- 0:05movie I saw recently, a spider movie,
- 0:08and the first time I HAD SPICY HOT POT
- 0:12and I almost pooped my pants. [laughter]
- 0:16Stay tuned.
- 0:20Hello everybody and welcome to the John
- 0:23Pang Show. I am so happy to have you
- 0:27back. Welcome all my friends. If you are
- 0:30new, well, you are in for quite a ride.
- 0:33All right, so ladies and gentlemen, we
- 0:36are currently at I want to say nine or
- 0:4010 episodes. I am losing count. And like
- 0:44I told you before at the beginning of
- 0:45the year, my goal is I'm going to keep
- 0:48at this. We got to get to 100.
- 0:52We got to get to 500, 1,000. I am going
- 0:56to do this for the rest of my life. or
- 0:59until you don't like me anymore.
- 1:00[laughter]
- 1:01Okay, so
- 1:04I'm so happy to have all of you all
- 1:06here. Uh if you're new again, let me
- 1:08tell you how this podcast works. So
- 1:09first of all, yes, I am an English
- 1:12teacher. Yes, I do teach English, but
- 1:14this podcast is not necessarily an
- 1:16English teaching podcast, but it is an
- 1:19amazing English listening uh learning
- 1:23resource for you because I'll be talking
- 1:25to you in my naturally uh my natural
- 1:29charismatic uh native speaker English.
- 1:31All right? And I'll be talking to you
- 1:33about life stories, funny stuff and and
- 1:36and all types of funny things and and
- 1:39interesting things that I hope that you
- 1:40will enjoy. All righty. So, our format
- 1:44again is we kind of catch up on what's
- 1:46been going on recently and then we kind
- 1:49of talk about a main topic or sometimes
- 1:50we need to just talk about anything and
- 1:52everything. All right, my friends. So,
- 1:55with that said, let's begin our show.
- 1:58So, currently, uh again, I always got to
- 2:00talk about our progress because I feel
- 2:02like if you've been listening, uh with
- 2:04me right now, if you're a listener right
- 2:06now, I feel like you're you're part of
- 2:08this growth. Again, you probably know me
- 2:12from my English teaching account. And
- 2:14so, you know that this is kind of like
- 2:15my new project, my my new adventure in a
- 2:19sense. And honestly, it's been scary.
- 2:22It's been fun. It's been tough. It's
- 2:25it's been uh very gratifying. And
- 2:27there's been a lot of growth to it
- 2:28because I'm learning something every
- 2:30day. As an example, before I turned uh
- 2:34this this camera on, if you're watching
- 2:37right now, before I started recording, I
- 2:39spent literally the last two or three
- 2:41hours messing around with lights, with
- 2:44audio, with video. And again, I
- 2:47apologize if there are any issues with
- 2:49the the visual quality or the audio
- 2:52quality. Trust me when I say I'm still
- 2:55learning and I'm glad you're here with
- 2:57me. Please forgive me. But if you've
- 3:00been here since the beginning, uh we've
- 3:01made great improvements. We got a new
- 3:03camera, we got a new mic. There's still
- 3:05a few things I need to do auto uh with
- 3:07the audio, I definitely need to fix. Uh
- 3:10but we're slowly getting there. And uh I
- 3:13hope that you can let me know if you
- 3:14have any feedback. Uh for example, you
- 3:17think the background could be a bit
- 3:18better, a bit cooler, you think the
- 3:20audio could be more full, if it needs
- 3:22more work, if you hear some issues here
- 3:24and there, uh please let me know.
- 3:28Somebody was complaining that sometimes
- 3:30when I talk I have too many um a
- 3:34eh
- 3:36you know uh there's a few words I say
- 3:39too much uh for example I say for
- 3:42example too much I say okay too much I
- 3:46say you know a lot too much and I am
- 3:50actively trying to fix that but I am not
- 3:53a perfect human being so bear with me
- 3:56ladies and gentlemen all right I'm just
- 3:58I'm human just like you. [laughter]
- 4:01All right, so let me tell you uh what's
- 4:05been going on with me recently. So um
- 4:09lot of interesting family stuff
- 4:11recently. Um if you don't know, I'm
- 4:13based in China. Uh I'm Americanborn
- 4:16Chinese. I have Chinese family and I
- 4:18also have uh family in the USA as well.
- 4:20Uh most of my immediate family is in the
- 4:23USA and I've been living in China now
- 4:25for over 20 years. And you know, it's
- 4:30interesting
- 4:32a as you get older when you start to
- 4:34think about how you keep in touch with
- 4:36people and, you know, how important they
- 4:39are to you and and you kind of think
- 4:42about as people get older, as you know,
- 4:45people unfortunately maybe get sick or
- 4:47pass away that time just goes by, how
- 4:51important it is to to keep in touch with
- 4:53with people. And for me, honestly, I try
- 4:58to go back to visit my family twice a
- 5:00year. And I try to stay, you know, for
- 5:03at least uh, you know, a week and a half
- 5:05or two weeks. Honestly, as much as I
- 5:08love being with my family, when I go
- 5:10overseas, uh once I hit the two week
- 5:13mark, that's where I kind of get a
- 5:14little like I need to get back to my my
- 5:17my my my main habitat, my my home, you
- 5:21know, my home again is in China. But,
- 5:24you know, I I do it because it it makes
- 5:26my family happy. Um especially my
- 5:29mother. my I'm very very close to my
- 5:31mother and you know she always says like
- 5:35I I'm like her her her her her arm like
- 5:37a part of her body a part of her soul
- 5:39and and when I'm not with her she
- 5:41doesn't feel complete so honestly it
- 5:43it's it's a way for me and for her kind
- 5:46of like to to fill our hearts to fill
- 5:49our our spirits and I guess kind of just
- 5:52live our live our lives normally from
- 5:54there because I don't know it's it's
- 5:55hard to be away from them and so I I
- 5:58mean for you too. I I mean you can also
- 6:02tell me do you live away from your
- 6:05family? Uh did you ever for example
- 6:08immigrate overseas? Uh how often do you
- 6:12visit them? How often do you keep in
- 6:13touch? I I think about all these things
- 6:16a lot especially as I'm getting older
- 6:17because I feel like especially when you
- 6:20meet some older people like as an
- 6:21example I have a uh uh some uh I guess
- 6:25older aunts and uncles where they're a
- 6:29bit older you know in their 80s uh 70s
- 6:3280s and still doing very well but you
- 6:35know the the kids have moved overseas or
- 6:37they're not around they're not in their
- 6:39immediate location so it just becomes
- 6:42this this thing like What do you do when
- 6:45you get to that age? Um, you know, how
- 6:47do you spend your time? Do you think
- 6:49about your family? Does your family
- 6:51think about you? And and I feel like
- 6:53sometimes it's not necessarily that
- 6:57we
- 6:59don't care or don't love our family.
- 7:02It's just life gets in the way, right?
- 7:05You get so busy doing your thing. You
- 7:08get so busy with your routines, your
- 7:10work, the things you have to do, your
- 7:12your your life, school, your career, you
- 7:16know, maybe you fall in love with
- 7:17somebody, maybe your new uh boyfriend or
- 7:20girlfriend or husband or wife, this is
- 7:22like now your main thing. It's not that
- 7:25your family isn't important. It's just
- 7:28there's only so much time in the day.
- 7:30So, I've been thinking about that a lot,
- 7:33you know, just just life, work, and
- 7:36career balance. And I hope as time goes
- 7:39by I can get better at it. I hope I can
- 7:41talk to people more, call people more,
- 7:43uh keep in touch more. You know, you can
- 7:45also let me know some better ways that I
- 7:48can improve that for myself cuz I'm
- 7:50working on it, ladies and gentlemen.
- 7:53I mean, honestly,
- 7:55I feel like every single day I'm trying
- 7:57my best to be a better man, a better
- 8:00man, a better person, a better content
- 8:03creator, better at my career, a better
- 8:05friend.
- 8:06And
- 8:08sometimes it's just hard. You know,
- 8:10there there's only so much you can do in
- 8:13the day. But I will say that I try to
- 8:17control a few things. You know, one I
- 8:19always try to control the way I talk to
- 8:21myself. We call the selft talk. And
- 8:23selft talk basically is
- 8:26the way you talk to yourself is very
- 8:29important. The voice inside your head
- 8:33dictates who you will be, what you will
- 8:36do, and what you will think. So if you
- 8:39are constantly telling yourself in your
- 8:41mind, I suck, I'm a loser, I can't do
- 8:45this, I'm a failure, what generally
- 8:48tends to happen is that you start acting
- 8:52upon those thoughts and that voice in
- 8:56our head is very very very dangerous.
- 8:59It's dangerous because it is so
- 9:01impactful. It's dangerous because it's
- 9:03in our head 24/7. It's the closest thing
- 9:06we will hear. So I urge you your inner
- 9:11voice, your self-t talk. If you are
- 9:13constantly being hard on yourself,
- 9:15you're being negative with yourself, try
- 9:17to speak to yourself better. Try to talk
- 9:22to yourself better instead of telling
- 9:24yourself you're a loser. You suck.
- 9:26You're not worth anything. You're you're
- 9:28dumb. you're a failure. Tell yourself
- 9:30you're a winner. You work hard. You are
- 9:34disciplined. Tell yourself that even if
- 9:36you're not at the goal you want to be at
- 9:39right now, you are working towards it. I
- 9:42am working on my goals. I'm trying to be
- 9:45better. I'm going to be more confident.
- 9:47I am confident. These things are very
- 9:50very very important. Please please speak
- 9:53to yourself better and I will help you
- 9:55with that. I will also talk to you
- 9:56better as well because I tell me let me
- 9:58tell you something right now. If you're
- 9:59watching this podcast, if you're
- 10:00listening to this podcast, you are a
- 10:03winner. [laughter]
- 10:05Okay.
- 10:08Now,
- 10:10I apologize. Um I I know a lot of people
- 10:13sometimes they they watch this podcast
- 10:15and they're like, I I want to laugh. I
- 10:17want comedy. I I want things to be
- 10:21funnier. Why are you being so serious?
- 10:24Because man, because ladies and
- 10:28gentlemen, I'm I'm a complex guy. I've
- 10:31got a lot of stuff going on in this
- 10:33head. I can't always be one way. I'm a
- 10:35human being. And so I I hope that if
- 10:38anything that when you're watching this
- 10:39podcast, if you're listening to this
- 10:40podcast, what you can get from it is my
- 10:43most natural self. I want to feel like
- 10:46um how do I say this? I want my podcast
- 10:48to feel like
- 10:50it's just you and me. We're friends.
- 10:52We're talking. Uh, we are shooting the
- 10:54uh we're shooting the t I can't say
- 10:58it. Sorry, I can't curse on our podcast
- 11:00because uh this is a family-friendly
- 11:02podcast, not an explicit podcast, but
- 11:03you get what I'm saying. All right,
- 11:04that's a useful phrase for you. All
- 11:06right. Now, uh recently I also saw a
- 11:12movie. I saw the new Spider-Man. H I
- 11:15don't know how many of you are actually
- 11:16like superhero uh if you like superhero
- 11:20comics or movies or things like that. Uh
- 11:23I've always really really loved DC. DC
- 11:27if you don't know has the superheroes
- 11:29like Batman and Superman,
- 11:32uh Green Lantern, blah blah blah. And
- 11:35then you know the other one is Marvel
- 11:37which has like Spider-Man, Iron Man,
- 11:39Thor, etc., etc. And I got to say that I
- 11:44thought The Last Spider-Man, I'm not
- 11:45going to give away any spoilers,
- 11:47anybody. Um, you know, I I don't want to
- 11:49ruin it for you. I I hate when you watch
- 11:51a video or you listen to a podcast and
- 11:54they just like ruin everything. I always
- 11:55skip forward. I'm not going to do that
- 11:56for you. But I will say that I felt like
- 12:00this newest Spider-Man,
- 12:03I saw it in IMAX, first of all, which
- 12:05was amazing. Like a true IMAX, like a
- 12:07huge, huge, huge screen. I felt that
- 12:12there's a lot of weird plot holes. Not
- 12:15not plot holes, but like a lot of things
- 12:17like why did that happen? Huh? That was
- 12:20convenient. Um, all I'm going to say is
- 12:23that what happens to Spider-Man in the
- 12:26end of the movie? It made me say, well,
- 12:29if it was that
- 12:31[laughter]
- 12:33I got to stop myself. I said no
- 12:35spoilers, but I I said no spoilers. I I
- 12:37I almost gave away the spoiler. All I'm
- 12:39going to say is that if it was if it was
- 12:42that easy to
- 12:45uh to affect Spider-Man that way,
- 12:51why not just do that all the time, like
- 12:55247? That'd be the easiest way to get
- 12:57rid of him, right? Okay, that's all I'm
- 12:59going to say. I apologize if I if I gave
- 13:02any spoilers away. You can you can guess
- 13:04at at what it means. All right.
- 13:06[laughter]
- 13:09But, you know, it it is interesting
- 13:11because even if you don't really care
- 13:14about uh superhero movies or or
- 13:16superheroes in general, there's there's
- 13:18a there's an interesting phenomenon.
- 13:19It's called superhero fatigue.
- 13:23And what that means is that people are
- 13:25just kind of like sick of superhero
- 13:28movies, right? Since the first Iron Man
- 13:31movie and actually even before that, you
- 13:34know, that's the thing. People don't
- 13:35realize that Iron Man was not the first
- 13:37superhero movie. There was way more
- 13:39before that. There was uh uh Blade.
- 13:42Um there's obviously more. I'm I'm
- 13:46sorry. I There was the Hulk, the the old
- 13:49one there. There's more. I'm sorry. It's
- 13:51off the top of my head. I can't remember
- 13:52them. But anyways, since that was a long
- 13:55time ago, you know, so I think like the
- 13:57the first Avengers was like what over
- 13:59over 10 years ago more. Time flies,
- 14:04right? But since then, there's just been
- 14:07so many superhero movies, shows,
- 14:12cartoons, and this and that. And so what
- 14:15that means that people have superhero
- 14:17fatigue. And that means that when a new
- 14:19movie comes out, when a new show comes
- 14:21out, people are kind of just like,
- 14:26whatever. I'm not that excited anymore.
- 14:28But
- 14:31Spider-Man I think was like I believe is
- 14:34what like the one of the biggest
- 14:36openings of all time now like more than
- 14:39the Odyssey which is also a movie that
- 14:41just came out and coincidentally is also
- 14:44is has um Tom Holland is also starring
- 14:46not I don't know if he's a star but he's
- 14:47also in that movie as well. I think
- 14:49they're all both actors, all three
- 14:51actors are in the same movie. But
- 14:53anyways, so it does tell me that either,
- 14:58how do I say this? Either people are not
- 15:01sick of superhero movies or people just
- 15:03really really really
- 15:05love Spider-Man. I I I don't know what
- 15:08it is. People love Spider-Man. It's
- 15:10true. Every time there's a new
- 15:11Spider-Man movie, it's like it always
- 15:13does so well at at the movie theater,
- 15:17you know? Personally for me, I'm not the
- 15:19the biggest Spider-Man fan. Um I do
- 15:22prefer Batman. Batman and Superman,
- 15:24these are my guys. Uh in terms of
- 15:26superheroes, um I don't know what it is.
- 15:30I think that
- 15:33um how do I say this? Batman for me, you
- 15:37know, I think it's just it's just, you
- 15:38know, the common man. Something about um
- 15:43the way he presents himself. He's cool.
- 15:44I think there's a lot of people love
- 15:45Batman as well. I even love Superman as
- 15:48well. You know, it's funny because I
- 15:49think that for me I'm like, well,
- 15:51Superman is just doesn't have any
- 15:53weaknesses, you know, except for Krypton
- 15:54obviously, but um he's just the way he
- 15:58presents himself, what he stands for. Um
- 16:02I don't know. I I I think those are just
- 16:03things that that that really um that I
- 16:06really gravitate towards. Um you know,
- 16:08not only I think in terms of
- 16:11superheroes, but also in terms of people
- 16:13as well. And maybe that's why people
- 16:17like superheroes because for them, well,
- 16:21that's their Superman, right? Maybe for
- 16:23a lot of people in their daily lives,
- 16:25their personal lives, they don't have a
- 16:28a very strong figure in their lives.
- 16:31Maybe they don't have like someone that
- 16:32is their hero or a prominent person they
- 16:35look up to. So, we have our superheroes,
- 16:37we have our cartoons, we have our
- 16:38fictional characters. you know, it's not
- 16:40only just comics, but it's also anime,
- 16:43it's also TV shows, you know, cartoons,
- 16:46and, you know, I think it's great, you
- 16:48know, um I think I for me, I don't think
- 16:51I'll ever grow up in that sense at all.
- 16:53Always kind of like be into video games,
- 16:55be into comics and these things. But
- 16:58that's a topic for another day. Okay, I
- 17:00apologize. Many of you probably like,
- 17:02"Dude,
- 17:04I don't even care about superheroes,
- 17:06man." [laughter]
- 17:08I'm like, I'm a grown man. I'm a I'm a
- 17:11grown woman.
- 17:13I'm sorry. My bad. Okay. I'm a grown
- 17:15man, too, but I'm allowed to be a kid.
- 17:17All right. [laughter]
- 17:19All right. [gasps]
- 17:21So,
- 17:23what I wanted to talk about today, uh,
- 17:25after I've talked to you about so much
- 17:27already, uh, was actually some some more
- 17:30China stories. But I think in my in my
- 17:31last episode, um, a lot of people really
- 17:35got a kick out of, uh, me talking about
- 17:37scooters and how bad traffic can be in
- 17:39China in terms of like, uh, you know,
- 17:41especially for pedestrians, uh, walking
- 17:43on the sidewalk. If you haven't heard
- 17:44that episode, obviously, it's the last
- 17:46one. We're going to continue a little
- 17:48bit about that today. But, uh, actually,
- 17:50I want to talk about something more I
- 17:52think is interesting, and I want to
- 17:53share a story with you about the first
- 17:55time I had really spicy Chinese food. So
- 18:00this is a global podcast. We have uh
- 18:04people listening the USA, we have
- 18:07Americans, South Americans, Africans,
- 18:10Middle Eastern, Asians from all over the
- 18:13planet, everybody. So I want to say to
- 18:14everybody, I'm so happy to have you
- 18:15here. And I will say, okay, if I had to
- 18:20tell you the my
- 18:23my top three spiciest dishes I ever had.
- 18:29Okay,
- 18:31the spiciest food I ever had was uh this
- 18:36weird Thai curry. Okay, I got to put
- 18:39Thai as the spiciest food I've ever had.
- 18:43I remember I was with my friend and we
- 18:45were having some some u really good food
- 18:48and she was like try this. It was some
- 18:50like like a shrimp dish like I don't I I
- 18:53think it was like a raw shrimp dish or
- 18:55something like that. It had chilies uh
- 18:58you know like all these great seasonings
- 19:00and she's like it's hot be careful. I'm
- 19:03like h whatever I can handle some spicy
- 19:05dude this was the spiciest thing I ever
- 19:08had in my entire life. I put it in my
- 19:11mouth. Immediately my lips start
- 19:13burning. My nose starts running. I start
- 19:16sweating profusely. She's like, "Are you
- 19:19okay?" I'm like, [laughter]
- 19:20"It's all right. Not bad." I immediately
- 19:23just down to beer. And it it did not
- 19:25help at all. All right. So, Thai food
- 19:27for me definitely the spiciest. The
- 19:30second one for me has got to be some
- 19:33Chinese hot pot, which I will talk about
- 19:36more in a second. Chinese hot pot
- 19:38definitely is my number two. Uh there
- 19:40are many different types of hot pot in
- 19:43China. Uh but the one I'm talking about
- 19:46particularly is I think some hot pot I
- 19:48had in Chungdu once. Um
- 19:51how do I say this? It's it's very it's
- 19:54very oily and when it's it's in when you
- 19:58see it for the first time. So, so the
- 20:00one I had was called it's called like I
- 20:02think it's called like in Chinese we say
- 20:04neoyo and it's like um I don't know if
- 20:07this is the right I don't know if it
- 20:08really is called like cow oil [laughter]
- 20:11cow oil or beef oil. How do I explain
- 20:14this? So I don't know exactly what it is
- 20:16but basically [snorts] it's a spicy
- 20:19seasoning. So beside all the chili
- 20:21peppers and all that stuff it's like a
- 20:23spicy season. It's it's thick. It's like
- 20:25a block of spice and they put it in the
- 20:28hot pot. And this stuff this spice mix
- 20:31is is so thick that if it if it gets on
- 20:35the table, it'll it'll thicken and get
- 20:37hard. Um it's got to be I don't know if
- 20:42you're from this part of China from
- 20:44Sichuan uh or as the as people from
- 20:47around the world call it suan. Uh you
- 20:49can tell me what exactly it's made of.
- 20:51Again, this Sichuan hot pot is so thick,
- 20:55oily, and spicy. And the first time you
- 20:57have it, it is brutal. It is brutal.
- 21:00Especially if you're not used to like an
- 21:02oily kind of spicy. All right. Third
- 21:06spiciest thing I ever had before. Uh
- 21:08just like some I guess like some uh like
- 21:12some chili peppers or some jalapenos.
- 21:14Jalapeno is like a like a like a I think
- 21:17like a Mexican chili pepper. I don't
- 21:18know if it's Mexican, but I just for me,
- 21:20I've had it the most when I have like
- 21:21Mexican food and yeah, those will kick
- 21:24your butt. All right, but as I was
- 21:27saying, you you can tell me
- 21:29you can tell me what the spicy food you
- 21:31ever had was, let me tell you about my
- 21:33adventure having this spicy food for the
- 21:35first time. So, if you don't if you
- 21:38don't know anything about me, uh I'm I'm
- 21:40mixed, okay? I'm mixed Chinese. All
- 21:42right? Uh so my my my on on my father's
- 21:46side of the family I believe my my
- 21:49grandpa yes he is from Sichuan again
- 21:53Sushuan is a province in China and uh if
- 21:57you don't speak Chinese you probably
- 21:59pronounce it as Suan I think it's
- 22:01spelled like sce something like that
- 22:03right and so um I have like this this
- 22:07this such blood in me And
- 22:12Sichuan people in Sichuan, they they
- 22:14they generally eat spicy food. That's
- 22:16usually what they're known for. Sichuan
- 22:18is usually known for pandas, right?
- 22:19Pandas and spicy food. Actually,
- 22:22interesting enough, uh Sichuan is also
- 22:24known for hiphop as well. And correct me
- 22:26if I'm wrong, but yeah, there's a lot of
- 22:28uh a lot of uh rappers that live that
- 22:31are in Changdu, I believe. And yeah,
- 22:33they're very cool. Very awesome. I wish
- 22:35I could be a rapper. I'm just not cool.
- 22:36I'm just an old bald guy. [laughter]
- 22:39Okay. But it's okay. Some people some
- 22:41people like me. It's all right. So, um
- 22:44I have a friend that is from Chungdu,
- 22:49Chungdu province. And one day I said,
- 22:52"Hey, you know, I would love to go visit
- 22:54her." And I went to go visit her and and
- 22:56and just kind of see Chungdu, you know,
- 22:57I wanted to see the pandas. I wanted to
- 22:59see all the amazing things. It really is
- 23:02an amazing place to visit. Now again,
- 23:07they love their spicy food in Changdu.
- 23:11And honestly, every meal we had, I kind
- 23:16of feel like every meal, although not
- 23:18all of them were crazy spicy, all of
- 23:21them had like, for example, like maybe
- 23:23like a little bit of like chili pepper,
- 23:24maybe like at least a little bit of
- 23:25chili oil like in the noodles, like a
- 23:27little bit at least. like almost as if
- 23:29like I it's it's the we don't eat spicy
- 23:33all the time, but if I don't have a
- 23:35little bit, I just don't feel
- 23:36comfortable, you know? And so you can
- 23:39imagine me like not really being uh that
- 23:44into spicy food at the time. I love it
- 23:46now, but also like not being used to it.
- 23:49This was brutal. So the first meal I had
- 23:55in Chungdu was again I told you a big
- 23:59old Chungdu hot pot, a spicy hot pot.
- 24:03And so this big cauldron I remember like
- 24:08it's like it looked like lava. It looked
- 24:11like cuz it's in a pot. The fire is
- 24:13going again. Sorry, let me explain this.
- 24:16If you don't know what hot pot is, my
- 24:18friends, and again, it's a very
- 24:19international audience here. Hot pot is
- 24:22basically like uh is a Chinese dish
- 24:24where it's like you have a pot, a big
- 24:26pot, and you have like broth in there.
- 24:29You could have broth, you have tomato
- 24:30flavor, you could have like a spicy
- 24:32flavor, uh whatever. You could have
- 24:34mushroom flavor, whatever you want. And
- 24:36then you basically take like raw meats,
- 24:38raw vegetables, uh and you just put it
- 24:40in there, you cook it, and you dip it in
- 24:42a sauce, and you eat it. It's very good,
- 24:43very delicious. You should definitely
- 24:44try it sometime. All right. Um, and so
- 24:48I remember this big
- 24:50spicy
- 24:52lava
- 24:53volcano of a pot and I was like,
- 24:56"Whatever, dude. I can I can handle some
- 24:58spicy, man." I get my meat, I dip it in,
- 25:04I take a bite.
- 25:07Oh my
- 25:09dude,
- 25:11it's so spicy. and also
- 25:16numbing. Okay, this is a big one. So,
- 25:19uh, mala. All right. Uh, actually, if
- 25:23you're in if you're overseas, you
- 25:25probably heard the term mala as well.
- 25:27Mala, how mala is is this? There's um I
- 25:31forget the word. It's like a it's like a
- 25:32I think it's a a a Sichuan pepperc corn.
- 25:35I think it is. It's basically like a
- 25:37pepperc corn, I think. Correct me if I'm
- 25:40sorry if I'm getting this wrong. I'm
- 25:41sorry about that. All right. and you put
- 25:44it in the dish and it makes the whole
- 25:45dish like a peppery numbing feeling.
- 25:49Like your mouth will go numb, but not
- 25:50not like in a bad way. Not like in a oh
- 25:52MY GOD, I CAN'T FEEL MY MOUTH, but like
- 25:53a ooh, that's kind of that's kind of
- 25:56nice, right? And so this numbing feeling
- 26:01is usually accompanied with this spicy
- 26:03feeling as well. But if you're not used
- 26:05to it, you're just like, "Oh my, oh my
- 26:08god, my mouth is spicy. My mouth is on
- 26:13fire. My mouth is numb. I'm sweating.
- 26:16I'm sweating. I just begin sweating
- 26:18right away. I'm starting to sweat so
- 26:20bad. The sweat is going on my shirt.
- 26:23It's going in my soup. Dude, it was so
- 26:27so spicy. Now, [snorts] usually how you
- 26:30combat this this spice is well, you
- 26:33could you can drink something with it.
- 26:34So, you know, you could have a beer, you
- 26:36could have some water, whatever, right?
- 26:37You could have there's different sauces.
- 26:39So, uh, the sauce I like is like a a
- 26:42like a sesame oil sauce, a little oyster
- 26:44sauce, some garlic in there. Delicious.
- 26:47Right. Throw some cilantro in there,
- 26:49some parsley. Yummy. Right. You dip it
- 26:52in there. That kind of like gets rid of
- 26:54the spice a little bit, right? But I I
- 26:55was too far gone. And then, you know,
- 26:59you can have with some dessert, but the
- 27:01the problem is though, it's like once
- 27:03the spice is in your mouth, you just got
- 27:06to keep going, bro. You you you can't
- 27:07you can you can stop and pause and then
- 27:10then you're like oh man like I'm
- 27:12[snorts] hungry right but I'm hungry but
- 27:14this hot pot is spicy hot pot is brutal
- 27:18it's killing me right so I remember that
- 27:21first night just having this hot pot
- 27:24just eating it I'm just like dude I'm
- 27:26dying here right now I survived I
- 27:30survived the dinner yes I did right Now,
- 27:37remember when I told you about that
- 27:38neo-yo, right? So, this hot pot was that
- 27:42like that [laughter]
- 27:43I don't know if it's called cow oil or
- 27:45beef oil. I don't know what it's called,
- 27:47but it's it's it's a little oily. It
- 27:48gets thick, right? So, this hot pot was
- 27:51like that uh that that that beef oil
- 27:54style, right? And remember, I told you
- 27:56it gets really thick. You put it falls
- 27:58on the table, it thickens up, right? And
- 28:01I imagine that that night for dinner,
- 28:05that spice, that oil, well, it decided,
- 28:09hey, I'm going to thicken up right in
- 28:11your gut as well.
- 28:13Dude, that next morning, remember I
- 28:17talked to you about a volcano?
- 28:19That suchan spicy hot pot had my butt
- 28:25like a volcano as well. Dude,
- 28:33[screaming]
- 28:35dude, dude, dude. The pain,
- 28:39the suffering. I remember, dude. I was
- 28:43fighting for my [laughter]
- 28:47I was fighting for my life on the
- 28:49toilet, man. Like
- 28:52I had such bad di No, hold on. I had bad
- 28:57diarrhea, but not not like diarrhea
- 29:01because the food was bad. No, no, no.
- 29:03Don't hold on. Don't get me wrong. I was
- 29:05not having diarrhea because the food
- 29:06was, you know, rotten or bad or or I I
- 29:09was sick. No. I was having flaming hot
- 29:11poo because this this this this this hot
- 29:14pot was extremely spicy and all this
- 29:17spice in my belly. Well, remember
- 29:19everybody, what goes in must come out.
- 29:22[laughter]
- 29:26So, I remember that first day at that
- 29:30morning after I'd be like GRIPPING THE
- 29:33TOILET LIKE OH GOD
- 29:37MAKE IT STOP. [laughter]
- 29:41DUDE, it was like a flamethrower. Like
- 29:44fire shooting out my butt. [laughter]
- 29:49I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Everybody, listen.
- 29:52I listen. You could say right now, this
- 29:56is very inappropriate. This is so
- 29:58inappropriate. What? My kids are
- 30:00listening. Listen to me right now. Don't
- 30:02lie. Don't pretend like you have never
- 30:05had diarrhea before. Don't pretend to be
- 30:07like you never had something spicy
- 30:08before and you were suffering fighting
- 30:11for your life the next day. Okay, that
- 30:13was what happened to me. Okay, that
- 30:16spicy hot pot freaking whooped me so
- 30:21bad. All right, and I remember like I
- 30:23would go I'd come back. I'd be on the
- 30:26bed like [groaning] I could feel like
- 30:28the the the chilies just just just
- 30:31surging courarssing through my gut and I
- 30:33had to go back again. I went back like
- 30:35six different times, right? And the
- 30:38worst part, of course, right? Fire, what
- 30:42does fire do to you? Fire burns, right?
- 30:44Fire burns. And so that fire was burning
- 30:48my ring, if you know what I mean.
- 30:50[laughter]
- 30:54[laughter]
- 30:59My ring was on fire. All right. It was
- 31:02so it was so painful. It was so Oh, it
- 31:06was so sensitive. And it just kept
- 31:08happening and happening. I remember
- 31:10finally after round six,
- 31:14finally after I got everything out, the
- 31:17pain had subsided, but it was brutal.
- 31:22And I remember I remember after that
- 31:25like just like kind of like laying on
- 31:26the bed just like comeomaos after such a
- 31:29such a crazy incident. Like I called my
- 31:32friend. I'm like dude I I I feel so bad.
- 31:34I you know everything hurts. She's like,
- 31:35"Oh, I'm sorry. What happened?" Like,
- 31:37"Oh, that spicy food really kicked my
- 31:39butt." "Oh, okay. Don't worry about we
- 31:40we'll get some we'll get some uh like
- 31:42noodles like you know, just some regular
- 31:44noodles in." Okay. No, no crazy spicy
- 31:45stuff. We go to the restaurant and
- 31:48[snorts] like I told you, people in
- 31:51Chungdu love their spicy stuff, right?
- 31:54We go to this place like it's not spicy.
- 31:56Don't worry about it. I get a soup
- 31:58noodles and there's spicy chili oil in
- 32:01it. But, you know, granted, it's like a
- 32:03it's like a light. It's It's more like
- 32:05chili oil for like, you know, flavor,
- 32:07but it's still spicy. My poor stomach.
- 32:10My poor my poor r [laughter]
- 32:16my poor belly. I was like, "Oh my spicy
- 32:20stuff." I whatever. I just, you know, I
- 32:22power through and I figured I figured
- 32:24maybe I could build an immunity this
- 32:25way, right? So
- 32:29later that day, you know, I go back and
- 32:30rest. I think I had like some I I think
- 32:32I had to go to like a a a a a market to
- 32:35get some bread just to like coat my my
- 32:36my my insides. Again, I always tell
- 32:39everyone I'm not saying that, you know,
- 32:41Chungdu Citron food is is is bad. I'm
- 32:44just saying that if you can't do spicy,
- 32:47well, you better be prepared. It's it's
- 32:48a place of spice, right? Lots of spice
- 32:50over in that place, right? Lots of spicy
- 32:52cuisine. Now, the funniest thing I
- 32:55remember is that [laughter]
- 32:58excuse me. So, I remember uh we went to
- 33:03another restaurant and on this trip I
- 33:06actually uh went with my friend. I I
- 33:08brought my friend with me. He's a white
- 33:09guy, okay? And [laughter]
- 33:15he was with me, too. He was suffering
- 33:17that morning, too. He was definitely
- 33:20having some issues as well, right? And I
- 33:24remember that
- 33:26I was kind of okay like like my diarrhea
- 33:30had I'm not going to call it di I'm
- 33:31going to call it flaming poops. Okay.
- 33:33I'm going to call it uh flaming volcano
- 33:34butt. My volcano butt had already kind
- 33:37of like calmed down so I could like
- 33:39continue eating some more. Right. But he
- 33:41was like not doing good. Like he he was
- 33:44still getting it. Like he was still like
- 33:46I he had to go. He had to go. He had to
- 33:47go. Right. And so
- 33:50we were at this restaurant
- 33:53and
- 33:55I don't know why. Okay. So
- 33:59in China and I'm sure around the world
- 34:02as well, but you can tell me as well.
- 34:03Right. So actually in China, not every
- 34:08place has a a a regular toilet. And what
- 34:12I mean by that, I mean like a toilet you
- 34:13could sit down on, right? Actually,
- 34:16there's a lot of what we call like
- 34:17squatters. Uh, what does that mean? It's
- 34:19just a it's a toilet, but it's it's not
- 34:22it's not a hole. Well, it is a hole, but
- 34:24it's it's like it's in the ground,
- 34:25basically. If you need to use it, you
- 34:28squat down and you you use it that way.
- 34:30It's like it's like a regular toilet,
- 34:31but you squat down basically. Now,
- 34:33here's the thing. The funny thing is
- 34:36that
- 34:38that's good for you. actually squatting
- 34:41to use the bathroom, especially if it's
- 34:44number two, is normal and healthy.
- 34:47That's the way humans used to do it,
- 34:50right? Because it doesn't like, you
- 34:51know, bend everything, right? So,
- 34:53squatting is actually is very healthy.
- 34:56And, you know, they actually sell like
- 34:57little stools and chairs now for people
- 35:00that have issues using the bathroom,
- 35:02right? We're going number two. And so,
- 35:05you know, honestly, I don't mind them.
- 35:07I'm I'm I'm used to them, but you know,
- 35:10of course, preferably I would prefer a a
- 35:13a a regular I guess you could say like a
- 35:15western toilet for sitting down. Right
- 35:17now, here's the problem.
- 35:20[snorts]
- 35:21At that time,
- 35:23this was about like 15 years ago. At
- 35:26that time, the fashion was skinny jeans.
- 35:31Skinny jeans, right? Tight everything.
- 35:34Tight shirts, tight pants. The
- 35:37[clears throat] tighter, the skinnier,
- 35:38the better, right? And that's what I was
- 35:40rocking as well. The problem is if
- 35:42you're wearing skinny jeans, if you're
- 35:45wearing skinny jeans and you have to use
- 35:47a squatter toilet, [laughter]
- 35:51you're going to have some issues, right?
- 35:53So,
- 35:56my friend, we're at the restaurant and
- 35:59my friend, he's gets up. He's like, I
- 36:02got to use the bathroom right now. I'm
- 36:03like, okay, bro. Why are you just go?
- 36:06Oh, you don't you don't need to tell me,
- 36:07right? My friend again, he was still
- 36:10suffering from that that that that spicy
- 36:12hot pot we had the night before. So, he
- 36:15goes to the bathroom, you know, and we
- 36:19continue eating. I don't hear from him
- 36:21for an hour.
- 36:23[laughter] Okay. Just like an hour. So,
- 36:26I'm like, I call. [laughter] He doesn't
- 36:30answer the phone. I text. He doesn't He
- 36:32doesn't answer his text.
- 36:34Finally, I go to the men's bathroom.
- 36:36There's just there's like one bathroom
- 36:37there, one one stall basically. I knock
- 36:40at the door and he comes out and I'm
- 36:43like, "Dude, what's wrong? Are you
- 36:45okay?" He's like,
- 36:48[laughter]
- 36:49he's like, "That was one of the worst
- 36:52experiences of my whole life." I'm like,
- 36:54"What's wrong?" So, he had like again
- 36:59really bad diarrhea from eating that
- 37:02spicy hot pot. and he had the tightest
- 37:05skinny jeans on. So when he went to use
- 37:08the bathroom, he had [laughter]
- 37:11when he
- 37:13when he tried to squat down, he couldn't
- 37:16get his pants on
- 37:20[laughter and gasps] the pants were too
- 37:22tight. So when he tried, he couldn't get
- 37:25out.
- 37:28He couldn't get out of them. And so he's
- 37:31trying to take them off and they got
- 37:33stuck on his legs. And so he had to
- 37:35stand. And so he told me what he did is
- 37:38basically he told me what he had to did.
- 37:40He he [laughter] he
- 37:43had to [gasps] he had to take off his
- 37:45shoes, [laughter] take his pants off
- 37:48[gasps] because they're too tight.
- 37:51[laughter]
- 37:52And he hung the pants on the door. And
- 37:55then he used the squatter with no
- 37:57[laughter] pants on.
- 38:02>> [laughter]
- 38:09[laughter]
- 38:15[sighs and gasps]
- 38:16>> Oh my god. Oh my god. [snorts]
- 38:20Excuse me. Oh my god. [laughter]
- 38:24Excuse me.
- 38:27Excuse me, everybody.
- 38:28Oh. Oh my god.
- 38:32Oh, [sighs]
- 38:34[snorts] I told you this podcast would
- 38:36be just a conversation between you and
- 38:38me. [laughter]
- 38:41Okay. [gasps] So,
- 38:45I apologize [laughter]
- 38:47ladies and gentle if you could tell me
- 38:49right now. See, doing a solo p I'm sorry
- 38:53I'm so crying how hard I was laughing.
- 38:56doing a solo podcast. Again, like I just
- 38:58have to be me, right? I just have to
- 38:59tell like talk about things I think is
- 39:00funny or whatnot, but I know a lot of
- 39:02you too, right? All of you want
- 39:03something different from me, right?
- 39:04Again, the best thing I can give to all
- 39:06of you just be my natural fun stuff like
- 39:09like in my videos that I do for my my
- 39:12main account, you know, I do a lot of
- 39:14acting. I put, you know, outfits on.
- 39:16It's not my natural stuff, but I, you
- 39:17know, it's still kind of it's my humor,
- 39:18right? But this is the real me. like if
- 39:22we were sitting together at a table, if
- 39:23we were at a party, you know, if we if
- 39:25we met for the first time, I want to try
- 39:27to make you laugh. That that's that's
- 39:29the kind of person I am. I I I like I
- 39:32guess you could say I'm a people
- 39:34pleaser. People pleaser, not like like
- 39:36like a buttkisser, but like I get a
- 39:41tremendous
- 39:43uh sense of satisfaction. I feel happy
- 39:47when I can make people feel good. Wait,
- 39:50wait, [laughter]
- 39:52hold on a second.
- 39:54Let me rephrase that. I feel happy when
- 39:57I can make people feel good like like
- 40:00feel happy, not physically happy. Well,
- 40:02maybe if you need if YOU NEED A MASSAGE,
- 40:05your shoulder hurts, your neck hurts,
- 40:06maybe I'll help you. Anyways, when I can
- 40:09make people laugh, when I can make
- 40:11people feel comfortable, when I can make
- 40:13people feel happy, proud of themselves,
- 40:16like feel more confident, to me, that is
- 40:19the the the greatest satisfaction I can
- 40:22get in my life. And that applies to my
- 40:23family, my friends, for everybody,
- 40:24strangers as well, all of you as well,
- 40:26right? So, the story I just told, it is
- 40:29100% real. If my friend ever listens to
- 40:32this, I'm sure he'll have something to
- 40:33say. Maybe I'll get him on the podcast
- 40:34at later time in life. But um if you
- 40:38thought it was gross, I apologize about
- 40:40that. But if you thought it was funny,
- 40:41if you enjoyed it, hey, let me know in
- 40:44the comments. Okay, I that will be
- 40:46really important for me. Again, I can
- 40:48just be my natural self. Uh I just want
- 40:51to give you the best entertainment
- 40:53possible. I know people they told me
- 40:54they're like, "Oh, I love listening to
- 40:56your podcast when I'm walking on the
- 40:57street, on the subway, when I'm cleaning
- 40:59my house." I just hope that you don't
- 41:02have my podcast on TV and you're all
- 41:04eating dinner. I just told the story
- 41:06about how my friend almost pooped his
- 41:08pants. [laughter]
- 41:11[gasps] I hope you're not having dinner.
- 41:13And the story about me having volcano
- 41:16butt and hurting my ring [laughter]
- 41:19from a spicy hot pot just ruined
- 41:21everything. Okay. Your your your mom and
- 41:24dad will be like, "What is this crab?"
- 41:28[laughter]
- 41:29Literally. All right.
- 41:33Okay.
- 41:36Oh man, excuse me. Excuse everybody.
- 41:38Okay. So, anyways everybody, um I want
