I Ran in Sandals for 1 Year — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:01these are running sandals as you can see
- 0:03they look very different from a typical
- 0:04running shoot and I decided to run in
- 0:06these sandals for a whole year why let
- 0:08me explain for 3 years I've tried many
- 0:10different pairs of running shoes but all
- 0:11of them left me injured my shins hurt my
- 0:13feet were flat and a spot on my left
- 0:15foot went numb but then I read Born to
- 0:17Run and learned about the taramara tribe
- 0:18run 50 to 80 M A Day In sandals
- 0:20injury-free so I bought a pair of
- 0:22running sandals to test them out
- 0:24myself this is what I learned after
- 0:26running in sandals for a year
- 0:32since I was a kid I have worn running
- 0:34shoes with thick cushioning so it was a
- 0:36completely new experience running on
- 0:37thin pieces of rubber when I first tried
- 0:39on the sandals I immediately felt the
- 0:41difference compared to how cushion
- 0:42running shoes are the sandals felt like
- 0:44bricks I felt the ground way more than I
- 0:45was used to and I did not know how my
- 0:47legs were going to handle this luckily I
- 0:49came prepared Born to Run suggest
- 0:50running at 180 steps per minute since
- 0:53quick light leg contractions are more
- 0:54economical than big forceful ones so I
- 0:56played a metronome on my phone to run to
- 0:58the beat hopefully this would lower the
- 1:00impact on my legs when I started running
- 1:02I noticed that the way I ran in the
- 1:03sandals was different than when I ran in
- 1:04running shoes I did not have to push the
- 1:06ground as hard because my feet were not
- 1:08sinking into cushions I also softened my
- 1:10steps because I felt the impact a lot
- 1:11more finally the metronome helped me
- 1:13maintain quick short steps and land on
- 1:15the balls of my feet after one mile I
- 1:16decided to stop I actually felt fine
- 1:18until the next
- 1:20morning my cows were extremely sore and
- 1:23remained sore for the whole week however
- 1:24I noticed my shins were in less pain
- 1:26than usual after a run so the first
- 1:27thing I learned was the truth about
- 1:29running shoes when running in them I
- 1:30would land hard on my heel with my foot
- 1:32out in front known as over striding my
- 1:33cows were underused so all the force was
- 1:35going into my shins but I should have
- 1:37been landing on my 4 foot closer to my
- 1:38body I never noticed how hard I was
- 1:40hitting the ground because I couldn't
- 1:41feel it through the cushioning this
- 1:42caused me to deal with pain for years I
- 1:44also realized that the sandals allowed
- 1:46my toes to spread out freely when I wore
- 1:48running shoes my toes had to squeeze
- 1:49together from how narrow the shoe was it
- 1:51was no wonder that I had flat feet and a
- 1:52num spot on my left
- 1:54[Music]
- 1:57foot when I was in high school I ran a
- 2:00Max effer mile once a week for PE class
- 2:02so out of habit I ran the same way in
- 2:04college but with the sandals I had to
- 2:05take my run slower so I increased the
- 2:07distance to Pace myself I chose a 5K and
- 2:09my first time was a 4123 which was a
- 2:121319 per mile Pace I wanted to improve
- 2:14that time so I ran a 5k Every week after
- 2:164 months I got a time of 2835 this was a
- 2:19912 per mile Pace however my legs were
- 2:21very sore and it took the whole week for
- 2:23them to recover I couldn't get a faster
- 2:24time without having stronger legs then I
- 2:26went on vacation and made the mistake of
- 2:28taking 26 days off running even though I
- 2:30still trained at the gym my legs were
- 2:32very sore when I got back into running
- 2:33it was as if I was new to running again
- 2:35so the second thing I learned was that I
- 2:36needed world class legs running shoes
- 2:38enable most people to run comfortably
- 2:40without needing strong legs but since
- 2:41sandals have no cushioning the legs have
- 2:43to be strong enough to handle the forces
- 2:45of running so I started to take my runs
- 2:46more slowly rather than trying to run
- 2:48for a faster time I started running at a
- 2:50slow pace no faster than 13 minutes per
- 2:52mile I was also running only once a week
- 2:54so I aimed for three runs a week instead
- 2:55then I created a strength training
- 2:57routine this included a ton of calf
- 2:58raises especially with the bent knee
- 3:00since that happens often in running I
- 3:02also included the tip bar for the front
- 3:03chin muscles and the Peterson step up
- 3:05since it challenges balance and loads
- 3:07the shin in a bent knee position finally
- 3:09I added exercises for my upper legs like
- 3:11hip flexors and nordics they trained
- 3:13picking up and driving the leg the last
- 3:14thing I did was not skip my runs I
- 3:16learned how quickly I can lose my gains
- 3:18if I stop running I also realized that
- 3:19strain training was not enough to
- 3:21maintain the condition of the legs if I
- 3:22need to take a break from running in the
- 3:24future jumping rope would be the next
- 3:25best option since it mimics the
- 3:27explosive movements of running
- 3:31most of my runs were on a rubber track
- 3:33but sometimes I ran on the road I
- 3:34noticed that when I ran on the road I
- 3:36felt more impact on my body my legs and
- 3:38back would get sore more easily than
- 3:39when I ran on the track at first I wore
- 3:41my cushion running shoes to see if it
- 3:43would make a difference however my body
- 3:45was just as sore after the run so I went
- 3:46back to the sandals but reduced the
- 3:48speed and duration of the runs this was
- 3:49much more effective in reducing the
- 3:51impact on my body so the third thing I
- 3:53learned was how to run on hard surfaces
- 3:55it is better to train mostly on soft
- 3:56surfaces before progressing to hard ones
- 3:58if the surface is hard then I should
- 4:00lower the intensity of the run I also
- 4:02learned that running shoes do not lower
- 4:03the impact on my legs but they do
- 4:05protect the skin on my feet my feet have
- 4:07formed calluses since I started running
- 4:08in sandals however when I ran in my
- 4:10running shoes the skin on my feet stayed
- 4:11mostly fine despite this I didn't like
- 4:13the narrow fit of the shoe in addition
- 4:15the cushions annoyed me since they
- 4:16resisted my natural poration this put a
- 4:18lot of strain on my arches I'm so used
- 4:20to running in sandals now that I have no
- 4:22reason to return to running
- 4:26shoes running in sandals has helped me
- 4:28learn to put my ego aside and and listen
- 4:30to my body it helped me undo the damage
- 4:31I did from wearing running shoes I cured
- 4:33my foot problems because I gave my feet
- 4:35enough space I also learned that most of
- 4:37my shin painan came from running too
- 4:38fast with bad form so the three steps to
- 4:40curing my shin pain are running
- 4:41correctly running slowly and training
- 4:43consistently thanks to the sandals I
- 4:45learned how to run without
- 4:46[Music]
- 4:49pain after running over 170 mi in
- 4:52sandals most of them in a social context
- 4:54I have received many questions so I'll
- 4:56be answering the questions you may have
- 4:57in this section of the video
- 5:01there were many times people have talked
- 5:03to me after seeing me run in sandals for
- 5:05example this was my friend's reactions
- 5:06when they first saw me running them uh
- 5:08see grass yeah real yeah like with those
- 5:14yeah what are those like regular flip
- 5:16yeah interesting I would not regular
- 5:19flip no it doesn't hurt they're comt for
- 5:21you yeah that's what it matters he's
- 5:23going for when my friends first saw the
- 5:24sandals they didn't say anything about
- 5:26them and that's what most people do
- 5:28others ask questions and give comments
- 5:29I've never had a rude interaction but I
- 5:31have gotten roasted before what are
- 5:33those but because I comfortable running
- 5:35in the sandals I don't mind when people
- 5:36ask me about
- 5:37[Music]
- 5:40them I run in the Alchemy orache sandals
- 5:43by deliberate life designs I got these
- 5:44for $97 which is actually a normal price
- 5:46for a running shoe if you want to know
- 5:48more about these sandals watch this
- 5:49guy's video I'll link his review in the
- 5:51description by the way this is not a
- 5:52sponsored video I am not getting paid
- 5:54for
- 5:55[Music]
- 5:57this I would recommend the SEL because
- 6:00they teach you how to run correctly and
- 6:01if you get used to them you won't have
- 6:03to rely on running shoes anymore however
- 6:05I would only recommend them to those
- 6:06that are willing to deal with the
- 6:07challenge even if you are a season
- 6:08Runner you will have to start small and
- 6:10gradually build up your runs you can
- 6:12easily get injured if you run too much
- 6:13too
- 6:17soon Ready set go running is now an
- 6:23enjoyable activity go go go you're
- 6:27halfway at
- 6:30[Music]
- 6:35Mich it has taught me to take
- 6:37accountability for myself you know
- 6:39Michael Jackson yeah yeah you know
- 6:40that's like man in the mirror yeah you
- 6:42have to make that change you man in the
- 6:44mirror right you can make that sh and
- 6:46the sandals proed that we do not need to
- 6:47rely on Modern running shoes Simplicity
- 6:49was what my body needed to solve my
- 6:51problems sometimes less is more
