I Upgraded a Business Owner's Home Office — Transcript

- 0:00Many home offices don't match the
- 0:02professional inside them. They're
- 0:04functional, they have a desk, a chair,
- 0:06maybe a lamp, but they don't reflect the
- 0:09caliber of the person that is using
- 0:11them. If you're someone who takes video
- 0:14calls, speaks with clients, or makes
- 0:15decisions from that room, you know how
- 0:18much this matters. The space we sit in
- 0:21speaks on our behalf. It tells people
- 0:24who we are, how we operate, and what
- 0:26level we are playing at. Today, I'm
- 0:29going to show you how we took a very
- 0:31typical home office and raised the
- 0:33standard to match its owner. Brandon
- 0:36contacted us through our website with a
- 0:38very typical request. He had a home
- 0:40office that he wanted to upgrade.
- 0:43Technically, it was functional. There
- 0:44was a desk, a chair, a sofa, a lamp, and
- 0:48a rug. This is something that we
- 0:49commonly see among busy men,
- 0:52high-performing sales people, owners of
- 0:54businesses, executives, independent
- 0:56contractors. Their time and mindshare
- 1:00revolves around their ventures. It's
- 1:03very difficult to think through the
- 1:04design of a room or home because it
- 1:07sacrifices the attention otherwise given
- 1:10to the business. Brandon owns a pressure
- 1:13washing company that services commercial
- 1:15parking garages and buildings across a
- 1:18sizeable geographic area. He's always on
- 1:22the move. When he is in his home office,
- 1:25he's taking important video calls and
- 1:27meetings. His office represents both him
- 1:30and his company. Let's see what we did.
- 1:34Brandon began with a dark green
- 1:36slate-like colored wall. He was onto
- 1:39something, introducing depth and mood
- 1:41into the area. Our decision was to
- 1:44embrace and amplify that, not by using
- 1:46the exact color he chose, but through
- 1:49the principle of what he was trying to
- 1:51achieve. We didn't dip our toes, we took
- 1:54a swan dive. Three of the four walls are
- 1:58now drenched in a dark deep tone, and
- 2:01the fourth wall, remaining light,
- 2:03becomes the accent. The balance of power
- 2:06has flipped completely. He also had the
- 2:08right idea in designating this wall as
- 2:10the primary backdrop. It makes sense,
- 2:13but how does it feel? A bit flat,
- 2:15slightly overpowering, because the eye
- 2:17has nothing to interact with. That's
- 2:20okay. It means we have the opportunity
- 2:22to create a gripping architectural
- 2:24backbone. How did we do this? In three
- 2:27key moves. First, symmetrical built-in
- 2:30bookcases introduced on both sides of
- 2:33the wall. Second, the desk and artwork
- 2:36were centered within that composition.
- 2:38And third, vertical paneling extends
- 2:41across the entire wall deliberately.
- 2:44Now, it reads as intended millwork. If
- 2:47you've watched our other videos, you
- 2:48maybe having an aha moment. This wall is
- 2:51what? The anchor of the room.
- 2:55Another important decision was
- 2:56establishing a clear center line
- 2:59formation. When you look at the room,
- 3:02nearly everything aligns along a single
- 3:05visual axis. The chandelier sits on that
- 3:08center line. The artwork sits directly
- 3:11below that, with sizing that brings you
- 3:14to the center point. The desk, the
- 3:16chair, the rug, and the shelving balance
- 3:19the quadrants created by the axis. This
- 3:22kind of alignment communicates order
- 3:25which is exactly what you want in a
- 3:27masculine office. Before the redesign,
- 3:30it was just objects thrown into a space.
- 3:34Now, you feel a sense of spatial
- 3:36control.
- 3:37Most people already have a sense of what
- 3:39they like. They just don't know how to
- 3:41bring it together. The path from idea to
- 3:44execution can feel unclear and
- 3:47overwhelming. That's where we come in.
- 3:49We help shape that direction and turn it
- 3:52into something refined and then fully
- 3:55realized. If you're looking at your own
- 3:57space and want help getting there, you
- 3:59can reach out to us through the
- 4:01description below.
- 4:03The desk is the one piece Brandon
- 4:05already had and asked us to use. The
- 4:08elements in the room were built around
- 4:09it. The paneling, the symmetrical
- 4:12shelving, the centered composition.
- 4:14Paired with a traditional rectangular
- 4:17desk, it could run the risk of being
- 4:20overly rigid. The sculptural desk
- 4:23Brandon already had introduces movement
- 4:26through its geometry. A modern styled
- 4:29counterpoint to traditional framework.
- 4:32The room retains its professional tone
- 4:34without becoming too serious.
- 4:37The bookcases solve several issues.
- 4:40Previously, the accent wall felt
- 4:42enormously empty. The wall was too large
- 4:45to remain blank relative to the
- 4:47furniture. The built-ins add dimensional
- 4:50depth, texture through books and
- 4:52objects, and scale that matches the
- 4:55height of the room. The ceiling design
- 4:58plays a critical role, the role of
- 4:59expansion and warmth. Two things
- 5:02difficult to achieve at the same time.
- 5:04Why? Expanding a room can sacrifice its
- 5:07hospitality. Adding the coffered ceiling
- 5:10raises the perceived ceiling height,
- 5:12great for grandeur, not always as
- 5:15welcoming. Think of it like making sweet
- 5:18tea for two guests. Last minute, you
- 5:20realize there will be four guests. So,
- 5:22you double the water. Have you increased
- 5:24the volume? Yes. Have you diluted the
- 5:27balance? Also, yes. Without adding more
- 5:30tea and sugar, the blend is lost. The
- 5:33wood ceiling corrects that. It restores
- 5:36the warmth and brings the room back to
- 5:38the intended feel.
- 5:40When looking upward, the combination of
- 5:42dark and warmth sets a better stage for
- 5:44the multi-tiered chandelier, as well.
- 5:47On the subject of lighting, we always
- 5:49dedicate attention toward it. Very
- 5:52rarely will you see us rely on a single
- 5:54overhead light. We want it to feel
- 5:56methodical and sequential. Whoever is to
- 6:00enter this room, their eyes will look
- 6:02here, then here, and finish here. The
- 6:05chandelier is the centered and highest
- 6:08statement. Picture lights above artwork
- 6:10emphasize focal points. The wall sconces
- 6:13are the gradual shift of warm lighting
- 6:16downward. The floor lamp, then desk
- 6:18lamp, are task oriented. As the lowest
- 6:21placed lighting, they finish the
- 6:24sequence. This lighting narrative gives
- 6:26the room a cinematic quality.
- 6:29The color palette in this room has been
- 6:31carefully balanced across three tonal
- 6:33categories. The deep tones include the
- 6:36wall color, dark trim, and black desk
- 6:38chair. The warm tones live in the
- 6:40cigar-hued leather sofa, the wood
- 6:43ceiling, and the golden accents. The
- 6:45lighter tones are, of course, the
- 6:47pre-existing desk, the mocha ivory rug,
- 6:50and the vacenay flooring, which is a
- 6:53light oak. Because these three tonal
- 6:56families are balanced, the room never
- 6:57feels too dark or overly beige. Instead,
- 7:02a rich, breathable appearance. I know
- 7:04you're wondering what the paint color
- 7:06is, so I'll tell you. This is Tarragon
- 7:09by Sherwin-Williams, a deep blue-green
- 7:12with slate depth and muted teal
- 7:14undertones. The blue portion of the
- 7:16color becomes more noticeable when
- 7:18placed next to warm elements, like
- 7:21cognac leather, like brass, like warm
- 7:24woods. In this room, those elements push
- 7:27Tarragon toward the cooler side of its
- 7:30spectrum. It's a paint color very good
- 7:33at maintaining depth around the clock.
- 7:35During daylight, the room feels rich. In
- 7:38the evening, it becomes moody and
- 7:40atmospheric. This duality is extremely
- 7:43desirable for a study, library, office,
- 7:46or lounge. Plants and natural textures
- 7:49work well in rooms with this paint color
- 7:51because it's earthy undertone helps them
- 7:54feel authentic to the space. The
- 7:56decision to use Roman shades as the
- 7:59window treatments is subtle, but it's
- 8:01important. They helped soften the
- 8:03framing without introducing visual
- 8:05clutter. Curtains would have crowded the
- 8:08wall. Standard blinds would feel too
- 8:11casual. With these barley toned shades,
- 8:14we're able to maintain the clean
- 8:16structure of the window while forming a
- 8:18tailored look. Take a look at the rug's
- 8:21pattern. What do you notice? It's
- 8:23striped, and its stripes run
- 8:26horizontally. It balances the rhythm of
- 8:29the vertically oriented tongue and
- 8:30groove wall paneling, the tall
- 8:33bookcases, and long windows. Without the
- 8:35rug, the room might feel too vertically
- 8:38dominated. The rug returns stability and
- 8:42anchors the desk. Ultimately, we have to
- 8:45ask the question, is our room
- 8:47representing us well? Are we proud of
- 8:51having it as an extension of ourselves?
- 8:54A well-tailored space answers that
- 8:56without a doubt. If you like the video,
- 8:59hit the thumbs up. If you feel like
- 9:00sticking around a while, feel free to
