I Tried 100 Levels of Pull-Ups (Easy to Impossible) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00These are 100 levels of pull-ups.
- 0:01Starting from a level that almost anyone
- 0:03can perform, working yourself up to
- 0:05level 100, which is almost impossible
- 0:07even for me as a calisthenics world
- 0:09champion. I trained pull-ups for over 9
- 0:11years and some of these exercises I've
- 0:13actually never even tried and some I
- 0:15have tried but failed. Let's start with
- 0:17the easiest one though that I know that
- 0:18I can perform and most likely you as
- 0:20well. This would be level five and that
- 0:22is the Australian pull-ups, both feet in
- 0:25the ground, pull yourself up and back
- 0:27down. If you want to make it harder, we
- 0:28can do here. Still a slightly easier
- 0:30variation that sets the foundation for
- 0:32all other pulling exercises. Let's move
- 0:34on to level 10. This one is banded
- 0:36pull-ups. This sets the foundation for
- 0:39normal pull-ups and also great way to
- 0:41progressively increase the tension by
- 0:43getting a lighter and lighter resistance
- 0:45band. So, of course depending on how
- 0:46thick the band is, the easier it's going
- 0:47to be.
- 0:49This one we also got. Level 10, check.
- 0:52For level 15, we're taking away the
- 0:54resistance band. It's time to work with
- 0:55only body weight. This is the negative
- 0:57pull-ups. We start as high as possible
- 0:59and then we try to sink down with
- 1:01control. This one I've also got in the
- 1:03bag and maybe you as well. Let's move on
- 1:05to level 20. For level 20, we have the
- 1:08actual strict pull-up and according to
- 1:10street lifting rules, the chin need to
- 1:12be higher than the bar height. So, we'll
- 1:14pull yourself up, chin over and then
- 1:17come back down. It doesn't need to be in
- 1:18front of the bar but the height is the
- 1:20most important part. This one we also
- 1:22got. Maybe you're still with me. Let's
- 1:23go to level 25. As you can see, the
- 1:25difficulty is stepping up pretty fast
- 1:27and now we're moving on to chest to bar
- 1:29pull-ups. Basically the normal pull-up
- 1:31but with a lot more height so that we
- 1:34touch the chest.
- 1:36More difficult, more range of motion but
- 1:39I got it. Maybe you too. Let's go to
- 1:41level 30. Let's step it up even further.
- 1:44I know some people have very strong arms
- 1:46making pull-up grip a bit easier and we
- 1:48don't use the back as much but now we're
- 1:50going to do the wide pull-up. This would
- 1:52be level 30. This one definitely more
- 1:54back and we can't really utilize as much
- 1:56arms as before. This one we still got.
- 1:59Let's move on to level 35. Level 35
- 2:02we're incorporating some core
- 2:03compression as well. We're doing the
- 2:05L-sit pull-up. You can choose the grip
- 2:07if you want chin-up or pull-up grip, but
- 2:09then we have the L-sit and then keep
- 2:11that L-sit as we're getting the pull-up
- 2:14height. Slightly harder, but still
- 2:16manageable. Let's move on to level 40.
- 2:18If you thought the previous one was too
- 2:19easy, well, this one is going to be
- 2:21harder. We have archer pull-up. This
- 2:23puts way more pressure on one arm making
- 2:26it significantly harder. So, we'll grab
- 2:28a slightly wider grip and then we're now
- 2:30pulling to one side
- 2:33coming back down. And then I'm pushing
- 2:35with that other arm. Still got it. Let's
- 2:37move on to level 45. Level 45 we have
- 2:40explosive pull-ups. For this you
- 2:42preferably want a bit higher distance to
- 2:44the ceiling. I'm slightly limited there,
- 2:46but we're still going to get it
- 2:47explosive. I might hit the roof, but who
- 2:49cares? So, we go down and then we pull
- 2:52up.
- 2:55We're good. Let's move on. 45-50.
- 2:58>> [snorts]
- 2:58>> Level 50, we're pulling up this bad boy.
- 3:01Maybe you know what it is, maybe not.
- 3:02This is the belt where we can add
- 3:04external weight to our pulling. And for
- 3:06level 50 we're adding 40 kg. Weighted
- 3:08calisthenics is for sure a banger
- 3:10whenever you want to progress in
- 3:12strength cuz it's so freaking easy to
- 3:15incorporate progressive overload. As you
- 3:16get stronger, you just increase the
- 3:18weight and you have a clear tracking of
- 3:20are you getting stronger or not. Very
- 3:22good. So, as soon as you can do more
- 3:24than 10 bodyweight reps, I strongly
- 3:25recommend adding some light weight so
- 3:27that you keep pushing yourself and not
- 3:29only working on increasing the amount of
- 3:31reps, but also increasing the the weight
- 3:33underneath. Now, let's do the actual
- 3:34challenge. One pull-up with 40 kg. Dead
- 3:37hang.
- 3:39Cool. Manageable. But trust me, it's
- 3:41going to get much, much heavier as we
- 3:43increase in levels. We're just halfway.
- 3:45Let's move on to level 55. If you
- 3:47thought the archer pull-up was a bit too
- 3:49easy, let me give you a challenge that
- 3:51is a bit similar to it. It's called a
- 3:53typewriter pull-ups. This is the level
- 3:5655. We basically do the archer pull-up,
- 3:59but then we need to keep that height as
- 4:01we move on to the other side. Check from
- 4:04my side, but let me know if this is
- 4:05something you also can do. You might see
- 4:07the band and think, "Should we do banded
- 4:08pull-ups again?" And yes, we are. But
- 4:10this time we're eliminating an entire
- 4:12arm. We're doing it one-arm banded
- 4:14pull-up. A great setup for this is to
- 4:16fasten a resistance band in front of
- 4:18you. But instead of fastening the band
- 4:20in the foot, we actually put it on the
- 4:22side of the thigh. It actually looks
- 4:24more comfortable than it is. It's not in
- 4:26the center, it's on the side. Trust me.
- 4:27And then if we have it on the right
- 4:29side, we want to take the left arm then,
- 4:31so that we pull diagonally. And this
- 4:33will mimic the trajectory of the one-arm
- 4:35pull-up much better. So, we grab the
- 4:37band here or the bar, and then
- 4:40we pull up. And then if you want to
- 4:41change to the other arm, we can do it
- 4:44like this.
- 4:47Let's go. Time to move on to level 65.
- 4:49Honestly, a personal favorite of mine.
- 4:52We have front lever pull-ups. This for
- 4:54sure is a progression that you won't
- 4:56necessarily just get because you can do
- 4:59the previous exercises. But if you can
- 5:01do the previous exercises, you will have
- 5:02a pretty good pulling strength. And then
- 5:04if you can combine that with more
- 5:05positioning, training different
- 5:07progressions for the front lever, you
- 5:08can definitely accumulate this with some
- 5:10time. So, let's see if I still got it.
- 5:11One front lever pull-up. Go underneath,
- 5:14get the false grip.
- 5:16Pow.
- 5:17Touch the bar, full lock out. We got it.
- 5:20Let's move on to level 70. You could
- 5:21probably see on my assisted one-arm
- 5:24pull-up that I was actually struggling a
- 5:25bit. I tried to keep the poker face, but
- 5:27wasn't the best of doing so. But the
- 5:29truth is also that one-arm pull-up isn't
- 5:31my absolute strength. I might be strong
- 5:33in pulling in general, strong in
- 5:34weighted, but one-arm pull-up, pretty
- 5:36tough. I'm also 92 kg. May- maybe that's
- 5:38why. But don't want to say any excuses.
- 5:39But next up, we have one-arm pull-up.
- 5:42Let's see if I can do it.
- 5:44Think right arm is strongest. Let's go.
- 5:49The thing that's full range. I know that
- 5:51there's another variation of this coming
- 5:53up. So, I'm not going to do it on the
- 5:54left arm. I want to save it, but let's
- 5:56check that one. We have even heavier
- 5:57things to come, so let's move on. Level
- 5:59eight. It is time for another weighted
- 6:01one. Probably guessed it by the weight
- 6:03I'm holding. It's 60 kg pull-ups. Let's
- 6:06go. And if you're planning on getting
- 6:08any weights for your home gym, I can
- 6:09strongly recommend these ones actually
- 6:10from Grunnation. They are fully metal,
- 6:12though they are thin, perfect for
- 6:14weighted stuff without being, you know,
- 6:15like bumper plates super thick. The only
- 6:17thing is that they are of course metal,
- 6:18so preferably want a mat or something
- 6:20underneath unless you don't care about
- 6:22your floor. But, I like them so far. And
- 6:25if you want to get some yourself, then
- 6:26definitely check out the link above. And
- 6:28with code Simon, you'll get 10% off.
- 6:30Now, time for 60 kg rep. Dead hang.
- 6:37We got it. Definitely heavy, but doable.
- 6:39Let's move on to the next one. This one
- 6:40I know is going to be even tougher,
- 6:42unfortunately. We have another one, the
- 6:44final one-arm pull-up variation, which
- 6:47I'm thankful for. But, I'm not sure I'll
- 6:48be able to make this one. It is pretty
- 6:50damn insane. It is one-arm L-sit
- 6:53chin-up. This grip
- 6:55pull-up here, hold the L-sit. It's
- 6:57tough. The reason we do chin-up is
- 6:58because of the rotation. It's going to
- 7:00be pretty hard to do a one-arm pull-up
- 7:02here. So, if you want to do the L-sit,
- 7:04get up here, much easier with a chin-up
- 7:06grip physic-wise. Let's give it a go.
- 7:08Start in a dead hang.
- 7:17Not fully.
- 7:18I don't know why, but I feel like a
- 7:20climber. I feel like all climbers do the
- 7:22L-sit. It's tough. It's insanely tough.
- 7:24Let's give it a go on the the arm that
- 7:26I've rested.
- 7:31>> [snorts]
- 7:31>> Not even close on that one. Insane. Damn
- 7:34it. So, I failed on this one. But, like
- 7:36I said, I never train one-arm pull-up. I
- 7:38don't like it, or I'm just bad at it,
- 7:40honestly. That's the truth. So, let's
- 7:41move on to the other things. I might
- 7:43still be able to do more levels, just
- 7:45not this one. Comment down below if you
- 7:46got this one because that's pretty
- 7:48insane. You have my respect. We're back
- 7:50with some weights. But, now you probably
- 7:52look at the belt and see it's only two
- 7:53plates. That's 40 kg. It's less than we
- 7:55did before. That's true because we're
- 7:57doing a twist to it. Level 85 is
- 7:59weighted archer pull-ups. Insanely
- 8:01heavy, but it's also one hell of a good
- 8:03skill to progress towards the one-arm
- 8:06pull-up as well. You get more load on
- 8:07one arm, and then you progressively
- 8:09increase that. And once again, easy to
- 8:11incorporate for your overall load. But,
- 8:12let's see if we can have this one. 40 kg
- 8:15heavy.
- 8:20Maybe. Almost. I am not the one behind
- 8:23the camera that can see the angles and
- 8:24stuff, but maybe. Please.
- 8:27Valid? Yes.
- 8:29Yes. Yes.
- 8:30We got it. Let's move on to the next
- 8:32one. This is one hell of a tough one,
- 8:34but then again, the rules are to get the
- 8:35height and not necessarily in front of
- 8:37the bar. So, I'll take it. I'll take it.
- 8:39Time for level 90. We have the dip bar
- 8:42once again. We're going to do wide front
- 8:44lever pull-up. I'm going to go as wide
- 8:46as I can on a dip bar. Preferably, you
- 8:48want to have a slightly wider bar just
- 8:50for this specific thing, but the dip bar
- 8:52is convenient for my home gym, so that's
- 8:53why I have it. So, I'll go as wide as
- 8:55possible. Definitely much wider than I
- 8:56usually do. I'll see if I still can get
- 8:58a full range of motion pull-up.
- 9:01>> [sighs]
- 9:01>> False grip.
- 9:05Pretty much. Definitely touch, but then
- 9:07again, on paper, I think we should be a
- 9:09little bit wider, and I would be
- 9:11struggling at that point. But, I'll
- 9:12check this one off and move on to level
- 9:1495. The last two are insane. Like,
- 9:17absolutely nuts. Level 95. This is
- 9:20insane. We're up at 90 kg in pull-up.
- 9:24And I have actually done 100 kg in the
- 9:27past, but that's for the chin-up grip.
- 9:28Chin-up is actually the one I train, and
- 9:30in competition, you are allowed to do
- 9:32both. I've always been the strongest in
- 9:34the actual chin-up grip, so So, why I've
- 9:36trained it mostly. So, we're going to
- 9:37see the pull up. This one is slightly
- 9:39more prestige, I would say, if you're
- 9:40strong in this grip. Let's go. This is a
- 9:42PR for me in the the pull up grip after
- 9:45doing all the other ones as well. This
- 9:46is no Photoshop or something. I've
- 9:48actually done everything now in a pretty
- 9:50short amount of time. Let's go. Not an
- 9:51excuse, but it's going to be even more
- 9:53epic when I actually succeed now.
- 10:02It is heavy. It It is really heavy and
- 10:05uh
- 10:06it would benefit me to to practice the
- 10:08pull up grip a bit more. I'm not sure
- 10:10that's a valid one, honestly, and uh I
- 10:12didn't know if I was going to be able to
- 10:14do it, either, cuz I so rarely train
- 10:16weighted pull ups now with this grip and
- 10:18you really want to get to use to
- 10:19accumulating that height as well. So,
- 10:21yeah, I will take it. Even if I even if
- 10:23I don't succeed, I'm very happy with the
- 10:24attempt and I roughly know my level. I
- 10:27will still have one more, level 100.
- 10:29You're not ready for this one. Let's
- 10:30jump straight to it. Level 100. What the
- 10:33freak is that? Well, let me tell you,
- 10:35one arm front lever pull up. Insane.
- 10:38Actually, a few people in the world that
- 10:40can do it. I I'm not one of them until
- 10:43like right now, because I've never tried
- 10:45it. And I've never tried it because it
- 10:46looks so freaking hard. But, uh that's
- 10:48also why it's ranked the 100 level. So,
- 10:50let's give it a go. We have nothing to
- 10:52lose. I do have a one arm front lever
- 10:54when I'm fresh, maybe not after 99 other
- 10:57levels, but uh let's give it a go.
- 10:58Interesting to see.
- 11:05>> [gasps]
- 11:06>> No. You know how I told you one one arm
- 11:08pull up isn't my thing? How would it be
- 11:10possible to do it in this direction?
- 11:12I'll just stick to the the static one
- 11:14arm front lever hold and then the pull
- 11:16up will uh remain as a long-term goal.
- 11:18Let's go. Comment if you have this one
- 11:20and if that's the case, that's pretty
- 11:21crazy if you're watching this video
- 11:22then. Uh that would be sick. All right,
- 11:24we are actually done with all the 100
- 11:27levels and I want you to comment down
- 11:29below which level you got to because
- 11:30it's a pretty interesting ladder and I
- 11:32honestly would say it's a pretty good
- 11:34reference as well in pulling strength.
- 11:36Some front lever requires a bit more
- 11:37skill work, you maybe weighted pull up a
- 11:39bit more pure strength, but at the end
- 11:41of day it's a pretty good reference of
- 11:43what level you are in at and what you
- 11:45have to sort of try and accumulate
- 11:47during your probably forward years of
- 11:49training. And if you enjoyed videos just
- 11:51like this one then feel free to leave a
- 11:52like and subscribe. It supports the
- 11:54channel and it means that I can do more
- 11:55videos just like this one in the future.
- 11:57And maybe next time I'll do a similar
- 11:59one but we do it for push movements
- 12:01instead. So, hope you enjoyed it and
- 12:02hopefully I'll see you in the next one.
- 12:04Ciao ciao.
