Full transcript
- 0:00I spent 15,000 on storytelling courses
- 0:03in the past few years but in these
- 0:05courses I learned three major lessons
- 0:07that made the entire investment worth it
- 0:10if you apply these lessons you will take
- 0:11your story from let say this average
- 0:13story to this WOW story let's go lesson
- 0:17number
- 0:18one quickly think of a childhood memory
- 0:22now any memory that pops to your mind
- 0:24your brain is probably going like
- 0:26landing on something right got it okay
- 0:29now how old were you in that memory um
- 0:32what did you feel in that memory and
- 0:34also why do you think you remember that
- 0:37memory I'll tell you why it's probably
- 0:40because of the emotions involved with
- 0:42that these can be pleasant emotions like
- 0:44happiness or excitement or unpleasant
- 0:47emotions like fear or sadness compare
- 0:50that with let's say something that
- 0:52happened a week ago in class in a
- 0:54meeting in an interaction with a friend
- 0:56we probably forgot 99% of that now if
- 1:00you want to be remembered with your
- 1:01story you got to bring in emotions so
- 1:05big idea number one bring in emotions
- 1:08Into Your Story one very powerful
- 1:10technique to make any story more
- 1:12emotional is to share the thoughts of
- 1:15the character in that crucial moment of
- 1:17the story we all have tons of thoughts
- 1:19throughout the day right share some of
- 1:21these thoughts what does the character
- 1:23hope dream fear plan whatever they want
- 1:26to have in their lives now let me give
- 1:29you two examples okay uh first example
- 1:32instead of saying oh I was very excited
- 1:35to give that presentation say I thought
- 1:38oh man I'll crush this this will be the
- 1:40best presentation of my life my boss
- 1:42will probably look at me and give me the
- 1:43promotion after that second example um
- 1:47instead of saying oh I was beating
- 1:49myself up over the 10 pounds that I have
- 1:52gained say I
- 1:55thought what is going on with you
- 1:58Phillip right you can't even even stay
- 2:00one day without sugar like what's wrong
- 2:02with you why are you so
- 2:05inconsistent do you see the difference
- 2:07there on one it was very neutral it was
- 2:09not very exciting the other was sharing
- 2:11the thoughts in immediately increasing
- 2:14the stakes of that story now just keep
- 2:17in mind that your thoughts they're not
- 2:19very intellectual right give your
- 2:21listeners these raw unfiltered thoughts
- 2:25that will make it IM more interesting
- 2:27all right if you combine this lesson
- 2:29with the next lesson your stories will
- 2:31be better than 99% of the stories out
- 2:33there lesson two let me give you two
- 2:36examples that show the lesson okay first
- 2:39example well on that day um very
- 2:42surprisingly I lost my
- 2:44job you'd be like ah whatever right why
- 2:47would I care let me now give you a
- 2:49second example um on that day I walked
- 2:53into my manager's office and it's this
- 2:55cold office like no decoration on the
- 2:57wall no natural sunlight and at that
- 3:00moment my manager asked me to sit down
- 3:02I'm like this is weird right he had
- 3:04never asked me to sit down before in his
- 3:06life and then my manager
- 3:09said look Phillip um I I like working
- 3:14with you I think you're a great guy but
- 3:16our investors asked us to be leaner wait
- 3:19what what do you mean leaner what are
- 3:21you talking about well Phillip
- 3:24um we got to let you go do you see the
- 3:28difference the result is the same but in
- 3:31the second example I take you into the
- 3:33physical moment of the story so lesson
- 3:36number two bring your listeners into the
- 3:39scene that scene can be any physical
- 3:42location for example it could be the
- 3:44first scene could be you in your
- 3:46manager's office the second scene could
- 3:48be you in the bathroom I don't know
- 3:51maybe crying the third scene could be
- 3:53you standing in front of the office in
- 3:55the rain whatever it is take your
- 3:59listeners into the scene of that story
- 4:01so describe all the details involved
- 4:03with this the colors the smells the
- 4:05sight the dialogue all the details that
- 4:08bring your story to life scenes and
- 4:10emotions are very powerful if you
- 4:12already have a story but a lot of people
- 4:15struggle with having the right story
- 4:16that they could tell so let's fix that
- 4:19lesson
- 4:20three now the one thing that prevents
- 4:24people from telling stories the most is
- 4:27that they don't think that they have any
- 4:29interesting stor us to tell they're like
- 4:31oh my life is just normal right I guess
- 4:33I don't have that many cool interesting
- 4:36experien that I could
- 4:38use well what I learned in all these
- 4:40courses is the problem is not that you
- 4:42don't have any interesting experiences
- 4:45the problem is that you don't know how
- 4:47to spot them lesson number three you
- 4:49already have incredible stories you just
- 4:52need to dig them up now how can you do
- 4:54that you can do that by doing a powerful
- 4:56exercise called first last best worst by
- 4:59Matthew digs now how does it work you
- 5:02take out a sheet of paper or you open a
- 5:03spreadsheet and you put in five columns
- 5:06first prompts then first last best worst
- 5:11now the prompts can be anything that
- 5:13triggers a memory let me give you an
- 5:15example let's say my prompt is gifts so
- 5:18I asked myself uh what was my first gift
- 5:22like ah yes that was that Hansel that I
- 5:24got when I was three years old don't
- 5:26know why my parents got this uh then I
- 5:28asked myself uh what was my last gift oh
- 5:33yeah that was that weighted blanket I
- 5:35got for my birthday um what was my best
- 5:39gift M definitely the tedex coach that I
- 5:42got for my sister for my birthday and
- 5:45let's see what was my worst gift
- 5:48definitely the Peppermill that I got
- 5:50from my friends from the NBA worst gift
- 5:53screw you guys for
- 5:54that now at that point I only note down
- 5:57one or two words to remember that memory
- 6:00I don't go into the story yet after that
- 6:02I go into the other prompts that I want
- 6:04to cover now what are other prompts that
- 6:06could be kiss injury hobby job car um
- 6:12book trouble whatever it is go through
- 6:16more prompts to help you uncover some of
- 6:18these memories once you have done that
- 6:20maybe for like 10 minutes of just trying
- 6:22to uncover these memories you can then
- 6:24look at your entire table or your entire
- 6:27sheet and see out of all of these
- 6:30memories are there any memories that
- 6:32stand out any memories that are a little
- 6:34bit more emotional more surprising or
- 6:37more entertaining well that's your story
- 6:40all right these were the three lessons
- 6:42I've learned from all these storytelling
- 6:44courses but just in case you want to go
- 6:46a little bit deeper into storytelling
- 6:47you may want to check out this next
- 6:49video in this video I'm going to share
- 6:51the three lessons I've learned from
