IELTS Speaking Practice - Intermediate/Advanced English Listening — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hello everybody. This is teacher Levy.
- 0:04Today we'll be speaking in normal
- 0:07English. So we'll cover IELTS today. The
- 0:11test, it's very common for my students
- 0:14to practice for the IELTS. Uh, so we'll
- 0:18do a speaking practice and I'll do it
- 0:22myself and that way you can listen to my
- 0:26thinking process and how I would answer
- 0:29a part two question. So there's three
- 0:32parts. Me and a lot of other students
- 0:36agree that the second part is perhaps
- 0:39the most challenging from all three. So,
- 0:43we're going to do part two questions
- 0:46um and I will answer them today. So,
- 0:48thanks for tuning in to day six of the
- 0:51English boot camp.
- 0:54I wanted to visit an archaeological site
- 0:59today,
- 1:01but I'm not sure if I'm going to find
- 1:02it.
- 1:04Um, and time is of the essence, which is
- 1:07a saying that we don't have so much
- 1:09time. We need to make it count
- 1:13to make it make it count. So
- 1:17maybe it won't happen today, but we're
- 1:19going to do the IELTS
- 1:21practice. So that's the plan. I heard
- 1:26some
- 1:27animals.
- 1:29Of course,
- 1:31when the camera is off, I see a lot of
- 1:35animals around here. And then when I
- 1:38turned the camera on, they ran away. So
- 1:42that's okay. Sooner or later, as we say,
- 1:47sooner or later, we'll see some
- 1:49together. So let's hope.
- 1:54So I recommend this website, IELTS by
- 1:57Liz. If anyone is looking to take the
- 2:00IELTS test, then IELTS by Liz is an
- 2:04amazing site. It's fully free. So you
- 2:07can access speaking, reading, writing,
- 2:10listening
- 2:12sections on the site and she has a very
- 2:16good breakdown of the topics and
- 2:19questions that could be on the test. So
- 2:22I recommend that. Perhaps this was
- 2:27something that they dug out. Who knows?
- 2:30But that's a big hole.
- 2:33Um I by Liz. I'm going to put the link
- 2:37in the description
- 2:39and you guys can check it out. I'm gonna
- 2:42find or I already found a few topics. I
- 2:46will put them on screen and we'll go one
- 2:49by one. The part two speaking
- 2:53is divided into
- 2:56one minute of preparation
- 3:01and one or two minutes of speaking. So
- 3:04that's what you should attempt or try to
- 3:08do. That's what I will do today too. So,
- 3:12I'll think out loud so that you guys
- 3:15know what I am thinking of while I'm
- 3:20preparing for a question. An important
- 3:23part for answering a question, in my
- 3:26opinion, is TTQA.
- 3:29I might have talked about this before in
- 3:32another video, but TTQA,
- 3:35the letters mean turn the question
- 3:37around. A lot of times when I ask a
- 3:41question to my students, they say
- 3:44because. They start the sentence with
- 3:47because, which is not a good way to
- 3:50start. So a basic example would be if I
- 3:55ask what's your favorite color? You
- 3:57would say my favorite color is green
- 4:01because I love the color of leaves. For
- 4:04example, so turn the question around.
- 4:07What is your favorite color? My favorite
- 4:09color is
- 4:11So, let's do the first question or topic
- 4:14for part two. This is exercise. I will
- 4:18put it on screen so you can read it
- 4:21along with me. Describe an exercise you
- 4:24know. You should say what it is, how it
- 4:27is done, when you first tried it, what
- 4:30kind of people it is suitable for, and
- 4:33explain why you think it is a good
- 4:34exercise. So, we'll do one minute
- 4:37preparation.
- 4:38Instantly,
- 4:40uh, I'm thinking of the rowing machine.
- 4:44Usually, I would write it down so you
- 4:46can take notes and glance at your notes.
- 4:49So, I would have the rowing machine,
- 4:52which I tried years ago when I was more
- 4:57consistent with going to the gym. So, I
- 5:00used to use the rowing machine for
- 5:02warming up. It is similar obviously to
- 5:06rowing, but it uses this pulley device
- 5:12that you can pull. It's good for cardio
- 5:15and it's also good for perhaps upper
- 5:17body uh muscle growth. So that's what I
- 5:21would instantly think of what kind of
- 5:24people it is suitable for. I would write
- 5:26down that athletes
- 5:28and people who go to the gym. So that's
- 5:31what I would discuss. I think that was
- 5:34roughly a minute and now I'll do one or
- 5:36two minutes for answering the question.
- 5:40So an exercise I know that I really
- 5:42enjoy is the rowing machine. This
- 5:47exercise is used for developing your
- 5:51upper body muscles and also your cardio.
- 5:56It is a good exercise for warming up and
- 6:00if you have only 20 or 30 minutes to
- 6:04work out, it is a good exercise for that
- 6:07as well. You use this machine by sitting
- 6:12on a seat that slides back and forth. I
- 6:15first tried this machine maybe 10 years
- 6:19ago when I started attending a workout
- 6:25program provided by my football team.
- 6:29So, we were scheduled to go to the gym
- 6:31three or four times a week and they
- 6:35showed us different exercises and
- 6:38machines we could use during the
- 6:41sessions. So, that was my first time
- 6:44trying the rowing machine. I think it's
- 6:47good for athletes or people who are
- 6:50looking to get started in working out or
- 6:54going to the gym because it is pretty
- 6:56easy to use. It doesn't take a lot of
- 7:00practice to get the hang of it. For
- 7:03beginners, even for advanced athletes
- 7:07who are looking to get a good warm up
- 7:11before doing perhaps heavy lifting, I
- 7:13think it's a good exercise
- 7:16because you're able to do two things at
- 7:19once or get two birds with one stone.
- 7:22You're able to get your cardio done and
- 7:24you're also able to work on your muscles
- 7:27perhaps toning your muscles because it
- 7:30is not super heavy. For example, bench
- 7:34pressing or squatting. This is perhaps a
- 7:38more high intensity
- 7:42and high reps exercise. So, I think that
- 7:45was pretty good.
- 7:47Not bad. Ideally, you would have notes
- 7:51so that your structure or speaking
- 7:55structure is more organized and you're
- 7:58not all over the place. I like to go
- 8:01down the list. So, answering questions
- 8:04from top to bottom and then set up your
- 8:08speaking so it roughly matches one or
- 8:10two minutes. The idea is also not to
- 8:13speak too slow.
- 8:15I've had students where they're
- 8:18answering the question and they get
- 8:21interrupted by the instructor
- 8:25um and they say that the time's up and
- 8:28they were speaking too slow to fully
- 8:31answer the question. So, that's a
- 8:33problem that happens sometimes. It's
- 8:35best to speak fast, but speak clearly.
- 8:38Don't rush. Try to get as much useful
- 8:41vocabulary as you can while speaking or
- 8:44answering the question.
- 8:47Okay, let's do one more. So,
- 8:51book. We'll do book. Describe a book you
- 8:55have recently read. You should say what
- 8:58kind of book it is, what it is about,
- 9:02what sort of people would enjoy it, and
- 9:04explain why you liked it.
- 9:06So, keep in mind I'm trying to speak at
- 9:11a normal speed. Sometimes I might repeat
- 9:15myself just to clarify or if there's
- 9:18pronunciation that I think you should
- 9:20pay attention to, but it's roughly the
- 9:25same speed as I would speak normally.
- 9:28So,
- 9:30uh, describe a book you recently read.
- 9:32My first thought is this book about
- 9:36water and the importance of drinking
- 9:39enough water. This book I read a few
- 9:43years ago but they don't need to know
- 9:45that. I think the term recently
- 9:49is subjective or relative. So it could
- 9:54be last year, it could be last week. I
- 9:58think this book is good for um an answer
- 10:02that would give me a good score. So try
- 10:04and pick a a book or a answer which fits
- 10:10all the questions that we have here.
- 10:13That way you can have your thoughts
- 10:16ready and you don't need to stop and
- 10:19pause and think about what you're going
- 10:20to say. So the water book is what I
- 10:23would talk about. It's about drinking a
- 10:25lot of water. what sort of people would
- 10:28enjoy it? Uh people who are into health
- 10:31or diet and explain why you liked it. It
- 10:34helped me a lot. So that's kind of my
- 10:36what my answer is going to be.
- 10:40So a book I've recently read is you're
- 10:43not sick, you're thirsty. It is a book
- 10:46written by an Iranian doctor who has
- 10:51since passed away. It is a book about
- 10:55health. It focuses on improving
- 11:00different conditions that we might have
- 11:02or we might face. So the key uh concept
- 11:06from the book is that we are dehydrated.
- 11:08We don't drink enough water. And um a
- 11:12common term that he uses throughout the
- 11:14book is chronic dehydration, which is
- 11:17long-term dehydration
- 11:19when we don't drink enough water for
- 11:22perhaps years or even our whole lives. I
- 11:25think people who are into health,
- 11:27they're into diet or even exercise,
- 11:31these would be good people
- 11:34um to recommend the book to.
- 11:38I really enjoyed the book because it
- 11:41changed my life. I started drinking a
- 11:43lot of water afterwards and I started
- 11:46paying attention to drinking water
- 11:49specifically after waking up after
- 11:52exercising
- 11:54and also adding salt sometimes to
- 11:57hydrate myself better. So these are
- 12:00takeaways or key lessons which I learned
- 12:04from reading the book.
- 12:07So I think that answer was pretty good,
- 12:09not bad. um try to minimize grammatical
- 12:13mistakes while you're speaking. Of
- 12:15course, for this you'll have to
- 12:18do other speaking practice. Uh for
- 12:22example, having a uh coach or teacher
- 12:26who can write down your mistakes perhaps
- 12:29with prepositions or basic tenses and
- 12:33you can work on those separately. When
- 12:35you get to these questions, it will be
- 12:37helpful. So that will improve your
- 12:39speaking overall.
- 12:41So these were the two topics for IELTS.
- 12:44I recommend this even for people who
- 12:46aren't taking the test. It's a good
- 12:47exercise uh just to have fun and switch
- 12:51it up and try something different. So I
- 12:54think it can't hurt so to do these
- 12:56practices or exercises.
- 12:59Uh thank you for joining day six of the
- 13:01boot camp. We'll have day seven tomorrow
- 13:05and on Monday which will be day eight
- 13:10we'll have the live stream
- 13:12as well as the members video. The live
- 13:16stream will be at the usual time and
- 13:20different topic. We won't do only
- 13:22phrasal verbs this time. So something
- 13:25else. But thank you for watching. Thank
- 13:27you for the comments and the suggestion
- 13:31um of what I read this morning. Somebody
- 13:35commented to do IELTS. So that is where
- 13:38I got the idea. Thank you for that. I'll
- 13:40put the comment on screen as well. And
- 13:43some of the comments are funny. Somebody
- 13:46said it's still way too slow. Obviously,
- 13:50it's not. But thank you for the support.
- 13:53If you like the boot camp so far, feel
- 13:56free to like and subscribe and I'll see
- 13:59you tomorrow. Thank you.
