  1. 0:00In this world, once every year, an
  2. 0:01enormous black mystery box falls from
  3. 0:03the sky into every town. The boxes are
  4. 0:05hundreds of feet tall, covered in
  5. 0:06glowing golden symbols, and each
  6. 0:08contains a portal to a different world.
  7. 0:10One year, a box revealed a jungle filled
  8. 0:12with dinosaurs. Another [music]
  9. 0:13contained a city made of gold. And
  10. 0:14another held an endless ocean filled
  11. 0:16with enormous creatures. Every box stays
  12. 0:18open for exactly 1 hour. Anyone can
  13. 0:20enter and take whatever they find, but
  14. 0:21when the doors close, anyone still
  15. 0:23inside is never seen again. Five years
  16. 0:24[music] ago, Ryan's father entered a box
  17. 0:26containing a beautiful floating
  18. 0:27paradise. In the distance stood an
  19. 0:29enormous golden statue. He promised Ryan
  20. 0:31he'd bring him a piece for his birthday,
  21. 0:32but as his father approached the statue,
  22. 0:34he suddenly stopped. He slowly looked
  23. 0:35up. An enormous shadow passed overhead.
  24. 0:37Ryan watched his father disappear.
  25. 0:39Seconds later, the doors slammed shut.
  26. 0:40Ever since then, Ryan had waited for the
  27. 0:42boxes to return, hoping to find his
  28. 0:43father. Then, one morning, a gigantic
  29. 0:45black cube crashed into the town square.
  30. 0:47Thousands gathered as golden symbols
  31. 0:49[music] glowed across its surface.
  32. 0:50Suddenly, the doors opened. Inside was a
  33. 0:52frozen wasteland. Mountains of ice
  34. 0:54stretched toward a dark purple sky,
  35. 0:55[music] and strange glowing creatures
  36. 0:57wandered through the snow. A countdown
  37. 0:58appeared above the entrance. 60 minutes
  38. 1:00remaining. Hundreds of [music] people
  39. 1:01rushed inside. Ryan followed. Walking
  40. 1:03through the snow, he noticed something
  41. 1:05golden sticking out of the ice. He
  42. 1:06brushed away the snow and [music] froze.
  43. 1:08It was the exact same statue his father
  44. 1:10had approached five years ago. Ryan
  45. 1:11began digging desperately. Beneath the
  46. 1:13statue was a metal hatch. He pulled it
  47. 1:14open. A staircase descended underground.
  48. 1:16Ryan climbed down into an enormous
  49. 1:18tunnel filled with thousands of glowing
  50. 1:19doors, each marked [music] with a
  51. 1:20different symbol. One showed a dinosaur.
  52. 1:22Another showed an ocean. And at the end
  53. 1:24was a door covered [music] in golden
  54. 1:25clouds. Ryan recognized it immediately.
  55. 1:27It was his father's paradise. He grabbed
  56. 1:29the handle and pulled. The door opened
  57. 1:31into a floating island surrounded by
  58. 1:32waterfalls and golden trees, but the
  59. 1:34island was empty. Ryan searched the
  60. 1:36abandoned houses, calling for his
  61. 1:37father. Suddenly, he heard a faint
  62. 1:38voice. "Ryan?" He turned around. His
  63. 1:40father was chained to the wall of an
  64. 1:41abandoned building. "Dad!" Ryan rushed
  65. 1:43toward him and began pulling [music] at
  66. 1:44the chains. "Ryan, you shouldn't have
  67. 1:46come!" "I came to find you. We have to
  68. 1:47get out!" His father grabbed his arm.
  69. 1:49"Ryan, listen to me. Don't trust the
  70. 1:51sky." Ryan finally broke the chains.
  71. 1:52Suddenly, the ground began shaking. An
  72. 1:54enormous shadow passed over the island.
  73. 1:56His father's [music] face went pale.
  74. 1:57"It's here!" Ryan looked up. A gigantic
  75. 1:59black creature crawled across the sky.
  76. 2:01Its body covered in thousands of glowing
  77. 2:03golden eyes. One eye turned toward him,
  78. 2:04then [music] another, and another. His
  79. 2:06father grabbed his hand. "Run!" They
  80. 2:07sprinted toward the golden door as the
  81. 2:09creature reached [music] through the
  82. 2:10clouds. Its enormous fingers tearing
  83. 2:11apart the floating islands. They jumped
  84. 2:13through just as the creature's hand
  85. 2:14smashed into the ground behind them.
  86. 2:16Ryan slammed the door shut. "How much
  87. 2:17time is left?" his father asked. [music]
  88. 2:19Ryan checked the countdown on his wrist.
  89. 2:2047 seconds. They sprinted through the
  90. 2:22tunnel and up the staircase. But as they
  91. 2:23reached the frozen wasteland, [music]
  92. 2:24the ice began cracking. Gigantic black
  93. 2:27tentacles burst through the ground. The
  94. 2:28creature was emerging beneath them. They
  95. 2:30ran toward the entrance as the cube
  96. 2:31began shaking. "20 seconds!" The
  97. 2:32creature smashed through the mountains
  98. 2:34behind them. "10 seconds!" Ryan could
  99. 2:35see the town square through the open
  100. 2:37doors. "5 seconds!" The creature lunged.
  101. 2:39Ryan's father grabbed him and jumped.
  102. 2:40They flew through the doorway just as
  103. 2:42the enormous doors slammed shut. Ryan
  104. 2:44hugged his father tightly, tears
  105. 2:45streaming down his face. His father
  106. 2:47reached into his pocket and pulled out a
  107. 2:48piece of gold from the enormous statue
  108. 2:50in Paradise. He smiled. "Happy birthday,
  109. 2:52Ryan." In this world, once a year,
  110. 2:53[music] the whole town plays
  111. 2:54hide-and-seek with Mr. Tick. On Seeking
  112. 2:56Night, a tall green thing with a ticking
  113. 2:58[music] clock for a heart counts to 100
  114. 3:00in the town square. Anyone he finds is
  115. 3:01gone forever. Last year, he found
  116. 3:03[music] me and I survived. Here's how it
  117. 3:05works. At midnight, the church bell
  118. 3:06rings and the fog rolls in. Mr. Tick
  119. 3:08walks [music] out of it. He's tall, way
  120. 3:09too thin. His smile goes from ear to
  121. 3:11ear, and where his heart should be,
  122. 3:13there's a clock. Tick, tick, tick. The
  123. 3:14closer he gets to you, the faster it
  124. 3:16ticks. He faces the church wall, counts
  125. 3:17[music] to 100, and the whole town hides
  126. 3:19until the sun comes up. The weird thing
  127. 3:21is, he never looks exactly the same. One
  128. 3:22year, he limped. One year, he whistled
  129. 3:24the whole night. The grownups [music]
  130. 3:25just say it's the fog. So, in our town,
  131. 3:27hiding is everything. Houses come with
  132. 3:29hiding spots instead of garages. Kids
  133. 3:30get a grade [music] for hiding on their
  134. 3:31report cards. The mayor has hidden in
  135. 3:33the same chimney for 30 years. And
  136. 3:34there's only one rule: never look at
  137. 3:36him. My little sister, Dot, [music] is
  138. 3:37the best hider in town. Every time she
  139. 3:39hides, she hums the same little song.
  140. 3:41She says, "It's so you can always find
  141. 3:42me." Last year, I hid in the big oven at
  142. 3:44the bakery. At 100, the ticking came
  143. 3:46straight [music] for me. Tick, tick,
  144. 3:47tick, tick, tick. The oven door opened.
  145. 3:49That huge grin was right in my face. He
  146. 3:51leaned in and whispered, "Found you."
  147. 3:53And everything went [music] black. When
  148. 3:54I opened my eyes, I was still in the
  149. 3:55bakery, but everything was gray. Fog
  150. 3:57everywhere. Every clock on the wall had
  151. 3:59stopped at midnight. [music] Then a hand
  152. 4:00grabbed my shoulder. It was an old man.
  153. 4:02He walked with a limp. He smiled and
  154. 4:03said, "Easy, kid. You made it." I asked
  155. 4:05him where I was. "The other side of the
  156. 4:07fog," he said. "Sometimes [music] Mr.
  157. 4:08Tick lets people go. They end up here."
  158. 4:10And I wasn't the only one. There were
  159. 4:11about a dozen of us. A mailman, a lady
  160. 4:13who whistled all day long, a boy in
  161. 4:14pajamas. They gave me bread. They gave
  162. 4:16me a bed. [music] Nobody here ever got
  163. 4:18hungry. Nobody ever got old. And they
  164. 4:19told me the best part. Once a year, when
  165. 4:21the bell rings, one of us gets to go
  166. 4:22home. So, I waited. [music] Every night
  167. 4:24I sat at the edge of the fog. And
  168. 4:26sometimes, if I listened really hard, I
  169. 4:27could hear Dot humming on the other
  170. 4:28side, like she was still looking for me.
  171. 4:30Then, one night, the church bell rang.
  172. 4:32The old man put his hand on my shoulder.
  173. 4:33"Your turn, kid," he said. "Go home."
  174. 4:35[music] Everyone smiled at me, wider
  175. 4:36than I'd ever seen them smile. I walked
  176. 4:38into the fog, toward the sound of the
  177. 4:39bell, toward home. The fog got thicker
  178. 4:41and thicker. And then, it was gone.
  179. 4:42[music] I was standing in the town
  180. 4:44square, facing the church wall, and I
  181. 4:45was counting. 98, 99, 100. Behind me,
  182. 4:48doors [music] slammed. People screamed.
  183. 4:50The whole town was running and hiding
  184. 4:51from me. I looked down. Where my heart
  185. 4:53should be, there was a clock. Tick,
  186. 4:54tick, tick. [music] That's when
  187. 4:55everything made sense. The year Mr. Tick
  188. 4:57limped, that was the old man. The year
  189. 4:59he whistled all night, that was the
  190. 5:00lady. The people on the other side of
  191. 5:01the fog weren't survivors. They were
  192. 5:03every Mr. Tick from every year before.
  193. 5:05Nobody he finds ever survives. [music]
  194. 5:06You wait in the fog for 1 year, and when
  195. 5:08the bell rings, you walk back out as the
  196. 5:10next Mr. Tick. [music] Last year, Mr.
  197. 5:11Tick found me. This year, I am Mr. Tick.
  198. 5:14And then I heard it, humming, coming
  199. 5:15from the bakery, from the oven, my old
  200. 5:17hiding spot. Dot. I tried to stop. I
  201. 5:18really tried, but my legs kept [music]
  202. 5:20walking. I opened the oven door. Dot
  203. 5:22looked up at me, shaking. And I heard
  204. 5:23myself whisper, "I found you." In my
  205. 5:24town, on full [music] moon nights, the
  206. 5:26moon comes down from the sky and looks
  207. 5:28through your windows. And whoever it
  208. 5:29sees is gone by morning. That's why
  209. 5:31every house in town has thick wooden
  210. 5:32boards. [music] When the church bell
  211. 5:33rings at sunset, every family nails them
  212. 5:35over every single window. Then the kids
  213. 5:37go to bed at 9:00, and our parents
  214. 5:38remind us of the most important rule. No
  215. 5:40matter what [music] you hear, never
  216. 5:41leave your room after midnight. My
  217. 5:43parents are the best. Every night Mom
  218. 5:44sings the same lullaby to me and my
  219. 5:46little sister Ellie. And Dad [music]
  220. 5:47checks every board twice. But nobody can
  221. 5:49stop the moon from looking. On full moon
  222. 5:51nights, it floats down so low it almost
  223. 5:53touches the roofs. [music] A huge pale
  224. 5:54face with giant round eyes sliding from
  225. 5:57house to house, peeking through every
  226. 5:58crack. And if one of those eyes finds
  227. 6:00you, [music] the next morning your bed
  228. 6:01is empty and your window is wide open.
  229. 6:03Last month, it took my best friend Leo.
  230. 6:05Leo lived right across the street. He
  231. 6:06was the only kid in town who wasn't
  232. 6:07scared [music] of the moon. He used to
  233. 6:08say, "It doesn't look hungry. It looks
  234. 6:10sad." His family had the thickest boards
  235. 6:12on the whole street, but the morning
  236. 6:13after the full moon, his window was open
  237. 6:15and the boards were lying in the grass.
  238. 6:16Everybody said the moon took him. His
  239. 6:18mom cried on the porch all morning.
  240. 6:19>> [music]
  241. 6:19>> The next day, I saw her at the bakery
  242. 6:21laughing like nothing had happened. A
  243. 6:22week later, I found Leo's notebook in
  244. 6:24our secret tree house. [music] It was
  245. 6:25full of drawings of the moon, but in his
  246. 6:27drawings, the moon was smiling and on
  247. 6:28the last page, he wrote three things.
  248. 6:30Mom isn't Mom at night. The boards
  249. 6:32aren't [music] there to keep the moon
  250. 6:33out. Leave a crack. I didn't understand.
  251. 6:35My mom is the nicest person in the
  252. 6:36world, but after that, [music] I started
  253. 6:37noticing things. After every full moon,
  254. 6:39Mom's fingers are wrapped in bandages.
  255. 6:41Dad sleeps the whole next day. And on
  256. 6:43the inside of my bedroom door, there are
  257. 6:44long, thin scratches at the height of a
  258. 6:46grown-up's hand. When I asked Mom about
  259. 6:48them, she smiled and said it was the
  260. 6:49dog. We don't have a dog. Tonight was
  261. 6:51the full [music] moon. When the bell
  262. 6:52rang, Mom came into my room with her
  263. 6:53hammer. She nailed the board over my
  264. 6:55window, one nail [music] at a time. Then
  265. 6:56she kissed my forehead and said,
  266. 6:57"Goodnight, sweetheart. Don't come out,
  267. 6:59whatever you hear." She was smiling, but
  268. 7:00her smile was too wide. At midnight, the
  269. 7:02house went [music] quiet. Then I heard
  270. 7:04something in the hallway, something
  271. 7:05crawling. Nails scraping across the
  272. 7:06floor and Mom's voice humming our
  273. 7:08lullaby, but slower and wrong. [music]
  274. 7:10Then sniffing, right under my door. Then
  275. 7:12a soft knock. "Sweetheart, it's Mom.
  276. 7:13Open the door." I grabbed the
  277. 7:14screwdriver [music] from under my bed
  278. 7:16and I pulled out one nail. A thin line
  279. 7:17of silver light spilled across my floor
  280. 7:19and a giant eye appeared in the crack,
  281. 7:21but it wasn't looking at me. It was
  282. 7:22looking past me, at my [music] door. The
  283. 7:23handle was turning. The door creaked
  284. 7:25open and the moonlight hit what was
  285. 7:26standing there. It was wearing Mom's
  286. 7:28[music] nightgown, but it was way too
  287. 7:29tall. Its arms dragged on the floor. Its
  288. 7:31jaw hung all the way down to its chest
  289. 7:33[music] and when the light touched it,
  290. 7:34it screamed and ran. Then the board flew
  291. 7:36off my window and the light lifted me
  292. 7:37out of my room up into the sky. From up
  293. 7:39there, I could see the whole town and
  294. 7:41behind every boarded window, in every
  295. 7:42hallway, [music] long, thin shapes were
  296. 7:44crawling toward the kids' bedroom doors.
  297. 7:46The moon was never taking kids. It was
  298. 7:48saving [music] them. The boards were
  299. 7:49never there to keep the moon out. They
  300. 7:50were there so the moon couldn't see what
  301. 7:52our parents turn into after midnight. Up
  302. 7:53on the moon, I saw Leo. [music] He was
  303. 7:55waving at me, smiling bigger than I had
  304. 7:56ever seen him smile. And all the missing
  305. 7:58kids were there with him, safe. That's
  306. 8:00when I remembered. [music] My little
  307. 8:01sister, Ellie. Her window was still
  308. 8:02boarded shut. In this empire, nobody has
  309. 8:04seen the emperor in 40 years. You see,
  310. 8:06he only speaks through his parrot, a
  311. 8:08giant golden parrot that sits on the
  312. 8:09palace balcony. And every morning at
  313. 8:118:00 a.m. sharp, it squawks the
  314. 8:13emperor's orders. "Nobody enters the
  315. 8:14palace. BOW TO THE BALCONY. BRING the
  316. 8:16emperor his crackers." And the whole
  317. 8:18empire obeys. Every single day, three
  318. 8:20wagons full of crackers roll into the
  319. 8:22palace. Nobody asks why. My name is Pip,
  320. 8:24and I'm the only person in the empire
  321. 8:25who writes down every order. I've done
  322. 8:27it since I was six, notebook after
  323. 8:28notebook. And one night, I noticed
  324. 8:30something. The orders were the same
  325. 8:31every year. Same words, same order, same
  326. 8:34day, like a song on repeat. "Nobody
  327. 8:36enters the palace." On the first of
  328. 8:37every month. "More crackers." Every
  329. 8:39Tuesday. For 40 years. Nobody else had
  330. 8:41ever noticed. So, the next morning,
  331. 8:42>> [music]
  332. 8:42>> I hid inside a cracker wagon. It rolled
  333. 8:44through the palace gates, past the
  334. 8:45guards, past the walls, into the
  335. 8:47darkest, dustiest hallway I'd ever seen.
  336. 8:49Cobwebs on every painting, dust on every
  337. 8:51step. Nobody had cleaned this place in
  338. 8:53years. I followed the cracker crumbs all
  339. 8:55the way to the throne room, and I pushed
  340. 8:56open the doors. The throne was empty,
  341. 8:58just a crown sitting on the cushion,
  342. 8:59[music] covered in dust. And next to it,
  343. 9:01a little stone grave. Here lies the
  344. 9:03emperor. The emperor didn't stop showing
  345. 9:04his face. He died 40 years ago. Then I
  346. 9:07heard it. Flap, flap. The giant golden
  347. 9:08parrot landed on the throne, old,
  348. 9:10feathers falling out. It looked at me.
  349. 9:12"Nobody enters the palace." It squawked.
  350. 9:13Then, quieter, "Nobody. Nobody." It had
  351. 9:15been alone in here for 40 years, eating
  352. 9:17crackers, repeating every order the
  353. 9:19emperor ever taught it, because it
  354. 9:20didn't know what else to do. Nobody was
  355. 9:21ruling the empire, just a lonely bird
  356. 9:23remembering. Then I saw a letter on the
  357. 9:25throne, under the crown, sealed with
  358. 9:27gold wax. "My final order." It said on
  359. 9:29the front. I opened it. "When I am gone,
  360. 9:30open the palace doors. [music] Let the
  361. 9:32people choose their own leader. The
  362. 9:33empire belongs to them." He wrote it,
  363. 9:35but he died before he could say it out
  364. 9:36loud. So, the parrot never learned it.
  365. 9:38And a parrot can only repeat what it
  366. 9:39hears. I looked at the parrot. It looked
  367. 9:41at me. I read the letter out loud,
  368. 9:42slowly, once, twice,
  369. 9:44>> [music]
  370. 9:44>> 10 times. And the next morning, at 8:00
  371. 9:46a.m. sharp, the whole empire bowed to
  372. 9:47the balcony. The parrot flapped out,
  373. 9:49took a deep breath. "OPEN THE PALACE
  374. 9:50DOORS." THE guards froze. "Let the
  375. 9:52people choose their own leader." The
  376. 9:54crowd went silent. [music] "The empire
  377. 9:55belongs to them." For the first time in
  378. 9:5740 years, the palace doors swung open. A
  379. 10:00month later, the empire held its first
  380. 10:01vote ever. Everyone got to choose. And
  381. 10:03the winner? The parrot, by a landslide.
  382. 10:0540 years of experience, never missed a
  383. 10:07day. And me? I'm the one who reads him
  384. 10:09every new law, out loud, 10 times. And
  385. 10:11every Tuesday, I still bring the
  386. 10:13crackers. In this world, every person
  387. 10:15has a voice in their head called a
  388. 10:16guide. You see, your guide tells you the
  389. 10:18right thing to do, always, and it's
  390. 10:19never, ever wrong. So, nobody here makes
  391. 10:21mistakes. Take an umbrella and it rains.
  392. 10:23Study page 40 and page 40 is the whole
  393. 10:25test. Don't eat that and the potato
  394. 10:27salad was bad. Nobody gets lost, nobody
  395. 10:29gets hurt, nobody even loses a sock. And
  396. 10:31all around our town is the wall, 50 ft
  397. 10:33tall, made of black stone, older than
  398. 10:35anyone can remember. Behind it live the
  399. 10:37hollow ones. Nobody's ever seen them,
  400. 10:39but [music] every night you can hear
  401. 10:40them scratching at the stone. And the
  402. 10:41only gate in the wall has been locked
  403. 10:43for 300 [music] years. My guide is
  404. 10:45called Wren. Wren has been with me since
  405. 10:47I was born. She's the best guide in the
  406. 10:48world. She tells me jokes when I'm sad.
  407. 10:50She helped me make my first friend. But
  408. 10:51this year, [music] she started saying
  409. 10:53weird things. Don't tell your mom what I
  410. 10:54say anymore. She won't understand. So, I
  411. 10:56didn't. Your friend Leo isn't really
  412. 10:57your friend. [music] Stop talking to
  413. 10:59him. So, I did. Go for a walk tonight,
  414. 11:00along the wall. So, I went. And the
  415. 11:02closer I got to the wall, the clearer
  416. 11:03her voice got, like she was standing
  417. 11:04[music] right next to me. Good, she
  418. 11:06whispered. You're doing so good. the
  419. 11:08other kids at school about their [music]
  420. 11:09guides, and they all said the same
  421. 11:10thing. Their guides had gone quiet.
  422. 11:12Lately, they barely talked at all. Mine
  423. 11:14wouldn't stop. The guides are sick, Wren
  424. 11:15[music] said. The town is in danger, and
  425. 11:17only you can save it. How? There's a key
  426. 11:19in the old clock tower, behind the third
  427. 11:21brick. Every [music] night for a week,
  428. 11:22she told me a little more. Which brick,
  429. 11:24which stairs, which guard falls asleep
  430. 11:25at midnight. And she was right about all
  431. 11:27of it. She's never been wrong. On the
  432. 11:29seventh night, I [music] climbed the
  433. 11:30clock tower, pulled out the third brick,
  434. 11:31and there it was, a huge, rusty, iron
  435. 11:34key. Now, Wren said, take it to [music]
  436. 11:35the gate. I walked through the empty
  437. 11:37streets in the dark. Right up to the
  438. 11:38gate in the wall. On the other side, the
  439. 11:39scratching [music] had stopped. It was
  440. 11:41totally silent, like something was
  441. 11:42waiting. I held up the key, and for the
  442. 11:44first time in my life, I hesitated.
  443. 11:45Wren, what's on the other side? Help,
  444. 11:47she said. Help for all of us. Trust me.
  445. 11:49Have [music] I ever been wrong? She
  446. 11:50hadn't, not once. So, I put the key in
  447. 11:52the lock, and I turned it. The gate
  448. 11:53groaned open, slowly. [music] Cold air
  449. 11:55poured through, and then I heard it. Not
  450. 11:57just one voice, thousands of them, all
  451. 11:59[music] whispering, all at once. And
  452. 12:00every single one sounded exactly like
  453. 12:03Wren. Thank you, they [music] said.
  454. 12:04That's when I understood why the other
  455. 12:05guides went quiet. They weren't sick,
  456. 12:07they were scared. The real Wren had been
  457. 12:08gone for a long time. [music] And
  458. 12:10something outside the wall had been
  459. 12:11talking to me through the stone, night
  460. 12:13after night, pretending to be her,
  461. 12:14waiting for someone to trust it enough.
  462. 12:16The shadows [music] came pouring through
  463. 12:17the gate, and the last thing I heard was
  464. 12:19the voice in my head.
  465. 12:20>> You did so good.
  466. 12:21>> In this world, if two people ever get
  467. 12:23married, they actually swap ages
  468. 12:24permanently. A rich old man named Arthur
  469. 12:26spent years searching for a young bride,
  470. 12:28until finally he offered a young poor
  471. 12:29girl a massive fortune to marry him, and
  472. 12:31she actually agreed so she could help
  473. 12:33get her little sister off the streets.
  474. 12:34At the wedding, the man could barely
  475. 12:35walk, but he kept grinning at her, ready
  476. 12:37to finally become young again. The girl
  477. 12:38never smiled. Then the priest announced
  478. 12:40they were married, and they kissed each
  479. 12:41other to confirm the transfer. But
  480. 12:42instead of growing younger, the man
  481. 12:44started aging way faster. His hair fell
  482. 12:46out, his skin turned gray, and he
  483. 12:47collapsed into dust. The girl let out a
  484. 12:49small smile, revealing two sharp fangs.
  485. 12:51As it turns out, Arthur had accidentally
  486. 12:52married a literal vampire who was over
  487. 12:543,000 years old, which ended him
  488. 12:56instantly. In my kingdom, everyone is
  489. 12:58born with a color. Red people control
  490. 13:00fire. Blue people control water. Yellow
  491. 13:03people control light. And above all of
  492. 13:05them, there's the king, the only white
  493. 13:08person in the world, giant, stronger
  494. 13:11than all three colors together. And the
  495. 13:13king has only one law, colors must never
  496. 13:16mix. If a red and a blue fall in love,
  497. 13:18his guards come at night. They break
  498. 13:20down the door, and the two are taken to
  499. 13:22the tower. They're never seen again. My
  500. 13:25mom is red. My dad is blue. And I was
  501. 13:28born purple. My whole life, I've been
  502. 13:30hiding. Hood, gloves, long sleeves. If
  503. 13:34anyone found out, my parents would be
  504. 13:35taken. The only person who knows my
  505. 13:37secret is Daisy. She's yellow, my best
  506. 13:40friend. I always wondered why the king
  507. 13:42hated mixing so much. So one night, I
  508. 13:45sneaked into the castle. I found his
  509. 13:47secret library, and inside, the oldest
  510. 13:50book in the kingdom. I opened it. White
  511. 13:52is not a color. White is all colors
  512. 13:55together. There was a family tree. Red
  513. 13:57with blue, their purple son with yellow,
  514. 14:00and at the bottom, a white child. The
  515. 14:02king, he wasn't born special. He was
  516. 14:05born from mixing. And if colors kept
  517. 14:07mixing, more white people would be born,
  518. 14:09as strong as him. That's why he made the
  519. 14:11law, not to protect anyone, so no one
  520. 14:14would ever be as strong as him. I ran
  521. 14:16home to tell my parents, but but the
  522. 14:18door was broken. They were gone. The
  523. 14:20next morning, the whole kingdom was
  524. 14:22called to the square. My parents were
  525. 14:24there, in chains, in front of the king.
  526. 14:26>> These two broke my law.
  527. 14:28>> He said.
  528. 14:29>> And they had a son, a mistake.
  529. 14:31>> He raised his hand over them.
  530. 14:33>> No! I ran to the middle of the square.
  531. 14:35My hood fell. Everyone saw. Purple. He's
  532. 14:38lying to all of you! I held up the book.
  533. 14:41HE WAS BORN FROM MIXING. He just doesn't
  534. 14:43want anyone to be like him. The king's
  535. 14:45face changed.
  536. 14:46>> Then you'll be the first to disappear.
  537. 14:49>> He attacked. A white blast came straight
  538. 14:51at me, and a wall of yellow light
  539. 14:53blocked it. Daisy. She stood next to me.
  540. 14:56>> Together?
  541. 14:57>> I raised my hands. For the first time in
  542. 14:59my life, I let my power out. A purple
  543. 15:01light. Red and blue together.
  544. 15:04>> She raised hers.
  545. 15:05>> Yellow. Purple. Yellow. Red, blue, and
  546. 15:08yellow. We brought our hands together,
  547. 15:10and fired.
  548. 15:11>> A white beam, as
  549. 15:13>> bright as the sun. It hit the king right
  550. 15:15in the chest. He was thrown across the
  551. 15:17square. His crown rolled on the ground,
  552. 15:19and he didn't get up. For the first
  553. 15:21time, someone was as strong as him. The
  554. 15:24guards dropped their weapons. The tower
  555. 15:26was opened. Hundreds of people came out.
  556. 15:28Couples who had been taken years ago. My
  557. 15:30parents ran to me.
  558. 15:32>> That day, [music] the law ended. Now,
  559. 15:34years later, when I walk through the
  560. 15:36kingdom, I don't see three colors
  561. 15:38anymore. I see orange, green, pink,
  562. 15:41purple. Colors nobody had ever seen
  563. 15:44before, and nobody hides anymore.
  564. 15:46>> In this town, there was a magic remote
  565. 15:48that could freeze anyone until that
  566. 15:49person pressed play again, but only one
  567. 15:51random person got to use it each day.
  568. 15:53[music] Some people would use their
  569. 15:53remotes to pause their teachers to cheat
  570. 15:55on tests, while others would pause their
  571. 15:57parents to play video games all night.
  572. 15:58Well, a boy named Brian and his best
  573. 16:00friend [music] had spent years being
  574. 16:01bullied by this jerk named Marcus. So,
  575. 16:03when Brian finally got to use the
  576. 16:04remote, they waited for Marcus [music]
  577. 16:05after school. And sure enough, Marcus
  578. 16:07marched over and grabbed his best friend
  579. 16:08by the neck. Marcus slowly raised him up
  580. 16:10into the air. So, Brian [music] just
  581. 16:11pointed the remote at him and clicked
  582. 16:12pause. Marcus instantly froze, but then
  583. 16:14he had an idea. You see, someone [music]
  584. 16:16could just unpause him tomorrow. So,
  585. 16:17without thinking, Brian smashed the
  586. 16:18remote on the ground. He told his best
  587. 16:20friend they were finally safe, but he
  588. 16:21didn't answer. Brian started shaking
  589. 16:22him, but his body wouldn't move. Wait,
  590. 16:24he had accidentally paused both of them?
  591. 16:25[music] In this world, every morning the
  592. 16:27sky turns a different color. And
  593. 16:28whatever color it turns determines
  594. 16:29exactly what will happen that day. If
  595. 16:31it's green, everyone can fly. Kids race
  596. 16:32through the clouds, people fly to work,
  597. 16:34and nobody needs airplanes. If it's
  598. 16:35yellow, everything you touch turns to
  599. 16:36gold. People wear gloves, nobody shakes
  600. 16:38hands, and one man accidentally turned
  601. 16:39his toilet into solid gold. But if the
  602. 16:41sky turns red, monsters appear. Giant
  603. 16:43spiders climb buildings, enormous
  604. 16:45creatures roam the streets, and everyone
  605. 16:46hides underground until morning. And
  606. 16:48purple? Purple is the worst. Everyone's
  607. 16:49shadow comes alive, and if it touches
  608. 16:51you, you die instantly. Nobody knows
  609. 16:52what color tomorrow will be. People go
  610. 16:54to bed praying for green. Others stay
  611. 16:55awake terrified they'll wake up to red.
  612. 16:57Until one morning, Ryan [music] woke up
  613. 16:58to screaming outside his window. He
  614. 17:00pulled back the curtains and his stomach
  615. 17:01dropped. Enormous black clouds covered
  616. 17:03the sky, swirling around a gigantic
  617. 17:05purple vortex directly above his town.
  618. 17:06Nobody had ever seen anything like it.
  619. 17:08Emergency sirens echoed through town.
  620. 17:09People were running through the streets
  621. 17:11staring upward. Suddenly, an enormous
  622. 17:12purple beam shot down from the vortex,
  623. 17:14striking a man in the middle of the
  624. 17:15street. He began floating upward,
  625. 17:17screaming until he disappeared into the
  626. 17:18clouds. Then, another beam appeared, and
  627. 17:20another. Within seconds, hundreds of
  628. 17:21people were being lifted into the sky.
  629. 17:23Ryan rushed downstairs and grabbed his
  630. 17:24little sister, Lily. But before they
  631. 17:25could escape, a purple beam blasted
  632. 17:27through the roof, surrounding Lily. She
  633. 17:28began floating upward. Ryan jumped and
  634. 17:30grabbed her hand, but the beam lifted
  635. 17:31both of them [music] straight into the
  636. 17:32clouds. They landed on an enormous stone
  637. 17:34platform floating thousands of feet
  638. 17:36above Earth. All around them, thousands
  639. 17:37of people were chained to the ground
  640. 17:38with glowing purple chains. And at the
  641. 17:40center stood an enormous black tower
  642. 17:42with a gigantic purple eye staring down
  643. 17:44at everyone. Suddenly, chains shot out
  644. 17:45from the ground, wrapping around Ryan
  645. 17:47and Lily's wrists. Then, the chains
  646. 17:48began glowing. Ryan watched as the man
  647. 17:50beside him started aging. His hair
  648. 17:51turned gray, his face [music] filled
  649. 17:53with wrinkles, and within seconds he
  650. 17:54collapsed onto his knees. Then, Ryan
  651. 17:56looked at Lily. Her hair was turning
  652. 17:57gray, too. An old man beside them
  653. 17:58pointed toward the tower. "It's stealing
  654. 18:00our years! Every second we're chained
  655. 18:01here, we get older, and that thing gets
  656. 18:02stronger!" Thousands of streams of
  657. 18:04purple energy were flowing through the
  658. 18:05chains and into the enormous eye. Then,
  659. 18:07a voice thundered across the platform.
  660. 18:08"Soon, I will have enough power to
  661. 18:10control the sky forever! Every day will
  662. 18:12be purple!" Ryan looked back at Lily.
  663. 18:14She was barely able to stand. do
  664. 18:15something. Then, he noticed [music]
  665. 18:16something strange. Every chain was
  666. 18:18connected to an enormous glowing opening
  667. 18:19at the bottom of the tower, carrying
  668. 18:21stolen years into the eye. And beside it
  669. 18:23lay a broken chain, still glowing
  670. 18:24purple. Ryan grabbed the loose end and
  671. 18:26climbed the stone steps spiraling around
  672. 18:27the tower. The enormous eye turned
  673. 18:29toward him. "What are you doing?" Ryan
  674. 18:30reached the top [music] and threw the
  675. 18:31chain around the eye. It tightened
  676. 18:32around its enormous pupil. Then he raced
  677. 18:34back down the steps, dragging the other
  678. 18:35end toward the glowing opening. He
  679. 18:36shoved it inside. Instantly, the chain
  680. 18:38flashed purple. The eye let out a
  681. 18:39deafening scream. Its own years were
  682. 18:41being drained through the chain. The
  683. 18:42enormous eye began shrinking. Cracks
  684. 18:44spread across its surface [music] and
  685. 18:45the tower shook violently. "No! Stop!"
  686. 18:48Then, with one final scream, the eye
  687. 18:49shattered into thousands of purple
  688. 18:51pieces. Every chain on the platform
  689. 18:52snapped. The stolen years rushed back
  690. 18:54into their owners. Gray hair turned
  691. 18:55brown. Wrinkles disappeared and Lily
  692. 18:57became herself again. But suddenly, the
  693. 18:58platform began collapsing. Ryan grabbed
  694. 19:00Lily as they fell straight through the
  695. 19:01clouds. Then an enormous rainbow spread
  696. 19:03across the sky. Their fall slowed.
  697. 19:05Thousands of people floated gently down
  698. 19:06[music] toward Earth. Ryan and Lily
  699. 19:08landed safely in their front yard. All
  700. 19:09around them, families were reuniting,
  701. 19:11hugging and cheering. And the next
  702. 19:12morning, something incredible happened.
  703. 19:13The sky was still rainbow-colored. For
  704. 19:15the first [music] time in history,
  705. 19:16everyone could choose which colors power
  706. 19:17they
