  1. 0:00I desensitize myself to it I I don't
  2. 0:09know I went to great lengths he is pure
  3. 0:11evil but you'd never know it by looking
  4. 0:13at him but when you hear him that's
  5. 0:15another story his killing field was
  6. 0:18Milwaukee and he got away with murder
  7. 0:19for more than a decade but how could any
  8. 0:22of this happen for the first time ever
  9. 0:23Nancy glass is here inside the world of
  10. 0:26Jeffrey Dahmer bill when I sat down
  11. 0:28opposite Jeffrey Dahmer for this
  12. 0:30interview I wondered what he would tell
  13. 0:32me how hard it would be to get him to
  14. 0:34discuss his horrific crimes what I found
  15. 0:37was that he was very forthcoming he
  16. 0:40volunteered details that may be
  17. 0:41difficult to hear I began by asking what
  18. 0:44he wanted from the men he picked up I
  19. 0:46had these obsessive desires and and
  20. 0:51thoughts wanting to control them to I
  21. 0:57don't know how to put it possess them
  22. 1:01permanently and that's why you killed
  23. 1:03them right right not because I was angry
  24. 1:06with them not because I hated them but
  25. 1:08because I wanted to keep them with me
  26. 1:11and as my obsession grew I was saving
  27. 1:20body parts such as skulls and skeletons
  28. 1:24Jeffrey Dahmer is recalling his
  29. 1:27monstrous past almost two years ago in
  30. 1:30this little apartment in Milwaukee
  31. 1:32police discovered the grisly remnants of
  32. 1:35one of the most horrible crime sprees in
  33. 1:37American history Jeffrey Dahmer an
  34. 1:40unassuming chocolate factory worker
  35. 1:42would eventually confess that he had
  36. 1:44seduced murdered and dismembered 17
  37. 1:47young men he even ate some of his
  38. 1:50victims body parts Pete instantly became
  39. 1:54the center of worldwide media attention
  40. 1:56a serial killer unmasked
  41. 2:00there were protests and press
  42. 2:02conferences in Milwaukee as people try
  43. 2:04to understand how this could have
  44. 2:06happened in their midst
  45. 2:08how did Jeffrey Dahmer get away with
  46. 2:10murder after murder for 13 years how did
  47. 2:14a boy born into a hard-working
  48. 2:16middle-class family turn into the worst
  49. 2:19kind of monster imaginable in this
  50. 2:22exclusive interview we put those
  51. 2:24questions to Jeffrey Dahmer himself we
  52. 2:27met with him at the maximum-security
  53. 2:28prison where he is serving his sentence
  54. 2:30of 999 years for the first time he talks
  55. 2:35about his crimes and gives us a chilling
  56. 2:38look inside the mind of a serial killer
  57. 2:41it's a process that doesn't happen
  58. 2:44overnight when you d personalize another
  59. 2:49person and view them as just an object
  60. 2:53an object for pleasure instead of a
  61. 2:55living breathing human being it it seems
  62. 3:03to make it easier to do things you
  63. 3:08shouldn't do the reason why Jeffrey
  64. 3:10Dahmer was able to get away with his
  65. 3:12crimes was because of just what you are
  66. 3:14seeing here Jeffrey Dahmer is
  67. 3:17intelligent and articulate that is what
  68. 3:19makes him so frightening but if you
  69. 3:21listen carefully to his words throughout
  70. 3:24this interview you realize it is a thin
  71. 3:27disguise you do sound though like the
  72. 3:30kind of person who could have said to
  73. 3:31himself this is wrong
  74. 3:33i'ma stop I always knew though that it
  75. 3:38was wrong but after the the first the
  76. 3:45first killing was not planned I was
  77. 3:50coming back from the shopping mall back
  78. 3:52in 78 I had had fantasies about picking
  79. 3:57up a hitchhiker and taking him back to
  80. 4:01the house and having complete control
  81. 4:04and dominance over him
  82. 4:07the hitchhikers name was Steven Hicks he
  83. 4:10was just 18 Jeffrey
  84. 4:12took him to his parents house there he
  85. 4:15strangled him with a barbell he
  86. 4:17dismembered the body and hid it in a
  87. 4:19drainpipe
  88. 4:20it was Jeffrey Dahmer who gave those
  89. 4:22details to the police in his confession
  90. 4:25no one no one had a clue as to what was
  91. 4:28happening for for over a decade during
  92. 4:31that time Jeffrey Dahmer joined the Army
  93. 4:34and was sent to Germany he was
  94. 4:35eventually discharged for a drinking
  95. 4:37problem and returned to Ohio nine years
  96. 4:41after Stephen Hicks murder the killing
  97. 4:43began again what happened to you in the
  98. 4:46nine years in between that you were able
  99. 4:48to stop that you were able to control
  100. 4:51yourself
  101. 4:52just wasn't an opportunity to fully
  102. 4:56express what I wanted to do to do there
  103. 4:59was just not that the physical
  104. 5:00opportunity to do it then and I started
  105. 5:04when I moved to Milwaukee in 81 I
  106. 5:10started reading pornography going to the
  107. 5:13bookstores eventually that led to
  108. 5:21frequenting the gay bars and then I one
  109. 5:26time I brought this young man back to
  110. 5:29the hotel room the Ambassador Hotel was
  111. 5:33just planning on drugging him and
  112. 5:35spending the night with him I had no
  113. 5:38intention of hurting him
  114. 5:39when I woke up in the morning he had a
  115. 5:42broken rib here I was heavily bruised
  116. 5:45apparently I had beaten him to death
  117. 5:48with my fists and you have no memory no
  118. 5:51memory of it but that's what started the
  119. 5:53whole spree all over again
  120. 5:55Dahmer says he snuck the corpse of his
  121. 5:58victim Stephen to me out of his hotel
  122. 6:00room in a suitcase then he took it to
  123. 6:02his grandmother's house where he cut up
  124. 6:05the body and put it in plastic garbage
  125. 6:07bags when do you kill these men
  126. 6:10afterwards or you repulsed we upset know
  127. 6:14it at the time it was it was almost
  128. 6:19addictive it was almost
  129. 6:23a surge of energy I wouldn't have to
  130. 6:29worry about any of their needs or
  131. 6:34anything I just had complete control of
  132. 6:35the situation but Jeffrey Dahmer was out
  133. 6:38of control the urge to kill had
  134. 6:40overpowered him as police later learned
  135. 6:42he wasn't satisfied with his victims
  136. 6:44death he wanted more
  137. 6:46why did you photograph them it was my
  138. 6:50way of remembering their appearance
  139. 6:54their physical beauty I also wanted to
  140. 7:00keep something if I couldn't keep them
  141. 7:04there with me whole I at least I felt
  142. 7:07that I could keep their skeletons and I
  143. 7:12even went so far as planning on setting
  144. 7:16up an altar with the ten different
  145. 7:20skulls and skeletons and what was the
  146. 7:22purpose of the altar going to be uh as a
  147. 7:26sort of Memorial point where I could I
  148. 7:34don't know it's it's it's so bizarre and
  149. 7:38strange it's hard to describe a place
  150. 7:40where I could collect my thoughts and
  151. 7:44feed my obsession when the bodies were
  152. 7:47still in your apartment there was no
  153. 7:51time when you would see them and say
  154. 7:54this is grotesque what have I done
  155. 7:58there were times there were times but
  156. 8:01the compulsive obsession with doing what
  157. 8:06I was doing overpowered any feelings of
  158. 8:09revulsion this man with a quiet almost
  159. 8:11shy demeanor became a master manipulator
  160. 8:14who was able to lure strangers he met at
  161. 8:17gay bars to his apartment he was even
  162. 8:19able to con the police into returning a
  163. 8:2114 year old boy to him after neighbors
  164. 8:24called 911 that the child was in the
  165. 8:27street naked and bleeding
  166. 8:29Dahmer convinced the police that he and
  167. 8:31the boy were simply having a lover's
  168. 8:33quarrel
  169. 8:35executed boyfriend of another boyfriend
  170. 8:41wasn't a childhood open after the police
  171. 8:44left Jeffrey Dahmer murdered that boy
  172. 8:46Connor axe into some phone this man says
  173. 8:50he had a near fatal encounter with
  174. 8:52Jeffrey Dahmer he wanted to take some
  175. 8:54picture of my back he hit me with a
  176. 8:56Robert hammer on my neck he was lucky to
  177. 9:00escape because by then the killing had
  178. 9:02become almost routine before you went
  179. 9:05out to pick up a man was there any kind
  180. 9:08of ritual you went through I go to the
  181. 9:11nightclubs drink watch the strip TV
  182. 9:16shows and if I didn't meet anyone at the
  183. 9:20bars I'd go to the bath clubs and meets
  184. 9:25meet someone there offer them money and
  185. 9:28we'd go back to the apartment
  186. 9:32have a few drinks I'd have the sleeping
  187. 9:38pill mixture already prepared person
  188. 9:41would drink it to fall asleep and that's
  189. 9:46when they would be strangled watching
  190. 9:49the movie Exorcist 3 was also part of
  191. 9:52his ritual it put him in the mood for
  192. 9:54murder
  193. 9:55I felt so hopelessly evil and perverted
  194. 9:59that that I actually derives a sort of
  195. 10:07pleasure from watching that tape did you
  196. 10:10like feeling evil no no I didn't but I
  197. 10:15tried to overcome the thoughts and it
  198. 10:19worked for a while but eventually I gave
  199. 10:22in while Jeffrey Dahmer may say things
  200. 10:25today that make it seem like he
  201. 10:27understands what went on in his mind he
  202. 10:30does not all he can do is tell you what
  203. 10:33happened but he cannot stop whatever it
  204. 10:35is that drove him to kill in the first
  205. 10:38place do you still feel those same urges
  206. 10:42do you still feel that compulsion that
  207. 10:44obsession I wish I could say that
  208. 10:47it just left completely but no there are
  209. 10:51times when I still do still do have the
  210. 10:55old compulsions Jeffrey Dahmer says as
  211. 10:57time went on his mind became more and
  212. 11:00more warped and yet he was clever enough
  213. 11:02to continue to elude police and lure
  214. 11:04young men to his apartment we should
  215. 11:07warn you the details are very graphic I
  216. 11:10started having these obsessive thoughts
  217. 11:12when I was about 15 and 16 and they got
  218. 11:17worse and worse
  219. 11:18what will your fantasies about they were
  220. 11:22sexual fantasies of control power
  221. 11:25complete dominance they became reality
  222. 11:29was it pleasure in that fantasy there
  223. 11:32was excitement fear pleasure all mixed
  224. 11:36together Jeffrey Dahmer fulfilled his
  225. 11:39fantasies by murdering and dismembering
  226. 11:4117 young men in time his desires became
  227. 11:45more extreme his deeds more grotesque
  228. 11:48listen to him talk about the most
  229. 11:50unnatural things in the most
  230. 11:52matter-of-fact of ways that's when you
  231. 11:55realize that none of it has touched him
  232. 11:57I was branching out that's when the
  233. 12:00cannibalism started eating of the heart
  234. 12:03and the arm muscle it was a way of
  235. 12:08making me feel that they were a part of
  236. 12:13me at first it was just curiosity and
  237. 12:17then it became compulsive then I tried
  238. 12:20to keep the person alive by inducing a
  239. 12:26zombie-like state by injecting first
  240. 12:36dilute acid solution into their brain or
  241. 12:40hot water and it never did to completely
  242. 12:45work could someone like you be stopped
  243. 12:47could you be helped no I was I was dead
  244. 12:53set on going with this compulsion it was
  245. 12:56the only thing that gave me any
  246. 13:00any satisfaction he became so warped by
  247. 13:04his evil impulses that he even took a
  248. 13:07victim's head with him to work at the
  249. 13:09ambrosia Chocolate Factory
  250. 13:10I kept the mummified head and skull of
  251. 13:17one of the victims in a carrying case in
  252. 13:21my locker at work were you almost
  253. 13:23flaunting it yes but that's how strong
  254. 13:26the compulsion was that so bizarre the
  255. 13:29the desire was I wanted to keep
  256. 13:31something of the person with me Jeffrey
  257. 13:35Dahmer exhibited some disturbing
  258. 13:37behavior early on he began drinking
  259. 13:39heavily as a teenager
  260. 13:41dropped out of college was arrested for
  261. 13:43indecent exposure disorderly conduct and
  262. 13:46fondling a thirteen-year-old boy
  263. 13:48tragically one of his murder victims
  264. 13:51would be that boy's brother do you know
  265. 13:53what started it is there any kind of
  266. 13:55incident that you can remember to this
  267. 13:57day I don't know what started it and the
  268. 14:00person to blame is sitting right across
  269. 14:02from you that's the only person not
  270. 14:05parents not society not pornography I
  271. 14:08mean those are just excuses his
  272. 14:11MacArthur teen year crime spree finally
  273. 14:14ended when this man Tracy Edwards
  274. 14:16brought the police to the infamous
  275. 14:18apartment like the others he had gone
  276. 14:20there with the promise of money he was
  277. 14:22listening to my heart because at a point
  278. 14:24he told me he was gonna eat my heart at
  279. 14:26that point I hit him and I ran what was
  280. 14:29the turning point for you that made you
  281. 14:31suddenly realize that you had done
  282. 14:33something terribly wrong something you
  283. 14:35should be sorry for it was the night of
  284. 14:38the arrest they have no memory of what
  285. 14:41happened during the six hours before the
  286. 14:47last victim ran out of the apartment
  287. 14:48they heard a knock on the door and the
  288. 14:51police were there with with the last
  289. 14:55victim they asked me where the key was
  290. 15:00to the handcuffs I was my mind was in a
  291. 15:05haze I sort of pointed to the bedroom
  292. 15:07and that's where they found the pictures
  293. 15:10they yelled cuff em I was a handcuffed
  294. 15:14and it was just the realization that
  295. 15:19there was no point in trying to hide
  296. 15:22hide my actions anymore
  297. 15:25the best route was to help help the
  298. 15:29police identify all the victims and just
  299. 15:33make a complete confession when it was
  300. 15:35revealed that most of the victims were
  301. 15:37black or homosexual people in Milwaukee
  302. 15:40were incensed many felt that was why he
  303. 15:43went after them and why the police
  304. 15:45didn't seem to care when their families
  305. 15:47reported them missing Tim of year 17
  306. 15:50victims were black were they racially
  307. 15:53motivated what was not a sexual
  308. 15:57preference it was just to find an
  309. 16:00obsession with the best looking young
  310. 16:04man I could find well you just heard him
  311. 16:06say that his sexual preference had
  312. 16:08nothing to do with the killings he has
  313. 16:10not come to terms with his homosexuality
  314. 16:12never understood it
  315. 16:14there was no use trying to fight it
  316. 16:16because I couldn't rid myself of it it
  317. 16:18was it was too powerful and persistent
  318. 16:21do you dislike it
  319. 16:22yes it's caused a lot of problems for me
  320. 16:27a lot of conflicts and unanswered
  321. 16:30questions the conflicts remain with him
  322. 16:33and so do his compulsions but in prison
  323. 16:36he finally cannot act on his savage
  324. 16:38desires if you were out on the street
  325. 16:41now would you still be committing the
  326. 16:43crimes probably if this hadn't happened
  327. 16:46there's no doubt I probably would be I
  328. 16:48can't think of anything that would have
  329. 16:50stopped me
  330. 16:53you
  331. 16:56[Music]
  332. 17:04you
