- 0:02If anyone were holding on to any last
- 0:05DELUSION THAT DONALD TRUMP'S BLUSTER
- 0:07AND WEIRD AND ERRATIC PUBLIC STATEMENTS AND
- 0:10BEHAVIOR WAS SOMEHOW HIS SECRET STRATEGY OR
- 0:14SAUCE ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE THOSE DELUSIONS
- 0:16SURELY DIED A QUIET AND
- 0:19MORTIFIED DEATH TODAY AS THE 60-DAY MEMORANDUM
- 0:22OF UNDERSTANDING WITH IRAN EXPIRES DONALD TRUMP
- 0:24PROVING ONCE AND FOR ALL THAT HIS EGO,
- 0:27HIS FRAGILITY, his apparent instability,
- 0:30might actually be America's greatest national
- 0:32security threat.
- 0:35As it becomes abundantly clear that he is way
- 0:37out of his depth in the war he began with
- 0:40IN THE SPAN OF JUST 20 HOURS DONALD
- 0:42TRUMP THREATENED TO BOTH DRAMATICALLY
- 0:45WIDEN THE WAR WITH IRAN AND TO ABANDON
- 0:47ONE OF OUR CLOSEST ALLIES IN FAVOR
- 0:49OF A DICTATOR WHO'S BEEN NICE TO TO HIM.
- 0:51EARLIER TODAY IN A PHONE INTERVIEW WITH FOX NEWS,
- 0:54DONALD TRUMP THREATENED TO BOMB THE
- 0:56COUNTRY OF OMAN OVER ITS DECISION TO NEGOTIATE
- 1:00WITH IRAN IN RESPONSE TO QUESTIONS FROM FOX
- 1:03ABOUT THE PARALLEL TALKS TAKING PLACE BETWEEN
- 1:05IRAN AND OMAN OF THE STRAIGHT OF HOMOUSE.
- 1:08ABOUT THAT, TRUMP SAID THIS,
- 1:10QUOTE, IF OMAN GETS IN THE WAY,
- 1:11WE'LL BOMB THE SHIT OUT OF THAT.
- 1:14TRUMP ALSO IMPLIED THAT THE U .S.
- 1:16WOULD BE ABANDONING ONE One of America's closest
- 1:18allies, South Korea,
- 1:20due to Trump's friendship with North Korean dictator
- 1:22Kim Jong-un.
- 1:24On that, Trump posted on True Social
- 1:27that we would be scaling down joint military
- 1:29exercises with South OF NORTH KOREA,
- 1:35I AM NOT HAPPY THAT THE UNITED STATES HAS LONG
- 1:41AGO AGREED TO PARTICIPATE IN JOINT MILITARY
- 1:44EXERCISES WITH SOUTH KOREA,
- 1:46THESE EXERCISES SEND A SIGNAL THAT IS TOTALLY
- 1:49INAPPROPRIATE AND HOSTILE TO A COUNTRY THAT AS
- 1:52LONG AS DONALD J. TRUMP HAS BEEN PRESIDENT,
- 1:55HAS BEEN UNTHREATENING AND RESPECTFUL.
- 1:58I RECENTLY ASKED THE PRESIDENT OF
- 2:00SOUTH KOREA IF THEY WOULD LIKE
- 2:02TO JOIN US IN THE DENUCLEARIZATION
- 2:04OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN
- 2:06AND THEY SAID QUOTE NO
- 2:27I'M MAKING IT MUCH SAFER.
- 2:29YOU SEE, I'M ACTUALLY MAKING IT MUCH SAFER.
- 2:33KIM Kim Jong-un has always treated me
- 2:35with great respect,
- 2:36and we met on numerous occasions actually,
- 2:39two primary occasions.
- 2:43Spoken and spent
- 2:59a lot of time, but we'd handle them very
- 3:01easily just
- 3:02like we do others.
- 3:05I feel it's important to stop regular
- 3:08programming and remind you of something
- 3:10that Trump's first secretary of state once
- 3:12said, REX TILLERSON,
- 3:13HE QUOTE REPORTEDLY CALLED TRUMP AN
- 3:16F-ING MORON FOLLOWING A NATIONAL SECURITY
- 3:19MEETING AT THE PENTAGON THAT WAS PER
- 3:20NBC NEWS REPORTING.
- 3:22CNN REPORTED AROUND THE SAME time
- 3:24that his first chief of staff
- 3:26or maybe was the second general john kelly
- 3:28said this about trump when it came to foreign
- 3:30policy quote the depths of his dishonesty is
- 3:33just astounding to me the dishonesty
- 3:36the transactional nature of every relationship
- 3:39though it's more pathetic than anything else
- 3:41he is the most flawed person I've ever met
- 3:45in my life back to today's news Donald Trump
- 3:48they're speaking like a president
- 3:50who has no idea that the ally
- 3:53in this equation is Oman which is
- 3:56America that relies on Oman's
- 3:58military facilities there
- 4:00while Donald Trump might be doing
- 4:02his best to play a character,
- 4:04the character of a strong man.
- 4:06The reality is spoken by Rex Tillerson
- 4:09and John Kelly and the reality of this moment
- 4:12of America's military posture around the world
- 4:15does tell a very different a very alarming story
- 4:18as Trump's war with Iran depletes our weapons
- 4:20stockpiles and exhausts our men and women
- 4:23in the military.
- 4:24Washington Post is reporting today that the U
- 4:25.S.
- 4:26supply of a drone,
- 4:28that it's key to monitoring and defending
- 4:30the Strait of Hormuz has dropped
- 4:31by 25 % because of Trump's war with Iran.
- 4:35Trump attempting to emulate his favorite
- 4:37strongman on the world stage as our military
- 4:39and national security and credibility pay
- 4:42the price is where we begin today
- 4:44with some of our favorite reporters and friends.
- 4:46Former Deputy National Security Advisor
- 4:48to President Obama,
- 4:50now the co-host of Pod Save the World.
- 4:52Contributor Ben Rhodes is back.
- 4:54Also joining us, staff writer at The Atlantic,
- 4:56Tom Nichols is back.
- 4:57He's a professor emeritus of national security
- 4:59affairs at the U .S.
- 5:01Naval War College and our senior national
- 5:03security reporter David Rhodes is with us.
- 5:05David, I start with you.
- 5:07And I went back and read the context
- 5:10of Tillerson's description of Donald Trump
- 5:13as an effing moron.
- 5:14I think it comes after this now infamous
- 5:16tank briefing where the generals are
- 5:18trying to tell Trump basically why we go
- 5:21to war WHAT WE ARE FOR AND WHY WE
- 5:23FIGHT AND WHO WE ARE ALLOWED WITH AND WHY.
- 5:26AND THE INNABILITY TO MAKE I THINK THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE
- 5:27HIM
- 5:28UNDERSTAND THE PURPOSE OF ALLIANCE AND THE THREAT
- 5:31POSED
- 5:33BY OUR ADVERSARIES IS, I THINK,
- 5:35WHAT CREATES TILLERSON TO
- 5:37TRUMP TO JUST BURST OUT WITH THAT TRUTH BOMB,
- 5:39DESCRIBING TRUMP AS AN F-ING MORON.
- 5:41I THINK ON KELLY'S PART, GENERAL JOHN KELLY HAD BEEN
- 5:43SORT
- 5:45AND I THINK IT'S A LITTLE WHEN TRUMP
- 5:48REPEATEDLY TWEETED ABOUT LITTLE ROCKETMAN,
- 5:51WHICH WAS HIS SORT OF THE ENEMY PART
- 5:54OF THE FRIENEMY RELATIONSHIP WITH KIM
- 5:57JONG-UN WHEN HE CONCLUDES THIS, THAT,
- 5:59QUOTE, THE TRANSACTIONAL NATURE
- 6:01OF EVERY RELATIONSHIP THAT TRUMP HAS IS,
- 6:03QUOTE, MORE PATHETIC THAN
- 6:05ANYTHING ELSE.
- 6:05SO THESE ARE TWO CREDIBLE MEN
- 6:10WHO WERE THERE FOR WE ARE NOT GETTING
- 6:14ANY WINDOW INTO THE HONEST PREDICAMENT
- 6:17THAT THE PRESIDENT HAS PLACED IN THE
- 6:19UNITED STATES.
- 6:20WE ARE RELY ON JOURNALISTS LIKE YOURSELF.
- 6:22TELL US, ARE THINGS AS BAD AS THEY SEEM?
- 6:26THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE, I WOULD SAY.
- 6:28THE STRANGE THING ABOUT I WANTED TO TALK
- 6:29ABOUT THIS WEEKEND AND, YOU KNOW,
- 6:30I HAD THE SAME FEELING YOU DID IS
- 6:32THAT THE ERRATIC BEHAVIOR
- 6:33OF THE PRESIDENT IT'S OBVIOUSLY
- 6:34LED TO ENORMOUS PROBLEMS AND FAILURES AND,
- 6:36YOU KNOW,
- 6:38TREMENDOUS RISKS FOR American
- 6:39servicemembers with Iran.
- 6:41But you now have that sort of spreading
- 6:43around the world.
- 6:46Previously, you could also could have
- 6:46said there was
- 6:47a problem in Ukraine.
- 6:48You talked about South Korea
- 6:51and it's extraordinary that the The president
- 6:53of the United States is sort
- 6:55of praising the dictator, Kim Jong-un,
- 6:58who is in his early 40s, you know,
- 7:00who inherited this hermit kingdom
- 7:02from his father, you know, that they should be treated
- 7:04well because,
- 7:10IT'S JUST ASTONISHING IN THAT
- 7:13IT HELPS CHINA SO MUCH.
- 7:15AND AT THE SAME TIME, YOU HAVE THE LAST U .S.
- 7:19aircraft carrier, the Japan-based carrier,
- 7:22leaving the region for the first time
- 7:26since the 1970s.
- 7:27And that this has been Republican
- 7:29and Democratic presidents,
- 7:30going back to and Nixon have had a carrier
- 7:33there to protect South Korea,
- 7:36to protect Taiwan, and to protect Japan.
- 7:39And it's the rate at which Donald Trump is sort
- 7:41of unraveling our alliances,
- 7:59completely boxed in.
- 8:00And I don't know what story his
- 8:03own advisers could be telling him that doesn't,
- 8:05you know, perhaps in softer terms
- 8:07articulate
- 8:08that when it comes to Iran.
- 8:10But what is your sense of what their,
- 8:13their own assessment is of what our options are?
- 8:17It's hard for me to say I don't know.
- 8:19I know at least in the first term, you know,
- 8:21Trump's aides feared him.
- 8:24He had a volcanic temper.
- 8:25I mean, the big difference was
- 8:27that there were people like Rex Tillerson,
- 8:29like Jim Mattis, who resigned.
- 8:31Gina Haspel threatened to resign
- 8:34because she would not allow Kash Patel
- 8:36to become the deputy director of the CIA.
- 8:38You don't see that in his closer circle.
- 8:41You do see some people leaving.
- 8:43One announcement over the weekend was Andy
- 8:44Baker.
- 8:45He's a respected aide of J .D.
- 8:47Vance's.
- 8:48He's now leaving the White House.
- 8:50Carolyn Leavitt, you know, said she was going to leave
- 8:51earlier.
- 8:52And so there's, it's not a large number of
- 8:54people leaving,
- 8:55but the different dynamic, the key here in this second
- 8:57term is just,
- 8:59it's just Trump doing what he wishes.
- 9:03Todd Blanche saying, I'm going to consult with
- 9:06the president
- 9:08when it comes to the Justice Department.
- 9:09It's a president getting more power
- 9:11than we've ever seen since
- 9:13the post-Watergate reforms and then a PRESIDENT,
- 9:15AT LEAST IN TERMS OF FOREIGN
- 9:18POLICY AND NATIONAL SECURITY,
- 9:19THE AREA I KNOW WELL,
- 9:20WHO JUST SEEMS TO BE MAKING THIS
- 9:23UP AS HE GOES ALONG.
- 9:26YEAH, I MEAN, BEN, AND THE UTTERANCES ABOUT
- 9:31CANCELING MILITARY EXERCISES
- 9:34AND ABANDONING SOUTH KOREA THE PEOPLE
- 9:36THAT HAVE IN SOME WAYS ALARMED A WIDER CIRCLE OF
- 9:40PEOPLE MORE PUBLICLY THAN THE
- 9:42VOLATILE AND CHAOTIC AND
- 9:46I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S JUST A NEW FRONT
- 9:48THAT HE'S NOW PUBLICLY DESTABILIZING.
- 9:51KIM JONG-UN IS AN OLD, I WANT TO CALL HIM PARAMOR,
- 9:56SORT OF HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE,
- 9:57HE'S SHARED HIS LOVE LETTERS BETWEEN
- 9:59HIMSELF AND KIM JUNG-UN ACROSS THE TWO TERMS.
- 10:02HE'S VERY PROUD OF THAT RELATIONSHIP BUT AGAIN
- 10:05AND IT FEELS ALMOST LIKE HE WAS
- 10:08STEERED TOWARD A FRIENDSHIP WITH
- 10:10KIM JONG-UN BECAUSE THE ADVISERS
- 10:12AT THE TIME FEARED THAT HE WOULD
- 10:13START A WAR WITH NORTH SOUTH KOREA,
- 10:15BUT JUST TALK ABOUT THE NATURAL EXTENSION OF THAT
- 10:19RELATIONSHIP LEADING TO THE ABANDONING OF
- 10:21ANOTHER KEY STRATEGIC U .S.
- 10:23ALLY IN KOREA, SOUTH KOREA.
- 10:26Well, I mean, first of all, it feels a bit like a bully
- 10:29on the schoolyard who is not
- 10:31getting his way to Iran.
- 10:32And so now he's just going to look
- 10:34for other people to beat up.
- 10:36Right. It's a classic bully
- 10:37behavior.
- 10:38And let's take a step back here because,
- 10:40first of all,
- 10:42it bears noting that to much fanfare,
- 10:44Donald Trump launched those talks
- 10:46with Kim Jong-un in his first
- 10:48term that achieved precisely nothing.
- 10:50Like the purpose of THE TALKS GOING INTO
- 10:52IT WAS TO ADDRESS NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR
- 10:54WEAPONS PROGRAM AND NOTHING WAS
- 10:56DONE TO CONSTRAIN NORTH I DON'T THINK
- 10:58MISSILLE PROGRAM. IT'S ADVANCED SINCE THEN.
- 11:00IT'S ADVANCED SINCE THEN. IT'S ADVANCED SINCE THEN.
- 11:01IT'S ADVANCED SINCE THEN. IT'S ADVANCED SINCE THEN.
- 11:02HE SAYS THEY'VE DONE NOTHING THREATENING.
- 11:04THAT'S NOT THE THEY HAVE SENT TENS OF
- 11:06THOUSANDS OF TROOPS TO FIGHT IN VLADIMIR PUTIN'S
- 11:09ARMY IN UKRAINE AND IN RETURN THEY'VE GOT ALL
- 11:10MANNER OF RUSSIAN MILITARY
- 11:12TECHNOLOGY THAT PUTS THE UNITED STATES AT GREATER
- 11:18HE'S ALREADY DIMINISHED OUR COMMITMENT TO SOUTH KOREA,
- 11:21THE THAAD MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM
- 11:23WHICH IS THE MOST ADVANCED
- 11:25MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM WE DEPLOY IN THAT PART OF THE
- 11:27WORLD.
- 11:28INVOLVED TO DEFEND THEM AGAINST THREATS.
- 11:29PART OF THAT WAS MOVED TO THE
- 11:31MIDDLE EAST BECAUSE OF HIS IRAN WAR.
- 11:33HE'S ALREADY KIND OF SIGNALLED HOW UNIMPORTANT
- 11:37THEY THEY ARE GOING TO BE AROUND
- 11:41AFTER TRUMP AND THEY HAVE OTHER OPTIONS.
- 11:43THERE IS NO REASON SOUTH
- 11:44KOREA HAS TO MAKE ITS ENTIRE
- 11:46SECURITY ARCHITECTURE PLUG IN
- 11:47THE UNITED STATES AS IT DOES.
- 11:49THEY COULD TURN TO CHINA.
