iPhone Duo Review: Why I’m Keeping It Over My Pro Max — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00So, it's been a little over a week, week
- 0:01and a half for me with the iPhone Duo.
- 0:03And before I get into how it's actually
- 0:06been living with it, I want to address
- 0:08kind of the elephant in the room. If
- 0:10you've been anywhere near Reddit or even
- 0:12the Macr's forums since launch, you've
- 0:15probably seen the photos of inner
- 0:16displays cracking along the hinge. Apple
- 0:19has responded saying it's aware of an
- 0:21issue affecting a small number of units
- 0:24and telling anyone affected to contact
- 0:26Apple Care for a replacement. Apple has
- 0:29also said that affected units tend to
- 0:31show the problem shortly after purchase.
- 0:33So, this isn't something that you need
- 0:35to worry about creeping up on you in a
- 0:37few months from now, at least according
- 0:38to Apple. I also think it's important to
- 0:40keep this in perspective. A few dozen
- 0:43posts online can feel like an epidemic,
- 0:45but relative to how many of these phones
- 0:47are out there, it seems like it's
- 0:50probably a smaller sample size than a
- 0:52lot of people think. Some of the photos
- 0:54floating around may not even be real.
- 0:56I'm not shilling for Apple. This is a,
- 0:58you know, something that happens with
- 0:59the first generation product and if
- 1:01you're affected, it sucks. I totally get
- 1:03it and it is unacceptable, but it
- 1:05happens. So, go get it replaced and
- 1:08hopefully the next one works out. Now,
- 1:10for me, I absolutely have been loving
- 1:12mine. I'd say the outer screen is
- 1:14something that I use for 70% of the
- 1:16time, doing normal phone stuff, just
- 1:19checking notifications, responding to
- 1:21emails, texts, all of that. And then
- 1:23when I need to do something more, I need
- 1:25more productivity, I unfold it. What
- 1:27surprised me the most is how much I
- 1:29actually enjoy using it unfolded.
- 1:31Especially in portrait mode, vertical
- 1:33video looks excellent this way. It makes
- 1:35the Instagram app a lot less awkward. It
- 1:38just fills the screen in a way that
- 1:39makes more sense. And multitasking with
- 1:41the video playing on the top portion and
- 1:43an app on the bottom has quickly become
- 1:45one of my favorite things about this
- 1:46phone. It's the kind of thing that makes
- 1:48like using my iPhone 18 Pro Max when I
- 1:51had picture and picture floating around.
- 1:52I had to move it around out of the way
- 1:53when I was trying to use another app
- 1:55like this just solves that problem and
- 1:56it makes it so much more enjoyable. Hey
- 1:58guys, before we continue on with the
- 1:59rest of today's video, I do just want to
- 2:01take a quick break to let you know more
- 2:02about today's sponsor, Interext. Your
- 2:05photos, documents, and backups, they say
- 2:07a lot about you. So, who can see them in
- 2:10the cloud? Well, that's where today's
- 2:11sponsor, Interext, comes in. Interext is
- 2:14open-source privacy first cloud storage
- 2:17with end-to-end zero knowledge
- 2:19encryption. So only you can access your
- 2:21data, not even interext. It also uses
- 2:24postquantum encryption and has been
- 2:26independently audited by security.
- 2:28Here's internet photos on iPhone. I just
- 2:31turn on automatic backup and my photos
- 2:33and videos are backed up to encrypted
- 2:35storage in the background and synced
- 2:37across my devices. Internet works
- 2:40alongside your Apple setup with apps for
- 2:42every major platform. You can also back
- 2:44up files from your laptop, NAS, or Home
- 2:47Lab. And Ultimate includes lifetime
- 2:49access to a growing privacy suite with a
- 2:52VPN, antivirus, and Internext Mail.
- 2:54Subscriptions start at just $11.99 a
- 2:56month, and through our link, you can try
- 2:58the entry plan for just $1.79
- 3:01for the first month. But the lifetime
- 3:03option is even more interesting.
- 3:05Ultimate gives you 5 terabytes for a
- 3:07onetime payment of $599.
- 3:10Compare it with its regular $31.99
- 3:12monthly price. That's less than 19
- 3:15months of subscription payments. You
- 3:17keep your purchase storage and features
- 3:19without reoccurring fees, and future
- 3:21price increases or storage reductions
- 3:23won't affect your plan. There's also a
- 3:2530-day money back guarantee so you can
- 3:27test backups and recovery on your own
- 3:28devices. Check our link in the
- 3:30description down below for an exclusive
- 3:32offer that's even better than the one
- 3:34that's advertised on Internext's
- 3:35website. Thanks Interex for sponsoring
- 3:37this video. The fingerprint sensor is
- 3:39actually growing on me. I wasn't sure
- 3:41how I'd feel coming from Face ID, but
- 3:43honestly, I think it's in a really great
- 3:45spot. It's so much easier to find
- 3:46without looking, and it's been very
- 3:48accurate. And I haven't liked uh
- 3:50foldables with this type of fingerprint
- 3:51sensor on the side button before. And I
- 3:53think it's because the power buttons and
- 3:55the volume button gets kind of confusing
- 3:57on some of those other ones. here since
- 3:59this is the only button on this side.
- 4:01Uh, and I also really don't like that
- 4:03the volume buttons are on top. It is
- 4:05fairly awkward, but I guess the
- 4:07trade-off is fine because you have the
- 4:10ability to easily locate that
- 4:12fingerprint sensor. So, it's kind of a
- 4:14nice little trade-off, I guess. Another
- 4:16thing is unlocking it with your Apple
- 4:18Watch has been so good that it genuinely
- 4:20feels like Face ID. The only problem is
- 4:23that at times it's almost too good. So,
- 4:25if you ever tap the screen as you're
- 4:27entering it into your pocket or like
- 4:28accidentally swipe up as you're putting
- 4:29it in your pocket, you'll hear the
- 4:31vibrate or feel the vibration on your
- 4:33wrist and that indicates that it's been
- 4:34unlocked. And sometimes that happens
- 4:37quite a bit and so I accidentally do a
- 4:40couple of phone calls or taps on the
- 4:41screen that you probably don't want to
- 4:43do. The other thing is if you're
- 4:44wondering how far away you need to be
- 4:46from your watch and your phone, I've
- 4:48noticed that if someone took my phone
- 4:49and was standing next to me, it would
- 4:50still unlock, but if they moved like 2
- 4:52feet away, it would stop. So, if you're
- 4:54across the house, the room, or whatever,
- 4:56you don't need to worry about someone
- 4:57being able to unlock with your Apple
- 4:59Watch. I am also well aware that this is
- 5:01not something that replaces Face ID and
- 5:04that you need to go out and buy an Apple
- 5:05Watch just for this reason. This is kind
- 5:07of one of those it's a very nice to have
- 5:10feature because you already are in the
- 5:11ecosystem and so entrenched with Apple
- 5:13that you have an Apple Watch. I am not
- 5:15saying that the solution for Face ID is
- 5:17to go and buy a watch, but since I
- 5:20already have one, it does actually make
- 5:22a huge difference. Honestly, I think the
- 5:24biggest pain point are the cameras. And
- 5:26it's like 90% fine for daily use. Every
- 5:29once in a while though, I am reminded
- 5:31about how much it stinks to not have a
- 5:32telephoto lens. But I still don't think
- 5:35that makes me want to switch back uh
- 5:37especially to my 18 Pro Max because I'm
- 5:39going to be honest with you, after a
- 5:41week and a half of using this and then
- 5:42picking up an 18 Pro Max, it feels
- 5:44comically large, comically tall. Um I'm
- 5:48just so used to this form factor now
- 5:50that it's hard to go back. But yeah, as
- 5:51far as the photos go, um I think that
- 5:54the main sensor is really good. Uh it
- 5:57takes photos and videos quite well.
- 5:59Here's a couple of samples that you've
- 6:00been looking at. Let me know in the
- 6:02comments down below if there are any
- 6:04things uh issues, discrepancies that you
- 6:07think is not worth it. But yeah, I mean
- 6:08these two sensors are both 48 megapixel
- 6:11uh ultra wide and wide angle. And I
- 6:14think honestly they look just like any
- 6:16other iPhone the past however many years
- 6:18that we've had these 48 megapixel
- 6:20sensors on them. I don't notice a
- 6:21difference. Even though there is a
- 6:22difference uh definitely between the 18
- 6:24Pro Max's version with the variable
- 6:26aperture and all of that, there are
- 6:28hardware differences and I'm sure in low
- 6:30light that those perform better, but
- 6:32like honestly I don't take a lot of
- 6:34photos on a daily basis. I do unfold my
- 6:37phone and do a lot of multitasking and
- 6:39media consumption and honestly I've been
- 6:41doing a lot of work on this phone and
- 6:43because I can split screen apps and all
- 6:45that that like I just I would trade
- 6:47those all in for a pretty standard
- 6:50average slightly above average set of
- 6:52cameras. It does suck that I don't have
- 6:54the telephoto lens at times when I would
- 6:56like to zoom in. Obviously you have seen
- 6:58probably some zoomedin pictures all the
- 7:00way from 4x to 10x. It's digital zoom.
- 7:03It's not great, but it'll get you by if
- 7:06uh you know, you don't need it to be a
- 7:07perfect picture, but you need to capture
- 7:09something. Now, battery life for me has
- 7:10landed somewhere between a 18 Pro and an
- 7:1318 Pro Max. It's not bad at all. It can
- 7:16definitely get me through the day. Um I
- 7:19haven't noticed anything like
- 7:20substantial where it's like this is the
- 7:22best battery life, especially since I am
- 7:24using both screens interchangeably.
- 7:26However, if you do just go through a
- 7:28day, and there has been one of those
- 7:29where I'm mostly using the outer screen,
- 7:32you can get by at least one maybe two
- 7:35days of just using this screen. Uh, but
- 7:37the moment you start using and watching
- 7:39a lot of content, unfolding it and all
- 7:41that, it starts to drain your battery
- 7:42more, which makes a lot of sense. Now, I
- 7:44know this sounds like a pretty glowing
- 7:46review, and that's because I'm maybe I'm
- 7:47still, you know, in the honeymoon phase,
- 7:50but uh, yeah, I really do love this
- 7:52phone, but not everything is perfect
- 7:54yet. Some apps are still needing to be
- 7:56updated to really take advantage of this
- 7:58form factor. Safari in particular was
- 8:00horrendous at first, but then a
- 8:03wonderful developer whose name slips me
- 8:05at this time, but he developed an
- 8:07extension called Wider and that pretty
- 8:09much fixed the issue for me. It has made
- 8:12this phone absolutely fantastic when it
- 8:15comes to browsing web and Safari. And
- 8:16honestly, all it does is just shift all
- 8:18the content to expand and take up the
- 8:21entire screen, which is absolutely
- 8:23fantastic. Um, Apple at some point, I
- 8:26feel like, is going to copy this. They
- 8:27just have to. It just doesn't make any
- 8:29sense when apps or Safari is just
- 8:31cutting off and wasting this right edge
- 8:34of the display. I don't understand the
- 8:36thought process behind it. I guess they
- 8:38just didn't want the buttons and
- 8:39everything. But that's like why in my
- 8:41opinion liquid glass in the transparency
- 8:42aspect fits in or just like have it
- 8:45disappear when you're not, you know, or
- 8:48when you don't need it. And I just don't
- 8:50understand why they didn't let it just
- 8:52be a thing. The buttons really don't get
- 8:55in the way that often. So, um, I
- 8:58absolutely love the apps that are
- 9:00optimized. There is different levels of
- 9:02optimization like I talked about in my
- 9:04initial hands-on when I got it last week
- 9:06or a week and a half ago. Um, and some a
- 9:09lot more apps are just becoming more and
- 9:11more optimized. But, um, I need the ones
- 9:15that I use on a regular basis to at
- 9:16least get to that level one optimization
- 9:19where at least the when you unfold it,
- 9:21the screen, a majority of it is taken
- 9:23up. Maybe this right edge is still kind
- 9:25of reserved for those buttons. Uh but
- 9:28there's nothing there yet, which is what
- 9:29some of the apps do. This app called
- 9:31Golf Now where you book tea times like
- 9:33this needs to be updated. Uh but then
- 9:36there are apps like sleeper which wasn't
- 9:39updated. This is for fantasy football
- 9:41and it did get updated and they did a
- 9:43fantastic job and kind of disregarded
- 9:45the rules or at least the unwritten
- 9:47rules that it seems for updating these
- 9:49apps where you put your toggles and your
- 9:51menu bar stuff on this right side. They
- 9:53just blew up their app and did a split
- 9:55screen when you open it. So you get
- 9:57fantasy and like betting scores and just
- 9:59score sports scores overall on this
- 10:01side, but really on this when you close
- 10:03it, you're supposed to get the controls
- 10:05over here. They left their app
- 10:07completely the same where the controls
- 10:08are still at the bottom and just filled
- 10:10the entire screen. Kind of like that.
- 10:13Not sure why not a lot of the developers
- 10:15are doing that. That's not Apple's
- 10:16design language, but it kind of makes
- 10:18sense. It's like what the other
- 10:19foldables do. Um, so you get more
- 10:22information and you're not cutting it
- 10:24off. I don't know, it just works really,
- 10:25really well. And then there are other
- 10:28apps out there, uh, you know, like I
- 10:30said, Netflix is the gold standard where
- 10:32they just went above and beyond. You
- 10:34have flex mode, this mode here, where
- 10:36you get controls at the bottom, and then
- 10:38that whole digital reflection that I
- 10:40talked about where the content that's
- 10:41playing up here is being reflected on
- 10:44this bottom portion. And that's actually
- 10:45not happening. It is a thoughtful
- 10:48digital reflection that Netflix added. I
- 10:50just need all of the app developers out
- 10:52there to uh start developing and
- 10:55updating your applications so that we
- 10:57can get a really good experience on the
- 11:00Duo. Even though it has been fantastic
- 11:02for me, again, a lot of these apps just
- 11:04need updating. And uh I'm kidding. I'm
- 11:06not, you know, advocating that all of
- 11:08these developers go out there and do
- 11:10this for me. I'm hoping that they're
- 11:11already doing it for their app and their
- 11:13business. But, uh, yeah, that's the only
- 11:15thing that's really holding me back and
- 11:16not having a telephoto lens is that just
- 11:18some of the apps sometimes kind of stink
- 11:20to use on the front screen and when you
- 11:22open it up, it's just a lot of wasted
- 11:24space. But overall, a majority of the
- 11:26things that I use are perfectly
- 11:28optimized or at least that level one,
- 11:30one and a half optimization where it
- 11:32works enough and it takes up most of the
- 11:34screen. But yeah, absolutely love this
- 11:36phone. um people that I don't know that
- 11:40I am out and about. I'm tapping to pay.
- 11:43Uh I was in an elevator in New York City
- 11:45in my hotel room. I was not even paying
- 11:47attention to the people in the um
- 11:49elevator and I was using my phone and
- 11:51immediately got the he has the new
- 11:54iPhone duo and they had so many
- 11:56questions. They wanted to see it. I
- 11:57mean, shout out to them. They were super
- 12:00cool. Uh I really enjoyed talking to
- 12:02them about it. It's just really cool to
- 12:04see people that aren't your typical tech
- 12:06nerds and people that uh are just
- 12:09average people out on the street that
- 12:10know Apple as a brand, have an iPhone,
- 12:13but know that this exists. And that's
- 12:15the crazy thing. And they want it and
- 12:17they I saw one the other day at dinner,
- 12:19a a mom or actually it was a grandmother
- 12:22uh taking care of her grandchild using
- 12:24it in that, you know, having the case on
- 12:27it, the kickstand, letting their kid
- 12:29watch something at dinner uh so they can
- 12:31enjoy their meal. And I was shocked. And
- 12:33that was the first person that wasn't
- 12:34like a friend of mine that I knew would
- 12:36be like a day one buyer because they're
- 12:38a huge uh technology lover or an actual
- 12:41reviewer friend of mine that also got
- 12:43one as a review unit. That was the first
- 12:45out in the wild unit that wasn't my own
- 12:47that I saw. And that was pretty cool.
- 12:49Like just someone in their probably 60s
- 12:52using it as a multi-functioning tool.
- 12:54It's their phone. But also now I've got
- 12:56a little tablet to help out when, you
- 12:58know, my grandson or granddaughter is
- 13:00crying and I just need to get them
- 13:02something to occupy their attention for
- 13:04a little bit. Like it's cool to see this
- 13:06out there. So many people have come up
- 13:07to me again who have seen it and have
- 13:09asked, "Is that the new iPhone?" I have
- 13:10used other foldables in the past in
- 13:12public and I have never experienced that
- 13:15before and I just think Apple really
- 13:16brings attention to this space. So that
- 13:17now we can have more and more foldables
- 13:20compete in the market and I think this
- 13:22is a really good thing. But I would love
- 13:23to hear from you in the comments down
- 13:24below. Obviously, this is a pretty
- 13:26glowing review. I understand that there
- 13:28are a lot of issues and it does suck
- 13:31that that has happened and I know that
- 13:32Apple has taken care of it and hopefully
- 13:34it has been very seamless and painless
- 13:36for those of you who have had those
- 13:38issues and shame on Apple if it isn't.
- 13:40But I think they are replacing these and
- 13:43I like to think that it's something that
- 13:44they are believing you and taking your
- 13:46word for it because it is probably not
- 13:48your fault. So, go ahead, get a
- 13:50replacement, but let me know in the
- 13:51comments down below if you have one.
- 13:53What do you think? Uh, if you are
- 13:54getting one and you're waiting for yours
- 13:56to come in, did you cancel or are you
- 13:58still going to stick with it? I think
- 14:00you should at least experience it. If
- 14:02you don't like it, you know, you can
- 14:03switch back to something else. But yeah,
- 14:05let me know your thoughts in the
- 14:06comments down below. This has been
- 14:08Nemers. Thanks so much for watching. I
- 14:10look forward to seeing you around in the
- 14:11next
