7. 0:10entertainment. A lot of people argue
8. 0:11that Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss
9. 0:13fetishize gay people. A lot of people
10. 0:14argue this because the show is leaning
11. 0:15heavily into the hypersexualization of
12. 0:16these characters and depicting them with
13. 0:18crude humor rather than any nuance
14. 0:19regarding their sexuality. A lot of
15. 0:21people point out the fact that major
16. 0:22male on male characters and
17. 0:23relationships in the show often feature
18. 0:24themes of sexual assault, human
19. 0:25trafficking, and problematic power
20. 0:27imbalances, which mirrors a common
21. 0:28criticism with the way that a lot of
22. 0:29queer men are depicted in media,
23. 0:31especially if they're depicted in an
24. 0:32over-dramatic lens. Opposed to that,
25. 0:33many people also point out the fact that
26. 0:35the creator herself is LGBTQ. As well as
27. 0:36that, the hyperbolic sex trends [music]
28. 0:38and cynical tone of the show often line
29. 0:39up intentionally because the show takes
30. 0:41place in hell. A show that takes place
31. 0:42in a location like that is going to have
32. 0:43a level of vice, trauma, as well as
33. 0:45hypersexuality. It's going to be baked
34. 0:46into the writing of the characters no
35. 0:47matter their orientation. But, with that
36. 0:49being said, I feel like an important
37. 0:50takeaway to acknowledge is the fact that
38. 0:51just because you're a part of a specific
39. 0:52group doesn't mean you're immune from
40. 0:53criticism in regards to how you depict
41. 0:55that group. Nevertheless, a lot of
42. 0:56people are apprehensive about the
43. 0:57possibility of homosexuality being
44. 0:59fetishized, primarily because it comes
45. 1:00across like they're treating gay
46. 1:01characters as objects of fantasy or
47. 1:02amusement rather than fully nuanced
48. 1:04individuals, the likes of which can
49. 1:05theoretically perpetuate harmful
50. 1:06narratives and seemingly come across
51. 1:08counterproductive considering the entire
52. 1:09show's themes are very pro-LGBTQ.
