Institutional Failure and the Loss of Public Trust — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00A student spends years preparing for an
- 0:02exam, believing the process will be
- 0:03fair. A citizen crosses a bridge every
- 0:06morning believing someone
- 0:07>> [music]
- 0:07>> inspected it properly. A patient enters
- 0:10a hospital at their most vulnerable
- 0:12believing the system will protect them.
- 0:14Three different institutions, one common
- 0:16condition, trust. Not the kind you
- 0:18verify, the kind you extend simply to
- 0:21get through the day. And here's what
- 0:23makes it fragile. Institutions don't
- 0:25lose trust in a single moment, they lose
- 0:28it gradually through repeated failures,
- 0:31through warnings that were ignored,
- 0:32[music] through rules that were applied
- 0:34unequally until one day the exam paper
- 0:37leaks, the bridge collapses, the
- 0:39hospital fails someone who had no choice
- 0:42but to be there, [music] and something
- 0:43shifts. Not just anger at what happened,
- 0:46but something quieter and far more
- 0:48dangerous,
- 0:50cynicism.
- 0:51>> [music]
- 0:51>> The feeling that fairness was never
- 0:53really the point, the warnings don't get
- 0:55acted on, that the system protects
- 0:57itself before it protects you. That is
- 0:59when institutions lose more than public
- 1:01confidence, they lose [music]
- 1:03legitimacy.
