- 0:02Welcome to the fourth lesson of the
- 0:04interior design fundamentals course. My
- 0:06name is Valerie and I'm the owner and
- 0:09lead designer of Viola House. And in
- 0:11this lesson, we'll be covering how we
- 0:13create millwork drawings that are easy
- 0:15to use, easy to read by everyone during
- 0:18the project. Millwork drawings is where
- 0:21your design vision becomes actually
- 0:23buildable. Whatever it is, a custom
- 0:25headboard, kitchen cabinetry, built-in
- 0:28bench, your drawings need to be precise
- 0:30to ensure that they can build exactly as
- 0:34you planned them. In this class, I'll
- 0:36walk you through how I built millwork
- 0:38drawings using rayon design. In my
- 0:41experience, this is the program that
- 0:43allows you to build them faster and more
- 0:45efficient and precise. We'll go through
- 0:48line work and dimensions to materials
- 0:50and annotations. And I'll share my tips
- 0:53and tricks and visual standards I use to
- 0:56keep my drawings clean, efficient, and
- 0:58client ready. And as always, you can
- 1:00download a free template in the
- 1:02description below and follow along. So,
- 1:05let's jump in. So, mule workshop
- 1:07drawings are not just for fabricators.
- 1:09They're one of the most important
- 1:11communication tools for the entire
- 1:13project team including clients,
- 1:15contractors. So today we'll review the
- 1:19mill workshop drawings that we've
- 1:20prepared for this project. It's a lot of
- 1:23information. It's a lot of details and a
- 1:26good mill work drawing should be as
- 1:28detailed as possible. You should include
- 1:31your plan, elevations, a separate
- 1:34section for each element. also
- 1:37dimensions, materials, construction
- 1:40details, all of this to make sure that
- 1:43you can minimize your mistakes and
- 1:46everyone is on the same page and
- 1:49everyone understands what the direction
- 1:51is, what you're working on, what
- 1:53specifically is requested from the
- 1:55contractor, from the fabricator. Can it
- 1:58be done? When you do it as detailed as
- 2:01this, this eliminates a lot of questions
- 2:03and a lot of back and forth between all
- 2:07the parties, everyone, clients,
- 2:09contractors, they already have this
- 2:11information available. So, think of it
- 2:13as a mini instruction manual. The
- 2:16clearer it is, the more detailed it is,
- 2:19the smoother fabrication and install
- 2:21installation process will be. So, in
- 2:24this drawing set, we're focusing on
- 2:26bedroom, kitchen, and wardrobe. And as
- 2:29you can see, there are different views
- 2:31of the middlework drawings. So right
- 2:34here, for example, we have a plan view
- 2:37that's kind of the bird's eye view that
- 2:40you can use as part of the floor plan.
- 2:42There is an elevation view. So this is a
- 2:45view looking straight up to the bed.
- 2:48There's also a detail view or um section
- 2:52view which is a little bit more detailed
- 2:56into how this bed frame is going to be
- 2:58constructed, how it's going to be hung,
- 3:00and what support is needed and how it's
- 3:04going to be built. So, same thing in
- 3:06this bedroom. You have the top view as a
- 3:10floor plan that kind of gives you a
- 3:12general idea. You have the elevation
- 3:15that has a little bit more detail of
- 3:17what the items are made from, how it's
- 3:20constructed, and then you have a section
- 3:24cut out in two different viewpoints that
- 3:27tells you how the um nightstand is going
- 3:31to be attached and how the headboard is
- 3:34going to be built as well. To help us be
- 3:36more specific, we like to use
- 3:38annotations like this that specify what
- 3:40it is, what materials they the items are
- 3:44made from, any kind of specific
- 3:46information that we want to highlight.
- 3:49So, everyone is aware and everyone is on
- 3:52the same page. And there are a couple of
- 3:54ways of how you can do that. One way is
- 3:56to add an arrow. So, we can add an arrow
- 3:59like this. Uh, so let's do it to the
- 4:02junction box for example. And if we want
- 4:06to keep it consistent in terms of style
- 4:08with this one, we select this arrow
- 4:10right here, then click pick style and
- 4:14then click on this one. So, as you can
- 4:16see, it matched it, but it did it in the
- 4:19opposite direction. So, to flip it,
- 4:23we're just going to click this button
- 4:24right here to flip horizontally. And
- 4:27right here, it it made it more
- 4:29consistent with how it looks like. Then
- 4:31you can add a text box right here
- 4:36and say that it's a junction box for
- 4:39example. And again, same thing. We
- 4:41select the text, pick style, and select
- 4:45this item right here to make it look
- 4:48exactly the same. So that's one way to
- 4:51do it. The other way to do it is to add
- 4:53a leader. So we'll do it for this LED
- 4:56style. So you could see you can do it
- 4:58like this.
- 5:02There you go. And we're going to write
- 5:04LED light. You can even add a hyperlink
- 5:08here if you want. And again, if you want
- 5:11to keep text consistent, you can just
- 5:13pick style and click here to make it
- 5:17look exactly the same. Okay. And of
- 5:19course, you can change and um edit the
- 5:23style of your arrows, edit the style of
- 5:26how you want this to look like. So if
- 5:28you want the text to be blue or red, you
- 5:32can do that as well.
- 5:35So any color you can keep it black. You
- 5:39can change the opacity too.
- 5:42And if you want to change the stroke,
- 5:45you can even add dash. And there are
- 5:47different options.
- 5:49So we can do dots for example. And if
- 5:52you don't like the 10 increments, we can
- 5:55change it to five or maybe even two.
- 6:01And the weight could be changed, too.
- 6:03So, we can make it a little bit bigger
- 6:05as well.
- 6:07So, lots of different options.
- 6:11I think I'll prefer this hidden line
- 6:13here, but I don't want it to be this
- 6:16black. So, I'm going to just switch the
- 6:18opacity to make it a little bit lighter
- 6:20and less visible.
- 6:23But the text I want to keep black. So,
- 6:28there it is. Perfect. And to make it
- 6:32even easier, you want to keep the
- 6:34graphics task consistent between the
- 6:37whole join set to make it more readable
- 6:40for people and um more uniform across
- 6:43the whole section. You can also build
- 6:46your own annotation and symbol style
- 6:49guide for your team, for example, or to
- 6:52include on the drawing so everyone knows
- 6:55what the expectations are. So again, you
- 6:57don't have to go back and forth and you
- 6:59know that all of those things are
- 7:01already specified and um you know what
- 7:04they would look like from project to
- 7:06project. In my opinion, professional
- 7:09milwork drawings doesn't have to be just
- 7:11technical. They can also be beautiful
- 7:13and visualizing it very well helps
- 7:16everyone especially clients that might
- 7:19not have the mindset and the ability to
- 7:22see how the project will come together.
- 7:24This helps a lot but it also is packed
- 7:27with different kinds of information and
- 7:29measurements and all kinds of things
- 7:31that are helpful to the fabricator to
- 7:33the contractor to the vendors of the
- 7:36appliances and all kinds of things. So
- 7:39for this instance, we added the tile
- 7:41backsplash at the back. And of course,
- 7:44you can change the color of the kitchen,
- 7:45the material, anything that you like. So
- 7:48you can just click here into edit style.
- 7:51And then in the fill section, you can
- 7:53select gradient effect, texture, hatch,
- 7:57or image. So I want to select an image,
- 8:00and I'm going to use this wooden texture
- 8:02right here. So there you go. This is how
- 8:05it has changed very quickly, very
- 8:08efficiently. And again, if you want to
- 8:10see a little bit more, you can
- 8:13definitely change the opacity.
- 8:16So, for example, we can use it as let's
- 8:19do 75%.
- 8:23So, it communicates the intent, but you
- 8:25can still see all of these jars, how
- 8:28everything is going to be constructed,
- 8:30how everything is going to be made. So
- 8:32it's very easy to understand. So there
- 8:35you go. And this is definitely an image
- 8:37that I would love to send to clients
- 8:39because it communicates the intent a lot
- 8:42a lot better and um to make sure that
- 8:45you're on the same page and they know
- 8:47what they're proven. They know how it's
- 8:49going to look like even without 3D
- 8:52renders or any kind of complicated
- 8:54collages. You can just use the same
- 8:56drawing in your client deliverables as
- 9:00well. So this is really nice feature.
- 9:03And of course all of the items that you
- 9:06see here in the drawing like the fridge,
- 9:08the dishwasher, faucet, oven, you don't
- 9:11need to draw them by hand. They're
- 9:13already saved in the library of rand
- 9:17design. So if you go right here under
- 9:19blocks and click on library,
- 9:22you can see all kinds of different
- 9:24options. And they are also organized by
- 9:27room, by different category.
- 9:31Or you can also search it up. Let's say
- 9:33if we want to see coffee machine and we
- 9:36want to add it to the drawing as well.
- 9:39Let's do this one for example. So you
- 9:41just drag it into the drawing. Can
- 9:43adjust the size and scale if you want.
- 9:47And another thing that I really like is
- 9:48that all of the items have different
- 9:50viewpoints. This is a top view for
- 9:53example, but you don't really see it
- 9:55here because it's going to be hidden by
- 9:56the upper cabinets. So, we want to make
- 10:00sure that it's visible here on this
- 10:02drawing. So, we go to the right side
- 10:04into the block instance. Click on this
- 10:08item here. And as you can see, there are
- 10:10different views of the same item. So,
- 10:13for example, we're going to change it to
- 10:15the front view.
- 10:18Going to make it slightly bigger. I'm
- 10:20going to place it right here on the
- 10:22contract. And there you go. So, it's
- 10:24very easy and very intuitive and uh
- 10:26saves you a ton of time as well. Another
- 10:29feature that I really like in rayon
- 10:31design is using especially for mill work
- 10:34is when you have millwork drawings like
- 10:37this that are kind of sliced. So, you
- 10:39could see the different wall materials,
- 10:41you can see an insulation, you can see
- 10:43the flooring, all kinds of things. and
- 10:46you don't want to make them different
- 10:48colors and create a legend so everything
- 10:50looks kind of out of place. It's just a
- 10:53whole mess. There is a hatch feature. So
- 10:56you can select this item right here for
- 10:58example and instead of color you can do
- 11:01either texture or hatch. So there are
- 11:03different types of patterns that you can
- 11:06use to communicate what kind of material
- 11:09this is without attracting too much
- 11:12attention to it. These are all kinds of
- 11:14different options and you can use them,
- 11:16you can modify them, you can change the
- 11:19stroke, you can change the color, add
- 11:21the background, whatever you want to do.
- 11:23So, it's very, very creative. And of
- 11:26course, if you have multiple blocks and
- 11:28you want to match their style, you don't
- 11:30have to do it manually every single
- 11:32time. You can just um kind of duplicate
- 11:35it into the same block. So, you just
- 11:37select the block that you want to
- 11:39update, pick the style that you like,
- 11:41and it's going to copy it right here. So
- 11:43it's going to look exactly the same. So
- 11:45as you can see, you can easily create
- 11:47all kinds of drawings in Rayon design
- 11:50and you can do it all in one program
- 11:52which is really great. You don't have to
- 11:54export the files. You can have don't
- 11:56have to upload them somewhere else. All
- 11:58of this is done in one place and that
- 12:00makes the process much much faster. When
- 12:02you work on large scale projects, you
- 12:04want all the documents to be very
- 12:07specific and organized. And the title
- 12:10page like this one helps you do exactly
- 12:13that. So you can add different kinds of
- 12:15information. For example, your company
- 12:18name, the project. For example, this one
- 12:20is a forest shelf nightstand. You can
- 12:23add project address, notes, scale, date,
- 12:27when it was edited, who it was edited
- 12:30by. if there are multiple people on your
- 12:32team. You can also add a section with
- 12:35revisions, what kind of revisions were
- 12:37made and when. So, all of this
- 12:40information really helps you keep track
- 12:42of all the updates and all of the
- 12:45information
- 12:46um during the project. So, I would
- 12:49definitely do that. And when you're
- 12:52creating milwork drawings, it's
- 12:53important to make sure that you include
- 12:55all kinds of different information from
- 12:57different viewpoints as well. So, as you
- 13:00can see here, we have a floor plan. So,
- 13:03just kind of a um view from the top side
- 13:06view that indicates how the headboard is
- 13:09going to be constructed, what's needed
- 13:11to be uh what's needed to make sure that
- 13:15we can actually build that. And we have
- 13:18a front view as well that gives you a
- 13:20little bit more information about the
- 13:22materials and how the items are
- 13:24positioned
- 13:26in the space.
- 13:29And same thing here. It's a different
- 13:31bedroom, but same type of idea. We have
- 13:34a floor plan. Um kind of the top view,
- 13:37the headboard elevation. So the side and
- 13:40front view here as well. And the
- 13:43headboard elevation. So the just the
- 13:45overview of all the dimensions of how
- 13:48everything comes together in the end.
- 13:51And of course to keep track of all of
- 13:53that, it's great to use the um
- 13:57and of course to keep track of that and
- 13:59make sure that everyone understands what
- 14:02you're trying to achieve here. It's
- 14:05great to have the titles. We just use
- 14:07this simple format and um keep them
- 14:10consistent throughout your drawing set
- 14:13to make just not to distract too much
- 14:16from the drawing set but to make sure
- 14:18that everything is anndated and
- 14:20everything is very clear and organized.
- 14:23So, another suggestion that I would love
- 14:25to share that helped me save so much
- 14:27time is to create a new model with all
- 14:30of your uh mill work elevations,
- 14:33everything that you worked with for in
- 14:36the past and that will be your kind of
- 14:39internal library. So, you can just
- 14:41reference that and you can adjust things
- 14:44as you go. It's much easier than
- 14:46starting every drawing from scratch. So,
- 14:49it saves you a lot of time. So right
- 14:51here for example I have the title sheet.
- 14:55So I just copy it as Xord and then we
- 14:59paste it right here.
- 15:02Okay. So as you can see it's much faster
- 15:04to do it this way and just edit this
- 15:07information in the properties and just
- 15:10change the project name, change the
- 15:13drawing name and um everything's going
- 15:16to be updated much easier. And of
- 15:19course, same idea for any kind of
- 15:21architectural details or legends for
- 15:24example as well. If you know that you're
- 15:27using the same type of materials or same
- 15:30type of construction, you can just
- 15:32select these items from here and copy
- 15:34and paste them into your working
- 15:36drawings for a new project. So that
- 15:38saves you a lot of time. It takes a
- 15:40little bit of time to build the library
- 15:42and the more projects you do, the easier
- 15:44it gets, but it's definitely worth doing
- 15:47that and investing time in doing that.
- 15:49You can make your process much much
- 15:51faster. If you have any questions or you
- 15:54need a little bit more guidance, you can
- 15:55now book a one-on-one demo with Rayon
- 15:58team in the description below. That
- 16:01wraps up my Milwork drawing secrets. I
- 16:03hope that this lesson gave you clarity
- 16:05and confidence and tools in order to
- 16:08create beautiful and detailed millwork
- 16:11drawing. With RAN, you can bring your
- 16:13millwork ideas to life and manage all of
- 16:16the stages in one place from concept to
- 16:19construction. Don't forget to download
- 16:21your free template below and try
- 16:23building your own blocks, annotation
- 16:25styles, and reference models. See you
- 16:28there.
