  1. 0:04Being the center of isotopic medicine
  2. 0:08and the nuclear application for medicine
  3. 0:12was not only the perfect fit for this
  4. 0:14conference,
  5. 0:16but surprising to all of us who work on
  6. 0:18the ground here in Saskatoon
  7. 0:21to enable these kinds of business events
  8. 0:22to come to our community
  9. 0:24because
  10. 0:26for many of us, we quietly go about our
  11. 0:28lives in this beautiful city and
  12. 0:31unbeknownst to us, there are
  13. 0:32intellectuals residing here who have
  14. 0:35chosen to live here leading the world in
  15. 0:38this kind of science.
  16. 0:41And we were very fortunate to meet Chary
  17. 0:43and Lydia who were the co-chairs of the
  18. 0:46International Conference on Isotopes
  19. 0:48that was organized by the World Council
  20. 0:51on Isotopes here in Saskatoon,
  21. 0:54Saskatchewan.
  22. 0:56Who have changed how we think about our
  23. 0:58city and how we speak about our city
  24. 1:02with regard to nuclear medicine.
  25. 1:15>> The isotopes are themselves are very,
  26. 1:17very important for the energy
  27. 1:19sustainability.
  28. 1:21And if the supply is
  29. 1:24curtailed for any geopolitical reasons
  30. 1:26or whatever it is, tomorrow the our
  31. 1:28hospitals will close.
  32. 1:30Patients will suffer. They actually will
  33. 1:32stop functioning.
  34. 1:35>> Russia and Ukraine, they've been key
  35. 1:37players in the isotopes and nuclear
  36. 1:41technology industry.
  37. 1:44Once the rupture became in, Russia was
  38. 1:48no longer
  39. 1:50a visible player in the industry.
  40. 1:54So, most of the supply
  41. 1:57needed to come from somewhere else. That
  42. 1:59means new technologies to be developed,
  43. 2:02new capabilities to be developed, new
  44. 2:04capacities to be established.
  45. 2:10During the conference
  46. 2:13or around the conference, all of these
  47. 2:15discussions have been initiated. And
  48. 2:18here we are like 3 years later
  49. 2:21and we see that these technologies
  50. 2:23started to be already implemented.
  51. 2:27And that's because people sat down at
  52. 2:30the same table and they're looking to
  53. 2:32get solutions.
  54. 2:35>> Having a conference like the
  55. 2:37International Conference for Isotope
  56. 2:39really did give us the opportunity to
  57. 2:41shine a light on the Canadian Light
  58. 2:44Source and what we have to offer using
  59. 2:46our medical isotope technology. Due to
  60. 2:49some of the global shortages of medical
  61. 2:51isotopes around the world, we took this
  62. 2:54as an opportunity to utilize some of our
  63. 2:57expertise that we have in-house on
  64. 2:59linear accelerator technology and to
  65. 3:01create our own new type of electron
  66. 3:04linear accelerator for medical isotopes.
  67. 3:08>> So, one of the key outcomes from or
  68. 3:09around the conference was the execution
  69. 3:12of the supply agreement
  70. 3:15between the Canadian Nuclear
  71. 3:17Laboratories and C 64 Center
  72. 3:21for the supply of actinium 225 which is
  73. 3:24the most sought after
  74. 3:27isotopes in the world right now with
  75. 3:30high potential of cancer therapy.
  76. 3:34Following the signature of that
  77. 3:36particular agreement
  78. 3:38a new entity has been formed that is
  79. 3:41called Actinium
  80. 3:43which is a joint venture between the
  81. 3:45Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and a
  82. 3:48German entity so that Canada will be
  83. 3:52supplying this key isotope everywhere in
  84. 3:56the world.
  85. 3:59In the nuclear sciences, we consider
  86. 4:02Saskatoon as being an intellectual
  87. 4:04capital.
  88. 4:05>> It is not an industry that I would say
  89. 4:07is heavily dominated by women. And in
  90. 4:10fact, the women in nuclear and women in
  91. 4:12mining organizations in this province
  92. 4:15that are headquartered in Saskatoon have
  93. 4:17exponentially grown as a result of this
  94. 4:20business event. The expansion of our
  95. 4:22students and professors and intellects
  96. 4:25at the Fedoruk Centre and here at the
  97. 4:26University of Saskatchewan and then the
  98. 4:28further expansion of the human capital
  99. 4:30that is going to reside here in
  100. 4:32Saskatoon are induced impacts of a
  101. 4:35business event being here that cannot be
  102. 4:37forgotten. But that Saskatoon is ground
  103. 4:40zero for this sector for nuclear
  104. 4:43applications in energy, in agriculture,
  105. 4:45in medicine.
  106. 4:47And the world needs to know about that
  107. 4:49and come here and not only feel the
  108. 4:51embrace of our community, which is so
  109. 4:53beautiful, but understand that we have
  110. 4:55some incredible intellectual capital
  111. 4:57here that is going to create solutions
  112. 4:59for the future.
