Full transcript

1. 0:00I was brushing my teeth when I saw a
2. 0:01black number one floating above my head
3. 0:03in the mirror. I thought I was seeing
4. 0:04things and tried to grab it, but it
5. 0:06slipped through my fingers. Downstairs,
6. 0:08Dad had 9046 over his head. Dad, do you
7. 0:11also see numbers above my head? He shook
8. 0:13his head confused. So, I said, "Never
9. 0:14mind." and headed out. Every person on
10. 0:16the street had a large [music] number.
11. 0:18So, I tried to figure out why I only had
12. 0:20one, but then I saw a woman with zero. I
13. 0:22thought she'd know what the number meant
14. 0:23and ran towards her when suddenly a car
15. 0:25hit her. Someone screamed, "She's not
16. 0:27breathing." and my legs buckled. I
17. 0:29looked at the one above my head and
18. 0:30realized it was the number of days I had
19. 0:32left to live. I ran home trying to
20. 0:34convince myself this wasn't real, but
21. 0:36the next day my number was down to zero.
22. 0:38I was set to die. I screamed and tried
23. 0:40swiping it, punching it, but it stayed
24. 0:42right there telling me I couldn't change
25. 0:44my fate. But, Dad [music] was walking
26. 0:45around with 9045 above him. So, I came
27. 0:48up with a plan. I told him, "Dad, please
28. 0:50stay inside all day. I can't explain
29. 0:52without sounding crazy, but I'm begging
30. 0:54you." He narrowed his eyes. "Okay, son.
31. 0:56I trust you. I'm going to cancel my
32. 0:58plans." I immediately ran to my room. My
33. 1:00plan was to just stay up here and Dad
34. 1:02had 9045 days, so he'd stop anyone
35. 1:05[music] if they tried to break in. Hours
36. 1:07later, my number was still at zero. I
37. 1:09only had 6 hours [clears throat] left to
38. 1:10survive and thought [music] I could make
39. 1:11it, but suddenly I smelled smoke. It was
40. 1:14seeping under my door and I heard flames
41. 1:16spreading downstairs. I shot out of bed
42. 1:18crying as I ran because my death was
43. 1:20going to be a house fire. But, that's
44. 1:21when I saw my dad screaming. He was
45. 1:23trapped behind a massive pillar and
46. 1:25couldn't get out while flames grew
47. 1:26around him. His number was suddenly at
48. 1:28zero. My heart instantly sank because
49. 1:30that meant [music] he was going to die
50. 1:31today, too. But, then I looked at his
51. 1:32zero again and I realized something
52. 1:34incredible. The numbers could change,
53. 1:36meaning I could actually change [music]
54. 1:37my fate. Me and Dad could live. I ran to
55. 1:40Dad and started pushing the pillar, but
56. 1:41it only moved an inch and not enough for
57. 1:43him to get out. My hands [music]
58. 1:44blistered from the heat and my legs got
59. 1:46weak as smoke filled my lungs while our
60. 1:48numbers stayed at zero. I dropped to the
61. 1:50floor, my chest [music] tightening as
62. 1:52the house began collapsing. Dad was
63. 1:53choking, unable to breathe, and I
64. 1:55decided I needed to push one last time.
65. 1:57[music] But just as I was about to get
66. 1:58up, my number changed to 23,011.
67. 2:01I stared at it from the floor in shock.
68. 2:03But then I took a breath and the
69. 2:04realization dawned on my face. Dad, get
70. 2:07[music] down. The air is better here. He
71. 2:08dropped to the floor and his number
72. 2:10became 9045. He crawled through the tiny
73. 2:13gap I'd made coughing as the fire
74. 2:15spread. We crawled out [music] and
75. 2:16collapsed on the front lawn sobbing into
76. 2:18each other's arms our new numbers above
77. 2:20our heads.
