If YOU Take Vitamin D, You NEED To See This — Transcript

- 0:00I want to go back to Madeline. So, my
- 0:02question was because the research that
- 0:04I'm reading says that vitamin D does not
- 0:06cause trigger or create a B vitamin
- 0:07deficiency.
- 0:08>> No, it's not in the literature except my
- 0:10article.
- 0:12>> Taking vitamin D supplements will not
- 0:14drain your
- 0:15your body's B vitamins.
- 0:17>> Let me read my my title. Vitamin D
- 0:19deficiency changes the intestinal
- 0:21microbiome reducing B vitamin production
- 0:24in the gut. The resulting lack of
- 0:26pantothenic acid adversely affects the
- 0:28immune system producing a
- 0:29pro-inflammatory state associated with
- 0:31atherosclerosis and autoimmunity. This
- 0:34is a brand new discovery
- 0:36made by someone who's not a scientist,
- 0:39who's not working in the primary lab,
- 0:41who is a clinician, and the impact of
- 0:44this
- 0:46is only as strong as I can get the the
- 0:50ideas out there and talk about what
- 0:53happened to my patients. Now,
- 0:55>> Is it Is it plausible that there's a
- 0:57sort of a intermediary link
- 1:00um between the two? I'm reading some
- 1:02things here that say people are very
- 1:04frequently both low in vitamin D and
- 1:05vitamin B12 at the same time, and this
- 1:07is because they share the same root
- 1:08cause like a poor gut absorption, aging,
- 1:10or a restrictive diet, not because one
- 1:12vitamin is destroying the other.
- 1:15>> That's what we've been told.
- 1:18We've also been told that old people
- 1:19don't need as much sleep, and that old
- 1:22people get a bad gut as they get old.
- 1:25It is my belief now that it is
- 1:28there is an absolute link between the
- 1:30production of D. And I don't have the
- 1:32articles for this even though this is
- 1:34dogma at the moment. That our production
- 1:36of vitamin D goes down as we get older.
- 1:39So, if you look back to that person who
- 1:41was 75, who didn't get sick until they
- 1:44were 75,
- 1:47their skin production, even though
- 1:49they're still out there with their truck
- 1:50farm and still raising their own food,
- 1:52their skin production rate of vitamin D
- 1:54goes down, and this is probably true for
- 1:56every animal.
- 1:58And then, as their D goes low, they lose
- 2:00their microbiome, and then they die of
- 2:03one of the multiple diseases that are
- 2:04linked to this multiple deficiency
- 2:06state. It's a different lens to look
- 2:09through that says
- 2:12there is actually
- 2:14a system that allowed us to live without
- 2:16medical problems that weren't either
- 2:19related to epidemics of childhood
- 2:22illness or starving to death. And as
- 2:25long as we had good diets, you can
- 2:27actually look at 1945 to about 1985 and
- 2:29say, "What was the ideal for the humans
- 2:32that lived rurally in the United States?
- 2:34Did they live to be 75 years old and
- 2:37then get diseases?"
- 2:39So, it's my claim that those people
- 2:40didn't go to the doctor cuz there
- 2:42weren't any around them.
- 2:44And then, things started to happen to
- 2:46them. Then, instead of looking at it
- 2:48through the lens of this disease means
- 2:51this drug,
- 2:52then instead, we say we should pre-
- 2:55preventing this by paying attention to
- 2:57what vitamin D does in the body
- 2:59and what the B's do in the body.
- 3:02And ultimately,
- 3:06that is linked to most of our diseases.
- 3:08>> Okay, so I'll read the conclusion of
- 3:10your study here, which was published in
- 3:112016. I hypothesize, and it's important
- 3:14to say this is a hypothesis, that the
- 3:15parallel epidemics of abnormal sleep and
- 3:18abnormal intestinal microbiome are
- 3:20linked to one another through vitamin D
- 3:22deficiency. Proper supplementation doses
- 3:25of vitamin D plus all eight B vitamins
- 3:27appears to return the intestinal
- 3:28microbiome to normal in 3 months.
- 3:31Reinstating the normal microbiome not
- 3:33only treats IBS symptoms, it returns the
- 3:34supply of vitamin
- 3:37B's to their natural daily doses. The B
- 3:40vitamins are neither good for us nor
- 3:41unnecessary. They are good for the
- 3:43person who needs them and only until the
- 3:45normal source picks up again. Both sleep
- 3:48disruption and pain can be caused by
- 3:49large doses of B vitamins once the
- 3:52intestinal microbiome has returned to
- 3:53normal. The B vitamins are very
- 3:56biologically intertwined both in their
- 3:58intestinal production and cellulose
- 4:00cellular use. This suggests that B
- 4:02vitamins aside from B12 were not meant
- 4:04to be used individually and returning to
- 4:06restorative sleep with normal supply of
- 4:08the building blocks of cellular repair
- 4:10has the potential to repair the
- 4:12pro-inflammatory state seen in
- 4:14association with atherosclerosis.
- 4:18>> Atherosclerosis.
- 4:19>> As well as the hyperandrogenic
- 4:22state of associated with hypertension,
- 4:24heart disease, and stroke. It appears
- 4:25that given the proper essential elements
- 4:27for normal sleep, the body is designed
- 4:29to repair every physical injury that
- 4:31occurs during normal daily use and may
- 4:33even retain a memory of long deferred
- 4:35repairs. So, essentially you're saying
- 4:37that um
- 4:39if you can return the body's vitamin D
- 4:42and and B levels to normal,
- 4:45then the body will kick back up and
- 4:46start producing
- 4:48the um
- 4:50everything it needs. But, I guess the
- 4:52scientific consensus at the moment is
- 4:54saying that there's not a
- 4:55link between vitamin D
- 4:58and a vitamin B Well, it's saying that
- 5:00vitamin D does not cause a vitamin B
- 5:02deficiency.
- 5:03>> Correct.
- 5:04>> And you disagree with that.
- 5:05>> Absolutely.
- 5:06>> And could it be the case that
- 5:08there's some intermediary link? I e. If
- 5:10I take
- 5:11if I take lots of vitamin D, it disrupts
- 5:14my magnesium production and the
- 5:17magnesium production is having an impact
- 5:18on vitamin B and could it be the case
- 5:20that it's something else?
- 5:21>> Yes, of course.
- 5:24>> Okay.
- 5:25>> And in fact, it's way more complicated
- 5:28than you and I have talked about.
- 5:30And where you finally arrive is actually
- 5:33at coenzyme A deficiency.
- 5:36And that is a very important chemical.
- 5:39It runs our mitochondrial health and our
- 5:42ability to make energy and it's linked
- 5:45to all the
- 5:46degenerative
- 5:47diseases, so
- 5:49it's not that
- 5:52I don't understand the
- 5:55idea that once you're a hammer
- 5:57everything's a nail, because that's what
- 5:59I was told by all of my colleagues that
- 6:02you're trying to explain everything.
- 6:04It's that I saw Madeline go back to work
- 6:08and we haven't even talked about what
- 6:09happened to Natalie.
- 6:10>> What happened to Natalie?
- 6:11>> Natalie got better and actually
- 6:14>> How?
- 6:15>> She first with the D, like most of the
- 6:18patients, she started to sleep better,
- 6:20but at the end of two years she stopped
- 6:22sleeping better.
- 6:24She actually lost weight, which was the
- 6:26case with several of the women that were
- 6:28postpartum who had complained about
- 6:30that.
- 6:31So in some my interpretation was in
- 6:34someone who's less affected than
- 6:36Madeline was, the D B50 combination,
- 6:39especially in the setting of being after
- 6:42the pregnancy, is really all somebody
- 6:44who was relatively normal at the start
- 6:47of their life needs.
- 6:49And then she got better,
- 6:51her antidepressant went away, her
- 6:54postpartum depression cleared, her high
- 6:57heart rate. So the other thing that we
- 6:58didn't mention is many of these women
- 7:00who are very interested in exercise and
- 7:03doing exercise had high heart rates of
- 7:05110 or above sitting quietly and had not
- 7:09been like that before. Their high heart
- 7:11rates come down.
- 7:12So she came back to being her normal
- 7:15self again.
- 7:16>> And did she have to come off the vitamin
- 7:18B?
- 7:18>> She only took it for three months.
- 7:20>> Okay, and she
- 7:21>> And then she did a multivitamin and then
- 7:23eventually almost everybody needs to be
- 7:25off the multivitamin completely. It is
- 7:27my belief that if all of this happened
- 7:30spontaneously in every other animal on
- 7:32the planet
- 7:34then we shouldn't have to take
- 7:35supplements either. The squirrels are
- 7:37not going to GNC to buy supplements.
- 7:40That means if there's a mistake made,
- 7:43like we move indoors and we give back
- 7:46what is needed to get the normal
- 7:48microbiome,
- 7:50then you should assume that your body
- 7:53will go back to supporting itself.
- 7:56>> And Natalie is she's good again?
- 7:58>> Natalie is back to being
- 8:00a triathlete and doing great.
- 8:02>> If we zoom out for a second, what is the
- 8:04advice you'll give to all of my
- 8:06listeners now? There might be millions
- 8:07of them all over the world, some of
- 8:08which are struggling with sleep. Some of
- 8:10them just want to you know, optimize
- 8:11their sleep a little bit. What is the
- 8:12the over overarching advice? The thing
- 8:14that all of them could could do to make
- 8:16sure they sleep better in your view?
- 8:18>> One, do the behavioral cognitive stuff
- 8:20first. Make the blackout curtains, do
- 8:22the whole thing.
- 8:24If you haven't done that with the eye
- 8:26cover,
- 8:28then go ahead and do that. And if that's
- 8:29all you need, do not mess around with
- 8:32supplements.
- 8:34Two, if you've already done the
- 8:36behavioral changes,
- 8:38then go to my website, read about the
- 8:41ideas, or listen to this podcast and see
- 8:44whether or not the ideas there feel like
- 8:47they apply to you.
- 8:49>> You've come up with this protocol called
- 8:50the right sleep protocol. What is that?
- 8:53And can you walk me through it?
- 8:54>> Sure. So, the right sleep program is
- 8:58a process of taking your D to a certain
- 9:00level,
- 9:02supplementing B12 if your B12 is at a
- 9:04certain level below a certain level,
- 9:07taking B50 for 3 months,
- 9:10and then taking a multivitamin.
- 9:12And that is until your body says, "Gee,
- 9:15I might need more
- 9:17B's."
- 9:19This is a diagram
- 9:21and you have a beautiful stepwise
- 9:24a visual assist here.
- 9:26The first
- 9:273 months, if your B12 is low, you will
- 9:30take B12 as a separate supplement. And
- 9:32keep in mind there's a lot to be learned
- 9:34about multivitamins. For instance,
- 9:37many multivitamins say multivitamin on
- 9:39the front, but they actually have the
- 9:41equivalent of B50 in them.
- 9:44They have 50 mg of all these B vitamins.
- 9:47In fact, if you go to an expensive
- 9:48vitamin store, they put up the doses of
- 9:51B's.
- 9:52The doses of these vitamins are
- 9:54extremely important for the way you feel
- 9:57every day.
- 9:59If you get it right, you feel energetic,
- 10:01perky, and wonderful all day. If you get
- 10:02it wrong, you feel awful in the same way
- 10:04you did before. You have to look at the
- 10:06back. You have to learn some of the name
- 10:07of these vitamins. Most people are not
- 10:09that interested in that. If you want to
- 10:11get better, that's what you have to do.
- 10:13So, the first step is you're taking all
- 10:15four of these, then
- 10:18in the second step,
- 10:20for a period of usually 3 to 4 months,
- 10:24you're still taking B12 if you were B12
- 10:26deficient.
- 10:28You're still taking vitamin D, and
- 10:29you're adjusting your vitamin D dosing
- 10:32based on recommendations based on your D
- 10:34levels that you're doing every month,
- 10:36and I show you how to get them done
- 10:38properly because the vitamin D levels
- 10:40that your doctor is doing are not
- 10:42accurate, unfortunately, nor do they
- 10:44know that or care.
- 10:46And you're still taking a multivitamin.
- 10:49Then,
- 10:50>> [clears throat]
- 10:50>> after the 3 months that are depicted
- 10:54here,
- 10:55it turns out if your sleep is much
- 10:58better,
- 11:00you will actually get to a place
- 11:02where
- 11:04your body will stop sleeping well again.
- 11:08And it turns out that your brain is
- 11:10asking for more
- 11:12additional B's.
- 11:13The basic bottom line is the sleep is a
- 11:16thing that once you learn how to use it,
- 11:19and once you learn the concept that
- 11:22if in the third or fourth month of this
- 11:24program, my sleep gets much better,
- 11:28and then in the sixth month it gets
- 11:30worse again, what you should take from
- 11:32that is my brain really knows how to do
- 11:35this. It was able to get me to sleep
- 11:38from 10:00 to 6:00 with one brief wake
- 11:41up,
- 11:42went back to sleep, didn't get up to
- 11:43pee, and I have no pain when I wake up,
- 11:45and I feel energetic all day long. It
- 11:48knows how to do that.
- 11:49When it doesn't do it again 2 months
- 11:52later, the message is not, "Oh man, I
- 11:55knew it wouldn't work cuz everything
- 11:57else I've tried didn't work." Instead,
- 11:59it means
- 12:00what my brain is asking for is something
- 12:03else. Then,
- 12:05you address that.
- 12:08On my website, I also have multiple
- 12:11videos of Q&As addressing questions
- 12:14like, "I'm in the fifth month and this
- 12:17happened to me, etc."
- 12:19So, what I would give as advice is one,
- 12:22supplementation is only good for you if
- 12:25there's something wrong with you that
- 12:27you're trying to correct.
- 12:30Two, keep a log of what happens to that
- 12:33thing
- 12:34because we tend to forget. All my
- 12:36headache patients forget that they had
- 12:38headaches when they go away. That's
- 12:40challenging to a clinician cuz they come
- 12:43back and they say, "Yeah, I still have
- 12:45headaches." And then their husband says,
- 12:47"Wait, we were in Vegas
- 12:492 weeks ago and you said we didn't you
- 12:50didn't have any headaches at all."
- 12:52And she says, "Oh, I know, but they're
- 12:54back now." We view it as it should have
- 12:56fixed me and now it hasn't. This is a
- 12:58different belief system where the answer
- 13:01is your brain is asking you for
- 13:03something. Interpreting what it's asking
- 13:05for is difficult but possible.
- 13:07>> So, number one was
- 13:10>> If you do not have something wrong with
- 13:12you, do not mess with supplements,
- 13:14especially D.
- 13:15>> Number two is keep a log.
- 13:17>> read more, think about it. Think about
- 13:19it a little bit. Think about whether or
- 13:21not there things that are bothering you.
- 13:22>> Okay. Number three
- 13:24>> Number three is if there's something
- 13:25bothering you, then decide you're
- 13:27actually going to take some time
- 13:30and you're going to learn about a system
- 13:32which allows you to give supplements
- 13:34that lets your body be fully replete,
- 13:38which means fills up all the
- 13:39deficiencies, and that your final
- 13:42outcome will be great sleep, great
- 13:45repair, and you will be doing things
- 13:48that will allow your body to prevent
- 13:51degenerative illness.
- 13:52>> Why don't you just, you know, why don't
- 13:53I just, instead of taking supplements,
- 13:55will be this, be that, be the other D,
- 13:57whatever. Why don't I just go outside in
- 14:00the sun and have a better diet?
- 14:02>> I think that's a great
- 14:05question, and
- 14:06here's the problem.
- 14:08>> So, I've got, you know, I've got all
- 14:08these things, these wonderful things
- 14:10here.
- 14:11I've got
- 14:12I've got some kimchi, which is good for
- 14:14the gut microbiome, I've heard. I've got
- 14:16kombucha.
- 14:17I've got, uh,
- 14:18some yogurt thing here. I've got, I
- 14:20don't even pronounce that.
- 14:21>> Sauerkraut.
- 14:21>> Sauerkraut.
- 14:22And I've got some kefir. Why don't I
- 14:24just
- 14:25have all this stuff, which is great for
- 14:27my gut microbiome, and then go outside
- 14:29and spend spend the morning in the
- 14:31sunshine getting up improving my vitamin
- 14:32D levels. Presumably, this is going to
- 14:34help my gut, and the sunshine is going
- 14:36to help my vitamin D. Voilà.
- 14:38>> I think you could actually do that. If
- 14:40there's not much wrong with you, I think
- 14:42that's the better path, frankly.
- 14:45Supplementing with vitamin D is not the
- 14:47same as being outdoors. Okay, explain
- 14:50that to me.
- 14:51>> What do you mean it's not the same? How
- 14:52is it different? Cuz my doctor did a
- 14:54blood test recently, and, uh, I did two
- 14:56blood tests. One at Nico Health, #had a
- 14:57#investor.
- 14:59Um, Nico Health, and
- 15:01the Nico Health test that I did said I
- 15:03was vitamin D deficient, which doesn't
- 15:05surprise me cuz I live in this dark
- 15:06bunker.
- 15:08I don't I never leave the DriveTribe
- 15:09studio. People just walk in, and I live
- 15:10in here, and I eat in here, and I
- 15:12But I'm vitamin D deficient, it said.
- 15:14So, I went to the store, and I just
- 15:15started taking vitamin D. I assume
- 15:16that's fixed it.
- 15:18Why is vitamin D supplementation
- 15:20different from being out in the sun?
- 15:22>> There is a lot of literature about by a
- 15:24gal named Stephanie Seneff who says that
- 15:27the vitamin D that we make on our skin
- 15:29skin is sulfated, which is different
- 15:31than the vitamin D we're taking as
- 15:33supplemented.
- 15:34And it has a different behavior in the
- 15:36body. Number two, it turns out there's a
- 15:38lot of literature that shows that
- 15:40vitamin D is not the only thing made by
- 15:42UVB hitting your your skin. And what
- 15:44it's hitting is cholesterol.
- 15:46And that cholesterol is changed in this
- 15:48chemical called D 3.
- 15:51But there are
- 15:52probably 15, 20 other chemicals that are
- 15:55being made at the same time.
- 15:58>> Okay.
- 15:58>> They are not being taken with that pill
- 16:00of vitamin D3. That is a separate
- 16:03literature that's just gotten really
- 16:06some attention in the last 10 years.
- 16:08There are all these other things that
- 16:10prevent inflammation, that do things to
- 16:13your skin, that were actually being made
- 16:16by the sunlight that you're being
- 16:18exposed to, that protects you from the
- 16:20damaging effects.
- 16:22>> So why can't someone who is really
- 16:23struggling with their sleep, why can't
- 16:25the prescription just be
- 16:27improve your your diet?
- 16:29>> Have you tried that with patients where
- 16:30you said you've not?
- 16:32>> One of the reasons why these are
- 16:34effective
- 16:35>> The the the
- 16:36>> the fermented foods, okay? Fermented
- 16:39food means you're eating rotting food.
- 16:43That's not the way we call it because it
- 16:45sounds disgusting, okay? But bacteria
- 16:48are growing in here
- 16:50>> Yeah.
- 16:50>> and they're secreting things like B
- 16:52vitamins and reuteri. They're making a
- 16:55yeast bacterial mixture. So there's
- 16:57fungus growing in there, there are
- 16:59viruses in there, there are many
- 17:01microbes.
- 17:02>> Microbes.
- 17:02>> Microbes, thank you.
- 17:03>> Huh, look at me.
- 17:06Look at you.
- 17:06>> You're awesome. That means you're eating
- 17:08bacteria. You're basically eating a food
- 17:11that has to be 50 in it.
- 17:13>> Which is great.
- 17:14>> Yeah. So
- 17:15>> So why don't you give that to your pa-
- 17:16>> Because I have no idea what the time
- 17:18frame will be for this having that
- 17:21success for you. This is the easy way.
- 17:24This is the fast way. This is the way I
- 17:26can tell you that I've had more
- 17:28experience with my clients over time.
- 17:31And if you want to fix something that's
- 17:33really badly off, by the time you get a
- 17:35sleep disorder
- 17:36>> that can't see cuz they're just
- 17:37listening on audio, you're pointing at
- 17:38the vitamins.
- 17:39>> I'm pointing at the vitamins and the
- 17:41step-wise approach which is right there.
- 17:43>> and easy approach.
- 17:44>> Exactly. And if you don't want to use
- 17:46supplements, I would support you all the
- 17:48way.
- 17:49>> In doing what?
- 17:50>> In going outside, just what you
- 17:52described. I think the healthier
- 17:54approach to all of our diseases is to be
- 17:58outside much more and to include these
- 18:02fermented foods.
- 18:03>> Now on this point of being outside much
- 18:04more, some people live in cloudy places,
- 18:06you know, I spent a lot of my life
- 18:07living in places like London in the UK.
- 18:09And there's not much sunlight.
- 18:11>> Right.
- 18:11>> So what do I do about that?
- 18:12>> Remember how I said that Madeleine was a
- 18:14redhead?
- 18:15>> Yeah.
- 18:16>> That turns out to be important. So
- 18:18melanin is the pigment that humans have
- 18:21in their skin.
- 18:22>> [clears throat]
- 18:22>> You have more than I do. I put more
- 18:24melanin as I stay out in the sun more
- 18:27and I tan.
- 18:28>> Mhm.
- 18:28>> [clears throat]
- 18:29>> That melanin is absorbing energy. It's
- 18:31there to protect you from overexposure
- 18:34to sunlight and damaging effects on the
- 18:37DNA of your skin.
- 18:39The redhead gene usually comes with
- 18:41freckles, which means that there is only
- 18:43little tiny parts of the skin that have
- 18:45melanin.
- 18:47And the redhead gene came about in the
- 18:49far north Viking Scotland.
- 18:53And those places don't get much
- 18:56sunlight. That means it cleared out the
- 18:58blocker
- 19:00of the thing that collected that energy
- 19:03and allowed people who lived in very
- 19:06overcast environments to make D because
- 19:09the melanin didn't block the conversion
- 19:12to vitamin D and all these other things
- 19:13that it does.
- 19:14>> So, redheads actually have a bit of a
- 19:15superpower when it comes to their
- 19:17relationship with the sunshine. They can
- 19:19make significantly more.
- 19:20>> That depends. Now, if you pick up all
- 19:22the Scotsmen
- 19:24and you put them in Texas and Oklahoma,
- 19:27which is where I live,
- 19:28and many of the people there
- 19:30have red hair and they came from
- 19:32Scotsmen. The problem is they're now in
- 19:34an environment with very high sun
- 19:37levels. It's very hot in the summer. And
- 19:40they cannot tolerate the level of sun.
- 19:43That means if you get to a point on the
- 19:45world where you pick up big populations
- 19:47and you move them into another weather
- 19:49type, they have not had enough time to
- 19:51adapt. There are things about melanin
- 19:53amounts
- 19:55and our survival that make a difference.
- 19:58So, I still recommend that supplementing
- 20:01with D is not the whole answer.
- 20:04Supplementation in and of itself is not
- 20:06what we want. What we want is our kids
- 20:08to be outside much more. There are now
- 20:10new learning environments for kids where
- 20:13they're out in the forests,
- 20:15where they're not enclosed in
- 20:17schoolrooms.
