  1. 0:00This is a really good one for gratitude.
  2. 0:02It's what I'll consider the grandfather
  3. 0:03frame.
  4. 0:05Which is basically
  5. 0:07you zoom all the way to the to the
  6. 0:08future. You're 85 years old.
  7. 0:10So, you're old man, right? You've been
  8. 0:12you know, you're in pain. Everything
  9. 0:14hurts. You don't have the energy you
  10. 0:15used to. You're slouching over. And
  11. 0:17you're you know, you you're counting
  12. 0:18down your days. And then you imagine
  13. 0:20yourself waking up in whatever age body
  14. 0:22you have right now.
  15. 0:24And you turn to your you know, your
  16. 0:25right or your left and you see your wife
  17. 0:27and you're like, man, she's so young. I
  18. 0:28couldn't can't believe she's so young
  19. 0:30right now. You look out the window and
  20. 0:32you're like, oh man, this is before they
  21. 0:33developed this whole area and we cleared
  22. 0:34all these high-rises. And then you like
  23. 0:36you get out of bed and you're like, oh
  24. 0:37man, like
  25. 0:39I'm not in pain, you know? And you wake
  26. 0:41up and you're like,
  27. 0:42you know, I don't feel like foggy. I
  28. 0:43feel like my memory's sharp. I I'm like
  29. 0:45I'm acute. I know what I'm going to do
  30. 0:47and you're like, wow, this is amazing.
  31. 0:49And the thing is is like nothing good
  32. 0:50has even happened yet.
  33. 0:52Because life just gets so much harder as
  34. 0:54you get older. You can't imagine how
  35. 0:55like gratitude comes from imagining a
  36. 0:57terrible thing and then removing that
  37. 0:59thing that was terrible.
  38. 1:01That is gratitude. Like how do you
  39. 1:02operationally gratitude? Imagine
  40. 1:03something terrible and then remember
  41. 1:06that that terrible thing has not
  42. 1:07occurred. That's gratitude. People are
  43. 1:08like, oh man, I'm so grateful for my
  44. 1:09health. How do you get grateful for your
  45. 1:10health? Imagine that you have cancer and
  46. 1:12that you're about to die and then
  47. 1:13realize that you don't have cancer. And
  48. 1:14then you're like, wow, I'm grateful that
  49. 1:15I don't have cancer. But you have to put
  50. 1:16that thing in there.
  51. 1:17You have to imagine that terrible thing.
  52. 1:19You have to go all the way there. I'll
  53. 1:20tell you something that happened
  54. 1:21recently.
  55. 1:22Layla had a a doctor's appointment for
  56. 1:24something and
  57. 1:26I was I was corresponding with our EAs.
  58. 1:30And I said, you know, how's everything
  59. 1:31going? And my EA responded, she has
  60. 1:35cancer.
  61. 1:36And I was like,
  62. 1:38okay.
  63. 1:40Got it. This is reality now. Okay. Like
  64. 1:43and then I and I've obviously I'm
  65. 1:45texting back like, you know, what kind?
  66. 1:47What's going on? Like do I need to be
  67. 1:48there? You know, what's up? And then she
  68. 1:50was like, oh my god, I'm so sorry. I
  69. 1:52meant the person who was the front desk.
  70. 1:54The reason they messed something up was
  71. 1:56because she had cancer, not Leila. And I
  72. 1:59was like,
  73. 2:01Got it. And so,
  74. 2:03what ended up happening, um, was that
  75. 2:05Leila ended up having, you know,
  76. 2:06something that she was dealing with.
  77. 2:08Then they figured out what it was. So,
  78. 2:09it wasn't good news.
  79. 2:11But, what had framed that bad news was
  80. 2:13that she was potentially on her
  81. 2:15deathbed. For me, I was just incredibly
  82. 2:17grateful that she didn't have cancer.
  83. 2:20And so, it just gave me this really
  84. 2:21wonderful reframe by accident of like,
  85. 2:23it could be worse.
  86. 2:25You're not dead.
  87. 2:26The fact that you are alive is living
  88. 2:29proof that you can endure it. And the
  89. 2:31day that something kills you, you won't
  90. 2:33have to anymore. Your life every day
  91. 2:36exists as evidence that you can handle
  92. 2:38everything that has come your way.
  93. 2:41And I think that if you've ever had any
  94. 2:43need for evidence, let that be the
  95. 2:45greatest evidence of all. A while back,
  96. 2:47there was a guy who had like broken up
  97. 2:48with his girlfriend, his grandfather
  98. 2:49died, and like I think somebody else in
  99. 2:51his family had like two deaths and a
  100. 2:52breakup. And he's like, "How do I keep
  101. 2:54going?"
  102. 2:56And I was like, "You already are keeping
  103. 2:58going. Like, you don't need any answer
  104. 3:00from me. Every day you are living proof
  105. 3:02in the fact that you have endured."
