I Tried Switching Back to the Apple Watch (After Garmin) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01I'm about to turn off my [music] Garmin
- 0:03for the first time in years. See, 3
- 0:05years ago, I left the [music] Apple
- 0:07Watch after too many frustrations.
- 0:12But while I was gone,
- 0:13>> but we're not stopping there.
- 0:14>> Apple kept updating everything.
- 0:16>> We do have
- 0:19one more thing.
- 0:21>> So, the real question is, what happens
- 0:23if I switch back now?
- 0:28And to make this fair, I have to go in
- 0:30and get Apple's newest Apple Watch.
- 0:33Let's do the Apple Watch [music] Ultra
- 0:36Series 3 with this loop.
- 0:38>> Okay,
- 0:40black watch. Cool.
- 0:44That one isn't.
- 0:47[music]
- 0:49Now, I want to be clear that I'm going
- 0:51into this experience very optimistic,
- 0:54not as a Garmin fanboy. I'm literally
- 0:57giving Apple every chance to win me
- 1:00over.
- 1:04I forgot how easy Apple makes
- 1:07everything. And it's not that Garmin is
- 1:10difficult, it's just that Apple is
- 1:12literally effortless. You simply turn it
- 1:15on and it connects [music] instantly.
- 1:17You get this futuristic QR code that you
- 1:19scan and Apple does the rest. You just
- 1:22keep tapping next, agreeing to terms you
- 1:25know you didn't read.
- 1:27Where Garmin users, we depend on the
- 1:30Garmin Connect app. Now, the nice part
- 1:32about that is that we're not really
- 1:34locked into an ecosystem. Works on
- 1:36iPhone or Android.
- 1:38Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel
- 1:41like Garmin users don't use some of the
- 1:43most basic features on their watch.
- 1:46First, they don't set up their Garmin
- 1:48Pay. And second, they don't set up their
- 1:50music.
- 1:51>> Currently, what watch do you use?
- 1:53>> 4Runner 965.
- 1:54>> Garmin Pay.
- 1:56>> I have it set up, but I've never used
- 1:58it.
- 1:59>> Do you use the music on your Garmin?
- 2:01>> I do not.
- 2:07Now, since I mainly lift and run, two
- 2:10things that I care about are
- 2:12accuracy and battery life. Now, there
- 2:16are two ways that I thought I could test
- 2:17this. The first one, long-term use,
- 2:20which we're going to get to later, but
- 2:22another way is just putting it through
- 2:24an actual race.
- 2:30And that's why we're in Miami. And
- 2:33tomorrow I'm gonna break my one rule.
- 2:35I'm gonna have my Garmin watch on my
- 2:37left and my Apple Watch on my right
- 2:39throughout the Miami Half Marathon
- 2:41course to see how these compare.
- 2:56>> [music]
- 3:02>> Mile one always feels the easiest.
- 3:07Mile two marker right there.
- 3:11Mile three right there.
- 3:16[music]
- 3:18We're coming up close to the 10k marker.
- 3:20But we know as soon as that sun rises,
- 3:23we're all cooked. [music]
- 3:30>> Mile nine. [music]
- 3:34Mile 10.
- 3:36[music]
- 3:41[music]
- 3:45>> [music]
- 3:47>> What is it?
- 3:50[music]
- 4:01Now, this is my official race time.
- 4:06This is what Garmin recorded, and this
- 4:08is what Apple recorded. And by the end
- 4:10of the race, my Garmin was at 91%. My
- 4:13Apple Watch Ultra was at 79. And one
- 4:16important thing that I need to call out
- 4:18is you might have seen that I was
- 4:19wearing AirPods,
- 4:22but they were paired directly to my
- 4:24phone. And speaking of AirPods, this
- 4:27video is sponsored by ESR, and they just
- 4:30dropped a bunch of new cases. And this
- 4:32one's my favorite for four reasons.
- 4:34First, it has a super tough [music]
- 4:36hook. I clip it to my everyday sling or
- 4:40my camera bag.
- 4:43Second, it has an internal latch, so the
- 4:46[music] case stays locked, but it still
- 4:48opens with one hand.
- 4:51And third, if you do happen to drop it,
- 4:53[music] the AirPods, they're not going
- 4:54anywhere. And last, it supports Mag
- 4:57Safe, and the magnets are actually even
- 4:59stronger. I'll have a link in the
- 5:01description below. Now using this
- 5:03diagram there are three categories but
- 5:06based on this race and also a few other
- 5:08runs this is where I would place them
- 5:10accordingly. First up controls and on
- 5:13race day under pressure physical buttons
- 5:16is going to win every time on my Garmin.
- 5:18I purposely turn off the touch controls
- 5:21especially on a race day. It just kind
- 5:22of gives me that like ease of mind that
- 5:25I'm not going to do any accidental
- 5:27presses. Now, with data screens, I have
- 5:29to give it to the one that's more
- 5:30customizable [music] and that has more
- 5:32data fields per screen. While Apple's
- 5:35native workout app, yes, it looks
- 5:37beautiful. The fonts, the colors, the
- 5:40animations,
- 5:41but the functionality, it really feels
- 5:44kind of limited,
- 5:46but this is where Apple turns everything
- 5:48around. The App Store basically fixes
- 5:51most of the Apple Watch issues. For
- 5:54example, the native workout app. just
- 5:56don't use it. [music] And you have this
- 5:57app. It gives you more customizable data
- 6:00screens.
- 6:02This one handles readiness and recovery
- 6:04better. And there's honestly so many.
- 6:06But most of these apps either require a
- 6:08one-time purchase or a subscription. And
- 6:12honestly, at this point, my entire life
- 6:15feels like it's one big subscription.
- 6:17So, if you take though the health and
- 6:20fitness aspect out of the equation and
- 6:22if I just live a regular life, I
- 6:26honestly forgot how good the Apple Watch
- 6:28is.
- 6:30When you own an Apple Watch, the
- 6:32accessory options that you [music] have
- 6:34are wild.
- 6:35Watch bands are everywhere. Chargers
- 6:38[music] are everywhere.
- 6:41They sell garments here, but I have
- 6:43never seen this store or any other store
- 6:46sell a Garmin charger or a Garmin watch
- 6:50band. [music] And I know this because
- 6:52I've bought plenty of Garmin watch bands
- 6:54online, and they work fine, but I wanted
- 6:57something different. [music] So, I
- 6:59designed my own. And this is the first
- 7:01and only glow-in-the-dark watch bands
- 7:05for [music] Garmin. Now, notifications
- 7:08on a Garmin, we receive them, but on an
- 7:11Apple Watch, you literally experience
- 7:13them.
- 7:15That convenience does come at a cost,
- 7:18and that's battery life. So, on this
- 7:21Apple Watch Ultra Series 3, I'm getting
- 7:24roughly like 2 days of battery life, and
- 7:26that's partially because of my running.
- 7:28I'm on a marathon prep. So, my fix to
- 7:32this battery life is simply just get
- 7:34more chargers.
- 7:44What's surprising me the most is that I
- 7:47haven't worn an Apple Watch in over 3
- 7:49years. And now that I have the newest
- 7:51one, it seems very, very familiar. But I
- 7:56don't mean that in a positive way. I had
- 8:00to double check exactly what was new.
- 8:03and classic Apple crushing the
- 8:05presentation, but a lot of the main
- 8:07features, not really much improvements.
- 8:10Still, there are a couple upgrades I can
- 8:12really appreciate. I will definitely
- 8:14give Apple credit for the satellite
- 8:16connectivity for emergency messaging
- 8:18when cellular fails. That is generally a
- 8:21great feature. Also, offline maps, we
- 8:24needed that. So, let me show you. This
- 8:27is how I actually see it.
- 8:32On one end you have the sports watch and
- 8:34on the other the smartwatch and in the
- 8:37middle this gap. This is where you get
- 8:39the best of both worlds. Now Garmin and
- 8:41Apple they started on opposite ends but
- 8:44over time Garmin added some smart
- 8:46features and Apple added fitness
- 8:48features but in these last few years I
- 8:50feel like Apple has pushed more to
- 8:52bridge that gap.
- 8:54And that's okay because in my opinion, I
- 8:58don't really feel like Garmin users
- 9:00expect their watch to become their
- 9:03phone. But I do feel like Apple Watch
- 9:06users, especially fitness ones, do
- 9:09expect their Apple Watch to get more
- 9:12Garmin-L like and Whoop features.
- 9:16I get why someone would want that
- 9:18constant connection. A watch that feels
- 9:21like a phone on your wrist, that extra
- 9:24peace of mind when you're running alone.
- 9:26Hey Siri, text my girlfriend. Let her
- 9:30know I'll be home in 2 hours. But
- 9:33there's just something about waking up
- 9:35to your garment and seeing that morning
- 9:37report.
- 9:39Running a whole marathon and the watch
- 9:42keeping you humble.
- 9:43>> Okay, man. Do you want to be a
- 9:45today? Do you want to feel like a little
- 9:46Do you want to walk around all
- 9:48day knowing that you could, but you
- 9:49didn't?
- 9:50>> Next month, I'll be running my second
- 9:52World Marathon major, and I'll take that
- 9:55tough love that Garmin gives.
