- 0:00There is a lot of judgment
- 0:03online
- 0:04about how people choose to work, what
- 0:08fuels them, which fundamentally is it
- 0:10reward or punishment? Are they Are they
- 0:11going away from an aversive stimulus or
- 0:13towards, you know, a positive one?
- 0:16The answer, in my opinion, doesn't
- 0:18matter.
- 0:19And what I mean by that is
- 0:21I think the first rule of all
- 0:23entrepreneurship is use what you have.
- 0:26Because that's not going to change.
- 0:28Today, you have what you have. Those are
- 0:29the only resources you have available to
- 0:31you. You must become more resourceful.
- 0:34And that means that if you have shame
- 0:36and people tell you shame is bad,
- 0:39in what world could shame be good? If
- 0:42the shame you have
- 0:43creates this amazingly positive thing in
- 0:45your life, was it bad? If your dad not
- 0:48hugging you enough created the catalyst
- 0:51for you to go to the gym and live 20
- 0:52years longer because you work out
- 0:54regularly, was it bad? Do we need to
- 0:56label it at all?
- 0:58All we know is that it happened. And so
- 1:00what? There are these actions that
- 1:02increase the likelihood that you get
- 1:03what you want.
- 1:04Whether you do them because you had some
- 1:07negative thing or because you're going
- 1:08towards some positive thing, I think for
- 1:10the vast majority of people is
- 1:11narrative.
- 1:13They only They create the story. If I
- 1:14said, "Hey, why did you do this thing?"
- 1:17We are trained to give an answer. But
- 1:20that answer may have zero grounding in
- 1:22the truth. Not because you lied, but
- 1:23because you have no idea. Cuz most
- 1:25people don't know why they do what they
- 1:26do. They just do it and then they
- 1:28ascribe a reason afterwards. We know
- 1:30that it's mostly BS and you're not going
- 1:32to have a double-blind controlled
- 1:33placebo study on your life to be able to
- 1:36determine what the true root cause of
- 1:37Was this the dependent variable? If
- 1:40you're not going to be able to do that
- 1:40anyways, who cares? Use whatever you've
- 1:44got to get whatever you want. Give you a
- 1:46behavioral, you know, thing for this.
- 1:48It's like, you might be going through
- 1:49something difficult or a hard season or
- 1:50a bad day or bad moment, right? And I've
- 1:53heard the saying and it drives me
- 1:54absolutely bananas, which is that bad
- 1:55things come in threes. Anyone heard this
- 1:57before? Right?
- 1:58I so wholeheartedly disagree, but I will
- 2:00explain why I believe that saying is a
- 2:01saying. Bad things do not come in
- 2:03threes. Bad things occur.
- 2:06People do not know how to cope. They
- 2:07allow one bad thing to snowball into
- 2:09more bad things. And bad stuff sucks.
- 2:12And the only thing worse than willing
- 2:13one bad thing be a bad thing is to let
- 2:15one bad thing ruin many good things. If
- 2:18you think about a bad thing as a cancer,
- 2:19it's like well we want to isolate that
- 2:21cancer as fast as possible and not let
- 2:23that cancer of you losing your job
- 2:25affect your marriage. And then let you
- 2:26affecting your marriage affect how
- 2:28you're you know a parent. And let you
- 2:29know how you're a parent affect how you
- 2:31are going to pursue this new endeavor.
- 2:33People just basically give themselves an
- 2:35excuse for misbehaving. I had a bad day
- 2:38therefore I now have a legitimate excuse
- 2:41for being a bad husband or not being
- 2:42nice to my wife. They use it as an
- 2:44excuse to not exercise self-control.
- 2:47And that is when things snowball. This
- 2:49is why resilience is so important. Can
- 2:51something bad happen and I recover
- 2:53before I talk to somebody else? When
- 2:54things get bad, it looks like this.
- 2:57Something bad happens, something else
- 2:59bad happens, something else bad happens,
- 3:00and it keeps going down.
- 3:03Until eventually everyone in your life
- 3:04that is good has removed themselves and
- 3:05then you slowly recover. Or you don't
- 3:07recover at all. And you've seen these
- 3:09people. He lost his job, he gained
- 3:11weight, and man he's just never been the
- 3:13same. Pull your head out of your ass.
