I Was Exhausted From Carrying Our Whole Family in My Husband's Place-Until a Bus Conversation... — Transcript

- 0:00My husband had been unemployed for two
- 0:02years, and every night I came home to
- 0:04find him on the couch, the TV murmuring
- 0:06and the same sentence waiting for me.
- 0:09Didn't feel like the right fit. I set
- 0:11down two heavy grocery bags and looked
- 0:14at him. That's Saturday. I left a sticky
- 0:17note on the counter and walked out.
- 0:19Seven words. I have things to do. I'll
- 0:22be back tonight. Before I tell you what
- 0:24happened, tell me in the comments where
- 0:25you're watching from. I'm Marannne
- 0:28Ellison, an accountant in Scranton. Two
- 0:30years earlier, my husband Grant's
- 0:32company downsized. He promised it was
- 0:34temporary. Weeks became months. Every
- 0:37opportunity was too small, too far, too
- 0:40beneath him. I'm not flipping burgers.
- 0:43Meanwhile, I worked full-time and ran
- 0:45the house. Our son Owen did odd jobs for
- 0:47his own sneakers. Our daughter Piper
- 0:50needed new shoes. At breakfast, Owen
- 0:52muttered, "You've been saying that for 2
- 0:54years." My friend Camille said it
- 0:57plainly. As long as you're carrying the
- 0:59weight, he'll let you. On the bus home,
- 1:02I overheard a man on the phone with his
- 1:04partner. Thank you for being so patient.
- 1:06You're the most understanding woman in
- 1:08the world. I couldn't remember the last
- 1:11time anyone said that to me. So on
- 1:13Saturday, I turned off my phone and
- 1:15walked out. I ate breakfast alone, spent
- 1:17an hour in a bookstore, and sat by a
- 1:20pond watching ducks. I met my father for
- 1:22coffee. He told me about the day my
- 1:24mother packed a suitcase. She said, "Be
- 1:26a man or lose your family." That shock
- 1:29changed everything. One person rowing
- 1:31alone just spins in circles. At home,
- 1:34Grant had burned breakfast, flooded the
- 1:36sink with dishes, and left laundry
- 1:38rotting in the washer. Piper cried over
- 1:40a missing sock. Owen said, "Mom always
- 1:43separates the recycling. We're out of
- 1:45paper towels. She keeps track of that,
- 1:47too." For the first time, Grant saw the
- 1:50invisible labor. A friend called with a
- 1:53job lead at a building supplies company.
- 1:55Surrounded by chaos, he said, "Let's
- 1:57talk. Maybe it's time." When I walked in
- 2:00that evening, everyone rushed to me. "I
- 2:02figure it out every day," I told Grant
- 2:04calmly. "No one ever asks me how." "I
- 2:07didn't clean the kitchen. The next
- 2:09morning, I said it plainly. I don't want
- 2:11Owen thinking it's acceptable for a man
- 2:13to lie on a couch while someone else
- 2:15does everything. You have one month to
- 2:17find a job. Any job. If you don't, I'll
- 2:19make a decision about our marriage." He
- 2:21asked if I would leave. I won't keep
- 2:23living like this. Monday, my manager
- 2:25offered me a senior accountant role with
- 2:27a raise. I said yes. When I got home,
- 2:30Grant was at the table with a stack of
- 2:32resumes. I applied to four jobs today.
- 2:35He admitted something quietly. It felt
- 2:37like admitting I'd failed. "Shame isn't
- 2:40an excuse to stop showing up," I said. 3
- 2:43weeks later, Grant took the job. It paid
- 2:45less than his old one, but it was a job.
- 2:48He caught the early bus, folded laundry,
- 2:50and helped Piper with her science
- 2:52project. He cooks twice a week. It isn't
- 2:54perfect, but it's movement. I walk to
- 2:57the farmers market on Saturdays. I stay
- 2:59late at work because I want to. I don't
- 3:01know whether our marriage will last. But
- 3:03for the first time in years, the
- 3:05uncertainty doesn't scare me. My worth
- 3:08is no longer negotiable. If your partner
- 3:11had spent 2 years on the couch, would
- 3:13you have drawn the line, too? Tell me in
- 3:15the comments.
