I Taught a Gorilla How to Play Gorilla Tag (seriously) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00In my last video where I taught a fly
- 0:01brain to play Gorilla Tag, I got a lot
- 0:03of comments asking me to teach a gorilla
- 0:05how to play Gorilla Tag. So, over the
- 0:06past couple of days, I have done just
- 0:09that. But, you might be wondering, how
- 0:10is this even possible? How is this
- 0:12different from the fly? And could this
- 0:14gorilla beat me in a 1v1?
- 0:16Well, if you did watch the fly video
- 0:18where I taught a fly brain to play
- 0:20Gorilla Tag, you would know that
- 0:21scientists released an entire fly brain
- 0:23to the public for anyone to download.
- 0:25But, that is not the case for a gorilla.
- 0:27So, I have gone ahead and done a lot of
- 0:29research about gorillas, looking into
- 0:30their senses, vision, hearing, touch,
- 0:33smell, and also looking into how the
- 0:34brain of a gorilla functions as a whole.
- 0:37And after a whole day's work, I had
- 0:38created a copy of the gorilla brain. And
- 0:40then, I put that brain into a gorilla 3D
- 0:43model and then simulated it living life.
- 0:45Which already, all of that I just did, I
- 0:47could have made an entire video on. But,
- 0:49I'm here because I want to see what the
- 0:51gorilla would do if it was wearing a VR
- 0:53headset and playing Gorilla Tag. How
- 0:55would it walk? Could it branch? Would it
- 0:57be any good? And yes, later I'll be
- 0:591v1ning the gorilla to see if it is good
- 1:01at Gorilla Tag. And well, before we put
- 1:03the VR headset on a gorilla, it feels
- 1:05wrong not to give him a name. So, I'll
- 1:07be naming our gorilla Kimchi because uh
- 1:10it sounds cool. And well, after putting
- 1:11the VR headset on our gorilla Kimchi, we
- 1:14can already see that Kimchi can stand.
- 1:16Which the fly in our other simulation
- 1:18could not do at first. But, if I'm going
- 1:20to 1v1 Kimchi later, he's going to need
- 1:22to learn how to walk or even better,
- 1:24run. And the way Kimchi's going to do
- 1:26that is through natural selection.
- 1:28Basically, we split Kimchi up into 40
- 1:30gorillas, all slightly different
- 1:32versions of the same brain Kimchi has.
- 1:34And each brain gets points for whatever
- 1:36they are told to do. So, in this case,
- 1:38Kimchi [music] is told to walk to the
- 1:39ball as fast as he can. If he gets to
- 1:41the ball fast, he gets more points. If
- 1:43he gets to the ball slower, he loses
- 1:45points. And after a round of that, the
- 1:47best Kimchi brains gets to stay. And the
- 1:49worst ones get replaced with copies of
- 1:51the best ones, just slightly changed
- 1:52again, and we repeat this over and over
- 1:55again. I can also speed up the
- 1:56simulation by 16x, so that 1 hour in
- 1:59real life is 16 hours of practice for
- 2:01Kimchi. And after a bit of learning,
- 2:03Kimchi got super good at walking. But I
- 2:05did notice that Kimchi was getting stuck
- 2:07on parts of the walls. And this is
- 2:09because Kimchi doesn't know how to avoid
- 2:11objects yet. So I tried to teach him and
- 2:13I placed a huge cube in the middle of
- 2:15the map to test it. And sure enough,
- 2:17Kimchi was avoiding the cube perfectly.
- 2:19And he also wasn't getting stuck on the
- 2:20walls anymore. But later, I'm going to
- 2:221v1 Kimchi in the forest map. And the
- 2:24forest ground isn't flat, it's bumpy. So
- 2:27Kimchi's going to need to learn how to
- 2:28walk on that bumpy ground. So I moved
- 2:30Kimchi to the forest map, but just the
- 2:32ground. And I also created this heat map
- 2:34of the ground to see where the map gets
- 2:36lower and higher, creating these dips
- 2:38and hills that Kimchi's going to need to
- 2:39learn how to maneuver. And as expected,
- 2:42Kimchi kept getting stuck in this pit.
- 2:44And he couldn't really get up these
- 2:45hills. So I had to train Kimchi a lot.
- 2:47And I did this by doing little races
- 2:49where Kimchi could have hundreds of
- 2:51attempts going up these hills. I also
- 2:53taught Kimchi to look at his hands and
- 2:54think about where he was going to move,
- 2:56which helped him out a lot because now
- 2:58Kimchi is really good at walking. He
- 3:00might actually be considered fast by the
- 3:02average player. He's even faster than
- 3:04the flies. And comparing the flies run
- 3:06and Kimchi's run, it's obvious [music]
- 3:08who's better. Which when I played with
- 3:09the flies in VR, it was super creepy for
- 3:12some reason. And now that Kimchi's even
- 3:13faster than the flies, it has me kind of
- 3:15worried for our 1v1 because I might
- 3:17actually lose. But before Kimchi can 1v1
- 3:20anything, he needs to learn how to play
- 3:22infection. [music]
- 3:23So I made a fully working infection
- 3:25report from Gorilla Tag that Kimchi can
- 3:26train with. And at first, all these
- 3:28[music] tag games were very lame because
- 3:30Kimchi would like to stick to the
- 3:31outskirts of the map. So I taught Kimchi
- 3:33to try and move into the middle of the
- 3:34map and tag other gorillas. Or better
- 3:36yet, cut off other gorillas to tag them.
- 3:39And now the rounds are crazy. Every move
- 3:41is super precise. And I honestly wasn't
- 3:43expecting the gorilla to be this good at
- 3:45infection. But to make sure that Kimchi
- 3:47is still this good when I 1v1 him, I'm
- 3:49going to move him to the actual forest
- 3:51map now and letting him study and figure
- 3:53out where everything is and the best
- 3:55routes to get anywhere. And honestly,
- 3:57Kimchi was pretty stupid in this map. He
- 3:59kept getting stuck under the wooden
- 4:00ramps and tables, but he did learn the
- 4:02fastest routes around the map. However,
- 4:04Kimchi didn't really experiment with
- 4:06branching or climbing things, which was
- 4:07weird since gorillas usually climb and
- 4:09do things like that in trees. So, I set
- 4:12up a race to teach Kimchi to go up the
- 4:13trees and made it to where if Kimchi was
- 4:15on the floor for more than 3 seconds, he
- 4:17would be reset just like the floor is
- 4:19lava. Which will hopefully help him get
- 4:21onto an object like a tree. And I even
- 4:23showed Kimchi a video of a pro brancher
- 4:25[music] and taught him how to flick his
- 4:26hand and stop the branches while
- 4:28planning where he's going to jump. And
- 4:29while Kimchi was learning how to climb
- 4:31up the trees, I wanted to see if Kimchi
- 4:33could also climb up tree house, which
- 4:35[music] he actually was able to do. I
- 4:37also tried to teach Kimchi how to wall
- 4:38climb, but he wasn't really getting it.
- 4:40Which does make some sense because
- 4:42gorillas don't even know how to climb up
- 4:43walls like that. And after a lot more
- 4:45training, Kimchi finally made it up the
- 4:47tree. It is however like one in every 60
- 4:50tries that actually makes it up the
- 4:51tree, but it is still really cool that
- 4:52the gorilla was able to learn how to do
- 4:54this. And lastly, I had Kimchi learn how
- 4:56to traverse these wooden platforms and
- 4:58ramps, which is again really easy for
- 5:00Kimchi for some reason. But now that
- 5:02Kimchi knows his way around forest, I'd
- 5:04let Kimchi put all of his training
- 5:05together to practice infection [music]
- 5:07in forest. And it was crazy. The
- 5:09gorillas were juking each other, and
- 5:10they were even cutting each other off.
- 5:12And so now, I think it's time for me to
- 5:14get on VR and 1v1 Kimchi myself to see
- 5:17if the gorilla can be as good or even
- 5:19better than a human at Gorilla Tag.
- 5:22All right, guys. I'm currently in VR
- 5:24right now with the gorilla. Oh my gosh,
- 5:27yo, that's crazy. They're incredibly
- 5:28fast. Look at Look at that. Oh my gosh.
- 5:31Now, before I do our little 1v1 with
- 5:33Kimchi, I do want to see what this would
- 5:35look like with 40 other gorillas just
- 5:37like over here cuz right now there's
- 5:38only nine. I want to hear how loud it'll
- 5:40get cuz like you can just like hear all
- 5:42their footsteps sound effects.
- 5:44Oh my gosh, that is creepy. Dude, I
- 5:45don't know. With the 5 video too, it's
- 5:47just creepy whenever all these gorillas
- 5:49were chasing after me. Oh wait, I want
- 5:50to see if they can get me up in tree
- 5:52house before I do 40 player. Come on up
- 5:53here.
- 5:54Okay, they're low-key stupid. Let me go
- 5:56down a few steps give them a little bit
- 5:57of like a tutorial. [music]
- 5:59There you Yep. Yep. Come on. There you
- 6:01go. There you go. All right, I'm going
- 6:02to real quick turn it up to 40 gorillas.
- 6:04I want to see what that would look like.
- 6:06Oh my gosh. There are now 40 other
- 6:09gorillas with me. It is loud. It is very
- 6:11loud. Look at them all. Oh my gosh. He's
- 6:13got tagged.
- 6:15What are they doing? Why am I lagging?
- 6:16Yo gorillas, chill. Like can I can Oh my
- 6:19god. Oh my gosh. Yo, yo, yo. Okay, wait.
- 6:22Some of them got the idea. Like that
- 6:24one. That one has the idea.
- 6:25And he's
- 6:26Oh my god. Oh my gosh. Oh, I'm lagging.
- 6:31They're so fast. These people I thought
- 6:33they were just people. These gorillas
- 6:34look human. Okay, I need to blend in
- 6:36with my pack, bro. Oh and they're Oh my
- 6:37god. Yo, yo, chill. Chill. [laughter]
- 6:40What? There's another one. Oh, chill.
- 6:44Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh, jukes.
- 6:48The tagged ones are going to pop over
- 6:49this hill. I can already tell. Yeah, oh
- 6:50my Oh my gosh. This way.
- 6:54All right, time for the one V one. All
- 6:56right, I'm currently here. That is
- 6:57Kimchi and Kimchi is going to chase me.
- 6:59The skirmish started. He has 60 seconds
- 7:00to try and tag me. We already know, bro.
- 7:02I I don't think this gorilla can beat
- 7:03me. Just look at this. Look and he
- 7:05shoots up. Uh-huh. Easy win. Oh. Oh.
- 7:08Oh.
- 7:11And we're up. Yeah, we're good. We're
- 7:12good. That's an easy win. I ain't going
- 7:14to lie. Okay, my turn. I'm going to try
- 7:15to tag Kimchi. Kimchi, no. Go that way.
- 7:17No, no, no. That way. No, no, no. No,
- 7:18that way. Like I'm right here, bro. Just
- 7:20go, bro. What is he doing? I swear they
- 7:22were better in the infection. What is he
- 7:23doing? Whoa.
- 7:25Boom. Oh. Yo, you juked me. All right,
- 7:27now I'm going to I'm going to go
- 7:28underground. I'm going to give Kimchi a
- 7:29chance to try and tag me. This is cool
- 7:31though too cuz I can just juke them and
- 7:33it's like perfect. Dude, Kimchi sucks.
- 7:34Oh my gosh.
- 7:38Oh, no way. All right, go Go Kimchi. Go.
- 7:41Don't run to the wall, you idiot. Stupid
- 7:43gorilla.
- 7:43>> You just ran into me.
- 7:44>> Whoever wins this wins it all, I guess.
- 7:46>> All right, Kimchi, run. Come here. Come
- 7:48here. This is it. Oh. Oh. Okay, yep.
- 7:50Kimchi, you got to beat this time on
- 7:51screen. [music]
- 7:53Oh. Oh my You almost just did that.
- 7:54Okay.
- 7:55Ooh. Ooh.
- 7:57Ow. Ow.
- 7:59Did you just beat me?
- 7:59>> I think Kimchi actually just beat me.
- 8:02There's no way I'm getting off. I'm
- 8:03actually getting off, dude. Oh my god.
