I Made $500k on Upwork: Here Is What They Don't Tell You — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I've made over half a million dollars on
- 0:01Upwork. I'm top 1% of the entire
- 0:03platform. And in the next few minutes,
- 0:05I'm going to talk half of you out of
- 0:07ever using it. Because Upwork, well,
- 0:09it's two things at once. Yes, it's the
- 0:11best freelancing platform that exists,
- 0:13but it's also a machine that eats
- 0:15freelancers alive. Both are true. By the
- 0:17end, you'll know which side of that line
- 0:19you're on. And stick around for the fees
- 0:20because the number everybody argues
- 0:22about is not the one that you should be
- 0:24scared of. First, the case for it,
- 0:26because I'm not going to sit here and
- 0:27pretend that my results happen somewhere
- 0:28bad. Upwork is the single biggest pool
- 0:31of real client money that exists in
- 0:32freelancing. There's billions of dollars
- 0:34of deals done every single year in
- 0:36audited public numbers. The clients who
- 0:39pay monthly retainers, the ones worth
- 0:40thousands a month for years, they're on
- 0:43here. That's where my half a million
- 0:45came from. Not gig scraps. It was long
- 0:47clients won properly. And let me show
- 0:49you both ends of this one account. The
- 0:51first job that I ever won on here paid
- 0:53$374.40.
- 0:56It was tiny. It was taken whilst I was
- 0:58still stacking reviews and building the
- 1:00profile up. But the biggest client that
- 1:02this account has ever produced, an
- 1:03e-commerce business in the US, $111,000
- 1:07from that one relationship. And well,
- 1:09that's the spread. $300 to six figures
- 1:12plus on the same profile. And here's the
- 1:15part that matters about this. The person
- 1:16who won the $300 job could not see the
- 1:18100 grand client coming. You never can
- 1:21from the first rung of the ladder. So
- 1:22the ceiling's real. And before anyone
- 1:24asks, yes, Upwork is legit payments.
- 1:26They sit in escrow before you work.
- 1:28Hourly contracts are payment protected.
- 1:30And in five years, this platform has
- 1:32never failed to pay me. The scams people
- 1:34talk about aren't Upwork. They're bad
- 1:36clients on Upwork. And you'll spot most
- 1:39of them a mile away if you look
- 1:41properly. No payment verification, no
- 1:43spend history, job posts screaming in
- 1:45capital letters. Avoid them like the
- 1:47plague. And the platform itself is as
- 1:50safe as this industry gets. One more
- 1:52thing before the filter, because this is
- 1:53a 2026 review, not a 2022 one. Two
- 1:56things changed. AI flooded the platform.
- 1:59Every job now gets buried under robot
- 2:01proposals, and they all sound identical.
- 2:04And applying costs real money. Both
- 2:06sound like bad news, but both quietly
- 2:08favor you because the freelancer who
- 2:10turns up as a prepared human has never
- 2:12stood out more. Now, let's look at the
- 2:14filter. Reason one that you shouldn't
- 2:16use Upwork is that you think applying
- 2:18should be free. It isn't. Every proposal
- 2:21costs connects and it costs real money
- 2:23about 15 cents per connect. Visibility
- 2:25is an auction. Right now I'm bidding 200
- 2:28connects. That's $30 to sit at the top
- 2:30of a client's short list. In fact, I'm
- 2:32midway through spending $2,119
- 2:35on this exact question live this week.
- 2:38There's a public spreadsheet in the
- 2:40description tracking every application
- 2:42as it happens. The point is this. On
- 2:44Upwork, applying its marketing spend. If
- 2:46you cannot stomach paying to be seen,
- 2:49this is not your platform. And that's
- 2:50fine, but that's the game. Reason two is
- 2:52you won't pick a lane. Upwork is not a
- 2:54skills marketplace. It's a trust
- 2:56marketplace. And a client staring at 80
- 2:59proposals can't tell who's the most
- 3:01skilled, only who looks the least risky.
- 3:03And I do a bit of everything. That looks
- 3:05like risk. Generalists on Upwork fight
- 3:08over scraps. If you're not willing to be
- 3:10known for one thing, the algorithm, and
- 3:12importantly, the clients, they will
- 3:14agree to ignore you. And then reason
- 3:16three is that you need money this week.
- 3:18There's a lag on this platform. We may
- 3:20see it in my challenge this week.
- 3:22Between doing everything right and
- 3:23anything coming back weeks, sometimes
- 3:26months, I sat in it. If your rent is
- 3:28depending on winning a job in the next 7
- 3:29days, then Upwork will shatter your
- 3:31heart. Come back when you've got
- 3:33breathing room. And reason four, your
- 3:35services rinse and repeat. If it's the
- 3:37same thing done the same way over and
- 3:39over, logo packages, quick edits, fixed
- 3:42little products, truthfully, Fiverr will
- 3:44treat you better. Clients come to you
- 3:46there, and the race to the bottom
- 3:48pricing matters less when your delivery
- 3:50is a production line. I ranked every
- 3:52platform in another video. It's linked
- 3:54below. Upwork's edge is custom ongoing
- 3:57relationship work. If that's not what
- 4:00you sell, don't fight for it on here.
- 4:02And then finally, reason five, you won't
- 4:04run it like a business. And I mean
- 4:06vetting clients most of all. Let me tell
- 4:08you where this platform gets properly
- 4:10dark because I've lived through it. You
- 4:12take on a client that you never should
- 4:14have, someone you didn't check, and they
- 4:15will have you over a barrel. Unrealistic
- 4:18demands, scope growing by the day, and
- 4:21you pander into every single request
- 4:23because you're terrified of what one bad
- 4:25review will do to your profile. That's
- 4:27the trap that nobody warns you about. On
- 4:29Upwork, a bad client doesn't just waste
- 4:31your time. They hold your reputation
- 4:33hostage while they do it. It ends in
- 4:35tears 90% of the time. And there's only
- 4:38one way that it happens. You didn't vet
- 4:40them. I can spot these clients a mile
- 4:43off now. The spend history, how they
- 4:44talk about past freelancers, how they
- 4:46describe the work. But I learned the
- 4:48hard way. So vet before you apply.
- 4:51Protect your review score like it's your
- 4:52credit rating. Close contracts properly.
- 4:54If Upwork is a lottery ticket to you,
- 4:56you will get lottery results. Now, count
- 4:59yourself. If two or more of these are
- 5:01you, close the tab. And I mean it. Go
- 5:03build on Fiverr or locally or come back
- 5:06in six months. I just saved you a year
- 5:08and a pile of money. And that's a better
- 5:10review than five stars. But if none of
- 5:13that scared you, a lane, bit of
- 5:14patience, applying treated like
- 5:16marketing, then flip everything that I
- 5:18have just said. The pay wall that
- 5:20filters out the casuals, that's less
- 5:22competition for you. The trust game that
- 5:24starves generalists, well, you're
- 5:26specializing anyway. The lag that breaks
- 5:28the desperate, you plan for it. Every
- 5:30single reason this platform eats people
- 5:33is a reason it pays the ones who fit.
- 5:36Which brings me to the money. Everybody
- 5:37argues about the 10 15% fee. That's the
- 5:40wrong number. 10% for a machine that
- 5:42puts billions of dollars of client
- 5:43demand in front of you is the single
- 5:46cheapest client acquisition that exists
- 5:48in freelancing. Go and try buying those
- 5:50leads with ads and watch what it really
- 5:52costs. The number that should scare you
- 5:54is the one that nobody says out loud.
- 5:57It's the cost of turning up half
- 5:58committed, paying for connects with no
- 6:00lane, applying for a month, and then
- 6:01quitting inside of the lag. That's the
- 6:03expensive version of Upwork. The fee is
- 6:06not the problem. Half in, that's the
- 6:08problem. So, is Upwork worth it in 2026?
- 6:10Well, if you counted two or more reasons
- 6:13back there, then no. A real no. And now
- 6:15you know why, which is more than most
- 6:17reviews will give you. If you counted
- 6:18none, it's not just worth it. It's the
- 6:21strongest ground a serious freelancer
- 6:23can stand on. And I'm so sure of that,
- 6:25I've put $2,000 of my own money on it
- 6:27this very week. That experiment is
- 6:29running right now. The spreadsheets in
- 6:31the description. The results video is
- 6:34coming. Now, hit the comments. Tell me
- 6:35which half you're in. In or out, one
- 6:37comment. I read every single one. And if
- 6:39I think that you've called it wrong,
- 6:41I'll tell you. If you're in, my complete
- 6:43Upwork course is on screen now. It's 45
- 6:46minutes inside this account. Every step
- 6:49from zero. and subscribe because the
- 6:51$2,000 question gets answered on this
