  2. 0:14there was the case the Serpico case you
  3. 0:19might be too young to the movie Serpico
  4. 0:21Adele you know there's about a New York
  5. 0:23City undercover cop and he exposes
  6. 0:25police corruption and gets shot at the
  7. 0:30end of the movie it's a really good
  8. 0:32movie with help it you know if he gets
  9. 0:33shot at the end of the movie and retires
  10. 0:35from the police force and he was a real
  11. 0:37man Frank Serpico a woman after the
  12. 0:40movie after this was made decided she
  13. 0:43wanted to become a single mother and
  14. 0:44tricked him into fathering a child and
  15. 0:46the court accepted that because she told
  16. 0:49her friends she was going to trick them
  17. 0:51and they testified and the court said
  18. 0:52yes you were tricked into it and still
  19. 0:55awarded her over 90 percent of his
  20. 0:58police pension so everything that he
  21. 0:59goes through in this movie took two you
  22. 1:02know including getting shot to earn his
  23. 1:04pension she won by sleeping with him one
  24. 1:06night and when this became a legal issue
  25. 1:10I remember one fan I think she was the
  26. 1:14president of the New York Chapter of now
  27. 1:16this this case was in New York so they
  28. 1:18went to her for a quote and she said if
  29. 1:22he didn't want to be a parent he
  30. 1:25shouldn't have sex which is exactly the
  31. 1:28pro-life argument you know if you say
  32. 1:30that so what do we need a portion for if
  33. 1:32you don't want to be parent don't have
  34. 1:33sets well that option is not that's not
  35. 1:35a good alternative for women but for men
  36. 1:38that's perfectly okay and all the
  37. 1:39arguments against men having the same
  38. 1:41kind of choices are just rewording zuv
  39. 1:44the pro-life movement and all the
  40. 1:46arguments against joint custody are just
  41. 1:48rewarding zuv the arguments that we use
  42. 1:51to keep women from careers so what do
  43. 1:54you think the solution is for male
  44. 1:57reproductive rights I've you know you
  45. 2:01have to again we there's then we have to
  46. 2:04have this discussion what's best for
  47. 2:06people and personally I am pro-choice
  48. 2:09you know personally I feel that
  49. 2:12the whole argument for a paternity suit
  50. 2:15is that hey you got a pregnant it's not
  51. 2:18fair to leave you her stuck with the
  52. 2:20problem and that argument has been
  53. 2:22updated ever since Rafi way because you
  54. 2:25didn't leave her stuck with the argument
  55. 2:27you left her with a choice a decision
  56. 2:28and if she makes the decision you know I
  57. 2:32don't care what your views are on this I
  58. 2:34want to have a child as she has that
  59. 2:36power to say I want to be a parent then
  60. 2:39she needs to take the responsibility of
  61. 2:41taking care of it she can't stick
  62. 2:42somebody else she can't you know we
  63. 2:44can't have that we can't say it's it's
  64. 2:46too much of a burden for a woman to have
  65. 2:48nine months of parental care into and
  66. 2:50then give the child up for adoption she
  67. 2:52should be able to get out of it even
  68. 2:54before nine months but a man should be
  69. 2:56stuck for eighteen years and have an you
  70. 2:58know note no control over it he should
  71. 3:00be able to and and this is you know
  72. 3:02privately a lot of feminists agree with
  73. 3:04with this logic but publicly they're
  74. 3:06just getting too much traction with it
  75. 3:08but there are some feminists who did
  76. 3:11Karen de Crowe who was a national
  77. 3:14president of the National Organization
  78. 3:15for Women became Serpico's attorney so
  79. 3:19they're you know there are people who
  80. 3:21recognize that there are there are
  81. 3:24people who feel the egalitarianism is a
  82. 3:27principle and feminism is a principle
  83. 3:29but most of the feminist leaders do not
  84. 3:32really subscribe to the principle they
  85. 3:35use the principle as part of an argument
  86. 3:36but they'll rationalize their way out of
  87. 3:38it you know at a moment's notice and
  88. 3:41when I look at the political landscape I
  89. 3:43really think the most sexist entity in
  90. 3:48the political spectrum or feminist
  91. 3:50leaders they're the most blatantly
  92. 3:52sexist of any of the leaders you know
  93. 3:55they're the ones who are saying we
  94. 3:58should allocate health care according
  95. 4:00you know the health care dollars
  96. 4:01according to gender as long as women get
  97. 4:03more of it we should have health
  98. 4:08agencies you know just for women but not
  99. 4:11for men we should vote you should
  100. 4:14consider gender when you vote for a
  101. 4:15candidate as long as you're voting for a
  102. 4:17woman but don't vote against a woman
  103. 4:19that would be sexist
  104. 4:21you know it don't vote for a man because
  105. 4:22he's a man but you can't vote for a
  106. 4:24woman because she's a woman they're you
  107. 4:26know they're they're so blatant about it
  108. 4:28hey I guess the argument I'm trying to
  109. 4:33think of what would be the argument
  110. 4:34against them I guess the argument
  111. 4:36against it would be saying that well
  112. 4:38women have suffered for so many years
  113. 4:40that they're trying to catch up
  114. 4:42basically so what would you say to that
  115. 4:44that it's not true because we've been
  116. 4:46left out of that discussion then men
  117. 4:48have also suffered for many we have a
  118. 4:51long list of issues that would be the
  119. 4:54number one priority of the Equal Rights
  120. 4:55Movement if they affected women as
  121. 4:57directly as they affected men one of
  122. 5:00them that were now talking about is is
  123. 5:03abortion that the total lack of choice
  124. 5:05that men have we have far fewer choices
  125. 5:07than women had even before abortion was
  126. 5:10legalized another one was the draft that
  127. 5:13I mentioned healthcare there's another
  128. 5:16one is if the male life expectancy four
  129. 5:21or six years whatever it is now before
  130. 5:24men instead of six years after man that
  131. 5:26would be the number one health issue of
  132. 5:28our time that would be on the news every
  133. 5:29gender genocide would be in the news
  134. 5:31every night but as it is if you googled
  135. 5:35low male life expectancy I haven't done
  136. 5:38this lately but you know I'm sure if you
  137. 5:41did it from say the period of 1970 to
  138. 5:432005 anyway I bet 95 percent of the time
  139. 5:48you read the article of whatever comes
  140. 5:51up and it's about how low male life
  141. 5:55expectancy hurts women you know that the
  142. 5:57poverty rate for widows the low there
  143. 6:00aren't enough eligible men women are
  144. 6:02elderly women are lonely because there
  145. 6:04aren't enough men around you know things
  146. 6:05like that
  147. 6:06we can't even die and get credit for
  148. 6:08having problems but it's a true I mean
  149. 6:14it's like dying is one more thing men do
  150. 6:16to make life tough on women conspiracy
  151. 6:21get it together so women don't suffer so
  152. 6:23much so I want to come back to the draft
  153. 6:26because I've brought this topic up to a
  154. 6:29couple people while talking about this
  155. 6:31documentary and
  156. 6:32like immense rights what do they need
  157. 6:33rights for and so there were a list of
  158. 6:35things that I found really fascinating
  159. 6:36it like the male reproductive rights
  160. 6:39that they they virtually don't really
  161. 6:40have any and then the draft and whenever
  162. 6:43I bring up the draft people say well
  163. 6:46that's not an effect anymore the draft
  164. 6:47isn't sitting around anymore
  165. 6:48and then I say but still at 18 years old
  166. 6:51men have to register for the draft what
  167. 6:55would you say to that argument that well
  168. 6:57the draft doesn't really count anymore
  169. 6:58because it's not around okay well one
  170. 7:01thing is that even if if the president
  171. 7:04using that example you know said we
  172. 7:06might need daycares more daycare centers
  173. 7:11and preschools and so just in case I
  174. 7:13want all women to register their bodies
  175. 7:15for the you know that that would be
  176. 7:19horrendous that and it's it's signing
  177. 7:24over control when you register for the
  178. 7:26draft you sign over sovereignty of your
  179. 7:29body I taught a course I was telling you
  180. 7:32before that I had no game plan when I
  181. 7:34started this and so one of the things I
  182. 7:36did was teach the probably the first
  183. 7:39college-level course on men's issues
  184. 7:41what Tufts University and that those are
  185. 7:44smart students you know Tufts is a good
  186. 7:46school and I did it really because I
  187. 7:48wanted there was research I needed to
  188. 7:51sign it you have for class full of free
  189. 7:55researchers and it worked out to be good
  190. 7:58because then suddenly I became you know
  191. 8:00a visiting lecturer at Tufts University
  192. 8:01that added more credibility to what I
  193. 8:03was saying and I didn't even think of
  194. 8:05that that I just wanted some research
  195. 8:06done but I started out one of the
  196. 8:09classes by saying I don't understand
  197. 8:12this fuss women are making about
  198. 8:14rape I mean it's over so fast a lot its
  199. 8:16I know women who you know fantasize
  200. 8:19about it and like what's the big deal
  201. 8:22and people gave me all the you know
  202. 8:28those arguments against what the
  203. 8:30ridiculous thing that I just said and
  204. 8:32they were talking about how but you lose
  205. 8:33control over your body you're forced to
  206. 8:36do things against your will you're
  207. 8:37afraid you know you think you might die
  208. 8:39even if you don't you know they just
  209. 8:41went on and on with all the things that
  210. 8:42I said okay
  211. 8:44today's taught today's class is actually
  212. 8:47not about rape today's class is about
  213. 8:49the draft everything you said about rape
  214. 8:51is what the draft is that's what it does
  215. 8:53to your body you know you're the
  216. 8:56government decides what your body will
  217. 8:58do what your body will wear and where
  218. 9:00it's going to do it your body if the
  219. 9:02government decides to can send you into
  220. 9:03danger it can have you killed you can be
  221. 9:06scared you know and traumatic
  222. 9:08traumatized for the rest of your life
  223. 9:10the government decides all of these
  224. 9:12things and you have no control over it
  225. 9:17and when feminism started the draft was
  226. 9:22very very real the Vietnam was war was
  227. 9:25going on men were being drafted you know
  228. 9:27so eighteen year old women were
  229. 9:30protesting the streets talking about you
  230. 9:32know the lack of decision over there
  231. 9:35their themselves lack of control over my
  232. 9:37body myself and Menken to anything and
  233. 9:39their peers were being forced into the
  234. 9:42Ananta fight for their lives so do you
  235. 9:47think you kind of
  236. 10:00so I wouldn't bring something else's a
  237. 10:03little bit tangent from what we've been
  238. 10:05talking about so I do want to come back
  239. 10:06to what I've been talking about but this
  240. 10:09just came to mind and I wanted to see
  241. 10:11your take on this so are you ready good
  242. 10:15so all these arguments for not arguments
  243. 10:19but all these men's issues that you
  244. 10:22bring up that are really important that
  245. 10:23that people should be passing that are
  246. 10:26less legislation for and all these
  247. 10:28things they're all you know valid
  248. 10:31arguments that don't that are
  249. 10:32underreported in the media these men's
  250. 10:36issues and the progress that feminism
  251. 10:39has made it you said you're a pro-choice
  252. 10:41I mean it's great progress for women so
  253. 10:44so you're not necessarily putting down
  254. 10:46women and feminism and what they've done
  255. 10:48for women you're just saying that
  256. 10:51there's another side to the coin is that
  257. 10:54what you're saying or or do you think
  258. 10:55that feminism has made bad progress it's
  259. 11:01it's it has made a lot of mistakes there
  260. 11:03are a lot of policies that are mistaken
  261. 11:05and it's it's also been fighting against
  262. 11:11you know not just being silent about
  263. 11:14men's issues but fighting against them
  264. 11:17like joint custody you know they're
  265. 11:19lobbying vigorously against it when they
  266. 11:22should be Karen de crow the former
  267. 11:25president of now that I mentioned she's
  268. 11:27she said we should be jamming it down
  269. 11:29men's throat so we shouldn't be fighting
  270. 11:31against it because women will never
  271. 11:33compete as equals with men on the job
  272. 11:35market as long as they have the extra
  273. 11:37burden of child care they need just to
  274. 11:39share it and and the men's rights all
  275. 11:42the men's rights people that I know of
  276. 11:45are supportive of women's issues one of
  277. 11:50the big I'm going to get back to this in
  278. 11:51a second one of the major differences
  279. 11:54between what I would call the
  280. 11:56egalitarianism and what feminism is that
  281. 12:00is is doing is that
  282. 12:03feminists look at men and women as
  283. 12:05basically competitors were basically
  284. 12:07opposites we feel powerless so you must
  285. 12:09feel powerful you know we if if we help
  286. 12:14you
  287. 12:15you're hurting us you know we have to
  288. 12:17catch up as the way you put it and I
  289. 12:21think that's a fundamental mistake I
  290. 12:23think the basic relationship between men
  291. 12:26and women is not one of competition it's
  292. 12:30one of interdependence and so by
  293. 12:33opposing work on men's issues
  294. 12:37there's no way women well you know we
  295. 12:39can't we we have to do this together and
  296. 12:42and men's rights people that I know of
  297. 12:45understand that so even if women didn't
  298. 12:49want to equally we would be insisting on
  299. 12:52it we don't want that extra burden we we
  300. 12:55recognize that's an extra burden for us
  301. 12:57if if if you and I are in a relationship
  302. 13:00and you can only make 77% of what I can
  303. 13:04make then it makes sense when we have
  304. 13:06children make sense for you to stay home
  305. 13:08and for me to work twice as many hours I
  306. 13:10don't want that's not the option that I
  307. 13:13want you know I want I want to be able
  308. 13:15to have the option of saying well let's
  309. 13:16both you know share this joy of raising
  310. 13:19children and then if the relationships
  311. 13:21breaks down you get custody now I have
  312. 13:25two households to support because of
  313. 13:27this so-called advantage you know so we
  314. 13:29don't see that as an advantage but
  315. 13:31feminism too much you know when FEM ms
  316. 13:35magazine had an article I remember about
  317. 13:38joint custody and my women should oppose
  318. 13:41it and what they said was that children
  319. 13:45are a bargaining chip was the phrase
  320. 13:47they use in in a divorce for a better or
  321. 13:50better financial settlement you know
  322. 13:54they they don't see that okay we're in
  323. 13:58this together we we need for feminism by
  324. 14:03putting down mens ish issues and trying
  325. 14:05to work towards equality it's it's like
  326. 14:08you you
  327. 14:10nailing your right foot to the ground
  328. 14:12and then trying to walk to the other
  329. 14:14side of the room you can't you you have
  330. 14:16to walk together you can't do it it's
  331. 14:19very good point never really thought
  332. 14:20about it like that that men want women
  333. 14:22to succeed so because if you're a
  334. 14:25relationship that's you're together in
  335. 14:27it now you're a team
  336. 14:29I guess feminists would say that and
  337. 14:33that and that's why you know some of the
  338. 14:35statistics really on on equal pay to are
  339. 14:42not really you if you want to measure
  340. 14:45someone standard of living you don't
  341. 14:46measure what they earn you measure what
  342. 14:48they consume and because men and women
  343. 14:50are in relationships woman's rate of
  344. 14:53consumption equals or surpasses men's
  345. 14:56rate of consumption you know if you look
  346. 14:57at health care dollars at entertainment
  347. 15:01personal products that you know if
  348. 15:06you're not if if you're not making any
  349. 15:10money and you were still living in the
  350. 15:12same house you know it's not like
  351. 15:14black-white relation you know if the
  352. 15:17average white is work is earning more
  353. 15:19than the average black that that does
  354. 15:21say something a lot more direct about
  355. 15:24what a black standard of living is but
  356. 15:26not for men and women we're in this
  357. 15:27together
  358. 15:28and that's why when I was talking about
  359. 15:30the rewards that women get from raising
  360. 15:33children it's um if we're it if we're in
  361. 15:37a marriage you're getting the same
  362. 15:39financial reward and I want that option
  363. 15:43I guess one of I just thought of
  364. 15:51something
  365. 15:56because I mentioned affirmative action
  366. 15:58before and I one of the ways that I like
  367. 16:01to challenge people with whether they
  368. 16:03believe in a principle or not do you
  369. 16:05really believe in the principle of
  370. 16:07affirmative action as I'll say raising
  371. 16:10children is a legit legitimate work
  372. 16:12doesn't it's not only legitimate and
  373. 16:14important I mean the women who were
  374. 16:15staying home raising they're not
  375. 16:16deadbeats are they there they're
  376. 16:17performing you know yeah that's
  377. 16:19legitimate work there is a documented
  378. 16:25history of discrimination against men in
  379. 16:28this work right because the custody used
  380. 16:31we used to have the tender years
  381. 16:33doctrine women would mothers would
  382. 16:34automatically get custody unless they
  383. 16:36were proven unfit that's that's
  384. 16:38documented history yeah
  385. 16:41statistically this still persists right
  386. 16:44women are still getting custody nineteen
  387. 16:46eighty five ninety percent of the time
  388. 16:48yeah okay those are the three things you
  389. 16:50need for to kick in an affirmative
  390. 16:52action program we have a career we have
  391. 16:55a documented history of discrimination
  392. 16:57and statistically the pattern can
  393. 16:59persists are you prepared to take
  394. 17:01affirmative action to increase the
  395. 17:03number of men raising children are you
  396. 17:05prepared to tell judges you know to
  397. 17:08favor fathers until things equal out and
  398. 17:11don't say I can't find enough fathers
  399. 17:13who are qualified you have to train them
  400. 17:15the way affirmative action works and you
  401. 17:18know 95 percent of people who say
  402. 17:20they're in favor of affirmative action
  403. 17:22suddenly say well no this is it's not
  404. 17:24not here you know this is too important
  405. 17:27Oh more important like brain surgery
  406. 17:28where we have affirmative action to get
  407. 17:31women in those schools more important
  408. 17:32you know it's it's most people really do
  409. 17:35not subscribe to the principles most
  410. 17:37most of the people who are calling
  411. 17:39themselves feminists and calling the
  412. 17:40shots or really have a have another
  413. 17:43agenda that's non equality and that's
  414. 17:46that's the problem that's why we haven't
  415. 17:48really solved there are a lot of
  416. 17:50feminists like Karen de Crowe who do
  417. 17:51believe in the principle but there are
  418. 17:53too many who don't and they they're in
  419. 17:55position of power
