Identity Shifting: How to Reinvent Yourself in 3-6 Months (in 2026) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00One of the most powerful ways you can
- 0:01reinvent yourself in three to six months
- 0:03is through identity shifting. And that's
- 0:06what we're talking about today. I'll
- 0:08give you three practical steps. We'll
- 0:10look at how you actually do this. So,
- 0:12what exactly is identity shifting? Let
- 0:14me explain it with an urban legend.
- 0:16There's an urban legend of a goldfish
- 0:18that it can only grow to the size of its
- 0:20bowl. But then when you take that
- 0:21goldfish and you put it in a large pond,
- 0:23gets much bigger, eventually growing
- 0:25into those expensive koiish you see in
- 0:28Bond villain movies. We are just like
- 0:30that fish and the bowl is our identity.
- 0:33You can also call this your self-image.
- 0:35How you see yourself. This is the
- 0:37deepest layer of who you are. You have
- 0:38three layers of change that you can
- 0:41focus on. Most people start with the
- 0:42third layer. This is actions. You want
- 0:45to get fit, you go running. You want to
- 0:47build a business, you post content. You
- 0:49want to get in a relationship, you start
- 0:51dating. One layer deeper are the stories
- 0:53you tell yourself. So if you tell
- 0:55yourself, ah, business is too
- 0:56competitive, you know, I just can't get
- 0:58ahead. Well, then it becomes a feedback
- 0:59loop. It blocks the actions. All of that
- 1:02is getting at the identity. James Clear
- 1:04has a great book on this, Atomic Habits.
- 1:06He says that the goal is not to go on a
- 1:08run. It's to become a runner. That's an
- 1:10identity goal. The goal is not to make a
- 1:12million dollars. It's to become someone
- 1:14who's financially free. The goal is not
- 1:15to just go on dates and, you know, waste
- 1:17time. It's to hopefully find someone you
- 1:19vibe with that matches your lifestyle.
- 1:21And here's the problem. Most people want
- 1:23to change by going from the outside in.
- 1:27But the faster way to change is to go
- 1:29from the inside out. And when you change
- 1:32your self-image, how you see yourself,
- 1:35that changes your core stories of what
- 1:37you can and can't achieve. And once
- 1:39those change, of course, you're going to
- 1:41take new actions because you're
- 1:42basically a different person. You ever
- 1:44seen someone do something you thought
- 1:45was impossible and it totally rocks your
- 1:47worldview of what is? This is
- 1:49controlling the amount of money you make
- 1:50or don't. This is controlling the type
- 1:52of person you attract or don't. And this
- 1:55is controlling your future you or if
- 1:58you're held back in the past like we
- 2:00spoke about. Now I want to give you
- 2:02three steps to do this. But first I want
- 2:04to tell you a brief story to really make
- 2:06this land of how these identities hold
- 2:09you back and are keeping you stuck. So
- 2:11back in grade school I was a kid and we
- 2:13were learning multiplication tables. I'm
- 2:15sure you did something similar where
- 2:17your teacher gets 12 of you up in the
- 2:21black on the blackboard and she says,
- 2:23"Okay, you're doing the ones. 1 * 1 is
- 2:251. 1 * all the way up to 12. You're
- 2:28doing the fives. 5 * 6 is 30. All the
- 2:31way up to 12." Well, I got the 11s. So,
- 2:34I'm up there sweating bullets in front
- 2:36of the whole class trying to do mental
- 2:39gymnastics to solve these damn 11s. I
- 2:42didn't know the trick that it's 11, 22,
- 2:4433, 44. I am the last one up there and
- 2:48everyone starts laughing and I'm
- 2:50humiliated. I carried that belief I'm
- 2:52bad with math around through high
- 2:54school, through college. It held me back
- 2:56from classes cuz anytime there was math,
- 2:58my identity was like, buddy, you don't
- 3:00do math. Remember the 11s. And so when I
- 3:03got into business post college for
- 3:04myself, a funny thing happened. that
- 3:07belief I'm bad at math. All of a sudden,
- 3:09when the numbers meant something to me
- 3:11and it was my business, I realized I
- 3:14love math because numbers are just data.
- 3:17And if we cut this, then we gain this
- 3:19and oh, what if we move things around? I
- 3:21realized that that identity I was bad at
- 3:23math was just a story I had been
- 3:25carrying around that wasn't true. And
- 3:27so, the reason I'm telling you this is
- 3:29because I call those identity anchors.
- 3:31things that strap to you, you carry
- 3:33around your whole life that are like
- 3:36literal weight holding you back and
- 3:38keeping you stuck. The gap between who
- 3:40you are and who you could be is filled
- 3:42with the stories you tell yourself. So,
- 3:44the very first step you do to shift your
- 3:47identity is ask yourself, what are the
- 3:50three to five core stories I've been
- 3:52telling myself keeping me in the small
- 3:54bowl? Now, you're like, okay, well, what
- 3:56are my stories? After working with
- 3:58thousands of people, I noticed four
- 4:00camps that a lot of these stories fall
- 4:02into. So, I'll just give them to you
- 4:04here. Take these, journal on them, and I
- 4:07bet your core stories are going to be in
- 4:08one of these four groups. I'm too old or
- 4:12too young. I'll fail. And everyone will
- 4:14insert the word. I'm not ready yet. I'm
- 4:18not the kind of person who fill in the
- 4:20blank. It's too late. It's too scary.
- 4:22It's the wrong time. Or small bowl
- 4:25syndrome. The most dangerous story isn't
- 4:27the one that's completely false. It's
- 4:29the one that's just true enough to where
- 4:30you believe it. Hey, if you're liking
- 4:32this before the next point, make sure
- 4:34you're on our refusing to settle
- 4:35newsletter down below. I send it every
- 4:37Saturday morning directly to you with
- 4:39ideas that'll change your life. But
- 4:41knowing what your core stories are
- 4:43aren't enough because people identify
- 4:46them and they get caught in self-healing
- 4:49hell I call it where their whole life
- 4:51gets consumed with why they can't and
- 4:53they have to find the root and oh I
- 4:55can't move forward until I find this
- 4:57thing. So the next step is as important
- 5:00that I recommend doing as soon as
- 5:02possible. In the same way people have
- 5:04blueprints before they build a house.
- 5:06You have to know a rough idea of who you
- 5:09want to become. What would make it a win
- 5:12for you? And so what I like to recommend
- 5:14here is a very simple exercise, and
- 5:17there's so many different ones, but this
- 5:19one, if you do it, will at least get you
- 5:22started. You grab a journal, you set a
- 5:24timer for 30 minutes, and you write out
- 5:27your ideal week. This doesn't have to be
- 5:305 years from now, 10 years from now.
- 5:32That can be really far away. But as if
- 5:34right now, what would your ideal week
- 5:36look like? Who are you surrounded by?
- 5:38Who are you with? How do you carry
- 5:41yourself? How are you structuring your
- 5:42time? What do others say about you? What
- 5:45do you do for work? Do you have any
- 5:47hobbies? You want a bonus question? This
- 5:50is one that I asked and without it, I
- 5:54wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to
- 5:56tour all around the world in one of my
- 5:58favorite bands playing sold out shows. I
- 6:00wouldn't have started this YouTube
- 6:01channel. the question, "What do you
- 6:04really want, but you're too scared to
- 6:07ask for it?" Go after what you really
- 6:09want. Find your real motivation for it.
- 6:12And guess what? Your motivation changes
- 6:14as you get closer to it. Like, it's
- 6:16totally fine for you to say, "I want to
- 6:18get in the best shape of my life so I
- 6:20increase my uh dating life and I look
- 6:23hot." That's totally better motivation
- 6:25than to say, I want to lower my
- 6:27cholesterol levels and, you know, have a
- 6:28resting heart rate of it's totally fine
- 6:30if you want to make a bunch of money so
- 6:31that you escape your current situation
- 6:33or so that you can buy the car you
- 6:35always wanted to or live in the house
- 6:37that you've been dreaming of. But it's a
- 6:39natural process to work your way through
- 6:41those base level wants. The reason I'm
- 6:44saying this is because find your
- 6:46authentic drive. Dig for it. Not what
- 6:49sounds good on paper. Not if somebody
- 6:51reads it what they're going to think.
- 6:53Don't censor yourself. Write out what
- 6:55you really want. All right. So, now that
- 6:57you've identified your core stories,
- 6:59you've set up the 2.0 version of you
- 7:01through your ideal week or exercises
- 7:04like that, you're ready to install it
- 7:06into your brain. You need the third
- 7:08step. Now, I say install because your
- 7:10brain is like a supercomput. It
- 7:12processes over 11 million bits of
- 7:15information every single second, but
- 7:17you're only conscious of about 40. Every
- 7:19day you have between 60 and 70,000
- 7:22thoughts. He's law states that your
- 7:24neurons that fire together wire
- 7:26together. You might have had the
- 7:27experience of stubbing your toe and
- 7:29boom, you fire off a four-letter word.
- 7:32These associations are wiring your
- 7:35brain. In fact, here's a video right now
- 7:37of neurons connecting. They're like
- 7:39little spiderw webs that when you're
- 7:41learning start connecting together and
- 7:44then that connection fires off faster
- 7:47and faster the more you do that. That's
- 7:49a badass video, isn't it? Super cool.
- 7:51All of this is happening right now
- 7:53whether you know it or not. Your whole
- 7:55life you've trained yourself to fire and
- 7:57wire a certain way for your old
- 7:59identity. So if you want to install a
- 8:01new one or what you just created or
- 8:04break one, you need to rewire your mind.
- 8:07But there's one thing that helps you
- 8:08fire and wire and break these
- 8:10connections like 10 times faster. You
- 8:13want to know what it is? How can you
- 8:15learn by doing? I've said this before,
- 8:17but I thousand% believe it for you.
- 8:20Every 1 hour of doing beats 10 hours of
- 8:25planning, prepping, and researching. Who
- 8:28learns more? The person who spends two
- 8:30hours reading a book on surfing or the
- 8:32person who gets in the ocean, falls off
- 8:35the board, gets back up, learns by
- 8:38doing. Now remember our two things
- 8:40before this. The identity anchors. Well,
- 8:43how can you do something about them once
- 8:45you've identified them? You want to be
- 8:47more charismatic? Start talking to every
- 8:49single person you see throughout the
- 8:50day. You want to be better articulating
- 8:52yourself on camera? Turn it on and talk
- 8:54to it for 15 minutes a day. You want to
- 8:56be more disciplined, commit to a
- 8:57challenge like 75 hard or one that you
- 9:00come up with and make up for yourself.
- 9:02You want to find your purpose, come up
- 9:04with a list of 50 things you could try
- 9:06and go down the list checking them off.
- 9:08The key here is understanding that this
- 9:10rewiring of your whole brain and
- 9:12programming doesn't happen
- 9:14automatically. And yeah, it can happen
- 9:16through learning and consuming, but
- 9:18it'll happen 10 times faster through
- 9:20doing and testing. Are these stories
- 9:23really true? Let me do something about
- 9:25it. and testing. Do I really want this?
- 9:27Let me make this happen. That is
- 9:29identity shifting. Hope there was a few
- 9:31things in there we haven't spoken about
- 9:32in other videos. Some fresh ideas for
- 9:34you. And if you want to get more done in
- 9:38one week than most people do in an
- 9:40entire year, I'll link up right here a
- 9:42perfect follow-up. Over a million people
- 9:44have seen this video and thought it was
- 9:45useful. So, I think it's a good
- 9:47follow-up if you're looking to get more
- 9:48done. I'll see you there. Remember to do
- 9:50hard things, bet on yourself, and make
- 9:52your future self proud. Peace.
