  1. 0:00The US military [music] says it's
  2. 0:01conducting fresh strikes on Iran just
  3. 0:03hours after President Trump said that a
  4. 0:05ceasefire with Iran was over. It said
  5. 0:08the strikes were aimed at degrading
  6. 0:10Iran's ability to threaten the freedom
  7. 0:12of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
  8. 0:15Earlier Mr. Trump labeled the leadership
  9. 0:17in Tehran sick and scum and declared
  10. 0:19talks between the two countries were a
  11. 0:21waste of time. Last night the US struck
  12. 0:24over 80 Iranian targets including the
  13. 0:27southern port city of Bandar Abbas after
  14. 0:29three oil tankers were attacked in the
  15. 0:31Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated
  16. 0:34hitting a number of US military bases
  17. 0:36across the region including in Bahrain
  18. 0:39and Kuwait. Jeremy Bowen has the latest.
  19. 0:45>> This was Bandar Abbas under attack by
  20. 0:48the Americans last night.
  21. 0:52It's the Iranian port that overlooks the
  22. 0:54Strait of Hormuz.
  23. 0:57It is a serious escalation with Iran
  24. 0:59hitting back with its own attacks on US
  25. 1:01bases. All driven by the Iranian
  26. 1:04regime's determination to retain its
  27. 1:06capacity to choke the global economy by
  28. 1:09controlling the Strait.
  29. 1:12And by Donald Trump's reluctance to hand
  30. 1:15Iran a strategic victory after a
  31. 1:18disastrous war.
  32. 1:20>> I don't want to deal with them anyway.
  33. 1:21They're scum. You know what scum is?
  34. 1:23They're scum. They're sick people.
  35. 1:25They're led by sick people.
  36. 1:27And they're they're vicious violent
  37. 1:29people.
  38. 1:30And if they had a nuclear weapon, they'd
  39. 1:32use it. As far as I'm concerned, it's
  40. 1:34over. I'll speak to our
  41. 1:36>> President Trump was speaking at the NATO
  42. 1:38summit in Turkey. He's referring to
  43. 1:40talks with Iran which continue but our
  44. 1:42one source said now very tense. It won't
  45. 1:45be his last word on the subject. In
  46. 1:48free-ranging diplomacy he also has
  47. 1:50coveted Greenland, ripped into European
  48. 1:53allies, but gave Ukraine's President
  49. 1:56Volodymyr Zelensky a major boost,
  50. 1:58agreeing that the Ukrainians can build
  51. 2:00Patriot interceptor missiles.
  52. 2:03>> Now initiative
  53. 2:05moved to our hands, not totally, but
  54. 2:07moved. We are trying to move this war to
  55. 2:10the sky from the battlefield. That's why
  56. 2:13we now began to control
  57. 2:16the battlefield.
  58. 2:19>> The US used so many Patriot missiles
  59. 2:21during the war with Iran that its own
  60. 2:23stocks are low. President Zelensky has
  61. 2:26asked repeatedly for US permission to
  62. 2:29build Ukraine's own under license.
  63. 2:33Ukraine needs them to intercept Russian
  64. 2:36ballistic missiles. Kyiv was once again
  65. 2:39under [music] attack last night.
  66. 2:41It is a big US concession to Ukraine and
  67. 2:44a move away from Donald Trump's affinity
  68. 2:47with Russia's President Putin.
  69. 2:50But President Trump's scattergun
  70. 2:52diplomacy has not brought the wars in
  71. 2:55Ukraine and in Iran anywhere close to
  72. 2:58resolution or even a secure ceasefire.
  73. 3:04The multi-day funeral for Iran's late
  74. 3:06Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
  75. 3:09has crossed the border into Iraq with
  76. 3:12tens of thousands of Iraqi supporters of
  77. 3:14the Tehran regime mourning in Najaf, an
  78. 3:17Iraqi city holy to Shia Muslims who are
  79. 3:20the majority in both countries.
  80. 3:23The US and Israel killed the Ayatollah
  81. 3:25on the first day of the war believing
  82. 3:28his death would precipitate the fall of
  83. 3:30the regime. Instead, his funeral has
  84. 3:32become a symbol of the regime surviving
  85. 3:35its worst nightmare, a joint attack by
  86. 3:38the Americans and the Israelis.
  87. 3:41The Americans have released this Top Gun
  88. 3:44style video of their Navy in the Arabian
  89. 3:46Sea. As their President promised,
  90. 3:48they've hit Iran again tonight.
  91. 3:51But America has come up against the
  92. 3:54limits of its military power. It has not
  93. 3:56broken the will of the regime in Tehran.
  94. 3:59And it's hard to see how more strikes
  95. 4:01can do that
  96. 4:03where all the others did not.
  97. 4:07>> And Jeremy is with me. And to that
  98. 4:09point, Jeremy, the situation looks bleak
  99. 4:11tonight, but what can the US achieve
  100. 4:13with restarting these hostilities?
  101. 4:15>> I'm not sure they can achieve anything
  102. 4:16more apart from breaking more things
  103. 4:19in Iran. Uh they've demonstrated
  104. 4:22massively that they can do that.
  105. 4:24So, the question is how do do they
  106. 4:27reverse out of all of this, and how does
  107. 4:29the world actually
  108. 4:30deal with this big issue about the
  109. 4:32Strait of Hormuz? It's got to be
  110. 4:34diplomacy, surely. It's got to be the
  111. 4:36talks. Now, sources from within the the
  112. 4:39the sort of the mediation process there
  113. 4:42are saying that while neither side is
  114. 4:44walking away from the talks, Iran or the
  115. 4:46US, uh
  116. 4:48it's there's a lot of heavy lifting
  117. 4:51necessary to try to get them talking
  118. 4:53again. I think that they're probably at
  119. 4:55a point now where it's pretty
  120. 4:57stalemated.
  121. 4:58Uh and what we may well continue to see
  122. 5:02are these es- escalations and upsurges
  123. 5:05without going back to full-on war.
  124. 5:07Donald Trump, before he left Turkey, was
  125. 5:09asked,
  126. 5:10"Does this mean the war's on again?"
  127. 5:12And actually, he said, "Well, no, it
  128. 5:14doesn't." But then they've gone ahead
  129. 5:16with these strikes, which he was
  130. 5:17threatening as well. In fact, it was a
  131. 5:18pretty classic day of Trumpian
  132. 5:20diplomacy. Different kinds of messages
  133. 5:22swirling around the place. With
  134. 5:24President Zelenskyy in Ukraine,
  135. 5:27that
  136. 5:28uh bid by him to make Ukraine's own
  137. 5:32Patriot missiles has been top of his
  138. 5:34shopping list for ages, and he's got it.
  139. 5:37And don't forget last year he had this
  140. 5:39huge row with Trump, of course, in the
  141. 5:41Oval Office when Trump said, "Uh you've
  142. 5:42got no cards."
  143. 5:44But now
  144. 5:45Donald Trump has gone from saying what
  145. 5:48about a month ago that the he was
  146. 5:50dealing with very reasonable decent
  147. 5:51people in Iran to saying that they're
  148. 5:53scum.
  149. 5:54And then pulling back a little bit. So,
  150. 5:56I think we're going to be continuing to
  151. 5:58see these oscillations. This is not over
  152. 6:00and it's not going to end anytime soon.
  153. 6:03>> Jeremy, thank you. Jeremy Bowen there.
