If You Can Understand Him, Your English Is Incredible — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00If you can understand this video, then
- 0:01your English listening skills are
- 0:03incredible. That's because I'm going to
- 0:05be telling you a story, but I'm going to
- 0:07be speaking at a very natural native
- 0:09pace. There aren't going to be any
- 0:10subtitles, and there is going to be a
- 0:12bit of background noise as well, as you
- 0:15can probably already tell. So, the story
- 0:17I'm going to be telling you today is
- 0:19based on a very interesting concept
- 0:21called the butterfly effect, and I'll
- 0:24tell you what it is, and I'll tell you
- 0:27how it may have shown up in your life as
- 0:30well. And I'd like you to think about
- 0:31that throughout my story, because I can
- 0:33promise you in one way or another, this
- 0:35thing will have also impacted you. So,
- 0:37the butterfly effect is extremely
- 0:39simple, and it's just this idea that a
- 0:42very small, seemingly insignificant
- 0:45thing that happened in the past can go
- 0:47on to have massive, unpredictable
- 0:50outcomes in the future. Okay, an easy
- 0:52way to remember this is just imagine a
- 0:55butterfly on the other side of the world
- 0:57flapping its wings, and that causes
- 0:59something else to happen, which causes
- 1:00something else to happen, which causes
- 1:01something else to happen, and eventually
- 1:03that one butterfly causes a humongous
- 1:06event to happen on the other side
- 1:07[music] of the world as well.
- 1:09So, here's my example, right?
- 1:12This happened about 10 years ago. After
- 1:14school, so I'm I'm 28 now. This was when
- 1:16I was 17, so 11 years ago. After school
- 1:19one day, I was going back home with my
- 1:21friend. He was giving me a lift, and I
- 1:23randomly had a seizure in his car. And a
- 1:26seizure is basically
- 1:29is basically when you collapse, and you
- 1:31pass out, and you're like shaking on the
- 1:33floor. It's not very pleasant. I
- 1:35wouldn't really wish it on my worst
- 1:36enemy, but
- 1:38it's surprisingly common. You don't have
- 1:40to be epileptic to have a seizure.
- 1:42Normally, if you have seizures, you're
- 1:43epileptic. You've probably heard of
- 1:44that, epilepsy, but it's not uncommon
- 1:47for people to be to have seizures
- 1:49without being epileptic, and thankfully
- 1:51that was the case with me as well.
- 1:53Anyway, I had a random seizure,
- 1:55and they took me to hospital. They did
- 1:56some tests. They found out that it was a
- 1:58one-off event, but they put me on some
- 2:00medication anyway just as a precaution
- 2:03to ensure that I didn't have any more in
- 2:05the future.
- 2:06So, I didn't really think much of it at
- 2:08the time. I was like, "Okay, that's a
- 2:09bit annoying. It's a bit weird, but it
- 2:11seems like it's not going to be
- 2:12something that influences my life going
- 2:14forward." And I was right for quite a
- 2:17long time until it did influence my
- 2:19life. So, we'll fast forward
- 2:227 years when I was 24, okay?
- 2:25So, I didn't really know what I wanted
- 2:27to do with my life at that point, and I
- 2:29was running this one business reselling
- 2:32um custom Levi's jeans, but I also had
- 2:35recently gone on holiday to Korea, and I
- 2:38absolutely loved it, right? So, after
- 2:40that holiday, I was like, "You know
- 2:41what? I think I would quite like to move
- 2:43there." Sorry, I did
- 2:45I did promise some background noise, but
- 2:46this is a bit excessive.
- 2:48I apologize. Anyway, I went to Korea,
- 2:50and I was like, "You know what? I want
- 2:51to move there." So, what is the easiest
- 2:53way for someone to move to Korea? That
- 2:55is to become an English teacher. So,
- 2:57that's exactly what I did. I started
- 2:59getting my English teaching
- 3:00qualifications,
- 3:02and I started the process, and I filled
- 3:05out all the details, I made my
- 3:06application,
- 3:07and I just want to really emphasize it's
- 3:11so easy to get accepted into these
- 3:13public teaching programs in Korea.
- 3:16If you are if you speak English and you
- 3:18don't have a criminal record, they will
- 3:20accept you. It really is that simple.
- 3:23So, that's why I was so confident I was
- 3:24going to do that. And I was getting
- 3:25ready, I was saying goodbye to my
- 3:27friends and my family. I was nearly at
- 3:29the end of the process when one day I
- 3:31wake up to an email saying, "Hi Dylan,
- 3:34um we're afraid to say that you your
- 3:35application has been rejected,
- 3:37>> [music]
- 3:37>> and you can't apply with us again for
- 3:39the next 5 years. Sorry about that. We
- 3:42can't give a reason at the moment as to
- 3:43why your application has been rejected."
- 3:46So, I was so confused. I was like, cuz I
- 3:48had I In my mind, I I already there.
- 3:51So, to just wake up one day and to be
- 3:52told, "No, your plan's not possible
- 3:55anymore. You're not going to be doing
- 3:57that anymore." It's
- 3:58quite disorienting, to say the least.
- 4:00And I was just really confused, as well.
- 4:02So, I spoke to my account manager
- 4:04person, the one that was helping me with
- 4:05this entire process. And I was like,
- 4:08"I got rejected. Did you see it?" She
- 4:09was like, "Yeah, yeah, I saw it."
- 4:11"Why did I get rejected?" She was like,
- 4:13"Um
- 4:14I honestly don't know."
- 4:15So, I went through the application
- 4:16again, and we found out that it's
- 4:18because when you fill out the forms, you
- 4:20have to say if you are on any
- 4:22medication, or if you have been on any
- 4:24medication in the past.
- 4:26So, this is when I mentioned, without
- 4:28even thinking about [music] it, that I
- 4:30was on a medication to prevent any
- 4:32further seizures. But, I also said I
- 4:35haven't [music] had a seizure in like 10
- 4:37years, so it's not a big deal.
- 4:40And it's because of that they rejected
- 4:41me. I searched online, I went on Reddit,
- 4:43and I found out that there are there
- 4:44have been other cases in the past, the
- 4:46exact same, where they listed one tiny
- 4:49medication, and because of that,
- 4:51sorry.
- 4:53Koreans and their K-pop.
- 4:55And now that I think about it, I
- 4:56actually had a friend who I was learning
- 4:57Korean with,
- 4:59and she said that she had had some
- 5:01mental health problems in the past, like
- 5:035 years ago, and they rejected her
- 5:05because of that, as well. So, now that I
- 5:06think about it, they are extremely
- 5:07strict. So, that is an example of the
- 5:10butterfly effect. But, it gets crazier
- 5:11than that, because
- 5:12okay, you could argue this one thing
- 5:14happening, fast forward like 10 years, 7
- 5:16years,
- 5:17and that's had a huge impact on my life.
- 5:20I can no longer move to Korea.
- 5:21Obviously, that would have completely
- 5:22changed the direction of my life. Don't
- 5:24look at that guy, sorry. So,
- 5:26it's actually because of that, though.
- 5:27That's the reason why I started my
- 5:28YouTube channel, because it was a week
- 5:30after I was rejected from teaching in
- 5:34Korea,
- 5:35that out of spite, I decided to start
- 5:37this channel and teach online. I
- 5:39wouldn't have done that if they hadn't
- 5:40rejected me. I would have been living
- 5:41here, and there would be no British
- 5:43education. I wouldn't be making this
- 5:44video right now. Who knows what my life
- 5:46would have been like then, if I'd
- 5:47followed that route. But it was because
- 5:49of that one random seizure I had in my
- 5:52friend's car 11 years ago, that's what
- 5:54caused me to get rejected to career,
- 5:56that's what caused me to start my
- 5:57channel, and that's what caused me to
- 5:58have this completely different life.
- 6:01And if I have if you're new here,
- 6:03probably not, but in the past if any of
- 6:06my videos have influenced you in any way
- 6:08whatsoever, that's because of that one
- 6:10seizure I had 11 years ago. Yeah, I'm
- 6:11sweating because it's like 32° today.
- 6:14It's very humid. Anyway,
- 6:17so that is just an example of how
- 6:18something seemingly so small and
- 6:20insignificant can have such a huge
- 6:22impact not only on my life, but on other
- 6:24people's lives as well.
- 6:27God.
- 6:27So yeah, I'd like you to think of your
- 6:29That's the story, guys. I'd like you to
- 6:31think of your own example of the
- 6:32butterfly effect and think about how
- 6:35this has influenced your life. And it
- 6:36can be something small, and it might not
- 6:38be done yet because I promise you that
- 6:40something small can turn into something
- 6:41bigger and bigger and bigger. So just
- 6:43think about that, and if you have an
- 6:44interesting story, please comment down
- 6:45below.
- 6:46Anyway,
- 6:47that was the test. I
- 6:50That was hard because I was speaking at
- 6:51a very natural pace. I was rambling a
- 6:53bit. I wasn't very succinct with my
- 6:55words, so it was a very native realistic
- 6:58conversation there. There was a lot of
- 7:00background noise as well. So if you were
- 7:02able to understand that, good job. Your
- 7:03English is incredible. Now, I have a
- 7:05couple of things to note. Obviously,
- 7:07that will be testing your listening
- 7:08skills, but I know that a lot of you
- 7:11you're okay with the listening, but it's
- 7:12the speaking that you struggle with.
- 7:15So,
- 7:16if that's is you, then I'd like to
- 7:18invite you to join my private online
- 7:20community. Here you will get seven live

- 7:33nonsense, real people.
- 7:34And also, that's So the link to that is

- 7:37It's really fun. And also, I did post a

- 7:45enjoyed. Make sure to like, subscribe,
