I Studied 1,000 Hooks, Here’s How to ACTUALLY Go Viral — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00The single most reason why your reels or
- 0:01short-form videos don't perform are bad hooks,
- 0:03and I kid you not, fixing and understanding
- 0:05your hook game will get you views, lots
- 0:08of them.
- 0:08So, recently, thousands of creators applied to get
- 0:11their hooks analyzed by me, and most of
- 0:13them make these simple mistakes that crush retention,
- 0:15make people swipe away before they even know
- 0:17what's up, and as a result of that,
- 0:19make the algorithm hate you.
- 0:20So, today, I'll pick three creators and fix
- 0:23their hooks with some tricks and strategies that
- 0:25have helped my clients gain millions of views,
- 0:27and that you can actually instantly implement yourself
- 0:29as well.
- 0:29All right, so the first issue is probably
- 0:30one of the biggest problems I see with
- 0:32hooks, and it's this.
- 0:34Think of people swiping through their reels feed
- 0:36as being on autopilot, and a lot of
- 0:38creator gurus talk about this, but they never
- 0:40really explain the reason why and how to
- 0:42deal with this.
- 0:43So, when people swipe, they basically have this
- 0:45automated muscle memory at this point to keep
- 0:47swiping until something hits their brain receptors, where
- 0:51the brain goes, hmm, that is interesting.
- 0:54And ideally, I've actually done lots of research
- 0:56on that.
- 0:57A lot of people recently actually swipe, swipe,
- 0:59swipe, and then it takes the brain a
- 1:00little longer to kind of process it, and
- 1:02then they swipe back again, and this seems
- 1:04to be like a big major trigger indicator
- 1:07for the algorithm at this point.
- 1:08And because of all of that, this process
- 1:10happens so fast that you need to carefully
- 1:12construct your hooks to basically hit those triggers
- 1:15as fast and as best as possible to
- 1:17get people from your target audience to basically
- 1:19do that.
- 1:20Stop and think and be like, hmm.
- 1:22So, essentially what you want to do at
- 1:23all times is you want to open loops
- 1:25and don't close them as long as possible,
- 1:27basically keeping them tangling at all times.
- 1:29And when you do close the loop, you
- 1:31want to open another one.
- 1:32This is essentially what we can see clearly
- 1:34here with our first creator, Max.
- 1:36Malgo, Max.
- 1:38Let's just call her Max.
- 1:39So, let's just take a look at this
- 1:40video right here.
- 1:41Things I don't do being lean over 40.
- 1:43So, based on the cover, sounds interesting, but
- 1:45let's take a look first.
- 1:54Okay.
- 1:56So, at this point, we're already past the
- 1:58hook. And here's the thing.
- 1:59People at this point don't care.
- 2:01People don't even know what the context of
- 2:03the video is.
- 2:03And this is how you need to think
- 2:05when especially crafting your hooks.
- 2:07People sit, they swipe on autopilot, and then
- 2:09they see this frame starting with this.
- 2:12And somebody in the kitchen saying, I definitely
- 2:14don't cut out carbs.
- 2:16I'm like, okay, cool.
- 2:18But like, why?
- 2:19And why should you cut out carbs?
- 2:20I don't get the context, right?
- 2:22It's like going to a hardware store and
- 2:24somebody comes up to you and is like,
- 2:25I never pull out.
- 2:27And you're like, huh, what?
- 2:29But he's like, yeah, I mean, the screws
- 2:32obviously halfway through a project.
- 2:33I always finish what I start.
- 2:35You already notice here, there's actually a very
- 2:37fine line from being borderline criminal and getting
- 2:40people's scroll swapping attention, right?
- 2:42And the fix to that whole thing is
- 2:44simply adding context as easy as that.
- 2:46So, the first thing I would do here
- 2:48is slap that context right at the top
- 2:51of the screen.
- 2:51Let's just do this together.
- 2:52So, let's slap on the safe zone.
- 2:56The first thing you can actually see already
- 2:58from the first sort of frame here, not
- 3:00really the actual first frame, but the hook
- 3:02is that this sling right here is actually
- 3:06overlapping with the comment box.
- 3:09You instantly see it's just way too big
- 3:10and honestly, it doesn't look good.
- 3:12So, the first thing I want to do
- 3:13here is literally remove the caption just to
- 3:16show you how much cleaner that is.
- 3:18So, we're just going to hit the generative
- 3:20fill.
- 3:20So, boom, looks pretty, looks pretty good actually.
- 3:23Looks a lot cleaner.
- 3:24Captions usually can be a lot smaller, but
- 3:26let's not even get into that.
- 3:27The second thing is, like I said, adding
- 3:29context to this whole thing.
- 3:30And by adding context, I wouldn't just say
- 3:33like the cover image of this video says,
- 3:36things I don't do being lean over 40.
- 3:38I mean, it's not bad, but I try
- 3:40to create even more of a curiosity gap
- 3:42with this whole thing to basically force people
- 3:44to watch even further.
- 3:46Because suddenly they have this whole open loop
- 3:48in their head and they're like, okay, now
- 3:49I need to watch further.
- 3:50To kind of create that and be able
- 3:52to craft that, you need to understand your
- 3:55target audience in an actual way, right?
- 3:58And in that case, the content of the
- 3:59reel itself, if we watch the whole video,
- 4:01is a gold mine.
- 4:02Because basically she says, I'm lean over 40,
- 4:05but I definitely do eat carbs.
- 4:07And that in and itself challenges a common
- 4:09belief, one of the strongest forms of creating
- 4:12hooks, right?
- 4:13So, remember that.
- 4:14In this case, just to make it a
- 4:15little shorter and a little snappier, I'd say
- 4:18lean at 45 and I eat carbs every
- 4:21day or something like this.
- 4:22So, let's just, you know, I'll just do
- 4:24it here right in front of you so
- 4:25you can see, because, you know, the second
- 4:28part of this whole thing is actually making
- 4:29this look better, but let's get into that.
- 4:32And I eat carbs every day.
- 4:35Okay.
- 4:36So, obviously we're not going to make this
- 4:37work.
- 4:39Carbs every day.
- 4:40And if we have here a safe zone,
- 4:42we can already see it needs to be
- 4:44smaller, way smaller than you might think.
- 4:47Also, I'm going to play around with this.
- 4:49I mean, it doesn't look bad.
- 4:51Then you can make it a little bigger.
- 4:53Eat carbs every day.
- 4:55Make this a little there.
- 4:57And you know, one thing you can instantly
- 5:01see right there is that the way this
- 5:04whole shot is framed, and it's actually a
- 5:05big part of why people actually stop scrolling
- 5:09is that it basically overlaps with this part
- 5:13right here.
- 5:14And there's just no way, there's basically clutter.
- 5:16This one is clearly a kitchen.
- 5:18This is a person.
- 5:19This one is safe zone, safe space to
- 5:22put your text, but this is virtually unusable.
- 5:25So, you know, there's almost no way of
- 5:27making this look good.
- 5:28One thing you could do at all times
- 5:30is just slapping some background thing right there.
- 5:34As we can see, it looks a little
- 5:36too big, so make it a little smaller.
- 5:38I eat carbs every day, right?
- 5:40Already not that bad, to be honest, if
- 5:43you ask me.
- 5:44A few things you could play around with,
- 5:47just a few extra lessons right here for
- 5:49you guys, is that now you can play
- 5:52with font, weight, for example, and I eat,
- 5:57you put this a little smaller, like medium,
- 5:59and carbs every day, also like medium, and
- 6:04suddenly it's just way easier for the eye,
- 6:07basically, you know, as you can see right
- 6:09here.
- 6:10So you kind of read this.
- 6:11I actually like it quite a lot, right?
- 6:13But just to kind of make you understand
- 6:16that, yeah, the hook is cool.
- 6:19The spoken hook is cool.
- 6:20It opens up some sort of curiosity gap
- 6:22with what she says and what she has
- 6:24here.
- 6:24You know, this challenge is a common belief,
- 6:26but all of this is still pretty off.
- 6:29So let's actually try to fix that.
- 6:31And what I'm going to do is I'll
- 6:32pull this picture into Chatubity and actually try
- 6:35to create a nice looking frame to just
- 6:39prove the point for you right here.
- 6:41Create a real screenshot where you put her
- 6:42into the frame.
- 6:43Nice lighting, natural, and a kitchen with a
- 6:45big bowl of unhealthy carbs in the bottom
- 6:48half of the screen.
- 6:49I wrote this because I want to create
- 6:50even more sort of a contrast because, you
- 6:52know, curiosity gaps and stuff like this.
- 6:54Scroll, stopping visual, hook real, aspect ratio, 9
- 6:58by 16.
- 6:59Let's just see what it will come up
- 7:00with.
- 7:01All right, so awesome.
- 7:02This actually looks very close.
- 7:04Man, this is just insane.
- 7:07So let's just take this one.
- 7:08Just to prove a point, let me just
- 7:09put this right here.
- 7:10It kind of overlaps, so I'm going to
- 7:12flip the colors.
- 7:13A very easy way.
- 7:14Black and white, white on black.
- 7:15It's all the same.
- 7:16You know, if we overlay this, still pretty
- 7:18good.
- 7:18And you can just see basically the difference,
- 7:22right?
- 7:22Of a shot like this and a shot
- 7:25like this.
- 7:25Especially if you have some nasty carbs right
- 7:28there, maybe make them even grazier, more unhealthy.
- 7:31And suddenly people are going to have a
- 7:34reason to stick around and be like, really?
- 7:36What's she doing?
- 7:36How does she do it?
- 7:37I love noodles.
- 7:39Right.
- 7:40Next one, Stefan from Slovakia.
- 7:42His problem is actually getting reached and I
- 7:43can actually instantly see why.
- 7:45So let's go step by step right here.
- 7:47So first of all, the first thing, the
- 7:49first impression that I have is amazing, great
- 7:51pictures, especially these ones.
- 7:52And you can understand what's going on.
- 7:54Carousels are always better than actual pictures, but
- 7:58here's the thing.
- 7:59Even with carousels, you need, you need a
- 8:02hook in some form.
- 8:04In this case, it's really, there's no hook.
- 8:07There's just a picture, you know, and just
- 8:08a different version of the same picture.
- 8:11Now to kind of come back to the
- 8:12elements of every hook needs to contain is
- 8:15first of all, a, you know, like a
- 8:17setup of something that makes people in your
- 8:21target audience actually care and ideally plants some
- 8:24sort of picture in hindsight.
- 8:27And that gives them a reason to stick
- 8:29around because they want that question to be
- 8:31answered at some point, because that's exactly what
- 8:34they're interested in and something that they ideally
- 8:36identify with.
- 8:38So with that being said, the profile that
- 8:40you have also has to sort of pass
- 8:42this.
- 8:43It's exactly what I'm looking for.
- 8:44It's what I, what's interesting for me, sort
- 8:47of test.
- 8:47And that one is totally off here because
- 8:50this is the first part of the profile,
- 8:53by the way, you're from Slovakia and this
- 8:54is Bratislava.
- 8:56I hang out there quite, quite a lot.
- 8:58Actually, most people who find you through reels
- 9:00actually come to this feed.
- 9:02And if you take a look here, that
- 9:04is totally off, right?
- 9:06There's a big mismatch between the photo feed
- 9:09and actually the reels feed.
- 9:10And here there's basically great pics, but no
- 9:13hooks at all.
- 9:14And here's actually bad reels.
- 9:16If you ask me, if we just take
- 9:17a look at this one right here, honestly,
- 9:20pretty bad reels, even though it's kind of
- 9:23funny.
- 9:26Very, very bad reels, to be honest, and
- 9:28bad hooks, right?
- 9:30And that instantly takes away all the credibility
- 9:32that you have.
- 9:33So let's take a look at this one.
- 9:34Who can relate?
- 9:37Okay.
- 9:38Let's mute this here, but basically talk about
- 9:42the hook.
- 9:42Who can relate?
- 9:43And then this first frame right here, it
- 9:46looks pretty bland, right?
- 9:47What is the need?
- 9:48Ask yourself, what is the need you fulfill
- 9:50for your target audience with this?
- 9:52What is the question that you want to
- 9:55plant in people's head?
- 9:57Who can relate is not a strong question
- 9:59because I'm like, I don't know what this
- 10:02even is about, so I'm gone, right?
- 10:04So to me, this kind of looks like
- 10:06it's trying to farm views, especially with this
- 10:09twist at the end there, but it's not
- 10:11really serving a purpose, not really talking to
- 10:14your actual target audience, which is, I guess,
- 10:16people who are into your photography, right?
- 10:20And the thing is, especially about photography accounts
- 10:23on Instagram, seeing as this was the first
- 10:25big platform for photographers, things have changed quite
- 10:28a bit, right?
- 10:29It's not just about photos anymore, unfortunately, right?
- 10:32And I can kind of understand the frustration
- 10:33here.
- 10:34Lots of photographers have, but these days are
- 10:37over because there's just a million photographers and
- 10:40taking pictures is a skill set, but there's
- 10:42just a lot of people out there, right?
- 10:44So what you actually need to focus on
- 10:46with all these things is thinking about the
- 10:49story within the photo, the emotional connection within
- 10:52a photo, right?
- 10:53Making people relate with either the photo or
- 10:56the photographer, ideally, right?
- 10:57Again, why?
- 10:58Because there's a gazillion photographers out there and
- 11:00you're not special.
- 11:01That is until they get to understand your
- 11:03personality or your why, or the emotions behind
- 11:06it, like I said.
- 11:07So again, just this one, take a look
- 11:10at this picture, like just a bunch of
- 11:15pictures.
- 11:15Unfortunately, I don't understand what's going on right
- 11:17here.
- 11:20Not even a voiceover.
- 11:22So this one looks cool.
- 11:23Let's take a look.
- 11:24I need to mute this.
- 11:28But yeah, pictures, cool pictures, but that's just
- 11:32about it.
- 11:33Now, let me show you an example from
- 11:35a former client of mine who was going
- 11:38through the career mentorship at basically from zero.
- 11:40And he's doing every, all of these things,
- 11:42obviously that I talked about right now, pretty,
- 11:44pretty well.
- 11:45This is Consti.
- 11:45He's in somewhat of a different photography niche,
- 11:48but also a very, very saturated one, the
- 11:51wildlife photography one.
- 11:52Let's just take a look at some of
- 11:53his examples.
- 11:54Obviously, for example, my photos 10 years ago
- 11:58versus now.
- 12:08Right.
- 12:09And it's also basically just showing pictures, but
- 12:11suddenly we have a connection.
- 12:12First of all, we see where we see
- 12:14him in some crazy gear with a crazy
- 12:17camera and some crazy setting.
- 12:19So a story instantly unfolds.
- 12:21And what is the question in my head?
- 12:23First of all, what is he doing?
- 12:24Is he a very professional photographer and what's
- 12:27going to happen?
- 12:27Because now I'm invested 10 years ago.
- 12:30He's been doing this for a while.
- 12:31He's actually looks pretty young still.
- 12:33So, you know, then continues to go, but
- 12:36we'll just talk about the hooks right here.
- 12:38Not bad photos, but some are kind of
- 12:39bad.
- 12:40And then again, my photos now taught a
- 12:43better or not.
- 12:44And that doesn't matter in this case, actually
- 12:47the quality of the photos doesn't matter that
- 12:48much in this case, because people are ideally
- 12:50people are going to fight anyway in the
- 12:52comments.
- 12:52And that would, that's what makes people go
- 12:54viral, but it's basically people getting brought on
- 12:58the journey, right?
- 12:59It's suddenly you're like with him.
- 13:01He shows some emotion as well, smiling somewhere
- 13:03here, you know, for example.
- 13:05And it's such a different frame if you
- 13:08ask me, right?
- 13:09So people are going to be like, like,
- 13:10how can I create photos?
- 13:11Like you, man?
- 13:11Like why did you, how can you travel?
- 13:14Why, where did you learn all of this
- 13:17and stuff like this?
- 13:17And then, you know, people ask you this,
- 13:19obviously it's the whole monetization avenue because you
- 13:23can teach people that.
- 13:24And suddenly your life is just changing directions
- 13:26and ways you've never basically thought about before.
- 13:29So whereas if we go back to Stefan's
- 13:31videos, zero emotional connection, even with the cool,
- 13:34like these ones are amazing.
- 13:36I love these, but even there, right?
- 13:38The connection is just not there because we
- 13:40don't, we don't even get to the point
- 13:42of looking at the videos more closely because
- 13:44we just don't care.
- 13:45Cause there's so many photos out there, right?
- 13:47So to recap here, think about what major
- 13:50pain points your audience actually cares about, and
- 13:52then make that first frame and hook so
- 13:54compelling that people just need to keep watching,
- 13:57right?
- 13:57Try to figure out whether your hook makes
- 13:59viewers have a question or not.
- 14:01So go back to your hooks and think
- 14:02about what is the question you want people
- 14:03to pop in their head when watching this.
- 14:05And in this case, this is not even
- 14:07about photography.
- 14:08I don't even know what's going on versus
- 14:10right.
- 14:11Something clearly, even one that's not performing.
- 14:14I mean, that's the same kind of example
- 14:16right here, but something totally different.
- 14:20Now I'm anticipating what's the shot and why,
- 14:23why did it get a hundred K look
- 14:24beautiful delivers on the promise right away, actually
- 14:28elevates it.
- 14:28Beautiful.
- 14:29Awesome.
- 14:30All right. Last one is Ella, a morning coffee creator.
- 14:32And she says she struggles with views and
- 14:34a stagnant following.
- 14:36So let's take a look at one video
- 14:38from her.
- 14:41I'm going to put some different music in
- 14:43there because YouTube's going to flag it, but
- 14:45remember this video, by the way, we've kind
- 14:47of pulled her through the hook generator already
- 14:50at some point in one of our recent
- 14:52videos, probably you don't remember because nobody seems
- 14:54to watch this thing, but essentially I have
- 14:57a free hook generator that where you can
- 14:59screenshot this whole thing, pull it in.
- 15:01And here's what the hook generator actually set.
- 15:03It gave this whole thing a hook score
- 15:05of three out of 10 said that I
- 15:07would say this hook sucks.
- 15:08And I actually agree because there's zero curiosity
- 15:11and no emotional trigger in there.
- 15:13Remember very similar to the things we talked
- 15:15about before.
- 15:16And if we look here, first of all,
- 15:18everything looks kind of cluttered.
- 15:20So we don't even know like it's even
- 15:23so, so cluttered here that there's no real
- 15:26focus on this latte and it doesn't kind
- 15:29of stand out.
- 15:30And this just clutters it too much.
- 15:32Plus the text overlays with all the other
- 15:34things, as well as honestly, this even makes
- 15:37me more confused here just because it's all
- 15:40like a mash of a lot of things
- 15:42coming together based off of all the principles
- 15:44that we talked about before, planning a picture,
- 15:46planning a question, actually, and making a first
- 15:49frame decluttered and, um, actually opening some sort
- 15:53of curiosity loop, curiosity gap.
- 15:55Here's what I would do right here.
- 15:57And for this case, let's go back to
- 15:59her old friend, Chachabitty, because I don't want
- 16:00to go downstairs and create a coffee.
- 16:02I can't do that.
- 16:03Obviously.
- 16:03Otherwise I would have a coffee account.
- 16:05Let's just pull this in there.
- 16:07And I say, create me an aesthetic Instagram,
- 16:08real first frame shot of a vanilla blueberry
- 16:11ice latte and a glass.
- 16:12I give some context, blah, blah, blah.
- 16:15It doesn't matter, but let's see what it
- 16:16comes up with.
- 16:17Here's what it came up with.
- 16:18Looks pretty good.
- 16:19Actually, honestly, it looks pretty, pretty good, man.
- 16:22It looks so real, but let's just pull
- 16:24this in to Photoshop and let's just compare
- 16:26the two examples right there.
- 16:28As you can see right here, it's a
- 16:29total difference.
- 16:30It's like night and day.
- 16:31And honestly, you might be like, this is
- 16:33way harder to create.
- 16:33I need like cameras and stuff like this.
- 16:36You actually don't.
- 16:37With your phone, if your phone is less
- 16:38than, let's say four years old, you can
- 16:40recreate this shot basically without having any extra
- 16:43equipment apart from maybe a light.
- 16:46But then again, if you have a window
- 16:47in your kitchen, easy to do, right?
- 16:49Just notice that here, like all the shadows
- 16:52coming together and the wall, no depth in
- 16:55the image and stuff like this.
- 16:56Total difference, right?
- 16:57Now, with that being said, this looks actually
- 16:59pretty cool.
- 17:00Looks actually a little similar here as well.
- 17:02One thing I can see is that this
- 17:04blueberry thing, don't ask me if it really
- 17:06looks like this.
- 17:07But let's just say.
- 17:07The first thing I would add here is
- 17:09a visual hook, a text hook.
- 17:11Sorry, text hook.
- 17:12This in and of itself is a visual
- 17:14hook already.
- 17:15We don't want to give away like she
- 17:16does here, vanilla blueberry iced latte.
- 17:19Because maybe people in her target audience might
- 17:21be like, okay, this is something weird.
- 17:22But I would see this, I'd be like,
- 17:24it's nothing weird.
- 17:25I just don't feel like it right now.
- 17:26I'm going to swipe away.
- 17:27Whereas you want people even like me who
- 17:29are remotely interested in interesting coffees to think,
- 17:33oh, that is interesting.
- 17:35I wonder what that is.
- 17:36I wonder how it tastes, right?
- 17:38Thinking about the question.
- 17:39So the first thing I would do is
- 17:41basically open the curiosity gap here and say
- 17:44something like this coffee should not taste good,
- 17:47for example.
- 17:49Not, and then, you know, same old spiel.
- 17:52We're just going to create some background overlay
- 17:54that Instagram is going to do anyway for
- 17:56you.
- 17:56Let's make it white, for example.
- 17:58Should not taste good.
- 18:00Instantly better.
- 18:01One thing from before, instead of playing around
- 18:05with the font weight, we can play around
- 18:06with the color picker.
- 18:08Notice how if I use red, it instantly
- 18:10looks a little off and cheapish.
- 18:12It still looks cool, but honestly, honestly, see,
- 18:15in this case to make things cool, just
- 18:17play around with it, but not, I mean,
- 18:19why not?
- 18:20Let's just use the red one.
- 18:21Why not?
- 18:22Put a bunch of dots here just to
- 18:23open it more.
- 18:25There you go.
- 18:25Look at this.
- 18:26But now my friends, we're getting even deeper
- 18:28because that in itself is already a strong
- 18:30hook, way better to this.
- 18:32Let's open the loops even more.
- 18:34Cause if you look, this coffee should not
- 18:36taste good.
- 18:36Cool.
- 18:37Opens a loop, but instantly we kind of
- 18:39see, okay, has something to do with blueberries.
- 18:41So I'm like, I already kind of get
- 18:42half the answer.
- 18:43So I solved it myself.
- 18:44So there's no need for me to keep
- 18:46watching.
- 18:46So here's what I would actually do.
- 18:48Sneaky little trick that I would do here
- 18:50to make this even crazier.
- 18:52First of all, take the blueberries, blur them.
- 18:55Look at this.
- 18:57Maybe blur them even more just so people
- 19:00kind of get a sense of what's going
- 19:01on.
- 19:02And then what I want is something like
- 19:04this.
- 19:07Honestly, I think yellow is better, but again,
- 19:10a lot of the times I would actually
- 19:12recommend you to do it with any, with
- 19:13Photoshop or with whatever you have until you
- 19:16kind of get a feel for what looks
- 19:17good and how to kind of edit elements
- 19:19in there.
- 19:20You just play around with it and you
- 19:21can see this one is actually, see, I
- 19:23would have never thought about this color.
- 19:24I'd be like yellow, red, but like just
- 19:27doing that with the whole composition here.
- 19:29Now I lost that.
- 19:30This looks actually pretty, pretty cool.
- 19:32Now let's do some outer glow because I'm
- 19:35a nerd.
- 19:35There you go.
- 19:37And suddenly you have a first frame where
- 19:39you're like, what is this?
- 19:41And then you basically show what to do
- 19:43and don't give away this thing until all
- 19:46the way at the end.
- 19:46But this is all part of another video,
- 19:48but you could just see night and day
- 19:50difference.
- 19:50So if you want to get your accounts
- 19:51and content reviewed for free, link is in
- 19:53the description.
- 19:54And if you implement these things and you're
- 19:56still stuck, obviously it's because your whole content
- 19:58strategy is off and the rest of your
- 19:59video is off.
- 20:00So watch this video next and I'll walk
- 20:01you through a process that will make you
- 20:03go grow better than ever before.
