Impromptu Speech — Transcript

- 0:00Hello. I'm ready to start my
- 0:01presentation. And this is my flash card.
- 0:06Kind people have an air to them. They're
- 0:10generous. They're nice. They're funny.
- 0:12They [clears throat] have this aura
- 0:14around them. Whereas, if you look across
- 0:16the classroom and you see the grumpy
- 0:19person in the corner wearing their
- 0:20hoodie, you can expect a not so
- 0:24welcoming aura around them. Not that
- 0:27they're not a nice person. They're
- 0:29probably one of the funniest people
- 0:30you'll ever meet if you try and get to
- 0:32know them. It's just that people tend to
- 0:35gravitate towards kinder people than
- 0:38grumpier people. And that leads me to
- 0:40today's quote. You catch more flies with
- 0:43honey than with vinegar. There are
- 0:46multiple interpretations of this quote,
- 0:48but my personal interpretation is that
- 0:51kindness and respect will triumph over
- 0:54fear and intimidation.
- 0:57And I feel like growing up, we're taught
- 0:59the golden rule. Treat others the way
- 1:01you want to be treated. I hope that the
- 1:04kindness that I give out to the world
- 1:06will be received and someone else's
- 1:08kindness will be received by me. And one
- 1:11historical figure that reminds me of
- 1:13this is Abraham Lincoln. I feel like
- 1:16most of us view Abraham Lincoln in a
- 1:20positive light with his actions. And one
- 1:23of his quotes is kindness is the only
- 1:26service that will stand the storm of
- 1:28life and not wash out. In an era in an
- 1:32era of military regimen when the country
- 1:35was divided, it was common that soldiers
- 1:38who ran away would be shot for defecting
- 1:42against the US.
- 1:44However, Abraham Lincoln did not like
- 1:47this rule. In fact, he had so much
- 1:50empathy for these people because they
- 1:52ran because they were scared, not that
- 1:54they didn't want to serve. And in his
- 1:58compassion, he tried to pardon as much
- 2:01of these people as possible with an
- 2:03executive order. And I feel like that
- 2:06showed that kindness in his heart worked
- 2:09out more because now we see him in a
- 2:11positive light.
- 2:13One other person that isn't a historical
- 2:16figure but is a pop figure that shows
- 2:19that kindness triumphs over um fear is
- 2:25Dolly Parton in her philanthrop
- 2:27philanthropic
- 2:29um activities. In 2017, she donated $1
- 2:34million to a children's hospital out of
- 2:38the honor of her niece who survived
- 2:41leukemia. And again, she donated another
- 2:45million in 2022. On top of that, she
- 2:50also donated and raised $700,000
- 2:54to
- 2:56Mid Tennessee residents who were
- 2:59fighting and a flood. Many of these
- 3:02homes got destroyed. And the most
- 3:04important aspect to take from this flood
- 3:08in Dolly's acts of kindness is that
- 3:11after these residents got recuperated
- 3:14and they were fine with the donation,
- 3:18they reached out to Dolly. They asked,
- 3:20"What can we do to help you? How can we
- 3:23support you? Thank you so much for your
- 3:25contributions to the flood effort." And
- 3:29the biggest takeaway is that Dolly's
- 3:31acts of kindness was received and then
- 3:34the people, the residents who obviously
- 3:37just went through something traumatic
- 3:39are still trying to help. That's because
- 3:42kindness will be given back. And one
- 3:45last historical figure that showed that
- 3:49kindness truly triumphs overall is
- 3:52Princess Diana.
- 3:54She approached problems with generosity
- 3:57and empathy than fear. And one of her
- 4:01one of her
- 4:04main events was the AIDS campaign or
- 4:10the event in which she went to a
- 4:13hospital and she shook hands and hugged
- 4:16um patients who had AIDS. And in doing
- 4:20so, she helped get rid of the stigma, or
- 4:23at least she was one of the people who
- 4:24helped get rid of the stigma that people
- 4:27with AIDS can't give you the disease via
- 4:32via touch. And this really helped these
- 4:36people in
- 4:39them not being ostracized because the
- 4:41stigma behind PE um people who had AIDS,
- 4:45they were shunned. They were pushed away
- 4:49and they were viewed as infectious. But
- 4:52Diana with her popularity
- 4:55decided to show the world something
- 4:58different. She gave these people
- 5:00compassion when they have only received
- 5:03hatred. And in doing so, people have
- 5:08shifted their opinions about people with
- 5:10AIDS.
- 5:11And to end off this speech with our
- 5:16quote, you catch more flies with honey
- 5:19than with vinegar. I will end this
- 5:21speech with a quote from Princess Diana.
- 5:24Carry out random acts of kindness with
- 5:26no expectation of reward. Safe in
- 5:29knowledge that one day someone might do
- 5:31the same for you. Thank you for
- 5:33listening.
