- 0:00Imagine,
- 0:02imagine standing besides a river and
- 0:04watching the water move. Leaves,
- 0:06branches, and anything lifeless are
- 0:08carried wherever the current takes them.
- 0:10But a living fish is different. It can
- 0:13turn, choose a direction, and even fight
- 0:16against the current. That is what the
- 0:18quote uh never forget that only dead
- 0:20fish swim with the stream means to me.
- 0:24It's not really about fish. It is about
- 0:28the danger of letting other people,
- 0:30popular opinions or uh the easiest path
- 0:33make our decisions for us. This quote uh
- 0:36teaches us three important lessons.
- 0:39Following the crowd can cost us our
- 0:41identity. Uh resistance is necessary for
- 0:46growth and independent thinking means
- 0:49making intentional choices. First,
- 0:52following the crowd is easy, but easy
- 0:55does not always mean right.
- 1:00People naturally want to fit in. We
- 1:03don't want to be judged, excluded, or
- 1:05seen as different.
- 1:08Because of that,
- 1:17it can be tempting to copy what everyone
- 1:20else is doing without asking whether it
- 1:22is actually good for us. Social media is
- 1:24a clear example.
- 1:27One person posts a certain opinion,
- 1:29lifestyle, or trend, and suddenly
- 1:32thousands of people repeat it. Some of
- 1:34those people may not even agree with it,
- 1:37but they are afraid of being the one
- 1:40person who questions it. They may hope
- 1:44uh or sorry, they may buy things they do
- 1:46not need, behave in ways that do not
- 1:49represent them, or uh pretend to believe
- 1:52something simply because it's popular.
- 1:55Over time, a person can lose track of
- 1:58what they truly believe because they are
- 2:00constantly adjusting themselves to uh
- 2:03match the herd.
- 2:05Uh the current may feel comfortable, but
- 2:08it may also carry uh us somewhere we
- 2:11never intended to go. Now that we
- 2:14understand the danger of blindly
- 2:16following others, the second lesson is
- 2:19that resistance is often where growth
- 2:21happens.
- 2:25In the gym, muscles do not become
- 2:27stronger by avoiding resistance. They
- 2:28become stronger because they are forced
- 2:30to work against weight. Life works in a
- 2:33similar way. Difficult classes,
- 2:36failures, uh criticism, and setbacks
- 2:41can feel like a strong current uh
- 2:43pushing against us, but they can also
- 2:45make us feel more capable. For me, uh
- 2:49this connects to pursuing a career in
- 2:51medicine. It would be easier to choose a
- 2:54path that requires less time, fewer
- 2:56difficult science classes, and less
- 2:58uncertainty. There may be moments where
- 3:01other people question that goal, or when
- 3:04one difficult class makes the entire
- 3:06thing feel impossible. However, choosing
- 3:09only what is easiest would not
- 3:11necessarily uh lead me to the life I
- 3:14actually want. And so swimming against
- 3:16the current does not guarantee success
- 3:18but it does develop discipline uh
- 3:21confidence and the ability to keep
- 3:23moving when uh life becomes difficult.
- 3:27Even when we fail the experience can
- 3:30make us stronger for the next challenge.
- 3:33The third lesson is that independent
- 3:36thinking does not mean disagreeing with
- 3:38everyone just to be different. A living
- 3:40fish can swim with the current too. The
- 3:43difference is that it is alive and
- 3:45choosing its direction. In the same way,
- 3:49we should not reject advice simply
- 3:50because it comes from others. We should
- 3:52listen, think carefully and then decide
- 3:55for ourselves. For example, imagine that
- 3:58somehow uh someone's friends encourage
- 4:01them to skip class or spend money
- 4:03irresponsibly or uh give up on a
- 4:06different or a difficult goal. The
- 4:08person has to decide when whether
- 4:10following those friends supports the
- 4:12future they actually want. Sometimes the
- 4:15popular choice is reasonable and
- 4:17sometimes it could be harmful.
- 4:20The point is to uh not oppose the crowd
- 4:24automatically but to avoid surrendering
- 4:27our judgment to it. Ultimately, this
- 4:31quote is a reminder to stay mentally
- 4:33alive and following the stream requires
- 4:36no effort but
- 4:38uh and no courage and no clear
- 4:40destination. Uh choosing our own
- 4:44direction may be harder but it gives
- 4:46meaning to eventually uh where we end
- 4:48up. We should be willing to question
- 4:51popular ideas and accept the resistance
- 4:54that could help us grow. And uh we
- 4:57should also make choices based on our
- 4:59values rather than uh pressure. Only
- 5:02dead fish swim with the stream does not
- 5:05tell us to be uh difficult for no
- 5:07reason. It tells us to uh be awake and
- 5:11intentional and have enough to uh and
- 5:14brave enough to uh control the direction
- 5:18of our lives.
