"I was USED by Chris Watts, and that hurts." - Christa Richello, Cellmate Secrets — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:03it's pretty interesting because my mom
- 0:04did stand up for charles manson through
- 0:06all that
- 0:07and i'm standing up for chris watch
- 0:11hello and welcome to true crime rocket
- 0:13science the most
- 0:14authentic voice in true crime
- 0:17in this episode we're going to look at
- 0:19something that i've actually never
- 0:21spoken about before
- 0:23and that is christa rashello
- 0:27and it is there's a reason that i
- 0:30haven't ever spoken about it before
- 0:33even though a lot of other channels have
- 0:35um
- 0:36my channel deals with um
- 0:40authentic you know proper evidence and
- 0:43and proper scenarios right and
- 0:47we all know that christa spoke for chris
- 0:51watts
- 0:51according to her she spoke for him and
- 0:54she then went onto a channel
- 0:56and a youtube channel and basically
- 1:00provided the goods on chris watch to
- 1:03this channel
- 1:04and and they had a very cozy
- 1:07relationship you know it was
- 1:08that chris watts trust the channel and
- 1:11chris watts trust her
- 1:13and blah blah blah blah blah and and
- 1:15then
- 1:16you know later on it turns out that
- 1:19certain things weren't the case
- 1:20right um that chris watts i think wasn't
- 1:23very happy with
- 1:24what was going on he wasn't very happy
- 1:26with what the channel was saying which
- 1:29prompted him to eventually say the
- 1:31following
- 1:32i'm not going to play that recording
- 1:34here i will put a link to the recording
- 1:37in the description but it's basically
- 1:39where chris watts says
- 1:41referring to the same channel that
- 1:43krista says
- 1:44is her platform that you know that
- 1:47channel doesn't reflect his directives
- 1:49it's not
- 1:51uh it doesn't have his blessing blah
- 1:53blah blah and
- 1:54so this particular recording was put up
- 1:57on another channel
- 1:59which apparently did have his blessing
- 2:01and then quite funny
- 2:03it was quite an amusing thing how
- 2:05someone
- 2:06edited it to swap around
- 2:09the one creator for the other and then
- 2:12make it into something completely
- 2:14different
- 2:14and of course this creator then repeated
- 2:17that
- 2:18edited thing on his channel i do think
- 2:21what you're likely to see
- 2:22is this particular channel um picking up
- 2:25a lot of
- 2:26subscribers people who are probably
- 2:28quite new to the case
- 2:29based on watching the self-made secrets
- 2:32thing
- 2:33and you know people just who don't know
- 2:34any better
- 2:36interestingly it's at a time where he's
- 2:38lost something like 500 subscribers
- 2:41in the last couple of days based on
- 2:44what was said on another channel by
- 2:46family members
- 2:48so it's just all a very weird situation
- 2:52now if you you know you can obviously go
- 2:54into
- 2:55some of the things that for example
- 2:57scott reich went into
- 2:59uh sort of looking at the fact that her
- 3:01own mother was
- 3:03fascinated and perhaps even more than
- 3:05that with charles manson
- 3:07and then she seems to follow in
- 3:11his footsteps or her footsteps and then
- 3:14her own father was in prison i don't
- 3:16know whether she says that her father
- 3:18was a
- 3:19a fan of charles manson but one gets the
- 3:21idea that both
- 3:22both her parents were sort of fascinated
- 3:26with charles manson and also
- 3:28um defended him and then she says giving
- 3:31a little bit of
- 3:32um you know psychological insight into
- 3:35her own psyche saying well i guess i'm
- 3:38not that different to
- 3:39to my mother now what i do think is
- 3:41quite interesting from
- 3:43if you want to apply psychology to
- 3:45everything that's going on here
- 3:46i think something that you you can't get
- 3:49away from
- 3:50is that christa got quite a lot of
- 3:53attention
- 3:54through chris watts so she writes to
- 3:56chris watts
- 3:57she then appears on a youtube channel
- 4:00and gets
- 4:00a lot of attention that way and then
- 4:03from there
- 4:04appears in television and gets a lot of
- 4:06attention that way
- 4:07and you've kind of got to ask is that
- 4:09actually what's going on
- 4:10is this a person who really wants
- 4:13attention
- 4:14and you know is one way of getting that
- 4:16attention and i'm not saying
- 4:18she sat down and said i want attention
- 4:21and i'm gonna
- 4:22i'm gonna use xyz to get that attention
- 4:26um maybe it happens like uh
- 4:28subconsciously but
- 4:29um that is the result of all of this
- 4:32which is
- 4:33she contacts a high-profile person
- 4:36she appears on a youtube channel and
- 4:38then she appears on television isn't
- 4:40that exactly what she wanted
- 4:42that she kind of becomes this font of
- 4:45information kind of thing
- 4:51he knew that i could get information out
- 4:53for people to hear
- 4:54i feel that it's very possible that he
- 4:56took that and ran with it for what he
- 4:58needed
- 4:59and what that need is i don't know but i
- 5:02look back on it and i'm saying to myself
- 5:04you know i probably was used by chris
- 5:07absolutely and that hurts so i don't
- 5:11actually know
- 5:12the details and to be honest i don't
- 5:14really want to know
- 5:15i don't really care about them i really
- 5:17don't care about the details
- 5:19but from just speaking in a general way
- 5:23i don't know whether i believe krista
- 5:25when she says
- 5:26that you know that she she really
- 5:29believes that chris watts
- 5:31used her in order to get his message
- 5:33across
- 5:34on armchair detective it may be that he
- 5:37did
- 5:38and it may be that he did until he
- 5:40didn't want to all of that is i guess
- 5:41possible
- 5:43um but uh the other side of it is
- 5:47if that's true then why on earth would
- 5:49he go to the trouble to leave a message
- 5:52especially saying that that he didn't
- 5:53support that particular channel
- 5:55why on earth would he say that and the
- 5:58the thing that i think is certainly
- 5:59worth
- 6:00thinking about is isn't it the opposite
- 6:03isn't this a case
- 6:04of someone who gets close to chris watts
- 6:06and then the next thing
- 6:08spills the beans appears on these
- 6:10platforms
- 6:11um you know provides all this
- 6:13information
- 6:14and and then you know also appears on
- 6:16television and then you've sort of got
- 6:18to ask
- 6:19you know if you compare it to some mate
- 6:21secrets with casey anthony you've got to
- 6:23kind of ask
- 6:24um did chris watts
- 6:28approve of of all of this happening
- 6:31does or does he approve of his friend
- 6:35saying this and of course you do have a
- 6:37similar situation
- 6:39in a in a weird way in the casey anthony
- 6:42case if you've watched that sell made
- 6:43secrets
- 6:44where someone called robin
- 6:48collected casey's letters and then when
- 6:50casey was acquitted was very unhappy
- 6:53about it
- 6:53and quite angry and wondered why she
- 6:56didn't testify and then you sort of
- 6:57wonder
- 6:58why is she a genuine friend to casey
- 7:01and the impression i get is that and you
- 7:04see this quite a lot in
- 7:06criminal cases where there's a snitch is
- 7:08that
- 7:09what is happening with the snitch is the
- 7:11snitch finds himself in a situation
- 7:14alongside a much higher profile criminal
- 7:17and then what appears to happen i'm not
- 7:19saying it necessarily happens
- 7:21but what appears to happen is they then
- 7:23opportunistically think
- 7:25well if i can get close to this person i
- 7:27can get some
- 7:28intel information then i can possibly
- 7:31give it to my jailer
- 7:33a prosecutor someone in law enforcement
- 7:35and i can get a benefit out of that in
- 7:37other words
- 7:37if i play this particular individual and
- 7:40i can get some
- 7:42information that the prosecutors need i
- 7:44can then get some perks or
- 7:46special treatment right and that is
- 7:49exactly what happened
- 7:50in terms of the snitch in the patrick
- 7:52phrase case
- 7:54um that is not in question that is
- 7:56something that he specifically
- 7:58negotiated for right and so you've kind
- 8:01of got to ask yourself
- 8:02why are some of these snitches not
- 8:05star witnesses in court cases why don't
- 8:08you hear
- 8:09about snitches all the time and the
- 8:11answer is
- 8:12you sometimes do but the problem is they
- 8:15have an agenda
- 8:16and the problem is that often you know
- 8:19they're not in
- 8:19prison for for fun they're there for a
- 8:22reason
- 8:23and of course in these um and in these
- 8:26uh
- 8:26episodes some made secrets the prisoners
- 8:29are sort of
- 8:30um shown as um the cell mates are shown
- 8:34to be
- 8:35nice people innocent people they didn't
- 8:37deserve the crime
- 8:39that happened to them and of course they
- 8:40honest and do they believe this and do
- 8:42they believe that
- 8:44it's a little bit of a farce but i think
- 8:46it's
- 8:47perfect fodder for lifetime a perfect
- 8:50tabloid fodder
- 8:52but coming back to the original issue is
- 8:54who used who
- 8:56and what is just fascinating with the
- 8:59watts case is how many women have
- 9:03been sort of approaching him and then
- 9:06what happens as a result of that you've
- 9:09had cheryl and cadill
- 9:11approach chris watts he was led to
- 9:13believe that there'd be a book about
- 9:16christian aspects and then how much of
- 9:19the book was about that
- 9:21then you have someone else and in this
- 9:23case christa same thing
- 9:25there was supposed to be a book and
- 9:26that's supposed to be very heavily
- 9:29um you know dealing with a particular
- 9:32area
- 9:32and then did that happen and so so what
- 9:35i'm saying is you kind of have this
- 9:38scenario where um certain things are
- 9:41agreed and then and then what actually
- 9:44ultimately happens
- 9:46right what ultimately happens and i do
- 9:48think christa sort of
- 9:50sums it up very well where she says you
- 9:52know
- 9:53um i had a platform with and then she
- 9:56mentions this
- 9:58um channel and quite funny in
- 10:01one of the um websites i think it's
- 10:05entertainment tonight or something
- 10:08they actually get the name of the
- 10:11channel wrong
- 10:13they call it something true detective
- 10:14but in any event
- 10:17i think that is what she wanted all
- 10:18along she wants a platform and so she
- 10:20gets a platform
- 10:22because she's gotten access to
- 10:25chris watson and obviously what is
- 10:26happening is double dealing
- 10:28you form a friendship or isn't it is it
- 10:32not double dealing
- 10:33you form a friendship with this person
- 10:34you form a a bond of trust
- 10:37and then you go behind the back and you
- 10:39say you know what i don't really believe
- 10:40him
- 10:41i don't think this and i don't think
- 10:42that and then you go back and forth and
- 10:44back and forth and back and forth
- 10:46the other thing that i think is quite
- 10:48interesting is although
- 10:50all the media are saying that that uh
- 10:53christa
- 10:54is engaged to um the cellmate
- 10:58that that i think his name is dylan
- 11:02that shared the cell with uh chris watts
- 11:05or
- 11:06you know was in a cell next to him that
- 11:08that engagement's no longer the case
- 11:10that's
- 11:11just not happening so one's also going
- 11:14to wonder
- 11:15in terms of that engagement was that a
- 11:17genuine engagement or was
- 11:19that also you know playing around with
- 11:22people
- 11:22in order to extract information
- 11:26there was a really bizarre piece of news
- 11:29where um her former fiancee dylan
- 11:33and chris watts were disciplined in july
- 11:36after watching underwear and vaseline
- 11:38were found in
- 11:39tillman's cell make of that what you
- 11:41will but i'll put a link to that
- 11:43in the description or in a pinned
- 11:46comment
- 11:48doesn't make sense you were having an
- 11:50affair with a married man
- 11:52whose family had this horrific tragedy
- 11:56i would apologize and how can i help
- 11:59that's what i would do
- 12:00not fall off the grid completely
- 12:03now what i find weirdly ironic with
- 12:07christa's position here is that she's
- 12:10befriending chris watts and then
- 12:14the person that she seems to have a
- 12:16problem with is nicole kessinger
- 12:18and you know as early as november
- 12:22nicole kissinger was quoted in an
- 12:25exclusive interview with the denver post
- 12:27saying
- 12:28i just wanted to help with a pregnant
- 12:31woman and two children missing
- 12:32i was going to do anything that i could
- 12:34and so she
- 12:36seems to be christa seems to be accusing
- 12:39nicole kissinger of not helping when
- 12:42there's
- 12:43interview of the interview of the
- 12:44interview of the interview
- 12:46with the cbi and i know people will say
- 12:50well she wasn't completely honest there
- 12:53were
- 12:53things that she was holding back but
- 12:55some of that was
- 12:57things that are fairly lured
- 13:00and you know does the public have the
- 13:02right to know
- 13:04those sort of details and i know what
- 13:06you'll say yes they do
- 13:07of course if it was you you would feel
- 13:09exactly the same
- 13:11but the thing that i think is important
- 13:13to stress and i
- 13:15i stressed it in a shakedown blog
- 13:18episode where i showed the actual text
- 13:22between kessinger and kobach where she's
- 13:24asking him repeatedly
- 13:25uh you know can we meet first thing in
- 13:27the morning can we meet this time can we
- 13:29meet that time and he's actually
- 13:31too busy always fobbing her off and
- 13:33she's trying to make arrangements for
- 13:35them to meet
- 13:36and so there is someone who's making an
- 13:38effort to come forward and trying to
- 13:40help
- 13:41repeatedly she's calling him early in
- 13:43the morning saying
- 13:44you know something else has occurred to
- 13:45me but of course if you don't know the
- 13:48discovery very well if you don't know
- 13:50the case very well then it's very easy
- 13:52to
- 13:52point the finger and make accusations
- 13:56on the other point that she made about
- 13:58you know she should have said
- 14:00sorry she might have a point
- 14:04i don't see her saying sorry in the
- 14:08in the denver post article i can't
- 14:12really find
- 14:13any um sort of explicit
- 14:16apology in the um
- 14:20sort of questioning the questions and
- 14:22answers there's nothing like that there
- 14:25and so maybe not maybe i think
- 14:28kessinger could definitely have been
- 14:30more um
- 14:32sort of been very clear that that she
- 14:35feels very bad about what's happened
- 14:37and and is apologetic she could
- 14:40definitely have done that
- 14:43having said that i think you've kind of
- 14:46heard that from chris watts you've heard
- 14:48him apologizing and saying he's sorry
- 14:51you even heard that minutes after his
- 14:53first confession to
- 14:54his father and um
- 14:58we know how much that was worth i mean
- 15:00it was an apology within lies
- 15:02right he also apologized to
- 15:06coda for for lying to him and then but
- 15:08but then
- 15:09the next thing was lies as well so so
- 15:12you know
- 15:13an apology needs to be sincere
- 15:17i also think there is a certain amount
- 15:19of bias where
- 15:21people because they want to believe
- 15:23chris watts is
- 15:24horrible that they try and make him out
- 15:26to be even more horrible than he is so
- 15:28they'll say for example you know he
- 15:30never shed one tear
- 15:32and they might actually be quoting
- 15:34something that
- 15:35tammy lee said to him at the time but of
- 15:37course in court you actually can see a
- 15:39tear coming down his face so
- 15:41this whole idea that he never shed a
- 15:43tear and he was never emotional
- 15:45um isn't true it's based on some truth
- 15:48because he wasn't very emotional
- 15:50but the same can be said with kissinger
- 15:52maybe she
- 15:54wasn't as emotional as she should have
- 15:56been i kind of get the feeling she was
- 15:58quite shocked and other things as well i
- 16:02certainly don't want to sound like i'm
- 16:03defending her
- 16:04but at the same time i don't think it's
- 16:06accurate to say that
- 16:08she didn't seem sorry especially when we
- 16:10listen to this
- 16:13he's so disgusting i'm so ashamed of him
- 16:16why
- 16:16why why why how i don't even understand
- 16:19how you could like bring yourself to do
- 16:21that to somebody who's like
- 16:23that [ __ ] now if you spent any time
- 16:26listening to the
- 16:27original audio i don't mean some of
- 16:29these clips
- 16:31then there's quite a length of time that
- 16:32it takes her to regain her composure
- 16:36and i know there are a lot of people who
- 16:38no matter what you say
- 16:39will insist on blaming nicole kissinger
- 16:42and disliking her but i don't think you
- 16:44can say that
- 16:45she doesn't express regret
- 16:48and that she's unhappy about what has
- 16:51happened i don't think you can say that
- 16:54i do think it's quite a good point has
- 16:56she expressed
- 16:58something to shanann's family as she
- 17:01communicated with them and said
- 17:03she's sorry if she hasn't maybe that
- 17:05would be a good thing
- 17:07but probably if she has it would have
- 17:08been indirectly through
- 17:10a lawyer the other side of it is if you
- 17:13were on the receiving end of that would
- 17:15it really mean anything
- 17:17so i want to ask you for your input what
- 17:19do you think do you think
- 17:21that chris watts has been played
- 17:24not just by one one person
- 17:28but by several people or do you think
- 17:31that he
- 17:32was playing other people which one do
- 17:34you think it is
- 17:36my impression is that chris watts
- 17:38definitely lacks the
- 17:39ability to know who to trust
- 17:43and who to sort of how to go about
- 17:47how to even go about trusting a person i
- 17:50don't think he's got a lot of experience
- 17:51with that and i think it shows
- 17:54but uh at the same time one's got to ask
- 17:57who are the real monsters here
- 17:59if you've got a someone like chris watts
- 18:01who we know
- 18:02did what he did and then you've got
- 18:03people trying to carry favor with him
- 18:06trying to become his pal
- 18:08meanwhile if that's not bad enough it
- 18:11turns out that they're actually
- 18:12deceiving him in order to
- 18:14do something else whatever that is and
- 18:16then can one say that that is
- 18:19um something that is to be commended can
- 18:22one say that that is
- 18:24something that society needs right
- 18:27is that the way that things should be
- 18:30that you sort of
- 18:31um you know try and wrangle your way
- 18:34into
- 18:35a high-profile criminal's inner circle
- 18:40misrepresent yourself misrepresent all
- 18:43sorts of things
- 18:44and then you come out and you tell you
- 18:47you have your expose and you are the
- 18:50hero of the story
- 18:51it's a little bit like i think going to
- 18:53mount everest
- 18:55and stepping over dead bodies and um
- 19:00you know saying things and doing certain
- 19:02things that
- 19:04that aren't actually very redeeming
- 19:08but then coming back and still saying
- 19:09well you know i deserve a naughty badge
- 19:11i deserve
- 19:12a medal around my neck for my bravery
- 19:15and for what incredible person i am
- 19:18is is that really the case and you know
- 19:21word that i've heard
- 19:22so much you know people pointing to
- 19:24chris watts and accusing him of being a
- 19:26narcissist chris watts
- 19:27is a narcissist chris watches this or
- 19:29that kind of narcissist kind of thing
- 19:31it goes on and on and on and on and then
- 19:34you've sort of got to ask yourself
- 19:36these people making these accusations
- 19:40there wouldn't happen to be any kind of
- 19:42vanity
- 19:43self-interest need for attention any of
