  3. 0:16The new YouTube algorithm. Brand new
  4. 0:19algorithm. The YouTube algorithm has
  5. 0:21changed.
  6. 0:23[music]
  7. 0:24It's weird, isn't it? one disappointing
  8. 0:27upload and suddenly you're questioning
  9. 0:29everything. Maybe [music] YouTube's too
  10. 0:31saturated. Maybe the algorithm just
  11. 0:33hates me. Maybe I'm not talented enough.
  12. 0:35Maybe I'm just wasting [music] my time.
  13. 0:38And before long, those little doubts
  14. 0:40start making decisions for you. Because
  15. 0:42when nobody is watching your videos,
  16. 0:43[music] it's very easy to convince
  17. 0:45yourself that you've already failed.
  18. 0:47When in reality, you're judging your
  19. 0:49entire journey from your first few
  20. 0:51[music] steps.
  21. 0:55So, whenever I'm making a video, I get
  22. 0:57ridiculously invested in it. Like, I'll
  23. 1:00spend hours writing the script. I'll
  24. 1:02move the camera around the room 20 times
  25. 1:04trying to get the right shot. I'll sit
  26. 1:06there messing around with the edit for
  27. 1:08hours. And I love doing that. You know,
  28. 1:10I love pouring my heart and soul into
  29. 1:12these videos. But then eventually, you
  30. 1:14have to actually upload the video. And
  31. 1:17suddenly your video, this creative
  32. 1:19project that you're really proud of,
  33. 1:20gets reduced to a bunch of numbers on a
  34. 1:23screen. And I [music] think that is the
  35. 1:24moment where you have to completely
  36. 1:26change the way that you think about
  37. 1:28YouTube because when you're creating the
  38. 1:30video, I think you should be emotionally
  39. 1:32invested in it. [music] You know, you
  40. 1:34should care about your videos. You
  41. 1:35should try and create things that you're
  42. 1:37genuinely proud of. But the second that
  43. 1:39video [music] is uploaded, you almost
  44. 1:41need to switch off that emotional part
  45. 1:43of your brain. And the way I think about
  46. 1:45this is really simple. You need to
  47. 1:47create like an artist, [music]
  48. 1:49but study like a scientist. So once I've
  49. 1:52actually posted a video to YouTube, I
  50. 1:54try to just look at it like data [music]
  51. 1:56because really every video that you
  52. 1:57upload is essentially a little
  53. 1:59experiment. [music] You know, you're
  54. 2:01testing an idea. You're testing a title
  55. 2:03and thumbnail. Maybe you're testing a
  56. 2:05new video style. And whatever happens
  57. 2:07after that is just the result of that
  58. 2:09experiment. It doesn't say anything
  59. 2:11about your self-worth. It doesn't say
  60. 2:13anything about you as a person. It's
  61. 2:15just [music] data. You know, it's just
  62. 2:17numbers on a screen. But what happens
  63. 2:19when it's not just one video? What
  64. 2:22happens when you've posted 20, 30, 40
  65. 2:24videos and you still feel like you're
  66. 2:26stuck in exactly the same place? Well,
  67. 2:29I've definitely definitely been through
  68. 2:30periods like that myself. And something
  69. 2:32that has really helped me over the last
  70. 2:34few years of doing [music] this is to
  71. 2:36change the story that you tell yourself.
  72. 2:38Because think about it like this. Two
  73. 2:40creators can be in the exact same
  74. 2:42situation and tell themselves completely
  75. 2:45different stories. [music]
  76. 2:46So, one creator could post 30 videos and
  77. 2:48think, "H, I've made 30 videos and I'm
  78. 2:51still getting no views. Clearly, this
  79. 2:53isn't working. Clearly, I'm not cut out
  80. 2:55for this." And then another creator
  81. 2:56could post those exact same 30 videos
  82. 2:59and think, "Okay, you know, the results
  83. 3:01haven't caught up yet, but I'm getting
  84. 3:02better every time I post and I'm having
  85. 3:05so much fun doing it." Same number of
  86. 3:07videos, same number of views, but which
  87. 3:09creator do you think is more likely to
  88. 3:11actually grow their channel? Because
  89. 3:13eventually the story that you keep
  90. 3:14telling yourself starts changing the way
  91. 3:17that you create. If you are constantly
  92. 3:19telling yourself that you're not good
  93. 3:20enough, then you are going to start
  94. 3:22creating like someone who doesn't really
  95. 3:24believe in their own work. Whereas if
  96. 3:26you still see yourself as someone who is
  97. 3:28learning and experimenting and
  98. 3:30improving, then you are going to be way
  99. 3:32more likely to actually see some real
  100. 3:34results. Okay. So now there is one final
  101. 3:37question that we need to answer. What
  102. 3:39one thing is actually going to keep you
  103. 3:41going when nobody is watching? Because
  104. 3:43if the only reason you are doing YouTube
  105. 3:45is to make money or just for clout, then
  106. 3:48eventually that motivation is going to
  107. 3:51disappear. Especially during those
  108. 3:53months where you're putting everything
  109. 3:54into your videos and getting absolutely
  110. 3:57nothing back. So something that I found
  111. 3:59is you need a deeper reason behind what
  112. 4:02you are doing. You need something that
  113. 4:04still matters to you even when the views
  114. 4:06and the subscribers aren't there yet.
  115. 4:08And you can think of that deeper reason
  116. 4:10as your north star. For example, my
  117. 4:12north star is to help creators who are
  118. 4:15basically where I was a few years ago,
  119. 4:17where you're making videos and trying to
  120. 4:19grow your channel, but you still feel
  121. 4:21like you're miles away from where you
  122. 4:23want to be. And for me, having that
  123. 4:25north star is probably the reason why
  124. 4:27this channel is where it is today.
  125. 4:29because when I was posting videos that
  126. 4:31weren't getting any views, having that
  127. 4:33deeper reason was the thing that got me
  128. 4:35to set that camera back up every time
  129. 4:38and keep going. So, I would really
  130. 4:40recommend taking a piece of paper and
  131. 4:42literally writing down one question.
  132. 4:44What is my personal north star that
  133. 4:47makes all of this worth it? And then
  134. 4:49whatever answer you write down, keep
  135. 4:51coming back to it. because during those
  136. 4:53periods where YouTube is giving you
  137. 4:54absolutely nothing back, that is the
  138. 4:56thing that's going to remind you why
  139. 4:58you're doing all of this in the first
  140. 5:00place. Okay, so hopefully you enjoyed
  141. 5:01this video. I had a lot of fun making
  142. 5:03it. And if you do want to learn more
  143. 5:05about how to actually break out of that
  144. 5:07dead zone period [music] at the
  145. 5:09beginning of your journey, then click
  146. 5:10onto this video just up here and I'll
  147. 5:13see you there. [music]
