- 0:00section
- 0:01three you will hear a tutor and a
- 0:03student discussing a
- 0:06seminar first you have some time to look
- 0:08at questions 21 to
- 0:2826
- 0:42now listen carefully and answer
- 0:44questions 21 to
- 0:5126 come
- 0:54in hi oh hello Ahmed how are you fine
- 0:58thanks
- 1:01I have a
- 1:02seat so how do you think the seminar
- 1:06went last week oh well I enjoyed it yes
- 1:11though I'm not sure I really followed
- 1:13parts of the discussion that took
- 1:15place you know about the theory and all
- 1:19that well we can talk about that later
- 1:22but were you comfortable in a group oh
- 1:26it's better I think than working on your
- 1:28own though your comparing yourself all
- 1:31the time with the other students there
- 1:33okay well let's talk about how you did
- 1:37and look at some strategies to help you
- 1:39in the future that would be great now
- 1:42one of the things that students often
- 1:44Overlook when they go to seminars is
- 1:46that you do need to prepare for them you
- 1:49can't rely on other people I know and I
- 1:52did look at the results of the
- 1:54experiments we did in class and write
- 1:56them up beforehand as you said yes and
- 2:00that was good it made it easier to
- 2:02analyze them but you have to do some
- 2:05background reading as well did you get
- 2:07the list of articles I sent round mhm
- 2:11I've started to read them okay well
- 2:14you'll know that for next time yes yes
- 2:16sure so let's move on to your
- 2:19participation in the seminar right
- 2:22perhaps you can tell me how you think
- 2:24that
- 2:25went yeah well I'm not used to talking
- 2:29to more than and a couple of people it's
- 2:32very different from the way we learn in
- 2:33my home country yes I appreciate that so
- 2:37I think I um well I know I should have
- 2:40included everyone but I think I kept
- 2:43turning to the person next to me is that
- 2:46because you were avoiding eye contact I
- 2:48don't think so I'm not shy it's just
- 2:51habit I think well that will improve as
- 2:54we do more seminars uhhuh um another
- 2:58difficulty is no knowing when to speak
- 3:01like when it's your turn yes I I felt I
- 3:05did wait for a pause yes you handled
- 3:08that quite well the thing I'm really
- 3:09concerned about is keeping up with the
- 3:12discussion ah does your mind wander off
- 3:15sometimes I jot down a lot of
- 3:17information but I still find myself
- 3:20thinking about something else when lots
- 3:22of other students are talking H if
- 3:25there's an assignment to do at the end
- 3:27of a group that usually helps I'm sure
- 3:30it does okay now the last thing I want
- 3:33to look at is the role that you play in
- 3:36the seminar what do you mean well when
- 3:39students work in groups they don't all
- 3:41behave the same way some students are
- 3:44quiet some look for support some ask a
- 3:48lot of questions oh that's a new idea to
- 3:51me I don't know what I'm like that's
- 3:54probably because you're thinking about
- 3:55your own performance all the time I
- 3:58guess so I I mean should I be different
- 4:01in some way what I would say is that
- 4:04when we do the next seminar you should
- 4:07look more at the people around you you
- 4:09know look outside yourself like ask
- 4:12myself how they feel yes or what they're
- 4:16looking for from the group okay it
- 4:19doesn't take much but it's important to
- 4:21watch what other students are doing okay
- 4:23I'll do that fine now I'm going to
- 4:28suggest
- 4:32before you hear the rest of the
- 4:33conversation you have some time to look
- 4:35at questions 27 to
- 4:5830
- 5:09now listen and answer questions 27 to
- 5:1730 now I'm going to suggest a couple of
- 5:20strategies for next week's seminar okay
- 5:24that's great I need to participate more
- 5:26well it's not a question of saying more
- 5:29but we need everyone to feel comfortable
- 5:32about giving their views then the
- 5:34discussion is better yes so you're a
- 5:39confident person should I make sure I'm
- 5:42near someone who's quiet you can do but
- 5:45it's more about how well you pay
- 5:47attention to other students okay so I
- 5:50need to be attentive yes and then
- 5:52encourage someone else to say more by
- 5:55saying what did you mean when you said
- 5:58or what what do you think about the idea
- 6:01that that way I'm talking yes but you'll
- 6:06find that other people will talk too
- 6:08you'll all start to get really involved
- 6:12right they're good suggestions the other
- 6:15thing that can really help is the way
- 6:16you take notes yeah I I know I write
- 6:19down everything but I should be stricter
- 6:22with myself well you actually need to
- 6:24think a few days ahead really yes what's
- 6:29the topic and what's the best way of
- 6:32making notes I see so I have a strategy
- 6:36when I walk in the room exactly then
- 6:39when you read through them later they'll
- 6:41make sense and you won't have to write
- 6:43them out again I always have to do that
- 6:46the other thing I would say is that you
- 6:48should include a small column in your
- 6:50notes where you can jot down things you
- 6:53want to go back to before the seminar
- 6:55ends like a reminder yes notes aren't
- 6:59just just for later you can use them as
- 7:01a prompt when there's a pause in the
- 7:03discussion that's been really helpful
- 7:06okay see you in class tomorrow
- 7:12thanks that is the end of section three
- 7:16you now have half a minute to check your
- 7:22answers
