- 0:00what are we talking about
- 0:02what are we talking about
- 0:04what are we talking about all sports
- 0:10marion jones born october 12 1975
- 0:15racing an event that can be traced back
- 0:18to probably the first humans on earth
- 0:20with competition being embedded into our
- 0:23dna as a natural state of being
- 0:26sigmund freud once said about
- 0:28competition that humans are born
- 0:30screaming for attention and full of
- 0:33organic drives for fulfillment in
- 0:35various areas
- 0:37this quote couldn't be more relatable to
- 0:39this story and you'll see why later
- 0:42it wasn't until 1921
- 0:44after the women's sports movement
- 0:46organized women's events that females
- 0:49were even taken seriously enough to
- 0:51compete on the same field as men in a
- 0:54sport that before that was male only
- 0:57in 1928 women were officially allowed to
- 1:00compete in the olympics in track and
- 1:02field held in amsterdam netherlands
- 1:06since then there's been many champions
- 1:08medalists and records broken
- 1:11there's also been countless bans from
- 1:13the sport for doping as well which is
- 1:16taking performance enhancing drugs that
- 1:18gave you more energy and boost to your
- 1:21skills for an amount of time
- 1:23basically eliminating the work needed to
- 1:26be successful in your sport
- 1:28you can already see where this would be
- 1:30a problem not only in sports but track
- 1:33in particular where fair chance is the
- 1:36only way to determine who's number one
- 1:38and is age sensitive
- 1:41they adjust the lanes beginning
- 1:43placements and use the speed of sound as
- 1:46a green light to ensure everyone
- 1:48involved be given a fair opportunity to
- 1:50compete
- 1:52when those lines are crossed or should i
- 1:54say enhanced those races might as well
- 1:57have never happened
- 1:59like knowing the answers to a test or
- 2:01winning lottery numbers or even knowing
- 2:04the future
- 2:05that amount of power is a killer to the
- 2:08other athletes besides you that didn't
- 2:10use the enhancements you did
- 2:12in track and field because of the short
- 2:15window of opportunity these athletes get
- 2:17to compete especially on a stage like
- 2:20the olympics every fair chance counts
- 2:23after a certain age usually faster than
- 2:26most top sports you don't get that body
- 2:29you had four years ago back
- 2:31so to beat someone with enhancing drugs
- 2:33in your vein can change that person's
- 2:36life forever that finished second and
- 2:38should have been first
- 2:40or fourth that should have meddled had
- 2:42it not been for you
- 2:44that's endorsements loss disappointment
- 2:47for you and your country and a short
- 2:49chance to make your passion a living
- 2:52based on your performances
- 2:54after denying doping she was erased from
- 2:56the record books and stripped of all her
- 2:59medals from 2000 to 2001 including the
- 3:02record five she achieved in sydney
- 3:05her eight relay teammates in that span
- 3:07were also stripped of their medals
- 3:09because of her infractions
- 3:11she was on pace to becoming one of the
- 3:14most dominant athletes of her time
- 3:16regardless of gender before being caught
- 3:19and denounced any athlete taking
- 3:21enhancement drugs beforehand all to be
- 3:24found guilty herself they commended
- 3:27her courageous act by admitting that she
- 3:30tested positive and i don't understand
- 3:32how you how you can commend that here's
- 3:34how marion jones went from atop the
- 3:37sports world to disgraced athlete in the
- 3:39shot of a gun let's talk about it she
- 3:42boy jc stunned it growth let's get it
- 3:50marion jones was a 510 female athlete
- 3:53from los angeles california that
- 3:55competed in track and field as a
- 3:57sprinter and long jumper
- 3:59with the loss of her stepfather she
- 4:01turned to sports as an outlet
- 4:04by 15 she was already one of the best
- 4:06athletes in the nation at both track and
- 4:09field and basketball
- 4:11a six-time all-american in track and
- 4:13also a national championship winning
- 4:16college basketball player at the
- 4:18university of north carolina in 1994.
- 4:22during this time she won three acc
- 4:24titles and was a two-time all-acc
- 4:27selection and the most valuable player
- 4:29of the 1997 acc tournament
- 4:33she finished her legendary college
- 4:35basketball career third in steals and
- 4:38scoring average and fourth all time in
- 4:40assists
- 4:41she could have been a high wnba draft
- 4:44pick in the wnba's first season in 1997
- 4:47but decided to focus on track and field
- 4:50and the 2000 sydney olympics
- 4:53stunt number one on the right track
- 4:55you're never gonna convince everybody
- 4:57that you're telling the truth
- 5:00youth
- 5:01a very delicate time in life
- 5:04one of those delicate features of being
- 5:06young is your mind can still be easily
- 5:09molded in those development stages and
- 5:12you can just as easily be influenced
- 5:14into doing the wrong things
- 5:17marion jones in my opinion was on the
- 5:19right track athletically all the way up
- 5:22to her college days then influences got
- 5:25to her and led her in the wrong
- 5:26direction
- 5:28whether that's definite or not marion
- 5:30herself stated that the results of what
- 5:33i'm about to speak on hurt her
- 5:35personally and her image as a drug-free
- 5:38athlete
- 5:39at some point during her time at unc she
- 5:42began dating one of her track coaches
- 5:44world champion shot putter cj hunter
- 5:47the relationship got serious enough to
- 5:50where he was forced to resign as a coach
- 5:52should he continue dating marion to
- 5:54comply with the university staff rules
- 5:57against relationships with student
- 5:59athletes
- 6:00the two continued dating and the year
- 6:03after she graduated unc in 1997 they got
- 6:07married and trained together for the
- 6:082000 sydney olympics
- 6:11and this is the exact point i think all
- 6:14things went off track for jones
- 6:16up to her graduating college marion
- 6:19dominated any sport she was involved in
- 6:22track included
- 6:23in high school she won the cif state
- 6:26meet 100 meter event four years in a row
- 6:29along with being the gatorade player of
- 6:31the year protract three straight years
- 6:34in basketball she was equally as good
- 6:37even earning a scholarship to north
- 6:39carolina as a basketball player
- 6:42she never needed performance enhancing
- 6:44drugs unless we're to think she's been
- 6:47taking them since 12 years old because
- 6:49she's been dominating female sports
- 6:52since then
- 6:53but as mentioned a young mind is a very
- 6:56delicate and vulnerable thing
- 6:59cj hunter met marion when she was 16
- 7:02and after he got the track coaching job
- 7:04in 1995 the two started a serious
- 7:07relationship
- 7:09during the olympics and right after
- 7:11marion won her first of five medals she
- 7:13took a pause to attend a press
- 7:15conference to defend her husband found
- 7:18guilty four consecutive times for
- 7:20steroid use to which he couldn't explain
- 7:24this was the first time the drug
- 7:25enhancement light was on her publicly
- 7:28and it hurt her image even if she was
- 7:30clean
- 7:31it also initiated investigations into
- 7:34jones who now had to begin answering
- 7:37questions pertaining to her and doping
- 7:40she strongly denied doping and condemned
- 7:43any athlete for doing it as well
- 7:46of course we'd later find out she had
- 7:48been doping the entire time along with
- 7:50her husband who later turned on her and
- 7:53confessed
- 7:55the image hit was too much for their
- 7:57relationship so she filed for divorce in
- 7:592002
- 8:01after her divorce she had a child in
- 8:042003 with another disgraced athlete tim
- 8:07montgomery found guilty of steroid use
- 8:10and banned in 2005 for two years
- 8:13in 2004 cj hunter admitted to seeing
- 8:17marion take ped injections during the
- 8:19olympics which all but sealed her fate
- 8:22along with other witnesses including
- 8:25balco labs founder
- 8:27she was sentenced to six months in
- 8:29federal prison for lying to the feds
- 8:31when i saw stun number two
- 8:33doping and denying what do i wish i
- 8:35would have done at that moment i wish i
- 8:37would have
- 8:39we've talked about how unfair using any
- 8:41performance advantage is to fellow
- 8:43athletes but even worse is what marion
- 8:46jones did during those times
- 8:48not only did she condemn any athlete
- 8:51that would cheat their peers while she
- 8:53was in fact cheating her peers when
- 8:55confronted with evidence that she did
- 8:57she adamantly lied about it to federal
- 9:00agents and in press conferences
- 9:02in 2003 a bay area lab was accused by
- 9:06sprint coach terence graham of supplying
- 9:09undetected enhancement supplements to
- 9:11athletes including marion jones
- 9:14her along with founder victor conte were
- 9:17given the harshest punishment resulting
- 9:19from the investigation with marion
- 9:22overall serving the most significant
- 9:24time
- 9:25six months in a federal prison compared
- 9:27to barry bonds's overturned on appeal
- 9:30case tammy thomas's six months house
- 9:33arrest and trevor graham's one-year
- 9:35house arrest
- 9:36had she not been so defiant and
- 9:38condemning in the media about her stance
- 9:41as a clean athlete she may have gotten a
- 9:43lighter sentence
- 9:45had she confessed and say she was just
- 9:47taken what was advised she may not have
- 9:50received the punishment she did at all
- 9:52but i guess that would be lying anyway
- 9:54right because later she'd admit that she
- 9:57knew what she was taking and all the
- 9:59accounts and witness statements were in
- 10:01fact true
- 10:02she was banned for two years from track
- 10:05and field and announced her retirement
- 10:07from competition effective immediately
- 10:10and just like that the next great
- 10:12american athlete high on success was
- 10:15brought down stunt number three
- 10:17narcissistic personality disorder that i
- 10:20have betrayed your trust i'm extremely
- 10:23disappointed today
- 10:25we can make tons of excuses as to why
- 10:27marion jones would risk everything she'd
- 10:30built in sports especially when she
- 10:32would have been a great athlete anyway
- 10:34to use performance enhancements
- 10:37one excuse i don't think can be easily
- 10:39overlooked is i really believe marion
- 10:42jones was a narcissist
- 10:44narcissism usually gets a negative
- 10:46connotation but it's a fact of some of
- 10:49our being a fact of life
- 10:51back to sigmund freud it's evident
- 10:54marion was screaming for and loved every
- 10:56second of the attention that came with
- 10:58being the best at whatever she did
- 11:01inflated sense of self-importance you
- 11:04have to have that to stand in all those
- 11:07press conferences and not even blink
- 11:09defending your innocence at the same
- 11:11time giving the electric chair to any
- 11:14athlete that did she
- 11:16troubled relationships
- 11:18two of which were also found guilty of
- 11:21taking enhancements and didn't last very
- 11:23long in marion's life
- 11:25and lastly a lack of empathy for others
- 11:29one has to have that to deceive someone
- 11:31else in any way
- 11:33whether it's lying stealing fraud
- 11:36manipulation or any of the sort
- 11:39it takes a person with either no heart
- 11:41at all or a narcissist to continuously
- 11:44do those things and glow when receiving
- 11:47praise for it
- 11:48again it's not necessarily a bad thing
- 11:51and all narcissists aren't bad people
- 11:54it's just a personality trait
- 11:57one i think marion jones definitely
- 11:59exhibited and one i think stunned her
- 12:02growth because again she didn't need to
- 12:04do it she was made to be a dominant
- 12:06athlete she already was before i think
- 12:09she began using
- 12:11but with her narcissistic personality it
- 12:14was near inevitable she would be
- 12:15attracted to the idea of enhancing your
- 12:18performance to ensure she always shined
- 12:21in the spotlight
- 12:23all in all marion jones was still a
- 12:25great athlete to me
- 12:27i remember as a teen watching this play
- 12:29out and i couldn't believe it was true
- 12:32because she's always come off as a
- 12:33pretty genuine person
- 12:35like she cared just enough to lend her
- 12:38attention even when everyone wanted hers
- 12:41she always smiled deep enough to show
- 12:43her imperfections and i always thought
- 12:46that was special about her it made her
- 12:48different but relatable
- 12:50and she always had that competitive fire
- 12:53i've only witnessed truly in three
- 12:55athletes of my time jordan kobe and
- 12:58marion jones
- 13:00the killer she had that mamba mentality
- 13:03and focus she owned that but at some
- 13:06point she got nervous
- 13:08nervous about a life where she lost and
- 13:11wasn't the best
- 13:12that and bad influence ruined her track
- 13:15career
- 13:16she played two seasons in the wnba after
- 13:19prison
- 13:20she's now a personal trainer author
- 13:23mother and speaker where she uses every
- 13:26opportunity she gets to warn young
- 13:29athletes about the dangers on the road
- 13:31she went down but also that it's
- 13:33important to bounce back and not let
- 13:36that be your life story
- 13:38salute to marion jones much respect but
- 13:40for these reasons her growth was
- 13:43stunning she boy jc stunned it growth in
- 13:45amount ultimately i hold myself
- 13:47responsible at that point i decided i
- 13:50had made the ultimate decision to lie
