to wait
  261. 11:49until there was she was proved herself
  262. 11:51innocent um rather than the other way
  263. 11:53around uh we would have men's Studies
  264. 11:56classes and not women's Studies classes
  265. 11:58we would have women have to be the
  266. 12:00primary bread winner and earn more money
  267. 12:02because the road to high pay is a toll
  268. 12:04road it costs and it and it's takes a
  269. 12:06lot out of somebody to work very hard we
  270. 12:08would have the we would have three
  271. 12:10options when the children are born the
  272. 12:12option to raise the children the option
  273. 12:13to be involved in the in the workplace
  274. 12:15or the option to do some combination of
  275. 12:17both uh women would have just one option
  276. 12:19the option to raise money raise money or
  277. 12:21raise money and then we would feel free
  278. 12:22to blame them if they raise more money
  279. 12:24and feel free to reject them if they
  280. 12:26didn't raise enough money that's the way
  281. 12:28a patriarchy would look like like uh and
  282. 12:30that's just the tip of the iceberg of
  283. 12:32what it would look like um we would have
  284. 12:34female only draft registration um and
  285. 12:36not male only draft registration men
  286. 12:38would have the option to join the armed
  287. 12:40services but not the obligation to join
  288. 12:42the armed services the option to go to
  289. 12:43combat but not the expectation to go to
  290. 12:45combat um we would you that's the way a
  291. 12:48world would look like if it was a
  292. 12:50patriarchy
