- 0:00Healing starts when you focus on the
- 0:02feeling, not the person.
- 0:04And you focus on how you can give
- 0:06yourself that feeling without that
- 0:09person. How you can create that emotion
- 0:12and that experience for yourself that
- 0:14you deserve without that person. That
- 0:17you can find that connection with
- 0:20yourself and others
- 0:22without that person.
- 0:24When you think
- 0:26that that person is more powerful than
- 0:28an experience or an emotion,
- 0:30you will never be able to let go. The
- 0:33number one health and wellness podcast.
- 0:36Jay Shetty. Jay Shetty. The one, the
- 0:38only, Jay Shetty.
- 0:42Hey everyone, welcome back to On
- 0:43Purpose. It's Jay Shetty, your host. If
- 0:46you haven't subscribed yet, please do.
- 0:48It will mean the world to me and make
- 0:50sure you never miss out on an upload. If
- 0:53you've recently gone through a breakup
- 0:55or you've been through a breakup maybe
- 0:57even a couple of years ago, but it's
- 0:59still affecting you, this video is for
- 1:02you. So many people I know right now
- 1:04have been dumped, broken up with,
- 1:07disconnected, and it's started to affect
- 1:09their self-esteem. If you've ever
- 1:12questioned your value after a breakup,
- 1:14if you've ever questioned whether you're
- 1:15worthy of love, if you've ever
- 1:17questioned whether you'll ever find
- 1:19love,
- 1:20don't skip this video.
- 1:22I want to start off by talking to you
- 1:24about what you actually miss. Because
- 1:27I'm sure your mind is coming up with all
- 1:29sorts of things. Like you miss the text
- 1:32in the morning. You miss the
- 1:33conversation before you went to bed. You
- 1:36miss the dates you went out on. And it's
- 1:38really interesting because when you're
- 1:39focusing on everything you miss, you
- 1:42actually miss that you have forgotten
- 1:44all the bad times. Right? You miss the
- 1:47moments that they treated you badly. And
- 1:50I don't mean you miss them like you want
- 1:51them back. You miss them as in you
- 1:52completely forget they existed. But
- 1:55here's the real thing you miss.
- 1:57You don't miss them. You miss who you
- 2:00thought you'd be with them. It's one of
- 2:03the hardest truths to face that you can
- 2:06love someone deeply, lose them, and
- 2:09still feel stuck long after the story
- 2:12ends. You tell yourself, "I should be
- 2:14over this by now." But the memories
- 2:17still show up. The song, the scent, the
- 2:20old photo, and suddenly you're right
- 2:23back there again. Today, I want to talk
- 2:26about what to do when you just can't get
- 2:29over your ex. Not from judgement, but
- 2:32from understanding.
- 2:33Because what you're feeling isn't
- 2:35weakness, it's actually wiring.
- 2:38Let's get into it. I want to start by
- 2:40talking to you about why you can't let
- 2:42go. Because I'm sure you've experienced
- 2:44it, whether you're scrolling through
- 2:45their social media, whether you're
- 2:47checking in with a friend of a friend
- 2:48who still knows that person, whether you
- 2:51still walk past their workplace just to
- 2:54see how they are, what's going on,
- 2:56whether you're someone who just can't
- 2:58stop looking at your old pictures with
- 3:00them, your old memories. When we fall in
- 3:03love, our brains release dopamine and
- 3:06oxytocin, the same chemicals tied to
- 3:09addiction. That's why a breakup doesn't
- 3:12just hurt emotionally, it hurts
- 3:14physically. You're in a withdrawal from
- 3:17a person.
- 3:18But what really keeps you stuck isn't
- 3:21just the chemistry.
- 3:22It's identity. For months or years, you
- 3:25weren't just you.
- 3:27You were us. Your plans, routines, even
- 3:31your sense of self were intertwined with
- 3:34theirs. It was never about you. It was
- 3:37about both of you.
- 3:38It was never just about you, it was
- 3:40about us. It was never just about you,
- 3:43it was about we. So when they leave, it
- 3:46doesn't just feel like losing a person.
- 3:49It feels like losing your reflection.
- 3:52You start chasing closure. But what you
- 3:55really want is a confirmation that you
- 3:58mattered. That that version of you feels
- 4:02still alive, but without them.
- 4:05You've almost mirrored so many of their
- 4:07chemicals that that part of you that
- 4:10chases that that wants that still
- 4:11exists, but the relationship doesn't
- 4:14exist anymore.
- 4:15Maybe you replay every conversation,
- 4:18every choice, searching for the moment
- 4:21it could have gone differently. I know
- 4:23so many people who think back and say,
- 4:25"No, it was this moment. It was the
- 4:27moment that I started to carve out time
- 4:31for myself. You know what? It was this
- 4:33moment when I told them I didn't like it
- 4:35when they did that. That was the moment
- 4:37I pushed them away. You know, it was the
- 4:38moment where I talked to them about
- 4:40their ex-girlfriend that made me feel
- 4:41insecure. That was the moment they
- 4:43walked away."
- 4:45You start creating stories. You start
- 4:48creating reasons. You start creating
- 4:50meaning that actually doesn't exist.
- 4:54That you have no fact
- 4:56to validate from or verify from.
- 4:58That's not healing. That's your mind
- 5:01trying to rewrite a story that it
- 5:04doesn't want to end. Here's the truth
- 5:06about breakups. We don't get addicted to
- 5:08people. We get addicted to how we felt
- 5:12around them. How we felt wanted, seen,
- 5:15and chosen. And now that they're gone,
- 5:18your brain is chasing that feeling, not
- 5:21the person. It's fascinating that we
- 5:23think we're chasing the person back, but
- 5:26really we're chasing the feeling back.
- 5:28And that's why it's so important to go
- 5:30and find something else that gives you
- 5:32that feeling from yourself, your
- 5:34friends, community, connection. Because
- 5:37that feeling is something that should
- 5:38belong to you. Being seen is beautiful.
- 5:42Being wanted is beautiful. Being chosen
- 5:44is beautiful.
- 5:45But if it's dependent on one person and
- 5:47one person alone that isn't any longer
- 5:50there, then that isn't your person.
- 5:53If you want to start letting go after a
- 5:55breakup, ask yourself,
- 5:57"What part of me felt most alive in that
- 6:00relationship?
- 6:01And how can I give that back to myself
- 6:04now?"
- 6:05That's where healing starts. Healing
- 6:08starts when you focus on the feeling,
- 6:11not the person.
- 6:12And you focus on how you can give
- 6:14yourself that feeling without that
- 6:16person.
- 6:17>> [snorts]
- 6:17>> How you can create that emotion and that
- 6:20experience for yourself that you deserve
- 6:23without that person. That you can find
- 6:26that connection with yourself and others
- 6:30without that person.
- 6:32When you think
- 6:34that that person is more powerful than
- 6:36an experience or an emotion,
- 6:38you will never be able to let go.
- 6:41That emotion is something you
- 6:42experienced.
- 6:44It's something that came through you and
- 6:46out of you.
- 6:48It still exists within you. You just
- 6:50have to find the right spark to
- 6:52rediscover it. You just have to
- 6:54reconnect with that part of you that
- 6:56felt so alive, that felt so connected,
- 6:59because it's already within you. It's
- 7:00yours. You felt it.
- 7:02You felt it. One thing we mistake is we
- 7:05think other people make us feel things.
- 7:08No, other people push buttons and we
- 7:10feel what's inside of us.
- 7:12There's an amazing example from Wayne
- 7:14Dyer where he said, "If you squeeze an
- 7:16orange, what comes out? Orange juice.
- 7:19You don't squeeze an orange and lemon
- 7:20juice comes out. What comes out is
- 7:22what's already within.
- 7:24So if someone squeezes you,
- 7:26either in a stressful way or a positive
- 7:27way, what comes out was what was already
- 7:30within you.
- 7:31When you acknowledge
- 7:33that people only bring out of you what
- 7:36exists within you, you say, "Oh, you
- 7:39brought this out of me. You You the best
- 7:40out of me.
- 7:42That's because it's yours.
- 7:44Don't forget that whatever you love to
- 7:46experience with someone else came from
- 7:49within you. And it's still accessible.
- 7:51Part two, the myths that keep you stuck.
- 7:55I think it's so interesting when I was
- 7:57talking about the idea of writing
- 7:58stories,
- 7:59we create the story narrative forgetting
- 8:02all the bad things that happened. Right?
- 8:04Someone breaks up with you and now
- 8:05you're only thinking about the good
- 8:06times. You're only thinking about the
- 8:08positive memories. You're forgetting the
- 8:10arguments, you're forgetting the
- 8:11mistakes because now you're just like, I
- 8:13would do anything to have that person
- 8:15back because that's the story that makes
- 8:18me feel safe. And this is a really
- 8:20important part. Your brain is not
- 8:22working against you. It's trying to make
- 8:23you feel safe. And because it's trying
- 8:25to make you feel safe, it wants you to
- 8:26feel comfortable. And so it reminds you
- 8:28of all the comfortable things so that
- 8:30you're willing to even tolerate all the
- 8:32negative things all over again.
- 8:35So let's talk about the stories that
- 8:37keep us trapped. Here's myth number one.
- 8:41Time heals everything.
- 8:44Time doesn't heal everything.
- 8:46Healing happens when you stop waiting to
- 8:49feel nothing and start learning to live
- 8:53with what still hurts.
- 8:56Time doesn't erase the memories. It just
- 8:58teaches you how to carry them
- 9:00differently.
- 9:01Time doesn't make the pain vanish. It
- 9:04just helps you stop letting it control
- 9:06your day.
- 9:07And time doesn't fix the past. It helps
- 9:09you stop trying to relive it.
- 9:12Time doesn't bring closure alone.
- 9:14It gives you space to create your own.
- 9:17Time doesn't make you forget them.
- 9:20It helps you remember yourself.
- 9:22Time doesn't remove the ache. It reminds
- 9:25you that pain and progress can coexist.
- 9:29When we keep repeating things like time
- 9:31heals all wounds and you hear it from
- 9:32other people, it will just take time.
- 9:36That's not necessarily true because it's
- 9:38what you do with that time. It's how you
- 9:39repeat within that time. Now, there is a
- 9:42reality that the further you get away
- 9:43from something, the less hold it has on
- 9:46you.
- 9:47But if you're immersed in that
- 9:48relationship every day,
- 9:51it still feels like it has a hold on
- 9:53you. So, what you have to do is think
- 9:55about the hooks in your time.
- 9:58Scrolling their social media, looking at
- 10:00past pictures, checking in on what
- 10:02they're up to.
- 10:04All of those things are like hooks that
- 10:06keep you held and imprisoned by that
- 10:09relationship.
- 10:10Time can't do anything if the way you
- 10:13spend your time is completely fixated on
- 10:15them.
- 10:16Myth number two,
- 10:18"I just need closure."
- 10:20We all think that if they gave us a
- 10:22perfect explanation, we'd feel
- 10:24satisfied. When the reality is, even if
- 10:27someone gave you the perfect
- 10:28explanation, you'd find another thing
- 10:30with it that you don't agree with.
- 10:33Closure is realizing you may never get
- 10:36the apology,
- 10:38but you're done waiting for it.
- 10:40Closure is accepting that some chapters
- 10:43end without explanations,
- 10:45and that's still an ending.
- 10:47Closure is choosing peace over answers.
- 10:50It's when you stop trying to understand
- 10:52why it happened and start focusing on
- 10:55what it taught you.
- 10:56Closure is knowing you did what you
- 10:58could, and that it's not your job to
- 11:00carry both your pain and their growth.
- 11:04I think closure is one of those
- 11:06misleading pursuits.
- 11:08And really what the mind is trying to do
- 11:11is that the mind is focused and wired to
- 11:15want to complete unfinished tasks.
- 11:19The mind doesn't love incompleteness.
- 11:23What it doesn't understand is that
- 11:24completeness rarely is filled by someone
- 11:27else. I remember [snorts] coaching
- 11:29someone who just wanted this person to
- 11:31give them an answer. That person gave
- 11:33them an answer. They sent them a long
- 11:34email. And then the person said, "Well,
- 11:36what about this, this, and this? You
- 11:37didn't raise this." That person replied
- 11:39again through text messages. And the
- 11:41person said, "Well, what about this,
- 11:42this, this, and this?" And that process
- 11:44continues. Because what you're really
- 11:46saying is I just don't feel valued. I
- 11:49don't feel seen anymore. I just want you
- 11:50back. That's what you're saying. You're
- 11:52not really asking for an explanation.
- 11:55Because there is no explanation to
- 11:56satisfy you.
- 11:58Because the only person who can satisfy
- 12:00you is yourself in that moment by
- 12:02recognizing
- 12:03that whatever the explanation it may be,
- 12:06what's worrying me is not what they
- 12:08think of me.
- 12:10What worries me is what I think of
- 12:12myself.
- 12:14What you're worried about is not what
- 12:16other people think of you.
- 12:18You're worried that what they think of
- 12:20you might be true.
- 12:22It might be what you think about
- 12:24yourself.
- 12:25That's what worries you.
- 12:27You're concerned that what someone sees
- 12:30in you actually might exist.
- 12:32But when you start focusing
- 12:34on that, on growing yourself, healing
- 12:37yourself, working through that, that's
- 12:40what gives you closure. That's what
- 12:41gives you confidence. What are you doing
- 12:44this Thanksgiving besides overindulging
- 12:46and watching football? Well, maybe take
- 12:49the opportunity to reconnect with some
- 12:51friends through Facebook. Comment on an
- 12:53old friend's post or post to a Facebook
- 12:55group telling the gang you want to get
- 12:57together. I'll even write it for you.
- 12:59Hey everybody, let's meet at mine for
- 13:02pizza and football.
- 13:04Facebook offers a great way to connect,
- 13:06and a little connection goes a long way.
- 13:09Let's reconnect this holiday season with
- 13:11Facebook. Myth number three, if I move
- 13:14on, it means I never cared. So many of
- 13:18us think, "Oh, if I move on, it means
- 13:20that wasn't real. If they move on, it
- 13:22means that wasn't real."
- 13:24That's not true. Something can be real,
- 13:26and you can move on or they can move on.
- 13:29Something can be real for a period of
- 13:30time.
- 13:31Is it real that trees have leaves? Yes.
- 13:35But, in the fall, they let them go. Does
- 13:37that mean it wasn't real?
- 13:38No, of course not. You would never say
- 13:40that. It was real for that season.
- 13:42Something can be real for a season
- 13:45and not real for the next.
- 13:47A relationship can be good for you for 4
- 13:50years
- 13:51and not for the next. A connection
- 13:55can be powerful for you
- 13:57for a certain amount of time and not for
- 13:59the next. When you force it
- 14:02to be relevant, relatable, right for
- 14:05you,
- 14:06you actually are going against the grain
- 14:08of nature. Moving on doesn't mean the
- 14:11love wasn't real.
- 14:12It means you've learned what it came to
- 14:14teach you.
- 14:16If someone moves on, it doesn't mean
- 14:17that their feelings for you weren't
- 14:19real.
- 14:20It just means they had a deadline. It
- 14:23just means they had a timeline, and it
- 14:25means they had an end. Now, you'd say,
- 14:28"Well, then how do I ever know anyone
- 14:29has feelings for me that are real?"
- 14:32Because the person that you have
- 14:33feelings for that are real and the
- 14:35person that has them for you is someone
- 14:37who waters them every day.
- 14:40A student once came to the Buddha and
- 14:42asked,
- 14:43"What is the difference between I like
- 14:45you and I love you?"
- 14:48And the Buddha replied, "When you like a
- 14:50flower, you simply pluck it.
- 14:53But, when you love a flower, you water
- 14:55it every day.
- 14:56Real feelings are feelings that people
- 14:59invest in every day.
- 15:02A real love is a love that isn't decided
- 15:05on on a wedding day or an engagement or
- 15:07an anniversary.
- 15:08It's one that shows up every single
- 15:11day."
- 15:12Myth number four. If they came back, it
- 15:15would finally work. How many of you have
- 15:17ever said this? This time, if they came
- 15:18back, I would change. I would mold
- 15:20myself. I won't complain anymore, I
- 15:22won't raise issues.
- 15:25But let's be honest. You raised those
- 15:27issues because it wasn't good.
- 15:30There was their behavior or an
- 15:31interaction that didn't sit right with
- 15:33you. Now all of a sudden you're going to
- 15:35just let that go. All of a sudden you're
- 15:37going to say I'm never ever going to
- 15:38have an issue with bad behavior ever
- 15:40again. Is that the kind of love you
- 15:42want?
- 15:43Is that the kind of love you want to
- 15:44receive? One that you don't get to share
- 15:48what you feel?
- 15:50Is it love
- 15:52if you can't be honest with them?
- 15:54Is it love
- 15:56if you can't express your emotions
- 15:58without feeling fearful?
- 16:00Is it love
- 16:02if you can't express how you feel
- 16:05without them feeling uncomfortable?
- 16:07How can it be love
- 16:09if you can't share, express your
- 16:13feelings and emotions
- 16:15without feeling like they may react?
- 16:19Here's the truth. You don't miss them,
- 16:22you miss hope. But hope without change
- 16:25is just another heartbreak waiting to
- 16:28happen. When you stop feeding these
- 16:30myths, you stop feeding the illusion
- 16:33that keeps you stuck. We keep creating
- 16:37these illusions, illusory versions of
- 16:39life, not realizing that yep, they'll
- 16:41come back. Yes, for a month you won't
- 16:43say anything and in a month you will be
- 16:45upset about their behavior again. In a
- 16:47month you will be irritated. And then
- 16:49when you raise it, they'll say, "Wait a
- 16:51minute, I thought you were never going
- 16:52to raise this again." And you'll say,
- 16:53"Yeah, I didn't want to, but it's a big
- 16:55deal to me." The reason that you broke
- 16:57up in the first place is that there's
- 16:59something deeply rooted that disconnects
- 17:03you.
- 17:04You didn't break up over nothing. Don't
- 17:06invite drama back into your life
- 17:09long-term because you think that person
- 17:12will make you feel peaceful short-term.
- 17:14You'll invite someone who caused you
- 17:17pain back into your life
- 17:19because you don't want to deal with the
- 17:21pain of losing them in the short term.
- 17:25You don't want to do that.
- 17:26Part three, how to actually heal.
- 17:30Here's where we go from understanding to
- 17:33action.
- 17:34The first step is stop feeding the
- 17:37fantasy.
- 17:38You can't heal if you're still
- 17:40romanticizing the highlight reel.
- 17:43Block the breadcrumbs, social media, old
- 17:45photo playlists. The saying out of
- 17:48sight, out of mind couldn't be more
- 17:50true. You're not being dramatic, you're
- 17:52protecting your recovery.
- 17:55How do you stop the story? You stop the
- 17:57story by looking at both story lines.
- 18:01Right? If you only look at the story
- 18:03line you're feeling right now and you
- 18:05ignore the story line you felt a couple
- 18:07of months ago, you're not looking at the
- 18:08full picture.
- 18:10Look at the full picture. Write out
- 18:13every reason
- 18:15why you actually saw you weren't right
- 18:16for each other. Not why they're a bad
- 18:18person, but why you weren't right for
- 18:20each other because you had enough of
- 18:21those signs. Sometimes the reason you're
- 18:24upset that someone broke up with you
- 18:26is because you wanted to break up with
- 18:28them first.
- 18:30You wanted to be the person who ended
- 18:32things, but you were scared of doing
- 18:34that.
- 18:35And now you're living on the opposite
- 18:38end where they broken up with you when
- 18:40you were the one who knew it wasn't
- 18:42going in the right direction.
- 18:44But again, it was fear
- 18:47that kept you in the wrong relationship.
- 18:49And now it's fear that will make you go
- 18:51back to the wrong relationship.
- 18:54Fear keeps us in the wrong relationships
- 18:57and it makes us pursue the bad
- 18:59relationships all over again.
- 19:02You're not being dramatic when you
- 19:03disconnect from their social media, when
- 19:05you stop checking in on what they're up
- 19:07to, when you stop making them a part of
- 19:09your life.
- 19:11It allows you to truly start processing
- 19:14and not keep creating these stories.
- 19:16Number two,
- 19:17feel without dramatizing.
- 19:20You don't have to pretend you're fine.
- 19:22Grief is actually healthy.
- 19:24What's unhealthy is making it your
- 19:27identity.
- 19:28Sit with the sadness,
- 19:31but don't pitch your tent there.
- 19:33Try this journaling prompt. What did
- 19:36this relationship teach me about my
- 19:39needs, not my worth? After a breakup,
- 19:42the biggest mistake we make is we think
- 19:45that what happened is a reflection of
- 19:48our worth,
- 19:49not a reflection of our needs.
- 19:52When you reflect something onto your
- 19:54worth, you just feel worse.
- 19:56When you recognize something is teaching
- 19:58you about your needs, you're actually
- 20:00able to move forward and recognize what
- 20:02you want in the future.
- 20:04Number three, rebuild your rituals.
- 20:08Heartbreak steals structure.
- 20:11Healing gives it back.
- 20:13Start creating new anchors, morning
- 20:16walks, gym sessions, therapy, dinner
- 20:18with friends. What happens is your brain
- 20:21had a rhythm of life with that person.
- 20:24The morning text,
- 20:26the evening call,
- 20:28the date night on the weekend. Your
- 20:30brain had found a new rhythm
- 20:33that had replaced your old rhythm.
- 20:35Remember, you were single before this
- 20:37person. You had a rhythm before this
- 20:39person. So, what do you do? You've got
- 20:41to create a new rhythm.
- 20:44And the new rhythm has to tap into the
- 20:46moments where you feel the most
- 20:47triggered. If you can identify the three
- 20:50times in your day
- 20:52where you're most affected by this
- 20:55breakup
- 20:57and recognize that those are the moments
- 20:59you want to give yourself the most care,
- 21:01the most connection, the most being with
- 21:03other people,
- 21:04the most ability to not fall into that
- 21:06trap of
- 21:08revisiting the past, that's what you
- 21:10want to focus on.
- 21:12Number four, shift the question.
- 21:15Instead of asking, "Why didn't it work?"
- 21:18ask, "To what version of me was I
- 21:21becoming while trying to make it work?"
- 21:24If you were becoming a better version of
- 21:26yourself, how can you continue to do
- 21:27that?
- 21:28And if you were becoming a lesser
- 21:30version of yourself,
- 21:32how do you use that to remind yourself
- 21:33that you don't want to go back there?
- 21:36Asking yourself why it didn't work,
- 21:39there'll be a million answers,
- 21:41and there'll be so many from them and
- 21:43your side.
- 21:44But the truth is,
- 21:46it didn't work
- 21:47because they didn't want to make it
- 21:49work.
- 21:50And when one person doesn't want to make
- 21:52it work,
- 21:53it doesn't work just because you do.
- 21:56A healthy relationship is where both
- 21:57people want to make it work. You don't
- 22:00want to be in a relationship with
- 22:02someone who doesn't want to make it work
- 22:04with you,
- 22:05because it's never going to work just
- 22:07because one person wants it to work. A
- 22:10relationship only works when both people
- 22:12work on it together and want it to work.
- 22:15That is a definition of a healthy,
- 22:18long-term relationship. Both people are
- 22:21committed to making it work. There is no
- 22:24such thing as the right person. There's
- 22:27only the person who's willing to show up
- 22:30to try and make things right. When you
- 22:32both want to do that, the relationship
- 22:34is in working order.
- 22:36And number five, let pain become
- 22:39purpose.
- 22:40You're not meant to erase your story.
- 22:42You're meant to evolve through it. Every
- 22:44heartbreak can either harden you or
- 22:47humanize you.
- 22:49The difference is whether you learn or
- 22:51linger.
- 22:53What I find for so many people
- 22:55is that
- 22:57when you're in the moment where your
- 22:58heart's been broken,
- 23:00you can't believe it ever
- 23:03being glued back together.
- 23:06And what's incredible is that anyone
- 23:07that I've coached through that time,
- 23:09when they finally find love again, which
- 23:11happens every time,
- 23:13they completely forget that ever
- 23:14existed.
- 23:15You don't have to be hopeful right now.
- 23:17You don't have to believe right now. All
- 23:19you have to do
- 23:20is practice
- 23:22putting your heart back together
- 23:25and creating purpose to move forward,
- 23:26meaning to move forward. There's a
- 23:29beautiful practice called Kintsugi.
- 23:32It's the idea that when something
- 23:34breaks,
- 23:35it's rebuilt
- 23:37through this beautiful gold.
- 23:41And you may see items of pots, of clay,
- 23:44of
- 23:44plates that are broken, and now you can
- 23:47see the cracks, but the cracks are gold.
- 23:49That's what each and every one of us are
- 23:51when our hearts are broken.
- 23:52But knowing that those wounds only make
- 23:54you better for the future, they only
- 23:55make you aware of what you're looking
- 23:57for, they only make you prepared for the
- 23:59future. Part four.
- 24:01Here's what to do when you slip back. It
- 24:03is guaranteed that you will slip back.
- 24:06Recovering from a breakup is moving
- 24:09three steps forward and two steps back.
- 24:12It's feeling like you're healing
- 24:14and then crying like you're back to day
- 24:16one.
- 24:17It's experiencing growth
- 24:20and then feeling grief.
- 24:22Healing isn't linear.
- 24:25You might feel strong for weeks, then
- 24:27suddenly you see their name and
- 24:29everything floods back.
- 24:31That doesn't mean you're broken. It
- 24:33means you're human.
- 24:35When that happens, here's what I want
- 24:36you to remember.
- 24:38Missing someone doesn't mean you're
- 24:40meant for them. It just means they
- 24:42occupied a meaningful chapter of your
- 24:44life and your heart hasn't caught up to
- 24:47the ending yet.
- 24:48If you're going through a breakup,
- 24:50do this.
- 24:52Instead of texting them,
- 24:53text a friend.
- 24:55Instead of rereading your old messages,
- 24:58start creating new connections. Instead
- 25:01of asking, "Do they miss me?" ask, "Am I
- 25:04proud of who I'm becoming?"
- 25:06Because getting over someone isn't about
- 25:08forgetting them.
- 25:10It's about remembering you. There was a
- 25:12you before this relationship, there was
- 25:14a you during this relationship, and
- 25:16there is a you after this relationship.
- 25:18It is the most important relationship
- 25:21you will ever commit to.
- 25:24Don't ignore it because you felt that
- 25:27you are only in existence with this
- 25:29other individual. You existed before,
- 25:31you will always exist without them. I
- 25:34want to leave you with some closing
- 25:35words.
- 25:36Sometimes the hardest part isn't letting
- 25:39go of them, it's letting go of the
- 25:41future you built with them in your mind.
- 25:44But healing starts the moment you stop
- 25:47asking, "Why did they leave?" and start
- 25:50asking, "What is this pain trying to
- 25:53teach me?"
- 25:55So if you're in that place, still
- 25:57missing them, still aching,
- 25:59take a deep breath. Breathe in
- 26:01acceptance,
- 26:03breathe out attachment.
- 26:05You're not weak for still feeling.
- 26:08You're strong for still showing up.
- 26:10You're not behind in your healing,
- 26:13you're right on time for your
- 26:15transformation.
- 26:16You don't have to get over them today,
- 26:19you just have to focus on getting back
- 26:21to you.
- 26:22Thank you so much for listening. I hope
- 26:25this episode helps you in your healing
- 26:26journey. Please share it with a friend
- 26:28who's going through a really really
- 26:29difficult time, and I promise you this
- 26:32will be the launchpad of a beautiful
- 26:34love story for you. Remember, I'm
- 26:36forever in your corner, I'm always
- 26:38rooting for you, and thank you for
- 26:39joining me here on On Purpose. If you
- 26:41loved this episode, you're going to love
- 26:43my conversation with Matthew Hussey on
- 26:46how to get over your ex and find true
- 26:49love in your relationships. People
- 26:51should be compassionate to themselves,
- 26:53but extend that compassion to your
- 26:55future self. Because truly extending
- 26:58your compassion to your future self is
- 27:00doing something that gives him or her a
- 27:02shot at a happy and a peaceful life.
