- 0:07the mission of UICC is to basically
- 0:10bring the world together to address
- 0:12cancer globally reduce the cancer burden
- 0:14to address inequity to make sure that
- 0:16wherever you get cancer you have a
- 0:18reasonable chance of surviving it but
- 0:19also to make sure the cancers on the
- 0:21global health and development agenda
- 0:22well when cancer leaders summit is just
- 0:24one event that we run during a year
- 0:25which actually takes our mission forward
- 0:27it's the one time when we bring together
- 0:28the global elite in cancer and global
- 0:31health to talk about specific topics
- 0:32which are relevant to cancer and also
- 0:34the global health agenda so we bring
- 0:36them together in a different location
- 0:37around the world to make sure that we
- 0:38talk about something which is relevant
- 0:40to them so when they go back to their
- 0:41countries they can do something about it
- 0:42when the Mexico well cancer leaders
- 0:44summit was innovative because we tried
- 0:45to do two things
- 0:46while more swaps you run the normal
- 0:48summit and bring in the global health
- 0:50leaders together but secondly to have a
- 0:51large impact on the region to arrange a
- 0:54number of sub meetings around the event
- 0:55leading young leaders including leaders
- 0:57of cancer organizations leaders with
- 0:59cities and brought them together on the
- 1:01sidelines of the summit but integrated
- 1:03into it so that when they left they had
- 1:05enough information and they were
- 1:06inspired to do something in the region
- 1:08we measure the success under a number of
- 1:10criteria the basics like were the right
- 1:12people there the quality of the speakers
- 1:14the number of VIPs who attended how many
- 1:17countries we do all of that but to be
- 1:18honest we're looking for more important
- 1:20things like if we set out for example in
- 1:22Mexico to help Mexico develop or give a
- 1:24commitment to a national cancer control
- 1:26plan did we achieve that now that will
- 1:28affect the lives of millions of people
- 1:29in the future so those are the sort of
- 1:31things that we measure to make sure that
- 1:33our impact is long-term and not just
- 1:35having a great event where people leave
- 1:36thinking they were inspired Mexico has
- 1:38really taken on board the issue of
- 1:40cancer more so that's ever done before
- 1:42working with the local sub society the
- 1:44government and private sector as well
- 1:46it's actually made a commitment to a
- 1:48global campaign that we've launched
- 1:49called treatment for all now what that
- 1:50means is that the whole country sets out
- 1:53an objective over a longer period of
- 1:55time using the support of the
- 1:56international community like myself and
- 1:57my team to actually improve the
- 1:59treatment that anyone gets in that
- 2:01country when they develop cancer now
- 2:02that is a major legacy so I'm really
- 2:04happy that Mexico is a leader not just
- 2:06in the region but actually globally to
- 2:08be one of the first countries to sign
- 2:10to treatment for all
- 2:11[Music]
