- 0:00In the moments that followed Arsenal's
- 0:01Champions League final [music] defeat
- 0:03against Paris Saint-Germain, Mikel
- 0:05Arteta laid out his manifesto for the
- 0:07summer.
- 0:07>> [music]
- 0:08>> "We want to reach another level," the
- 0:10Arsenal manager said. "We're going to
- 0:11have to show that ambition, because
- 0:13we're more than capable of doing it, but
- 0:15it's going to demand us to be very, very
- 0:16ambitious, very [music] fast, and very
- 0:18smart." So, did Arsenal answer Arteta's
- 0:22call [music]
- 0:22for ambition? Well, what follows is the
- 0:25inside story of the club's 2026 summer
- 0:28transfer [music] window. Welcome to Tifo
- 0:30Football by The Athletic.
- 0:33Arsenal undoubtedly strengthened in the
- 0:35summer of 2026. The club have made four
- 0:37first-team signings, or five if you
- 0:39count the addition of Piero Hincapié,
- 0:42whose loan deal was made permanent for
- 0:43around 34 million pounds. But Arsenal
- 0:46entered the summer hoping to do more
- 0:48than simply refine. Having become
- 0:50champions of England and reaching the
- 0:52Champions League final, there was a
- 0:53feeling inside and outside the club that
- 0:56this was the opportunity to make a
- 0:57transformative addition to their attack.
- 1:00Across the summer, there were
- 1:01high-profile pursuits of Morgan Rogers,
- 1:03Vinícius Júnior, and Julián Álvarez,
- 1:06none of which came to fruition. Although
- 1:08those names reflected the level at which
- 1:10Arsenal initially hoped to operate.
- 1:12At the outset, Rogers was framed as
- 1:14Arsenal's key target this summer.
- 1:16Arsenal's England contingent launched a
- 1:18charm offensive, and Arteta pitched
- 1:20Rogers his plan to use him [music] from
- 1:22the left. When it came to the price,
- 1:25Arsenal had a clear valuation, initially
- 1:27set at 80 million pounds, and felt in
- 1:29the early stages of talks that an
- 1:31agreement could be reached at that fee,
- 1:33or perhaps slightly higher. But when
- 1:35Manchester City agreed to pay 116
- 1:38million pounds for Elia Anderson, the
- 1:40paradigm shifted. Villa's expectations
- 1:42were raised, and the deal moved beyond
- 1:44the point where Arsenal were
- 1:46comfortable. Arsenal examined their
- 1:48options, including the ambitious bid for
- 1:50Vinícius Júnior. As time passed, Rogers
- 1:53began to doubt Arsenal's commitment to
- 1:54signing him. The uncertainty created an
- 1:57opportunity for Chelsea, who moved
- 1:59swiftly to agree a 117 million pound
- 2:02fee. Arsenal were offered the chance to
- 2:04match it, but declined.
- 2:06Similarly, Arsenal were admirers of
- 2:08France international Bradley Barcola, a
- 2:10more obvious natural fit for the left
- 2:12wing, but they were put off by PSG's
- 2:14lofty asking price.
- 2:16At a summit at Arsenal's Spanish
- 2:18training base, the Arsenal leadership
- 2:20decided to move for Vinícius Júnior. The
- 2:22pursuit of the player was approved at
- 2:24the owner level, and there was
- 2:25considerable optimism around the deal.
- 2:27Talks with Arteta were positive. Arsenal
- 2:30put together a financial package that
- 2:31was substantially better than Real
- 2:33Madrid's initial offer, and throughout
- 2:35the negotiations, they believed that
- 2:37Vinícius Júnior was serious about the
- 2:38possibility of moving to England.
- 2:41Sources familiar with the player were a
- 2:43little more dubious, though. They
- 2:45pointed out that the lifestyle Vinícius
- 2:47Júnior enjoys at Madrid would be
- 2:49difficult to replicate in London. They
- 2:51felt Vinícius Júnior's heart was in
- 2:52Spain, and if Madrid showed willingness
- 2:55to raise their offer, his mind would be
- 2:57made up. Others doubted Arsenal's
- 2:59financial capacity to pull the deal off.
- 3:01>> [music]
- 3:01>> The club's sporting director, Andrea
- 3:03Berta, told industry sources that the
- 3:05sheer scale of Vinícius Júnior's salary
- 3:07package meant Arsenal would struggle to
- 3:09pay more than a 50 million euro fee.
- 3:12Arsenal also discussed the possibility
- 3:14of signing Vinícius Júnior as a free
- 3:16agent in [music] 2027 if he allowed his
- 3:19Real Madrid contract to run down.
- 3:21Ultimately, the player decided to extend
- 3:23his contract in Madrid.
- 3:25Julián Álvarez, meanwhile, had been a
- 3:27long-term target for Arsenal. With the
- 3:29club seeking a number nine in the summer
- 3:31of 2025, he was discussed briefly
- 3:34alongside names such as Alexander Isak,
- 3:37Benjamin Šeško, and Viktor Gyökeres, who
- 3:39eventually joined from Sporting. At the
- 3:41time, Berta, who had previously worked
- 3:44as sporting director at Atlético Madrid,
- 3:46impressed upon his Arsenal colleagues
- 3:48that extracting Álvarez at that stage
- 3:51would be impossible. This summer though,
- 3:53Arsenal felt differently. They met with
- 3:55Atletico officials on August the 20th to
- 3:58indicate their willingness to buy the
- 3:59player. Atletico were receptive, but
- 4:02Alvarez was unmoved by the prospect of a
- 4:04move to London. Compelling financial
- 4:06offers were floated, but Alvarez was
- 4:09intransigent. He was resistant to the
- 4:11idea of returning to England, citing
- 4:13concerns over family and lifestyle. He
- 4:16was determined to join Barcelona, and
- 4:18failing that, he too would stay in
- 4:20Madrid.
- 4:20>> [music]
- 4:21>> Now, in the dying days of the market,
- 4:22Arsenal were offered several attackers,
- 4:24including Malick Fofana of Lyon. Berta
- 4:27is a long-standing admirer of the
- 4:2921-year-old winger, and Arsenal explored
- 4:31a potential deal. Fofana spoke with
- 4:33Arteta, and Arsenal engaged with Lyon.
- 4:36The French club hoped to earn around 30
- 4:38million pounds for Fofana to boost their
- 4:40finances, having failed to qualify for
- 4:42the Champions League. Arsenal, however,
- 4:44were only prepared to offer a [music]
- 4:46loan. Sources close to the negotiations,
- 4:49speaking to the Athletic, said that
- 4:50Arsenal could not propose a permanent
- 4:52deal for Fofana, as they're in danger of
- 4:54encroaching on UEFA spending limits.
- 4:56Arsenal refute [music] this though.
- 4:58For the right player, perhaps Arsenal
- 5:00would have been prepared to risk a
- 5:01breach. Arteta, however, had concerns
- 5:04over Fofana's ability to handle the
- 5:05physicality of the Premier League. With
- 5:08opinion divided on the deal, Arsenal
- 5:10chose not to proceed.
- 5:11And ultimately, the club feels satisfied
- 5:13with their window. In Ezri Konsa and
- 5:15Bruno Guimarães, they've added Premier
- 5:17League proven quality, while Khristos
- 5:19Solis has made a promising start.
- 5:21Through the departures of Gabriel
- 5:23Martinelli, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel
- 5:25Jesus, among others, they've also
- 5:27delivered the revenue they needed,
- 5:29whether to comply with UEFA regulations,
- 5:31or as Arsenal insist, simply to balance
- 5:34the books and the squad. [music]
- 5:36But in attack, there are still
- 5:37questions. The trio of Martinelli,
- 5:40Trossard, and Jesus made a combined 130
- 5:42appearances in 2025-26,
- 5:46while Ethan Nwaneri has also been
- 5:48allowed to join Borussia Dortmund on
- 5:50loan. On paper, the front line appears
- 5:52weaker than last season.
- 5:55Having missed out on many of the big
- 5:56names they chased, they leave the window
- 5:58with a reinforced squad, but also with
- 6:01the sense that a rare opportunity was
- 6:03not fully grasped.
