Inside The $8,000,000,000 Mega Yachts — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Mega yachts are quite common amongst the
- 0:02rich and alongside jets and mansions,
- 0:04they are one of the biggest signifiers
- 0:06of their status to the rest of the
- 0:07world. Mega yachts are luxurious vessels
- 0:10with a professional crew with dimensions
- 0:12ranging from 79 ft up to 500 ft in
- 0:15length. There are a lot of expensive
- 0:17yachts out there and we're going to be
- 0:18looking at the top five. But even as we
- 0:20speak now more than ever before, the
- 0:22ultra rich are spending a lot on the
- 0:24construction of more of these luxury
- 0:26vessels. Sam Tucker is the head of super
- 0:28yacht research at Vessels Value, a
- 0:30leading vessel valuation company. When
- 0:32asked, he had a few things to say about
- 0:34the mega yacht market from 2020. The
- 0:36market's been roaring. Demand for
- 0:38extravagantly high-end yachts has
- 0:40outstripped supply, and it's impossible
- 0:42to get a slot in a new buildard. They're
- 0:44totally booked. In other words, 2020 was
- 0:47a great year to be rich or to be a mega
- 0:49yacht manufacturer. Any rich person who
- 0:50owns a yacht would want for the ride to
- 0:52be just the way they pronounce yacht
- 0:54with the C silent. [music] And this is
- 0:56something they take into their own hands
- 0:57with the exotic features and designs
- 0:59they implement on these seafaring
- 1:01vessels. So in this video, we'll be
- 1:03looking at the five people who have
- 1:04splurged the most cash on their journey
- 1:06across the seven seas. But first,
- 1:08welcome back to our channel. Before we
- 1:10dive in, make sure you subscribe and hit
- 1:12the bell icon so you never miss a video
- 1:14from us. Number five, Dubai, [music]
- 1:17$400 million. In 1995, Blowman Voss in
- 1:22collaboration with Lerson began the
- 1:24project of building this ship for the
- 1:25Bulkaya of Brunai, Prince Jeffrey.
- 1:28However, he didn't go through with the
- 1:29construction so that by 2001, Shik
- 1:32Muhammad bin Rashid al-Maktum, the ruler
- 1:34of the Emirate of Dubai, would have
- 1:36taken over and completed the project.
- 1:38This was the largest yacht from 2006 to
- 1:402009 with a length of 530 ft and a beam
- 1:44of 72 ft. It has since been replaced as
- 1:46the biggest boy on the seven seas by the
- 1:48Eclipse and the AAM in that order.
- 1:50However, it still boasts some of the
- 1:52greatest luxuries that one can
- 1:54experience within its eight decks that
- 1:56can provide space for 88 crew [music]
- 1:58members and 115 guests. Guests are privy
- 2:00to a 10 m swimming pool, a squash court,
- 2:03a cinema, 20 water bikes, a disco, a
- 2:06lobster tank, and a pristine dining room
- 2:08that seats up to 90 guests. The ship
- 2:11also has a helipad and two long
- 2:13motorboats. And the four MTU 20V diesel
- 2:16engines will yeet all this luxury across
- 2:18the open seas at a speed of 26 knots and
- 2:21a distance of up to 8,500 nautical miles
- 2:24at a go. Number four, my plus $527
- 2:29million. When it comes to mega yachts,
- 2:31the Emirati are the leading customers in
- 2:34the market. They own at least half of
- 2:35the most expensive super yachts in the
- 2:37world. And the A+ at $527 million is one
- 2:41of them. It is owned by Mansor bin Zed
- 2:43al- Nan, the owner of the top English
- 2:45soccer club Manchester City. He's worth
- 2:48$22 billion. He's the deputy prime
- 2:50minister of the United Arab Emirates and
- 2:52a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.
- 2:54The A+ is 482 ft long and has a beam
- 2:58standing at 70 ft. However, the vessel
- 3:00is still able to move its massive weight
- 3:02across the ocean at a service speed of
- 3:0422.9 knots and a maximum speed over 25
- 3:07knots. This speed comes from the twin
- 3:09peel stick engines that generate 7,990
- 3:13horsepowers each. A+, formerly called
- 3:16Topaz, is currently the ninth largest
- 3:18yacht in the world. Despite being
- 3:20launched in 2012, it has eight decks
- 3:22with a swimming platform and a swimming
- 3:24pool, double helicopter landing pads, a
- 3:26jacuzzi, a fitness hall, a conference
- 3:28room, cinema, tender garage, and
- 3:31underwater lights. The rooms are large
- 3:33and clad in luxury designs and the crew
- 3:35and staff take care of Shake Mansour and
- 3:37any guest with the best culinary and
- 3:39hospitality treatments. Number three,
- 3:42Azam $65 million. This Maggiat is owned
- 3:46by Shik Khalifa bin Zed al- Nahan. H bin
- 3:50Zed al- Nahan. Sound familiar? That's
- 3:53right. Shik Khalifa is the half-brother
- 3:54of Shik Mansour and is the head of the
- 3:56ruling family of the UAE. Shake Khalifa
- 3:59is also the chairman of the Abu Dhabi
- 4:01Investment Authority, which controls
- 4:03assets worth almost $900 billion, the
- 4:07most managed by any ruler anywhere in
- 4:09the world. But I digress. The Alnahan is
- 4:12surely an interesting family. And maybe
- 4:14you can let us know in the comments if
- 4:15you'd like to see a video about them.
- 4:17So, when you consider all this wealth
- 4:19and status, having the largest private
- 4:21super yacht in the world at a price of
- 4:23$65 million at an annual cost of $60
- 4:26million will not seem like such a big
- 4:28deal anymore. The yacht was built and
- 4:30released by German shipyard Lerson
- 4:32Yachts in 2013. And it has a length of
- 4:35590 ft, a salon at 95 ft, and a beam of
- 4:3859 ft. And yet, despite its huge size,
- 4:41the two gas turbines and diesel engines
- 4:43generate up to 47,000 horsepower, enough
- 4:46to move the behemoth at a top speed of
- 4:4832 knots. And while the vessel darts
- 4:51through the open seas at high speed,
- 4:53it's 60 crew members and 35 passengers
- 4:55take it slow and soak in the beauty of
- 4:57the Earth, the water, which is probably
- 4:59what the fishes call the planet.
- 5:00However, unlike our planet, the AAM is
- 5:03properly named and the name of the yacht
- 5:05being an Arabic word that translates to
- 5:06resolute in English. The four ship is
- 5:09about 50 meters in length and has a
- 5:10helellipad on it. Inside the
- 5:12multi-decked yacht, there are about 50
- 5:14guest rooms, a master suite, and several
- 5:16other immaculate amenities meant for
- 5:18royalty. The interior design was done by
- 5:20Kristoff Leone of Naughty Yachts.
- 5:22Perhaps the most remarkable thing about
- 5:24this yacht is that it took Len and Leone
- 5:26just 3 years to build this wonder. At
- 5:28almost 600 ft, the ship is 57 ft longer
- 5:32than the next yacht on our list. Number
- 5:34two, Eclipse, $1.5 billion. Blow and
- 5:38Voss are a subsidiary of Lerson, which
- 5:40is probably the top ship building
- 5:42company in the world. In its beginnings,
- 5:44Blow and Voss specialized in building
- 5:46military vessels, with the Bismar vessel
- 5:48being its most iconic. They launched the
- 5:50Eclipse in 2010, 6 years before being
- 5:52acquired by Lerson and stands at 533 ft.
- 5:56It was the longest yacht until the Azam
- 5:58came along in 2013, and today it remains
- 6:00the fourth longest super yacht. The
- 6:02Eclipse has two powerful diesel engines
- 6:05that propel the yacht at 22 knots with
- 6:07almost 40,000 horsepower. And staying
- 6:09true to their military history, Blow and
- 6:11Voss have attached a missile detection
- 6:13system and a submarine that will
- 6:15submerge as low as 50 m into the water.
- 6:18However, defending against military
- 6:19attacks is not all there is to this
- 6:21yacht. Because what form of attack is
- 6:23more insidious than the piercing camera
- 6:25lens of the paparazzi? That's right. The
- 6:27ship comes installed with an
- 6:29anti-poparazzi system that stops digital
- 6:31cameras from taking a shot. What the
- 6:33system does is make use of a laser
- 6:35shield that beams infrared light to
- 6:37detect a digital camera and focus bright
- 6:39light on it to render any photo useless.
- 6:42Basically, a high budget high-tech
- 6:44version of the police shining a torch in
- 6:46your eyes and then proceeding to slap
- 6:47you in the face. Eclipse has 24 guest
- 6:50cabins, two large pools, many hot tubs,
- 6:52a disco hall, and two helipads. The
- 6:55vessel is owned by Russian Israeli
- 6:57billionaire businessman Raman
- 6:58Abramovich. He's also the owner of the
- 7:01English soccer team and current
- 7:02champions of Europe, Chelsea Football
- 7:04Club. And when he and Shake Mansour are
- 7:06done playing in the seven seas, they go
- 7:08headto-head in the English Premier
- 7:09League and other European competitions.
- 7:11He and Shake Mansour splurge a lot of
- 7:13money on their clubs, sometimes too
- 7:15much, that the authorities have to slap
- 7:17them with a fine, but is nothing Mr.
- 7:19Abramovich can't deal with as his
- 7:20Eclipse super yacht which is currently
- 7:22worth $1.5 billion is only a fraction of
- 7:25his $18 billion wealth. Number one
- 7:28history supreme $4.8 billion. This
- 7:33vessel is the smallest on our list. It's
- 7:35not remarkably fast and it has the least
- 7:37amount of utilities but is the only one
- 7:39covered in gold, platinum, and other
- 7:41luxurious metals. It is said to have
- 7:43been designed by Liverpool luxury
- 7:45designer Stuart Hughes in 2011. When
- 7:47Hughes announced the project, he didn't
- 7:49expressly state who the owner was, but
- 7:51gave hints to suggest it was Malaysian
- 7:53billionaire Robert Qu. He is one of only
- 7:55three Malaysians with a net worth of
- 7:57over 5 billion, with the other two
- 7:59having a net worth of 5 billion and
- 8:00Quoke having just over 10 billion. That
- 8:03makes him the clear culprit since the
- 8:05ship costs the same as the net worth of
- 8:06the other two billionaires. The yacht
- 8:08has a luxurious master suite with a wall
- 8:11made from meteoric stone with a
- 8:13sculpture made from real T-Rex dinosaur
- 8:15bone sourced from Arizona and said to be
- 8:17worth $89,000.
- 8:19You know the way people hang sculptures
- 8:21of dead animals in their house only
- 8:23richer this time. Now these yachts are
- 8:24all very expensive and you wonder what
- 8:26good could come from this level of
- 8:28vanity. Well, let's hear from Peter
- 8:30Lerson, the CEO of Lerson and kind of
- 8:32like the highest authority when it comes
- 8:34to yachts as we've seen in this video.
- 8:36He says that on the building of a ZAM
- 8:38about 6 million hours of manpower was
- 8:40used and this translates to employment
- 8:42for over 4,000 families and that's not
- 8:45counting the number of jobs being
- 8:46created while maintaining these vessels.
- 8:48So you begin to realize that the
- 8:50luxurious lifestyles of the wealthy
- 8:52actually fund the lives of regular
- 8:54people. But what do you think of the
- 8:55five most expensive super yachts in the
- 8:58world? Which one was your favorite? If
- 8:59you had $10 billion, would you buy a
- 9:02yacht? If not a yacht, what would you
- 9:03rather buy? Let us know in the comments
- 9:05below. And if you enjoyed this video,
- 9:07make sure to leave us a like.
