- 0:00I have bought or used just about every
- 0:02Canon RF mount camera that's come out in
- 0:05the past decade and I'm going to share
- 0:06what I like and dislike about each
- 0:09camera and which ones I use the most and
- 0:11would recommend you buy. Let's dive into
- 0:13it.
- 0:15So here's a list of every RF mount Canon
- 0:17camera that I've bought in order from
- 0:19least expensive to most expensive. The
- 0:21R50 V, the R10 which I'm letting someone
- 0:24borrow right now, the R8, the R7 which I
- 0:27sold, the R6 V which I did not buy but I
- 0:30did use for a couple weeks, the R5 Mark
- 0:33II which replaced my R5, the R5C, the
- 0:36C50, the C70, the C80 which is shooting
- 0:39this video and the C400. And the reason
- 0:42I own all of these is because I test
- 0:44gear and make tutorials for So no, I
- 0:46don't need all of them but I have used
- 0:48all of them so I have a good idea of the
- 0:50pros and cons between each. Now this is
- 0:52not going to be an exhaustive
- 0:54comparison, just the main pros and cons
- 0:56that are most important to me. But
- 0:58before we dive in, big thanks to
- 0:59Musicbed for sponsoring this video.
- 1:01You'll be hearing their music throughout
- 1:03the whole video and I'll put the name of
- 1:04the song in the corner and [music] links
- 1:06in the description as well. Now as many
- 1:08of you know, Musicbed is my go-to source
- 1:10for licensing music for a few reasons.
- 1:13Number one, their music actually conveys
- 1:15emotion. They have [music] top-tier
- 1:16talented musicians who know how to
- 1:18create cinematic dynamic songs that make
- 1:20you really feel something. You can tell
- 1:22that Musicbed isn't just throwing up
- 1:24songs on their site so that they can
- 1:26brag about how huge their selection
- 1:27[music] is. They are hand selecting the
- 1:30talented artists on their emotional
- 1:32impact and creative integrity. Number
- 1:34two, in a world that is getting fatigued
- 1:36by AI content, Musicbed is committed to
- 1:38real music made by real artists. And as
- 1:41someone who can tell the difference when
- 1:42there's no human soul in the music, I
- 1:44want to support real musicians putting
- 1:47real human effort to bring us real music
- 1:49[music] art. And last thing I love is
- 1:50that most of their songs have
- 1:52instrumental versions so you can get
- 1:53lyrics when you want them or take them
- 1:55out when you want the music [music] to
- 1:56be in the background like right now so
- 1:58you can focus on the person talking. So,
- 2:00thanks again to Musicbed for sponsoring
- 2:02this video. I proudly back their
- 2:04services. If you haven't tried them out
- 2:06yet, I highly recommend them to enhance
- 2:08your storytelling. And if you click the
- 2:09link below, [music] you can get a free
- 2:1114-day trial to start testing it out for
- 2:13yourself. Well, let's now talk about
- 2:15each of these cameras and what I like
- 2:17and don't like. First up is the R50V.
- 2:21This is as low end of a Canon camera
- 2:23that I would recommend buying. Yes,
- 2:25there are [music] some PowerShot cameras
- 2:27cheaper than this and you have the R100
- 2:29that's a tad cheaper, but the R50V is a
- 2:32significant upgrade for just a little
- 2:34bit more money. So, this is the camera
- 2:35I'd recommend beginners to start out
- 2:37with and I did a whole video showing
- 2:39this camera in a professional interview
- 2:41setting. I'll link that below. But, the
- 2:43pros to the R50V is that it shoots in 4K
- 2:4630 with no crop. It has up to 2 hours of
- 2:49continuous recording. It shoots in C-Log
- 2:51for those who want to color grade, but
- 2:53also gives you amazing straight the
- 2:55camera colors if you just use a standard
- 2:57Rec. 709 profile. It's super small,
- 2:59light, and easy to use and by far the
- 3:01smallest Canon camera that I own. It
- 3:03also has a vertical mounting option
- 3:05which only about half of my cameras
- 3:06have. And it has the basic video needs
- 3:08like a mic jack, headphone jack, zebras,
- 3:10and so on. But, some of the cons to be
- 3:13aware of, there's not a lot of
- 3:14affordable RF Canon lens options to pair
- 3:17with this very affordable camera. So,
- 3:19you'll probably want to buy third-party
- 3:20lenses like this Sigma 30mm that's on
- 3:23the camera right now. Also, the battery
- 3:25life isn't great. I don't like Canon's
- 3:27smaller E17 batteries. I'd prefer if
- 3:30they'd make the camera bodies just a tad
- 3:31bigger so they can fit their E6P
- 3:33batteries cuz they have [music] twice
- 3:35the energy capacity. Also, this doesn't
- 3:37have 4K at 60 frames per second, only up
- 3:39to 30. So, that's a bummer, but
- 3:41understandable at this price point. It
- 3:43can also overheat like most cameras in
- 3:45this price range. And no, it does not
- 3:47have IBIS which makes it less ideal for
- 3:50vlogging or handheld shooting. So,
- 3:52overall thoughts, I've had this for a
- 3:53few months and I can safely say that in
- 3:562026, this is my top camera
- 3:58recommendation for beginners out of all
- 4:00the brands, not just Canon cameras. So,
- 4:02bang for buck beginner video camera,
- 4:04R50V is it. But, if the limitations
- 4:07mentioned are deal breakers, you'll need
- 4:09to shell out more money. So, moving up
- 4:10to the next price range, we have the
- 4:12R10. I did an R10 versus iPhone video a
- 4:14couple years back. I'll link that below
- 4:16if you want more details on the R10, but
- 4:18overall, I was not super impressed with
- 4:21that camera, specifically for that
- 4:23price. Now, some of the pros, it has a
- 4:25viewfinder, which the R50V does not. It
- 4:27didn't have C-Log 3 when I first bought
- 4:29it, but it has added it since in a
- 4:31firmware update. It does allow 4K at
- 4:3360fps shooting, but that's with a 1.5
- 4:36crop, which in my opinion isn't very
- 4:38useful. And some of the cons to be aware
- 4:40of, still no IBIS, still overheats, no
- 4:42vertical mounting, which the R50V does
- 4:44have, and really no other major
- 4:46advantages for video shooters over the
- 4:48R50V, but at twice the price. So,
- 4:51overall, I would recommend getting the
- 4:53R50V and save some money, or skip the
- 4:55R10 and go to the next level, which is
- 4:58going to be the R8. Pros of the R8 over
- 5:01the R10, this is Canon's least expensive
- 5:03full-frame R camera, if you don't count
- 5:05the original Canon R, which is now 8
- 5:07years old, so I wouldn't even recommend
- 5:09that one cuz it's really old tech. So,
- 5:11if you're wanting more background blur,
- 5:12better low-light performance, the full
- 5:14usage of nicer full-frame RF lenses,
- 5:17this is your least expensive option, and
- 5:19it can do 4K at 60fps with no crop.
- 5:22[music] So, 4K slow-mo is important to
- 5:24you, this is as cheap as I'd go. The
- 5:26cons to be aware of is that it still
- 5:28uses the smaller E17 batteries, so
- 5:31battery life is not going to be great. I
- 5:33think that was a big miss on this
- 5:35camera. Also, it will still overheats.
- 5:37There's also no vertical mount like the
- 5:39R50V. And at this price point, probably
- 5:42the biggest disappointment for a lot of
- 5:43people is that it didn't come with IBIS.
- 5:46I think this would have been a much more
- 5:47popular camera had it had IBIS, but then
- 5:49again, it would have been more
- 5:50expensive. [music] So, you can't get
- 5:52everything at these price points.
- 5:53Overall thoughts, I haven't used this
- 5:55camera much because of the lack of IBIS,
- 5:57making it less useful for handheld
- 5:59shooting, and because it doesn't share
- 6:01the same bigger E6P battery as the rest
- 6:03of my nicer cameras. It's just way less
- 6:05convenient to use. So, overall, a great
- 6:08first full-frame camera for the price,
- 6:10but a couple big cons that prevent me
- 6:12from wanting to use it professionally.
- 6:14Well, the next camera in our lineup is
- 6:15the R7. Again, I don't have it here. I
- 6:17sold that. But, the R7 was the first one
- 6:20that I've actually used on a
- 6:21professional shoot. I shot my brother's
- 6:23wedding with it as a B camera with my R5
- 6:26being the A camera, and I was pleasantly
- 6:28surprised with how much I liked it. The
- 6:30footage was very comparable to the much
- 6:32more expensive [music] R5. So, some of
- 6:34the pros would be that it's the least
- 6:35expensive Canon camera that has IBIS.
- 6:38So, if IBIS is a must, this is your
- 6:39starting point. It's also the least
- 6:41expensive option that has the bigger and
- 6:43better E6P batteries. So, improved
- 6:45battery life and swappable with
- 6:47higher-end Canon cameras. And like the
- 6:49R8, this also has 4K at 60 with no crop
- 6:52and C-Log 3. But, I was shocked to
- 6:54discover that I couldn't get the R7 to
- 6:56overheat. I shot in 4K at 60fps at that
- 6:59wedding, and my R5 overheated several
- 7:02times, but the R7 didn't even show signs
- 7:04of overheating. So, it was my reliable
- 7:06camera on that shoot. Biggest cons of
- 7:08the R7 though is that it is an APS-C
- 7:11sensor. That's probably why [music] it
- 7:12didn't overheat because it's reading out
- 7:14a smaller sensor. But, if you're not a
- 7:15full-frame sensor snob, this camera
- 7:17[music] is amazing. Also, there's only
- 7:19IPB recording options, no All-I, which
- 7:22basically means that bit rates are
- 7:23lower, which is great for saving on
- 7:25storage space, but your image [music]
- 7:26will be more compressed. So, overall
- 7:28thoughts, I do recommend the R7 as an
- 7:31affordable camera [music] for weddings,
- 7:32events, vlogging, handheld, etc. But, I
- 7:34did end up selling this one as I do
- 7:36prefer my full-frame options. And I'll
- 7:38link my full review of the R7 below if
- 7:40you want to learn more. Well, the next
- 7:42camera in Canon's lineup is the R6,
- 7:44which has now made a Mark II, a Mark
- 7:46III, and just recently the R6V. So,
- 7:48clearly this is a popular line for Canon
- 7:51as they've put way more iterations into
- 7:52this than any other line. Now, I've
- 7:54never bought any of the R6s because I
- 7:56like my R5s better, but I did spend a
- 7:58few days testing out the R6V. And for
- 8:01video shooters, that's definitely the
- 8:03one I'd recommend out of those R6
- 8:05options. First of all, because the price
- 8:07points, you can save about $400 the R6V
- 8:10over the R6 III. The III is going to be
- 8:12better for photos, but the R6V has
- 8:15better video features. Most notably, it
- 8:17has a cooling fan so it's not going to
- 8:19overheat. Technically, it can still
- 8:21overheat, but I couldn't get it to
- 8:22overheat in very demanding formats.
- 8:24Whereas the R6 III and the R5 options
- 8:26are going to overheat. The R6 line is
- 8:27also the least expensive full-frame
- 8:29Canon camera that comes with IBIS.
- 8:34And unlike the R7, the R6 line gives you
- 8:36a lot more codec options including raw
- 8:38recording, making this a big step up in
- 8:41professional high-quality imagery over
- 8:43the R7. Also, this gives you 7K
- 8:45resolution options, so it's the least
- 8:47expensive Canon camera that offers
- 8:49something higher than 4K. And it also
- 8:51allows for 4K at 120 frames, whereas all
- 8:55the cameras below that only go up to
- 8:571080p at 120 frames. The R6 line is also
- 9:00the least expensive Canon camera with
- 9:02open gate, which I love using. And this
- 9:04is also Canon's least expensive camera
- 9:06that comes with C-Log II, which is
- 9:08Canon's premium log for best possible
- 9:10range. So, as you can see, the R6 line,
- 9:12specifically the R6V, is the biggest
- 9:15leap in professional video performance.
- 9:17So, understandably, it's a very popular
- 9:19line. On a side note, this price point
- 9:22of 2 to 4,000 dollars is the most
- 9:24popular price point for a camera body
- 9:26among my full-time filmmaker members
- 9:28that are running video production
- 9:30companies. So, if you're wondering what
- 9:31that point of diminishing returns is as
- 9:33far as how nice of a camera you should
- 9:35buy for professional use without
- 9:37breaking the bank, I'd say the R6V is
- 9:40that sweet spot. But a couple cons to be
- 9:42aware of of the R6V and the reason why I
- 9:44didn't end up buying it is that it
- 9:46technically can still overheat in
- 9:48extreme conditions, though I don't think
- 9:49many will run into that. And yes, it
- 9:51comes with IBIS, but it's slightly worse
- 9:53IBIS than the R6 Mark III and the R5s,
- 9:56and I personally didn't like the IBIS
- 9:57performance as much as my R5 Mark II.
- 9:59And there's a few other things that the
- 10:01C50 offers that that doesn't that I'll
- 10:03mention in a minute that makes me choose
- 10:05the C50 over the R6V, which [music] made
- 10:08it so I didn't need to buy it. But
- 10:09overall, the R6V is really hard to beat
- 10:11for the price, and if I'm starting a
- 10:13video production company today, that's
- 10:15the camera I'd buy as my A camera if I
- 10:17didn't have the money to go up to the
- 10:18much more expensive C50. So I highly
- 10:21recommend. Let's move on now to the R5
- 10:23line. Similar to the R6, this has seen
- 10:26multiple iterations in the R5, the R5
- 10:28Mark II, and the R5C. I have owned all
- 10:30three, and I've loved all three. We'll
- 10:32talk about the R5C first because it is
- 10:34currently less expensive than the R5
- 10:36Mark II, and I've shot many [music]
- 10:38projects with the R5C, and it has been
- 10:40an amazing camera. Some of the pros
- 10:42would be that it has a beautiful 8K
- 10:45image that's absolutely gorgeous. If you
- 10:47just need pure resolution, Canon's R5
- 10:50line rivals my RED cameras in clarity
- 10:52and detail. It does 8K up to 60 frame
- 10:54per second in raw, but in a very small
- 10:57form factor given the specs, so it's a
- 10:59great gimbal shooting camera. It's also
- 11:01a hybrid camera, takes amazing 45
- 11:03megapixel photos. And this is the least
- 11:05expensive camera in Canon's cinema line,
- 11:08which means it comes with a different
- 11:09menu, different video-specific features
- 11:11that you're not going to find on the R
- 11:12line like shutter angle and a dedicated
- 11:14time code port, or complete reliability
- 11:17with no overheating because it does come
- 11:19with a fan. Some of the biggest cons to
- 11:21be aware of of this camera and the
- 11:23reason why I no longer use it very often
- 11:25is because it only shoots in C-Log 3 in
- 11:28non-raw formats. So if I want C-Log 2, I
- 11:31have to shoot in raw. And that's the
- 11:33other big con is the 8K raw are
- 11:34beautiful, but they are massive file
- 11:36sizes and not easy to edit. So, you're
- 11:39going to need a beefy computer and a lot
- 11:40of hard drive space. Also, it does not
- 11:43shoot open gate, nor does it have IBIS.
- 11:46Also has a micro HDMI, whereas most of
- 11:48Canon's newer cameras are coming with a
- 11:50full HDMI. And it's a power hog, so the
- 11:53battery life is not going to be great.
- 11:55Though Canon's newer batteries have
- 11:56improved on that a bit. But my overall
- 11:58thoughts are that those cons that I
- 12:00mentioned are showing the age of this
- 12:02camera as it came out in 2022. Canon is
- 12:05fixing a lot of those cons in their
- 12:07newer cameras and even some of their
- 12:09less expensive cameras. So, though this
- 12:10is a very powerful and capable camera, I
- 12:13would recommend the R6V or the C50 over
- 12:15this all day. So, where then does my R5C
- 12:18fit in the mix? Currently, I use the R5
- 12:20Mark II more than my R5C, but if I'm
- 12:23being honest, I keep this camera around
- 12:25more because of the photo-first
- 12:26capabilities as I do like having a
- 12:29dedicated photo camera. So, that's the
- 12:31biggest pro and reason to get this over
- 12:32an R5C, an R6V, or even the C50 is
- 12:35because it's going to take the best
- 12:37photos. And for that reason, this is my
- 12:39favorite photo camera I've ever owned.
- 12:41It takes amazing 45 megapixel photos. I
- 12:44use it regularly for documenting my
- 12:45family and other things in work. Another
- 12:47big pro over the R5C is that it has IBIS
- 12:50and it has C-Log 2 in non-raw formats
- 12:53>> [music]
- 12:53>> and it has that full HDMI. And the
- 12:55autofocus is slightly improved as well.
- 12:57Biggest cons compared to the R5C or even
- 13:01the R6V is that it does overheat. If I'm
- 13:04shooting in 4K at 24 in fine [music]
- 13:06mode, after about 30 or 40 minutes, it
- 13:08starts to threaten to shut me down. So,
- 13:10it's really not very reliable in long
- 13:12format shoots. Another con is that this
- 13:14camera has a softer 4K [music] at 60 FPS
- 13:17image. The C50 and the R6V will be
- 13:20noticeably sharper at 4K 60 as they can
- 13:23do it in fine mode, whereas the R5
- 13:25[music] Mark II maxes out at 30 FPS in
- 13:274K fine. It also does not allow open
- 13:30gate. So, because of those cons, [music]
- 13:32and they are some big ones, I do not
- 13:34recommend this for video shooters over
- 13:36the R6V [music]
- 13:37or the C50. But, as a hybrid photo-first
- 13:40camera, this is [music] one of my
- 13:41favorite cameras I've ever owned. But,
- 13:44moving on now to the Canon C50. This
- 13:46camera is relatively new for me, but
- 13:48I've used it on several professional
- 13:50shoots, and it is quickly becoming my
- 13:51favorite and most used [music] Canon
- 13:53camera. The reason for that is because
- 13:55it still shares the same small size as
- 13:57these other cameras, but it allows open
- 13:59gate at 7K 60 raw and no overheating.
- 14:03And, it also has the ability to attach
- 14:05this XLR top handle, so I can use more
- 14:07professional microphones, whereas the
- 14:09R6V won't be able to do that. Also, this
- 14:12is part of the cinema line, whereas the
- 14:13R6V is not. So, this is going to have
- 14:15shutter angle and a dedicated time
- 14:17[music] code port. But, probably the
- 14:18biggest con of the C50 is the lack of
- 14:21IBIS. Battery life also isn't great.
- 14:24Cinema cameras draw more power than the
- 14:26R series. Yet, this is still using the
- 14:28same battery as the R7. So, I'm often
- 14:31plugging in a V-mount battery when using
- 14:33a gimbal. Also, I wish the XLR top
- 14:35handle enabled 32-bit float audio, but
- 14:38it maxes out at 24-bit. But, overall,
- 14:40the C50 is currently [music] my most
- 14:42used and favorite camera that I own, but
- 14:44there are still cons to be aware of that
- 14:46have me leaning to other cameras for
- 14:48certain situations, which leads me to
- 14:50the C70. This is the oldest RF mount
- 14:53Canon camera I own. It came out in 2020,
- 14:57and yet I still use it 6 years later.
- 14:59And, out of all of my Canon cameras
- 15:00besides the 1DX Mark II, I've probably
- 15:03shot the most footage on this camera.
- 15:05And, the reason for that is because it
- 15:06produces my favorite overall image out
- 15:09of any [music] Canon camera. And, that
- 15:11is due to its DGO sensor, meaning dual
- 15:14gain output. There's something special
- 15:16about the DGO sensor that gives you a
- 15:18slight edge in dynamic range and color,
- 15:21and it just looks better. Not a lot
- 15:23better, mind you, but when I'm coloring
- 15:25this footage, it just feels more
- 15:26effortless to get it to look good.
- 15:28Another big pro is that this is the
- 15:29first camera I used extensively that has
- 15:32built-in [music]
- 15:33ND filters. It's really hard for me to
- 15:35go back to smaller cameras now that I've
- 15:38used built-in ND filters. So, every time
- 15:40I pull out that C50, I am missing that
- 15:43feature. Another big pro is that it has
- 15:44a larger BPA battery. Battery life on
- 15:47these are so much better than the
- 15:49smaller Canon cameras. It also has mini
- 15:51XLR inputs for nicer mics. And even
- 15:53though it only shoots 4K, this is
- 15:55actually my favorite camera to shoot raw
- 15:58in because usually when I shoot in raw,
- 15:59it means I have to use the max
- 16:01resolution and the file sizes are
- 16:02massive and slows down my computer. But,
- 16:04these 4K raw files are very manageable
- 16:07and easy to edit and not overly large.
- 16:09The cons to be aware of on the C70,
- 16:11though, is that it is not full-frame. It
- 16:13is a Super 35 sensor, which means it has
- 16:16a 1.5x crop. So, very similar to an APSC
- 16:19sensor. It's not the end of the world,
- 16:20but it does change the lenses I can use
- 16:22and requires you to buy new lenses. Or
- 16:24what I often did was use the RF to EF
- 16:26speed booster so that I could get the
- 16:28full-frame look. But, then I couldn't
- 16:30use my awesome RF lenses. So, that's the
- 16:32biggest con of this camera. And with
- 16:34that speed booster, and even without it,
- 16:36the 4K image is a little soft on the
- 16:39C70. It's [music] definitely still
- 16:41professionally usable, but for some
- 16:43commercial work or YouTube talking heads
- 16:45where I want to be able to punch in on
- 16:46the image, I prefer the much more
- 16:48detailed images of the RF 5, R6, and C50
- 16:51cameras. Also, this camera has two SD
- 16:54card slots instead of one CFexpress. Not
- 16:56[music] sure why they decided that, but
- 16:58CFexpress is a much preferred media type
- 17:01as they are much faster and more
- 17:02durable. Also, no open gates and no
- 17:05possibility of firmware updating to open
- 17:07gate, probably due to the SD card
- 17:09limitations. [music]
- 17:10And last con is that it's not great in
- 17:12low light. It's not terrible, especially
- 17:14with the speed booster, but there's a
- 17:16lot of other Canon cameras that will do
- 17:17better in low light. So, overall
- 17:19thoughts, I still use this from time to
- 17:21time just because I love the image. So,
- 17:23I'd call this the best image quality for
- 17:25the price from Canon, but I'd love to
- 17:28see them do an updated version as it is
- 17:30now collecting dust on my shelf due to
- 17:32some of the other features that are
- 17:33coming out in newer cameras. Now, the
- 17:35next camera on the upgrade path is the
- 17:37C80, which is what this video is being
- 17:40shot on right now. I use the C80 most
- 17:42for talking head interviews and
- 17:44tutorials and YouTube videos like this,
- 17:46but as far as taking it out in the
- 17:47field, the C50 has kind of stolen its
- 17:49thunder. So, I really don't use it as
- 17:51much as I thought I would. Some of the
- 17:52pros to be aware of, it has 6K raw at up
- 17:55to 30 frames per second, not 60 frames
- 17:58per second, which the C400 does. So,
- 18:00it's a pro that it does 6K raw, but a
- 18:02huge bummer that it doesn't do 6K at up
- 18:05to 60 frames, which means I tend to use
- 18:07my C400 over this for slow-mo. Compared
- 18:10to the C70, it does have a sharper 4K
- 18:13image, so it solved that problem of the
- 18:15C70. It's also full frame, so it solved
- 18:17the smaller sensor problem of the C70,
- 18:20and low light is much improved as well
- 18:22with triple base ISO, and it fixed some
- 18:24other minor quirks from the C70 like
- 18:26adding an SDI port, and it has a second
- 18:28mounting option in the bottom, which all
- 18:30cameras should have that so it doesn't
- 18:32spin if it gets a little loose, and the
- 18:34autofocus is slightly improved over the
- 18:36C70 as [music] well. Some of the cons
- 18:38though is that they took out the DGO
- 18:39sensor, which was a thing I loved most
- 18:41about the C70, so it doesn't quite have
- 18:43the same look to the footage, and
- 18:45unfortunately the C80 doesn't have open
- 18:47gate either, and again because of the
- 18:48dual SD card slots, probably not going
- 18:50to have it in the future, so big bummer
- 18:52there, and still no IBIS. And though the
- 18:54body size of this and the C70 aren't
- 18:57huge, they are definitely a lot harder
- 18:59to fly on a gimbal than something like
- 19:01the C50. So, for that reason alone, the
- 19:04C50 tends to be much more useful in a
- 19:06lot more situations for me. Also, the
- 19:08price of the C80 is a huge con. You
- 19:10could buy two R6Vs for the price of one
- 19:13C80. So, price alone is going to push a
- 19:15lot of people out. So, overall thoughts,
- 19:17a C80 is hard for me to recommend. It's
- 19:19not a great bang for buck camera. It
- 19:21doesn't have some important features
- 19:22that some of the cheaper cameras have
- 19:24like USB-C charging, [music]
- 19:25IBIS, open gate. It's obviously still an
- 19:28amazing camera and is still my favorite
- 19:30camera to use in studio situations. But,
- 19:33for run and gun, I tend to lean more
- 19:34towards the C50 and just deal with
- 19:36needing to plug in a V-mount battery and
- 19:39slap on an ND filter. Let's now move on
- 19:41to the most expensive and final camera
- 19:43in the C400.
- 19:45This is another camera that I have not
- 19:47fully embraced. It fills a very specific
- 19:50need, but it isn't super versatile and
- 19:52therefore not as useful as some of the
- 19:54smaller cameras due to how large it is.
- 19:57Now, some of the pros to be aware of, it
- 19:59has 6K at 60 frames per second raw, same
- 20:02triple base ISO, so great in low light,
- 20:04same full-frame sensor. But, this comes
- 20:07with a positionable, adjustable, and
- 20:09removable screen that is nicer than the
- 20:11built-in screens on all the other Canon
- 20:13cameras, especially for handheld
- 20:15shooting. I can put it up by my face
- 20:17rather than having to stare straight
- 20:18down all day. So, this makes it a much
- 20:20better handheld option than all my other
- 20:22Canon cameras. It also lights up the
- 20:24buttons, so when shooting in dark
- 20:26environments, you can easily see
- 20:27everything. And the C400 does have a
- 20:29CFexpress slot, so it solves that
- 20:32problem of the C70 and C80. And because
- 20:34of that, they were able to give it a
- 20:36firmware update that allows for 6K open
- 20:38gate. Some of the cons to be aware of,
- 20:40however, is that the open gate only
- 20:42works in raw, which is a bummer. Also,
- 20:45this one too does not have the DGO
- 20:47[music] sensor of the C70, does not have
- 20:49IBIS, does not have vertical mounting
- 20:51options. And though the positionable
- 20:53screen is a pro, it's also a con in that
- 20:56it's very bulky, not very good
- 20:57technology as far as being able to
- 20:59quickly position the monitor, and the
- 21:00monitor itself is like 10-year-old tech.
- 21:03Not sure why they couldn't have made it
- 21:04bigger, brighter, and smaller bezels.
- 21:07Also, the C70 and C80 have DC charging
- 21:10via the cable that comes with the
- 21:11battery charger, but the C400 instead
- 21:14requires a very specific four-pin XLR
- 21:17charger, which is great for securing the
- 21:18connection, but they don't include one
- 21:20of those cables with the camera, so you
- 21:22have to spend $80 to buy one separately.
- 21:24So, that was a bad move, Canon. For the
- 21:26price, include the cable. And the last
- 21:28biggest con is the size. You're not
- 21:30going to be mounting this on a gimbal. I
- 21:32mean, you can, but it's not meant for
- 21:33that. And because I shoot a lot of
- 21:35gimbal work, this makes this camera half
- 21:37as useful as all my other cameras.
- 21:39[music] So, overall thoughts, this is
- 21:40probably my favorite camera to shoot
- 21:42handheld with. The larger body size is
- 21:45actually a pro for handheld because it
- 21:46stabilizes the micro jitters. If you
- 21:48don't have IBIS, you kind of need a
- 21:50bigger body. That does make it more
- 21:52fatiguing, but smoother. Again, the
- 21:53positionable monitor makes this much
- 21:55better for handheld as well, so I don't
- 21:57have to crank my neck down the whole
- 21:58day. Yes, you could just add an external
- 22:00monitor to any of these, but as far as
- 22:02what comes with the camera without
- 22:04having to buy accessories, the C400 is
- 22:07ready to go in that regard. And because
- 22:09the monitor is removable, you can always
- 22:10take that off and put an external
- 22:12monitor as well. So, I do use this for
- 22:14handheld shooting, and like the C80,
- 22:16this is also a go-to camera in my studio
- 22:19for talking heads and interviews. Having
- 22:21those built-in [music] ND filters just
- 22:22makes the C80 and C400 much quicker to
- 22:25use in those situations for interviews
- 22:27or handheld documentary work. So,
- 22:29there's definitely a place for the C400
- 22:31in my workflow, but it's not my most
- 22:33used camera. Would I recommend it? For
- 22:35the price, it's really hard to recommend
- 22:38for most solo shooters like myself. For
- 22:40a specific demographic like high-end
- 22:42documentary or commercial work, the
- 22:44price will be worth the features, but
- 22:46for most of you watching, I'd recommend
- 22:47just getting a smaller body and rigging
- 22:49it up when you want the bigger, beefier
- 22:51setup. So, there you have my thoughts on
- 22:53all the RF Canon cameras I have used.
- 22:56Now, I'm going to rank them by how much
- 22:58I use each one and what percentage of my
- 23:00shooting scenarios they get used on.
- 23:02Keep in mind this is not going to total
- 23:04100% because most of my shoots require
- 23:06more than one camera. In last place is
- 23:08going to be the R10. I use it 0%. That's
- 23:11my lending camera for beginner family
- 23:13members. Second to last place is going
- 23:15to be the R8. I also use that 0% mostly
- 23:18because I have much better full frame
- 23:20options. If it had IBIS I'd probably
- 23:22pull it out. Next will be the R50V. I
- 23:24use this on about 5% of my shoots mostly
- 23:26for beginner level tutorial content. By
- 23:29the way, we have a full camera
- 23:30navigation walk-through of that camera
- 23:32and the C50 camera inside Full Time
- 23:34Filmmaker so you can know all the
- 23:35settings I use for best results on both
- 23:38the R line and the cinema line. Next I
- 23:40would rank the R7. I sold it so I don't
- 23:42use it anymore, but it was a great B
- 23:44camera when I had it. Next will be the
- 23:46R5C. I do still use it as like a
- 23:48permanent top-down unboxing camera so it
- 23:51gets used maybe 5% of the time. Next
- 23:53will be the C70. I use that maybe 10% of
- 23:55the time as a fourth or fifth camera on
- 23:57bigger shoots or I otherwise have it set
- 24:00up as a permanent vertical camera for
- 24:01Instagram [music] content. Next will be
- 24:03the C80. I use that probably 30% of the
- 24:06time as a first and second camera for
- 24:08talking heads and interviews. Next will
- 24:09be the C400. Same as the C80 around 30%
- 24:12of the time, but it also gets used more
- 24:14for handheld documentary style shooting.
- 24:16Next I'd put the R6V. I don't own it
- 24:19because of my R5 and C50, but if I
- 24:21didn't have those it would probably be
- 24:23my most used camera. Next will be the R5
- 24:25Mark II. That is my second most used
- 24:27camera at around 50% of my shoots. It's
- 24:30usually coming with me as at least a
- 24:31photo camera, sometimes a B camera or
- 24:34behind the scenes camera because it's my
- 24:36only camera I own with IBIS. It makes
- 24:38for some great handheld BTS. And the
- 24:40number one most used camera I own is the
- 24:42C50. I use this on probably 80% of my
- 24:45shoots as it's great for talking heads
- 24:47and interviews, but also small and light
- 24:49enough to do all my gimbal work and I
- 24:51can rig it up for handheld work as well
- 24:53as needed. So personally, the C50 is my
- 24:55favorite Canon camera right now and the
- 24:57one I'd recommend as the most versatile
- 24:59for video shooters. However, bang for
- 25:01buck, the R6V will give you most of what
- 25:04the C50 offers at a much better price
- 25:07point. So, that would be my top
- 25:08recommendation if you can't afford the
- 25:10C50 or if you just need that IBIS. So,
- 25:14there you have a look at all the
- 25:15different Canon cameras I use and own
- 25:17and when I'd use them. Hopefully, that's
- 25:19helping you decide which is right for
- 25:21your needs. At the end of the day
- 25:22though, any of these cameras can deliver
- 25:25professional results worthy of paying
- 25:27clients because what matters even more
- 25:29than the gear is knowing how to use the
- 25:31gear. And if you'd like to learn how to
- 25:32better use your gear, make sure to check
- 25:34out my free 1-hour filmmaking training
- 25:36where I go over the top 10 mistakes
- 25:38[music] that I see video creators making
- 25:40that's preventing their videos from
- 25:41standing out from the crowd and landing
- 25:43them more clients. Link below to start
- 25:45watching. Also, links below for more
- 25:47in-depth YouTube videos about some of
- 25:49these cameras. And before I get comments
- 25:51asking why I don't just switch to Sony
- 25:53because they have better cameras than
- 25:55all of these. I actually pre-ordered the
- 25:57FX5 because on paper it checks a lot of
- 26:00boxes that none of these Canon cameras
- 26:02offer like a bigger LCD screen, 32-bit
- 26:05flow audio, a DGO sensor in a full-frame
- 26:08body, potentially better battery life in
- 26:10a small body, and 4K at up to 240 frames
- 26:13per second in future firmware updates.
- 26:16So, I'm completely open to using
- 26:17whatever camera allows me to create most
- 26:19seamlessly and most enjoyably, no matter
- 26:21who the manufacturer is. Up till now,
- 26:24every time I've tested other brands in
- 26:25the past, the cons have outweighed the
- 26:27pros for my shooting scenarios, so I
- 26:29haven't felt the need to switch. But,
- 26:30who knows? Maybe the FX5 can convert me.
- 26:33Only time will tell. But, that's it for
- 26:34this video. Hopefully, this was helpful
- 26:36for some of you trying to figure out
- 26:38which Canon camera to buy. They're all
- 26:40great, just pros and cons, but if you
- 26:42have any further questions, please let
- 26:44me know.
