- 0:13and the abolition of slavery and child
- 0:16labor in the nearly 50 years since the
- 0:19social principles inception the world
- 0:21has changed a lot but the need for the
- 0:23church's statement of social principles
- 0:25is as urgent as ever often its air
- 0:28journey and the deeply United Methodists
- 0:30experience of revision the General
- 0:32Conference is called to approve a more
- 0:34globally relevant document with his
- 0:37strong theological and Biblical
- 0:39grounding and a more focused structure
- 0:42the revised documents global perspective
- 0:44is a resource for mission and ministry
- 0:46equipping churches to do ministry in
- 0:49their local contexts the 2020 revised
- 0:53social principles continues this
- 0:55tradition by continuing to address the
- 0:57concerns facing communities in
- 0:59individuals today
- 1:11so the social principles is the official
- 1:14United Methodist stands on a certain
- 1:16issue that impacts the world social
- 1:20principles provide a critical moral
- 1:22compass for United Methodist Christians
- 1:25and a shared witness a social witness of
- 1:29our shared values I'd like to think of
- 1:32them as as a document that reflects not
- 1:36only the positions of the church but
- 1:38also the interests and whose interests
- 1:40we represent particularly the the
- 1:42vulnerable those who've been most
- 1:43marginalized oppressed in our society I
- 1:47like to think of the social principles
- 1:49as as the values that we hold in common
- 1:53values like justice tolerance respect
- 1:57belonging community love grace they
- 2:01serve as an opportunity for our
- 2:03education our reflection and an
- 2:08opportunity for us to consider the ways
- 2:11in which we apply the faith we proclaim
- 2:16to our daily lives and to the lives of
- 2:20others
- 2:24I use them mostly here at the border
- 2:30church and society when I do hurts when
- 2:37I speak to members of Congress one has
- 2:40pretty different groups to say this is
- 2:43what anonymous Church believes I worked
- 2:46in a social development organization
- 2:48affiliated with our church that assist
- 2:51communities and extreme poverty in Metro

- 2:56education and community organizing in
- 2:58helping them achieve social justice

- 3:59not there in the social principles our
- 4:02pastors and the leaders when they ask
- 4:06how to address those issues around us
- 4:12social principles here in this book of
- 4:16resolutions we can find it there on how
- 4:20to guide our churches in interpreting
- 4:22delicious
- 4:29the social principles are they are not
- 4:32just say you were centered kind of a
- 4:35tool
- 4:36one example is after we drafted the
- 4:39first the first draft actually we are
- 4:45you put unity to hear from many people
- 4:49around the world they send their
- 4:51feedback I don't line females others
- 4:55even just sending forms of letters that
- 5:00opportunity give us the time to read
- 5:03back what people are saying how these
- 5:06principles are working they're a unique
- 5:10context so in that whole process we had
- 5:13many riders from across the world and
- 5:16they work together to create the best
- 5:19statements that they could possibly make
- 5:21those were then woven together by an
- 5:24editorial team and offered to the church
- 5:27for reflection this document called
- 5:29social principles is a global document
- 5:32because it is comprehensive enough to
- 5:34encompass their issues many countries
- 5:36face then now it may be the future it is
- 5:41also concrete enough to make the people
- 5:43of different countries feel that the
- 5:46document speaks to them
- 5:48the process of including many voices at
- 5:51the table to think about their own faith
- 5:55journey and their own context and the
- 5:58issues that they face was really it was
- 6:04not only heartening but it is the best
- 6:07expression of what it is to be the body
- 6:09of Christ and to have the gift of the
- 6:12United Methodist Church as a place to
- 6:15live out our faith
- 6:24you
