  1. 0:00There is a lot of judgment
  2. 0:03online
  3. 0:04about how people choose to work, what
  4. 0:08fuels them, which fundamentally is it
  5. 0:10reward or punishment? Are they Are they
  6. 0:11going away from an aversive stimulus or
  7. 0:13towards, you know, a positive one?
  8. 0:16The answer, in my opinion, doesn't
  9. 0:18matter.
  10. 0:19And what I mean by that is
  11. 0:21I think the first rule of all
  12. 0:23entrepreneurship is use what you have.
  13. 0:26Because that's not going to change.
  14. 0:28Today, you have what you have. Those are
  15. 0:29the only resources you have available to
  16. 0:31you. You must become more resourceful.
  17. 0:33And that means that if you have shame
  18. 0:36and people tell you shame is bad,
  19. 0:39in what world could shame be good? If
  20. 0:42the shame you have creates this
  21. 0:44amazingly positive thing in your life,
  22. 0:46was it bad? If your dad not hugging you
  23. 0:49enough created the catalyst for you to
  24. 0:51go to the gym and live 20 years longer
  25. 0:53because you work out regularly, was it
  26. 0:55bad? Do we need to label it at all?
  27. 0:58All we know is that it happened. And so
  28. 1:00what? There are these actions that
  29. 1:02increase the likelihood that you get
  30. 1:03what you want. Whether you do them
  31. 1:05because you had some negative thing or
  32. 1:08because you're going towards some
  33. 1:09positive thing, I think for the vast
  34. 1:10majority of people is narrative.
  35. 1:13They only They create the story. If I
  36. 1:14said, "Hey, why did you do this thing?"
  37. 1:17We are trained to give an answer. But
  38. 1:20that answer may have zero grounding in
  39. 1:22the truth. Not because you lied, but
  40. 1:23because you have no idea. Cuz most
  41. 1:25people don't know why they do what they
  42. 1:26do. They just do it and then they
  43. 1:28ascribe a reason afterwards. We know
  44. 1:30that it's mostly BS and you're not going
  45. 1:32to have a double-blind controlled
  46. 1:33placebo study on your life to be able to
  47. 1:36determine what the true root cause of
  48. 1:37Was this the dependent variable? If
  49. 1:40you're not going to be able to do that
  50. 1:40anyways, who cares? Use whatever you've
  51. 1:44got to get whatever you want. Give you a
  52. 1:46behavioral, you know, thing for this.
  53. 1:48It's like you might be going through
  54. 1:49something difficult or a hard season or
  55. 1:50a bad day or a bad moment, right? And
  56. 1:52I've heard the saying that it drives me
  57. 1:54absolutely bananas, which is that bad
  58. 1:55things come in threes. Anyone heard this
  59. 1:57before? Right?
  60. 1:58I so wholeheartedly disagree, but I will
  61. 2:00explain why I believe that saying is a
  62. 2:01saying. Bad things do not come in
  63. 2:03threes. Bad things occur.
  64. 2:06People do not know how to cope. They
  65. 2:07allow one bad thing to snowball into
  66. 2:09more bad things. And bad stuff sucks.
  67. 2:12And the only thing worse than letting
  68. 2:13one bad thing be a bad thing is to let
  69. 2:15one bad thing ruin many good things. If
  70. 2:18you think about a bad thing as a cancer,
  71. 2:19it's like well we want to isolate that
  72. 2:21cancer as fast as possible and not let
  73. 2:23that cancer of you losing your job
  74. 2:25affect your marriage. And then let you
  75. 2:26affecting your marriage affect how
  76. 2:28you're you know a parent. And let you
  77. 2:29know how you're a parent affect how you
  78. 2:31were going to pursue this new endeavor.
  79. 2:33People just basically give themselves an
  80. 2:35excuse for misbehaving. I had a bad day,
  81. 2:38therefore I now have a legitimate excuse
  82. 2:41for being a bad husband or not being
  83. 2:42nice to my wife. They use it as an
  84. 2:44excuse to not exercise self-control.
  85. 2:47And that is when things snowball. This
  86. 2:49is why resilience is so important. Can
  87. 2:51something bad happen and I recover
  88. 2:53before I talk to somebody else? When
  89. 2:54things get bad, it looks like this.
  90. 2:57Something bad happens, something else
  91. 2:59bad happens, something else bad happens,
  92. 3:00and it keeps going down.
  93. 3:03Until eventually everyone in your life
  94. 3:04that is good has removed themselves and
  95. 3:05then you slowly recover. Or you don't
  96. 3:07recover at all. And you've seen these
  97. 3:09people. He lost his job, he gained
  98. 3:11weight, and man he's just never been the
  99. 3:13same. Pull your head out of your ass.
