- 0:45I turned out I turned out pretty good
- 0:49I'm looking in the background Tim Duncan
- 0:52were you out Tim Duncan tune junk and
- 0:55calling tenanken
- 0:57are you moved on us Tim Duncan who wrote
- 1:01my book he's in the audience he is a
- 1:02local Eastern Shore man
- 1:04they want us to sign some after you get
- 1:07out so you you can't go nowhere
- 1:10I'd like to tell you all that I don't
- 1:13smoke anymore
- 1:16I
- 1:18haven't smoked in two years this
- 1:21December so I'm pretty proud of that and
- 1:23watching this film 100 times made me
- 1:25quit but I want to thank you all for
- 1:29coming out and you
- 1:32know it seems like a lot of people talk
- 1:36about the Eastern Shore and men and
- 1:38women from where we live and where we
- 1:40come from but it's some of the best
- 1:42bunch that I ever knew in my life
- 1:46I've got some of my family down here Jay
- 1:49and Justin and Jason and it's 3 j's
- 1:54there it's a but my two nephews and
- 1:59their father and several other my dad is
- 2:02in the audience he was 88 years old
- 2:04where you at pops Darius right here
- 2:08he's at handsome and it was the next to
- 2:11me in that picture i I really don't
- 2:15think the movie says it all I finally
- 2:18after you know our book has been out for
- 2:20ten years and and finally I had to last
- 2:24because you know I've been public
- 2:25speaking now for 23 years and I
- 2:30you know but you know what to say about
- 2:32Eastern Shore people man we can always
- 2:34tell a good story so I just wish it
- 2:37wouldn't what it was it turned out to be
- 2:40now I I have to tell you that it's out
- 2:44on DVD and you can buy at Walmart Target
- 2:47or any of those places to go online and
- 2:49get it and we want to tell everybody
- 2:52about the film it's been out a year now
- 2:54and
- 2:56you know it took us four years to make
- 2:58and
- 3:00Gregory bein I think did an excellent
- 3:03job pretty house and even the governor
- 3:05let me go to the old prison and film out
- 3:08there before they tore it down
- 3:11you know I've been doing this a long
- 3:14time and
- 3:15the reason why I ended to help end the
- 3:18death penalty in this day was because I
- 3:20look out over this audience and if it
- 3:22can happen to an honorably discharged
- 3:24marine it could happen to anybody here
- 3:26and whether you agree with the death
- 3:28penalty or not is immaterial to me I
- 3:30don't want you to have to go through
- 3:31what I did
- 3:33and guess what so you will never have to
- 3:35do that and because it's gone and I hope
- 3:39it stays gone forever now I'm asked to
- 3:43take some questions
- 3:45anybody's got any please
- 3:49let you want this
- 3:51you might need that
- 3:53but
- 3:55so ask away
- 3:59yes I got one right here at this lady
- 4:03had her hand up first year next sir this
- 4:06lady right here in the front room
- 4:08my pleasure my pleasure
- 4:20yeah here you go ahead
- 4:31[Music]
- 4:36well
- 4:38you know I was innocent I was innocent
- 4:40Manning by God's grace you know
- 4:43if you look at the Bible and
- 4:47Joseph that suffered through summer
- 4:50slings and arrows like that he wound up
- 4:52running Egypt at one point and so you
- 4:55know I I
- 4:57just kept my head up and you know my
- 5:00mother she would always tell me never to
- 5:02back off you know if you're innocent man
- 5:05you tell them what's up and and we lived
- 5:08at my dad said the same thing we you
- 5:10know you don't mess around with that
- 5:11stuff and
- 5:13by God's grace I stand here before you
- 5:17yes sir
- 5:19you got to hit a button on that I think
- 5:22you're giving this choice well what
- 5:24would you like to see done if there is
- 5:26one thing and the criminal justice to
- 5:28improve in criminal justice systems what
- 5:31would you
- 5:32I think that definitely should be a
- 5:35policy in the United States and
- 5:37in week that's a that's a long laundry
- 5:40list for me witness identification
- 5:44procedures that are far better than what
- 5:46we have to date you have double-blind
- 5:49sequential testing is it can be done now
- 5:51that's a lot better not to rely on a lot
- 5:53of this junk science that we knew I
- 5:56don't know if you've seen the credits
- 5:58but I dedicated some of it to Chris
- 6:00Conover was a man I was in prison with
- 6:02he did 19 years for hair comparison
- 6:05testing and they said both head hairs
- 6:08they found at the crime scene on a
- 6:09triple homicide were his and not only
- 6:13were they not his they were two
- 6:15different a tears
- 6:17hair comparison testing doesn't work
- 6:20same with ballistics a lot of different
- 6:23things we found we knew 20 30 40 years
- 6:26ago just don't work and we need to
- 6:29change some of that stuff but an
- 6:32accountability if a prosecutor
- 6:36war police officer knowingly with holds
- 6:39evidence or defense attorney for that
- 6:41other
- 6:42withholds evidence about another suspect
- 6:44there should be some punitive damages
- 6:46and pull his license or hers and not let
- 6:49them practice and I think that you know
- 6:53we have to be accountable we just can't
- 6:55our system of crim criminal justice is
- 6:59adversarial in nature it cannot be
- 7:01adversarial to the truth and so
- 7:08tell you truth has set you free is what
- 7:10he tell me yes or down here in front yep
- 7:20[Music]
- 7:58well we need to we need to decriminalize
- 8:00a lot of laws I think that's one of the
- 8:03first things our prisons are packed with
- 8:05people that have no business in there
- 8:07you know for smoking a little weed I
- 8:10mean but you know and I'm not condoning
- 8:13any of that yeah but what I'm saying is
- 8:17is that we need to get away from this
- 8:19pound of flesh thinking we do and start
- 8:21educating people in in the ways that the
- 8:25criminal justice system will work we've
- 8:27got 20 thousands of prisoners in the
- 8:29state of Maryland close to it and you
- 8:31know we got we building prisons left and
- 8:33right and persons are being built around
- 8:36for instance that we're built and we
- 8:38have to get away from that Miss mass
- 8:39incarceration has to stop we have to
- 8:42start doing some policy changes that's
- 8:45really going to work I think we could
- 8:47lighten the load its cost a lot of money
- 8:49and you know legalized marijuana and get
- 8:53away from all this crap that we're doing
- 8:55and and I'm not telling right you people
- 8:58you know you know just the ticket to do
- 9:02what they want but certainly you know
- 9:04like prohibition back in the day with
- 9:07alcohol we could get away from that it
- 9:09would cause a lot less problems and so
- 9:12I'm for decriminalization of a lot of
- 9:14things and
- 9:15the other thing is
- 9:18the state of Maryland spent six million
- 9:22dollars
- 9:23six million dollars in prosecuting me in
- 9:28which they didn't have to spend done if
- 9:31the hit went back and checked so
- 9:33thoroughness you know really paying
- 9:36attention what we're doing you know but
- 9:38I think for me that's it dis dis guy
- 9:41right there I see you I got you yet I
- 9:44was just curious after you were found
- 9:47innocent have you had any contact with
- 9:49Don's family or Thelma I have I have not
- 9:53I did when Tim and I were first doing
- 9:57the book years ago I was at Essex County
- 10:01Library one of the times didn't didn't
- 10:03show up but I was there and you know I
- 10:07met Eleanor helmick who was Dawn's aunt
- 10:10that was watching her that day it was a
- 10:13very emotional scene I never got to meet
- 10:14tom hamilton and or the kids
- 10:18you know i think this was one of those
- 10:20things that people get caught up in and
- 10:23the police were talking to two children
- 10:25the children make mistakes and you know
- 10:28it was
- 10:31Tom Hamilton said he was very sorry for
- 10:33what happened to me but it's through the
- 10:35media but I
- 10:36that was his only child and
- 10:40you know it was because of dawn I stand
- 10:43here I think in some way you know I work
- 10:46with murder victims families if you saw
- 10:48that last
- 10:49screenshot when I had my hands up when I
- 10:51was in the State House that lady that
- 10:52was sitting next to me is bonita spikes
- 10:55she's a murder victim's family member
- 10:57from New York who lost her husband to a
- 11:00robbery who was shot and killed who also
- 11:02opposed the death penalty as well so we
- 11:05have a lot of things going on up and so
- 11:08sorry for what happened to dawn but you
- 11:11know in her memory I try to make it
- 11:13better so everybody will never forget
- 11:16her as long as I'm standing
- 11:17[Applause]
- 11:23questions okay yeah first of all I want
- 11:26to say thank you for your service as a
- 11:28Marine you know fight newer item before
- 11:31you even before this house is marine to
- 11:33right there my dad was as well
- 11:35so thank you for that
- 11:38did you have any support in the prison
- 11:41any inmates or any any guards that you
- 11:44were able to confide in and and and you
- 11:47know have some support system within the
- 11:49prison well you know basically when you
- 11:51go to prison you don't really talk about
- 11:53your case
- 11:55that was made known to me from the very
- 11:58beginning but I did meet some people
- 12:00Chris was a very
- 12:03you know
- 12:05you know Chris was really cool and
- 12:09he had been there a long time he had
- 12:11been in out of prison all his life and
- 12:13he would even tell you if he was alive
- 12:14today the chris took his own life last
- 12:17year we had tried to work for a pardon
- 12:21for him and
- 12:22but him and I learned so many things
- 12:25blue he was in the credits as well he's
- 12:28another guy the blue is of Amanda talked
- 12:31me how to play chess and not in the
- 12:33conventional sense where we would play
- 12:35across from each other we had to play in
- 12:36the cell and then we call the pieces out
- 12:39we both had both sides of the board and
- 12:41we would set it up in like man pawn for
- 12:44and like that and yes how you play I
- 12:46don't know why he won all the time but
- 12:50anyway he he was you know he was an
- 12:54african-american man who was the one of
- 12:57the leaders from the nation Islam and he
- 12:59was see where he and I were tight you
- 13:01know for a while and he took two number
- 13:04two pencils and shoved them through his
- 13:06eyes
- 13:07to get a you know to die he wanted to
- 13:10die but it just he was doing life
- 13:14without parole in the dark
- 13:16but blue is in the custody of the
- 13:20the Maryland School of the blind now
- 13:23he's out all these blind he's learning
- 13:25place a city still beat me a chess I
- 13:27have no doubt
- 13:29but
- 13:31you know I was a lone wolf too I I
- 13:35traveled at yard by myself through two
- 13:38different riots you're also looking at a
- 13:39guy
- 13:40that step down the prison population on
- 13:43his own which was probably the craziest
- 13:45thing I ever did in my life um but I did
- 13:48and nothing nothing really happened I
- 13:50mean you know I got hit in the back of
- 13:52the head with a sock full of batteries I
- 13:54got stabbed in the CAF with a welding
- 13:56rod I got hit in the chest with a mass a
- 13:57lot well Jays hit me in the head with a
- 14:01dag on set it on shaft it was harder
- 14:03than that and
- 14:04but I I you know there's a lot of good
- 14:08men and women in these places that we
- 14:10seem to forget and that
- 14:12have changed their lives
- 14:15and you ever find out why the evidence
- 14:19was in the judges closet and a brown
- 14:21paper bag
- 14:23where argue that
- 14:25okay say that again
- 14:29did you ever find out what the evidence
- 14:32was in the judges closet and a brown
- 14:34paper bag sounds a little fishy to me
- 14:37Tim and I we talked about that when we
- 14:41were writing a book I you know what I
- 14:43nobody really knows I think the judge
- 14:46just forgot it and
- 14:51but I heard other people say that you
- 14:54know he might have kept it in here
- 14:55because technology might have wanted to
- 14:58catch up to it and like science and he
- 15:01didn't trust the state either and that
- 15:04was a good thing I thought and I was so
- 15:08paranoid at that point because of
- 15:10everything that went wrong and they were
- 15:12trying to win instead of trying to win
- 15:14the truth
- 15:15so i don't really can't tell you judge
- 15:18james t smith was the last judge i had
- 15:21and he was the county executive in
- 15:23baltimore um you know one of these days
- 15:26I'm gonna ask him
- 15:27if I ever see him again
- 15:30question I see something over there
- 15:32thank you hi thank you for taking my
- 15:34question
- 15:36for those of you that don't know there
- 15:38has been a case in talbot county and
- 15:40there was 1986 there was a horrific
- 15:42murder in
- 15:442000 which was 14 years later they
- 15:47arrested two men who
- 15:49have been in jail for 15 years and I'm
- 15:52very close with one of the families of
- 15:53one of these men
- 15:55appeals
- 15:57evidentiary hearings etc Innocence
- 16:00Project got involved in 2012 this past
- 16:03year they applied for a writ of
- 16:05innocence after begging for two years
- 16:08for evidence that was slow in coming
- 16:11there is no physical evidence whatsoever
- 16:13found at the scene DNA fingerprints palm
- 16:17prints were linked to other people one
- 16:19of whom is walking the street and these
- 16:22men are innocent and
- 16:23there was the rid of innocence and a
- 16:26request to retrial both were denied by
- 16:29the judge the one and only judge in
- 16:30Talbot County hope he's nobody here that
- 16:33knows him because I'll probably be in
- 16:34big trouble now we're waiting to hear
- 16:38because the judge decided he wants
- 16:39another review of the court transcript
- 16:42what can someone do as a regular person
- 16:47I was at every day of this hearing in
- 16:50April for two weeks the only way they
- 16:54convicted these men was on 15 years
- 16:57later a confidential criminal informant
- 17:00came forward with ulterior motives
- 17:02because the family had a reward out
- 17:06it's heartbreaking to see the family of
- 17:08the victim there 30 years later
- 17:11with all this being brought up it's
- 17:14heartbreaking for the family of these
- 17:16men who have been in jail
- 17:18what can a person do
- 17:20what can you know a society do a
- 17:23community do what can a person who just
- 17:25cares about a gross miss justice do and
- 17:29by the way Barry Scheck was in talbot
- 17:31county did anybody know that because it
- 17:33never hit the papers never hit the TV I
- 17:35met him and shook his hand along with
- 17:37the 14 other Innocence Project attorneys
- 17:40who were sitting in that courtroom
- 17:41shaking their heads gross miscarriage of
- 17:44justice
- 17:45what do you suggest well I i would still
- 17:49still remain vigilant about it obviously
- 17:52I think
- 17:53whoever these men are have great
- 17:56advocate in you I can just see listening
- 17:59to you talk about this and and maybe
- 18:02before this is all over we can exchange
- 18:05emails and I'll try to look into this
- 18:07but I know Sean Ambrose who runs the
- 18:11mid-atlantic Innocence Project and you
- 18:15know she there if they're in their hands
- 18:18that's the best people on the planet for
- 18:21them if there's a way that will find it
- 18:23and I'm almost certain of it and
- 18:26you know so
- 18:28just keep on plugging away I mean you
- 18:31know never
- 18:33leave them stay and tell them the same
- 18:36thing
- 18:37thank you questions
- 18:40anybody else yes right here yep I gotcha
- 18:57well just the day-to-day things you know
- 19:01it was like
- 19:04getting a job you know I've always been
- 19:06self-employed
- 19:08pretty much i worked at different places
- 19:11i had a lot of problems i remember i
- 19:14worked at a tool company in easton for a
- 19:18brief period of time i'm not going to
- 19:19mention her name's black and decker and
- 19:23they you know wanted me to to you know
- 19:27they wanted me to show my pardon they
- 19:29wanted my
- 19:30everything in a pint of blood almost it
- 19:33seemed like
- 19:34so how do i sign
- 19:38unemployment form that said have you
- 19:40ever been arrested for a crime before
- 19:43yes I didn't do it but you know and I'm
- 19:47being flipped but that's exactly what
- 19:50you have to do we all these exonerees
- 19:52there is no
- 19:54do you know there's no constitutional
- 19:57right after you've been convicted of a
- 20:00crime of innocence did you all know that
- 20:03you do not have any more after that
- 20:06first initial 30 to 90 days is over with
- 20:09there is you cannot argue in a court of
- 20:12law on your innocence in appellate court
- 20:15ever and if Tim was here I have they but
- 20:18it's you can't do it and you cannot
- 20:22argue innocence that's it it's only
- 20:24technical merit alone to get you going
- 20:27so it was really tough at you know
- 20:32dating
- 20:33just getting a date you know blimp let
- 20:36me tell you people had very didn't talk
- 20:39about me in the fondness of stairs
- 20:41things before I left and so I get out
- 20:44and I go out on a date and I have a date
- 20:45and
- 20:47my you're a nice guy where have you been
- 20:50for the last nine years
- 20:52well I was accused of a brutal murder
- 20:54and I didn't do it I'm the first DNA guy
- 20:56in the United States to be freed by it
- 20:59Pass me the salt
- 21:02she actually got up and walked out
- 21:05but her loss I'm just saying it's very
- 21:09very hard and there's no resources for
- 21:13us do you know they have resources it's
- 21:15called a second chance act for criminals
- 21:18people who commit crimes yet services
- 21:21they get pregnant innocent people
- 21:23exonerated people nothing
- 21:26but they're getting ready we're getting
- 21:29ready to sail upon them and I I'm just
- 21:33tired of seeing it these some of these
- 21:35guys got a lot of problems and I'm not
- 21:36just talking about throwing a million
- 21:37tiles at somebody it would be great but
- 21:42how to go to school get a college degree
- 21:45how to learn a trade get a boat bye-bye
- 21:49things you want to do go to to true or
- 21:51trade school you know what did I have to
- 21:54do I had to had to borrow and get
- 21:56everything I ever gotten I didn't have
- 21:58any chance to get anything and so we
- 22:02need to change those laws
- 22:05questions anybody else
- 22:08and we could figure
- 22:13ruffner
- 22:20you know we we talked to everybody I
- 22:24mean basically he was in the yard he
- 22:26lifted weights but you know he hung
- 22:28around with other people with those
- 22:31charges and he was what we call a rape
- 22:34artist so that's what he he did you know
- 22:38and he was always hung up with those
- 22:40kind of guys and they travel to grant I
- 22:42never liked those guys and
- 22:45we all but we all had to lift in the
- 22:47same darts you would tolerate people you
- 22:49know just saying like you don't have
- 22:51friends you have acquaintances well
- 22:53thats he was an acquaintance and
- 22:55prisons not that you don't have no
- 22:57friends in prison to most part and
- 23:01you know I never liked to do
- 23:03but you know i'm looking for a
- 23:05six-foot-five guy you know he was a
- 23:09little thing you know he's a little guy
- 23:11we look like Mutt and Jeff standing next
- 23:12to each other so I
- 23:18wouldn't I wouldn't have a whole lot of
- 23:20good things to say to him at this point
- 23:22I don't think you know he's got his life
- 23:26sentence will not start until his 75
- 23:30years 45 years is up for what he did and
- 23:35you know had they went back a check we
- 23:39wouldn't be talking right now probably
- 23:40you know and he would have arrested him
- 23:43and this would all been brushed away
- 23:45like it was supposed to be and he would
- 23:48have been convicted and I wouldn't be
- 23:49here but I
- 23:52look back in hindsight I didn't see
- 23:54anything
- 23:58he told me but when I day I left prison
- 24:01and so did everybody else I heard him
- 24:03holler through the bars you know good
- 24:05luck
- 24:06and he was just key to a lot of things I
- 24:14might take a being a closet with him for
- 24:17about five minutes I don't know we got
- 24:20to do any good questions down here
- 24:28he says he didn't but you know he
- 24:31remembers what he drugs he took the day
- 24:35of the murder he remembered the murder
- 24:37he remembered taking a vacation the next
- 24:39day and
- 24:41you know I
- 24:44think if you can kill a nine year old
- 24:46little girl lines not much of a problem
- 24:48you know so I you know I don't believe a
- 24:52word he said
- 24:56questions right here it is it fell
- 25:07right
- 25:09[Music]
- 25:19no I don't actually
- 25:23[Music]
- 25:29right but I also could have died in
- 25:32prison from a stabbing or I could have
- 25:35did anything could have happened it's
- 25:37you know I got rid of the death penalty
- 25:40because
- 25:41we shouldn't walk over the innocent to
- 25:44get to the guilty and that was the
- 25:47reason for that that is a total new
- 25:48number one issue for me there was a man
- 25:52that I know he's a exonerees in Florida
- 25:54his name is Freddy pits and on the back
- 25:58of those blue shirts that said witnessed
- 26:00innocence that's a group that I belong
- 26:01to were all death row survivors and on
- 26:05the back of the shirt it says you can
- 26:07free a man from jail but you can't free
- 26:11him from the grave and it is a tragic
- 26:14thing that they would have to stay in
- 26:16there for life like this lady was
- 26:18talking over here about these men who
- 26:20spent 15 years in but I can't free them
- 26:23if they're dead and
- 26:25may God's freed them from that but you
- 26:29know that's the that's the quandary we
- 26:31are at I think life without parole is
- 26:34the best option do we have now honestly
- 26:37yes I do believe there's some people
- 26:39that should never see the light of day
- 26:41ruffner being one of them
- 26:44but I don't want him execute
- 26:48accountability we all have to live with
- 26:51what people have done in our lives and
- 26:53in our communities and so should they
- 26:56they shouldn't be taken away and not
- 27:00held accountable by by being alive every
- 27:02day in that place I think you know it's
- 27:05a better thing that we do if we give
- 27:08them life without parole
- 27:10questions I seen somebody Jay I think on
- 27:14the last one I think it's super saver
- 27:16more I just want to say I'm cooked
- 27:19leather snuff you and want to say hi to
- 27:21tim a long while since we've seen each
- 27:24other the u.s. chicago with the king but
- 27:27i want to leave reiterate on something
- 27:29that the lady asked you when you got out
- 27:32how did you cope and
- 27:33with everything he worked with me after
- 27:37he got out for a couple years or few
- 27:39years and married into our family
- 27:42if you could imagine like a dog being
- 27:45pinned up and a little box that was way
- 27:48too small for the dog and one day you
- 27:51open the damn door and you tell take off
- 27:54running and he takes two or three steps
- 27:56and goods
- 27:58what's going on
- 28:00that's the way he was for a couple years
- 28:02ago Jim you just imagine being penned up
- 28:05in something like that and and say
- 28:07here's the door open the door go then
- 28:09for yourself make eleven put food on the
- 28:12table
- 28:13it will turn up what time we were
- 28:15working together we worked on the order
- 28:17for a while he was working with me and I
- 28:19seen this seen it what he's done and
- 28:22what he become now me no biggies that
- 28:26would be out there tolling in him
- 28:28makeshift for an hour so you wouldn't
- 28:31get anything done these thoughts will
- 28:32get to his head with what had been on
- 28:34and the phone would be ringing and it
- 28:36would be either Tim calling and that's
- 28:39when they were started working on the
- 28:40book
- 28:40that's how long ago thats groaning
- 28:43and to see him
- 28:46I'm not saying mature because he was
- 28:49maturing but mature were because he'd
- 28:51been stopped up for what he's become
- 28:53then to what he's done now when he
- 28:57couldn't walk on his own two feet after
- 28:59being stopped up for almost nine years
- 29:01to see what he's done now and accomplish
- 29:04the things that he's done nationwide and
- 29:06especially here in the state of Maryland
- 29:07and people that his help I think that's
- 29:10one hell of a run after you get out of
- 29:12the cage what do you think
- 29:14[Music]
- 29:15[Applause]
- 29:16that's what boy crochet
- 29:19well those i was thinking about
- 29:23his kids and I used to be able to put
- 29:26him on my hand like this I can't carry
- 29:28you like that anymore Justin but it back
- 29:31in the day we had so much fun and and it
- 29:34gave me a place but I remember Tim you
- 29:37remember this in so Tim was in he was on
- 29:40vacation and in somewhere and I've shot
- 29:44of getting so I talked to his wife I
- 29:45said you're not gonna believe what's
- 29:47going on I said Tim said he wanted to
- 29:49have an ending for the book and I said I
- 29:52think I got it and they just caught the
- 29:54real killer and that's how we ended a
- 29:57book in that's when I was with Jay when
- 30:00the phone call came across and and
- 30:04Ambrose wouldn't see me and it was
- 30:06finally it was a vindication man it was
- 30:10almost like some magical moment in our
- 30:12lives back then and it seems so long ago
- 30:15but and it was it was like 12 years ago
- 30:18it's and in that Tim wants to speak
- 30:24but about it this is tim John a long
- 30:27time bloody oh good see
- 30:32[Music]
- 30:34I just have a couple quick anecdote so
- 30:37I'll add to this lovely night it's great
- 30:39to see so many people coming out to see
- 30:41you Kirk and how great you're doing so
- 30:43Kirk and I well well I'm writing the
- 30:46book the the Baltimore prosecutors are
- 30:49still acting like Kirk is guilty and I'm
- 30:51like two-thirds the way through this
- 30:52book and I'm not quite sure how I'm
- 30:54going to end the thing and that's when
- 30:55Kirk calls be on the phone I mean he's
- 30:57crying he's crying you tune they got the
- 31:01guy we actually got that is the same in
- 31:03the same prison tier I mean that was and
- 31:05there's so many miracles in this book so
- 31:08the second judge in Kirk's Kirk series
- 31:12of trials was so concerned he was he had
- 31:15misgivings about the verdict and the
- 31:19protocol in Baltimore County at that
- 31:21time was after five years they destroy
- 31:23the evidence and the judge said you know
- 31:24what
- 31:25bring that evidence to my chambers I'm
- 31:27going to put it in my closet
- 31:29because I just have a feeling about this
- 31:32and so it was eight years later that Bob
- 31:36Moore and was able to find you forgot
- 31:38about it and so and so some clerk said
- 31:40something to Bob and he finds the
- 31:42evidence I mean that was one more little
- 31:43miracle they were there were a series of
- 31:45miracles but I just want to say Kirk and
- 31:47I after the book was written we did like
- 31:49a six or seven week tour around the
- 31:50country please
- 31:52we had three thousand people in st. Paul
- 31:55to came to see you and
- 31:57the lines I would you know I was the
- 32:00author you know signed the book and I
- 32:02couldn't figure out why we had these
- 32:04lines I mean would it be like people
- 32:06would be way in line for like 45 minutes
- 32:07and they come up and they start crying
- 32:10and hugging Kirk and it was like they
- 32:12had a cousin or a nephew or a brother or
- 32:14a friend or somebody who'd been
- 32:16exonerated and it was like I mean you
- 32:20remember that it was unbelievable
- 32:21everywhere we went yeah and then we did
- 32:23this one thing Kirk and I where we got
- 32:25invited to a Maryland state judges
- 32:27conference oh yeah we went out to
- 32:29cumberland and like 150 circuit court
- 32:33judges from the state of Maryland this
- 32:34was before the death penalty was
- 32:35outlawed in Maryland they give Kirk a
- 32:38standing ovation yeah and I was like I
- 32:42couldn't believe it I didn't know
- 32:43whether they're going to boo us off the
- 32:44stage what they're going to do and I
- 32:46mean they were all moved even the US
- 32:48Marshals shook her hand he they said I
- 32:50know who you are and then there's a the
- 32:53last Lou anecdote is kirkus is lobbying
- 32:56for this bill and in the sittin in
- 32:59Congress to get money for people around
- 33:04the country who meet certain criteria
- 33:06and you know could possibly be at the
- 33:09innocent to get money so that
- 33:11those those states could have the money
- 33:14to test the DNA for these for these
- 33:17certain you know potentially innocent
- 33:20people and it's it's held up in the
- 33:22Senate the house passed it the Senate
- 33:26has its it's mired in the Senate and
- 33:28Kirk goes around and gives a copy of the
- 33:31book it's right to 100 US senators and
- 33:35three weeks later passes the Senate and
- 33:37it was yeah
- 33:40it's called the Kirk Bloodsworth hlub
- 33:43they what's the name of the program it
- 33:45was like the Kirk Bloodsworth innocent
- 33:47protection of church was worth
- 33:48post-conviction DNA testing program and
- 33:51I meant to twenty men did it have gotten
- 33:54out from that program one in Tennessee
- 33:56yeah yeah
- 33:58[Applause]
- 34:00yeahs your story man there's a great
- 34:03movie Kirk thanks thanks thanks a lot
- 34:05way to be a part of tonight's
- 34:07festivities no I'm done he just took the
- 34:11show I will turn this over to whoever's
- 34:14in charge

- 34:18doing right I
