  1. 0:00hi there and welcome back so far we've
  2. 0:03already started understanding some of
  3. 0:05the principles of what we call
  4. 0:07pharmacodynamics and simply put
  5. 0:09pharmacodynamics means what the drug
  6. 0:12does to the body basically how the drug
  7. 0:15works in the body and with respect to
  8. 0:19pharmacodynamics we've already taken a
  9. 0:21look at a few medications that work by
  10. 0:23direct action and we've also learned
  11. 0:26that the majority of our medications
  12. 0:28work on cellular receptors other as
  13. 0:31agonists doing the same thing as the
  14. 0:34natural substance would or as
  15. 0:37antagonists going onto that receptor
  16. 0:40blocking that receptor and preventing
  17. 0:43our natural substances from binding onto
  18. 0:47the receptor
  19. 0:48and one of the goals in this chapter
  20. 0:50will be to advance our knowledge of the
  21. 0:53antagonists as we develop a really good
  22. 0:56picture of the drug group that blocks
  23. 0:58the histamine two receptors and since
  24. 1:01the main drug group that we'll be
  25. 1:03discussing needs to be absorbed into the
  26. 1:05system in order to work we're going to
  27. 1:07begin our discussions of
  28. 1:09pharmacokinetics
  29. 1:11and once again the first portion of that
  30. 1:14means drug but the second portion of the
  31. 1:16kinetics portion means movement so in
  32. 1:20other words we're going to begin to
  33. 1:22understand how our drugs move around the
  34. 1:25body
  35. 1:26what the body does to the drug
  36. 1:30and when we're talking about
  37. 1:31pharmacokinetics that'll involve four
  38. 1:34distinct processes absorption
  39. 1:37distribution metabolism and excretion
  40. 1:41and while we are going to get a really
  41. 1:43good picture of each one of the
  42. 1:45processes that's pretty much our main
  43. 1:47goal we're just going to need to picture
  44. 1:50each one of the processes we don't need
  45. 1:53to memorize very much at this point once
  46. 1:56you've pictured each one of the
  47. 1:57processes you can add to that picture as
  48. 2:01you learn about specific drugs
  49. 2:06just a real quick quiz here one of the
  50. 2:09main things that we need to do in this
  51. 2:11chapter is to get a really good picture
  52. 2:13of absorption of drugs distribution of
  53. 2:17drugs around the body metabolism of
  54. 2:19drugs and the excretion of drugs the
  55. 2:22branch of pharmacology that covers these
  56. 2:25is called A
  57. 2:27pharmacokinetics or B pharmacodynamics
  58. 2:32and you are correct if you identified a
  59. 2:35as the answer recall that pharmaco means
  60. 2:38drug or poison and kinetics means
  61. 2:41movement of so pharmacokinetics involves
  62. 2:45the movement of drugs through the body
  63. 2:46and includes the absorption distribution
  64. 2:49metabolism and excretion think of
  65. 2:53pharmacokinetics as being what the body
  66. 2:55does to the drug basically the fate of
  67. 2:59the drug in the system it's a really
  68. 3:02interesting topic so let's jump straight
  69. 3:04into it trying to picture these
  70. 3:07processes
