- 0:02Strength,
- 0:04leadership,
- 0:07power,
- 0:08authority,
- 0:11guidance,
- 0:13patience,
- 0:15are God's gift to us
- 0:18as men.
- 0:21We have to cherish that,
- 0:22>> [music]
- 0:23>> not abuse it.
- 0:26I
- 0:27prayed this morning to be a better
- 0:29listener.
- 0:32Didn't work so well.
- 0:33>> [laughter]
- 0:34>> It's we're human.
- 0:36You get back up.
- 0:38Yes, I've been high up on the mountain.
- 0:41I've been blessed.
- 0:45But that's a slippery slope.
- 0:46>> Yeah.
- 0:47>> And it's lonely up there.
- 0:48>> Yeah.
- 0:50>> You know, people don't know that side.
- 0:52We did not come this far to just break
- 0:54down and lose now.
- 0:56I'm a winner.
- 0:58I'm going to win.
- 1:00>> [music]
- 1:01>> True desire in the heart, that itch that
- 1:03you have, whatever it is you want to do,
- 1:06that thing that you want to do to help
- 1:07others and to to grow [music] and to
- 1:09make money,
- 1:10that desire, that itch, that's God's
- 1:12proof to you
- 1:14set beforehand already to indicate that
- 1:16it's yours.
- 1:18Aspire to make a difference.
- 1:23>> [music]
- 1:24>> See, you are what you are in this world
- 1:26as one of one of two things.
- 1:29Either you're somebody
- 1:31>> [music]
- 1:32>> or you're nobody.
- 1:35>> Never give up.
- 1:38Without commitment,
- 1:40you'll never start, but more
- 1:42importantly, without consistency,
- 1:44[music]
- 1:45you'll never finish.
- 1:47It's not easy.
- 1:49If it were easy, [music] there'd be no
- 1:50Denzel Washington. So,
- 1:54keep working,
- 1:56keep striving, never give up, fall down
- 1:58seven times, [music] get up eight. Ease
- 2:00is a greater threat to progress than
- 2:02hardship. So,
- 2:03>> [music]
- 2:04>> keep moving, keep growing, keep
- 2:05learning.
- 2:07See you at work.
- 2:15While it may be frightening, it will
- 2:17also be rewarding.
- 2:20So, you got to get out there.
- 2:22You got to give it everything you got,
- 2:23whether it's your time,
- 2:26your talent,
- 2:28>> [music]
- 2:28>> your prayers,
- 2:30or your treasures. Because taking risk
- 2:32is not just about going for a job. It's
- 2:36also about knowing what you know and
- 2:38what you don't know.
- 2:40It's about being open to people
- 2:43and to ideas.
- 2:46To get something you never had, you have
- 2:48to do something you never did.
- 2:53Because the chances you take, the people
- 2:56you meet, the people you love, the faith
- 2:59that you have,
- 3:01that's what's going to define you.
- 3:03>> [music]
- 3:08>> Don't just aspire to make a living.
- 3:15Aspire to make a difference.
- 3:20Well, as I said, I'm a positive person.
- 3:22I think that you have to take what
- 3:24you're given and and and do something
- 3:26with it. You know, the easiest thing to
- 3:27do is complain about it and give in to
- 3:29that. But, I try to turn that into
- 3:31something positive and so far it's
- 3:33worked for me.
- 3:35You know, it would be easy to to sit
- 3:37here and say uh
- 3:38uh oh, yeah, there's a lot of
- 3:40prejudices, a lot of racism. Well,
- 3:41that's a given. You know, I try to be a
- 3:43positive person and figure out a way I
- 3:45can do better, not not give in to. Small
- 3:48minds
- 3:51>> [music]
- 3:51>> discuss other people.
- 3:54Gossip.
- 3:55Good minds discuss events.
- 3:58Great minds discuss ideas.
- 4:01At 66, getting ready to be 67, having
- 4:03just buried my mother,
- 4:05I made a promise to her and to God
- 4:09to do not just to do good the right way,
- 4:11but to honor my mother and my father by
- 4:14the way I live my life the rest of my
- 4:16days on this earth. I'm here to serve,
- 4:19to help,
- 4:20to provide. When I was young, I starting
- 4:23to really make it as an actor,
- 4:25I came in, I talked to my mother. I
- 4:27said, "Ma, did you think that this was
- 4:28going to happen, I'd be so big, and I'll
- 4:30be able to take care of everybody, and I
- 4:32can do this, and I can do that, and I
- 4:34can" She said, "Boy, stop it right
- 4:35there. Stop it right there." She said,
- 4:37"If you only knew how many people that
- 4:40have been praying for you,
- 4:42how many prayer [music] groups she put
- 4:44together, how many prayer cloths she
- 4:46gave me, how many times she splashed me
- 4:48with
- 4:49holy water."
- 4:51And she said, "Oh, you did it by
- 4:52yourself? I tell you what you can do by
- 4:53yourself. You can go outside, get a mop
- 4:55and
- 4:56bucket and wash them windows. You can do
- 4:57that by yourself,
- 4:59superstar.
- 5:00Everything that you think you see in me,
- 5:02everything that I've accomplished,
- 5:03everything that you think I have, and I
- 5:05have a few things, everything that I
- 5:07have is by the grace of God.
- 5:11Understand that.
- 5:12It's a gift.
- 5:16What are you going to [music] do with
- 5:17what you have? I'm not talking about how
- 5:19much you have. Some of you have money.
- 5:21Some of you have patience. Some of
- 5:23[music] you have kindness. Some of you
- 5:25have love. Some of you have the gift of
- 5:27long-suffering. Whatever it is, whatever
- 5:29your gift is. We all have different
- 5:31talents. Some of you will be doctors,
- 5:33some lawyers, some scientists, [music]
- 5:35some educators, some nurses. It's what
- 5:37you do
- 5:39with what you have.
- 5:40True desire in the heart, [music] that
- 5:43itch that you have, whatever it is you
- 5:45want to do, that thing that you want to
- 5:46do to help others and to to [music] grow
- 5:48and to make money,
- 5:50that desire, that itch, that's God's
- 5:52proof to you
- 5:53sit beforehand already to indicate
- 5:55[music] that it's yours.
- 5:57And anything you want
- 6:00you can have.
- 6:02So claim it.
- 6:04Work [music] hard to get it.
- 6:06When you get it, reach back. Pull
- 6:09someone else up. You only live once.
- 6:12So do what [music] you feel passionate
- 6:14about, passionate about. So you got to
- 6:16get out there.
- 6:18You got to give it everything you got,
- 6:19whether it's your time, your talent, or
- 6:22your treasures.
- 6:23>> [music]
- 6:24>> The world needs your talents. Man, does
- 6:26it ever.
- 6:28Your life will never be a straight path.
- 6:32I was 20 years old. I was at my lowest
- 6:35point.
- 6:36And then one day, and I remember the
- 6:38exact day,
- 6:40March 27th, 1975.
- 6:45I was helping my mother in her beauty
- 6:47shop. My mother owned a beauty shop up
- 6:48in Mount Vernon. And there's [music]
- 6:50there was this older woman. I didn't
- 6:52know her personally, but I I was looking
- 6:53in the mirror, and every time I looked
- 6:55in the mirror, I could see her behind
- 6:56me, and she was staring at me.
- 6:59She just kept looking at me. Every time
- 7:00I looked at her, she kept giving me
- 7:01these strange looks.
- 7:04So she finally [music] took the dryer
- 7:05off her head, and she said something
- 7:06I'll never forget.
- 7:08She said, "Young boy,
- 7:10I have a prophecy.
- 7:12A spiritual prophecy."
- 7:15She said, "You are going to travel the
- 7:17world [music]
- 7:18and speak to millions of people."
- 7:21Now mind you, I'm 20 years old. I'm
- 7:23flunked out of school. In fact, like a
- 7:25wise ass, I'm thinking to myself, maybe
- 7:27she's got something in that crystal ball
- 7:29about me getting back in the school next
- 7:30fall.
- 7:31But maybe she was on to something
- 7:33because later that summer, while working
- 7:34as a counselor at a YMCA camp in
- 7:36Connecticut,
- 7:38we put on a talent show for the campers.
- 7:40And after the show, another counselor
- 7:42came up to me and asked,
- 7:44"Have you ever thought about acting?
- 7:45You're good at that."
- 7:48And in the years that followed, just as
- 7:49that woman prophesied, I have traveled
- 7:51the world, and I have spoken to millions
- 7:53of people through my movies.
- 7:56Don't be afraid to fail. There's an old
- 7:58IQ test with nine dots,
- 8:02and you had to draw five lines with a
- 8:05pencil within these nine dots with
- 8:08without lifting [music] the pencil.
- 8:10The only way to do it was to go outside
- 8:12the box.
- 8:14So, don't be afraid to go outside the
- 8:16box.
- 8:18Don't be afraid to
- 8:20think
- 8:21>> [music]
- 8:21>> outside the box. Don't be afraid to fail
- 8:24big.
- 8:26To dream
- 8:28big.
- 8:30But, remember,
- 8:32dreams
- 8:34without goals
- 8:36are just dreams,
- 8:39and they ultimately fuel disappointment.
- 8:43So, have dreams,
- 8:47but have goals.
- 8:49>> [music]
- 8:49>> Life goals, yearly goals,
- 8:52monthly goals, daily goals. I try to
- 8:55give myself a goal every day.
- 8:58Sometimes
- 8:59just to not curse somebody out.
- 9:01>> [laughter]
- 9:02>> Simple goals, but have goals.
- 9:06Remember, just because you're doing a
- 9:09lot more,
- 9:12doesn't mean you're getting a lot more
- 9:14done.
- 9:17You'll see what I mean about taking risk
- 9:19or being willing to fail.
- 9:22Because taking risk is not just about
- 9:25going for a job.
- 9:27It's also about knowing what you know
- 9:30>> [music]
- 9:30>> and what you don't know.
- 9:33It's about being open to people
- 9:37and to ideas.
- 9:39And I can't think of a better message as
- 9:41we send you off today
- 9:43to not only take risks,
- 9:46but to be open to life,
- 9:48>> [music]
- 9:49>> to accept new views,
- 9:52and to be open to new opinions.
- 9:55Because the chances you take,
- 9:58the people you meet, the people you
- 10:00love,
- 10:02the faith that you have,
- 10:05>> [music]
- 10:05>> that's what's going to define you.
- 10:08So, members of the class of 2011, this
- 10:11is your mission.
- 10:12Never be discouraged.
- 10:15Never hold back.
- 10:18Give everything you got.
- 10:21And when you fall throughout life,
- 10:24remember this,
- 10:26fall forward.
- 10:28I found that nothing in life
- 10:31is worthwhile
- 10:34unless [music] you take risks.
- 10:37Nothing.
- 10:39Nelson Mandela said, "There is no
- 10:41passion to be found
- 10:44playing small
- 10:47and settling for a life that's less
- 10:50than the one you're capable of living."
- 10:53Reggie Jackson struck out 2,600 times in
- 10:55his career, the most in the history of
- 10:58baseball, [music] but you don't hear
- 10:59about the strikeouts. People remember
- 11:01the home runs.
- 11:04Thomas Edison conducted 1,000 failed
- 11:06experiments. Did you know that? I didn't
- 11:08know that.
- 11:09>> [music]
- 11:09>> Because the 1,001st
- 11:11was the light bulb.
- 11:14Every failed experiment [music]
- 11:15is one step closer to success. Now, I'm
- 11:18sure in your experiences in school, in
- 11:20applying to college, and [music] picking
- 11:22your major, and deciding what you want
- 11:24to do with life, I'm sure people have
- 11:26told you to make sure you have [music]
- 11:27something to fall back on.
- 11:30But I never understood that concept.
- 11:33>> [music]
- 11:34>> Having something to fall back on.
- 11:37If I'm going to fall,
- 11:40I don't want to fall back [music] on
- 11:41anything
- 11:43except my faith.
- 11:45I want to fall forward.
- 11:47I figure at least this way I'll see what
- 11:49I'm going to hit. Keep striving, never
- 11:51give up, fall down seven times, get up
- 11:53eight. Without commitment,
- 11:56you'll never start. Without consistency,
- 11:58[music]
- 12:00you'll never finish.
- 12:01What are you going to do
- 12:04with what you have?
- 12:05Those [music] who can, do.
- 12:07Those who can't, talk about those who
- 12:09can.
- 12:13I found that nothing in life
- 12:16is worthwhile
- 12:18unless you take risks.
- 12:20Nothing.
- 12:22Nelson Mandela said, "There is no
- 12:24passion to be found playing small and
- 12:28settling for a life that's less than the
- 12:30one you're capable of living."
- 12:33Now, I'm sure in your experiences in
- 12:34school and applying to college and
- 12:36picking your major and deciding what you
- 12:38want to do with life, I'm sure people
- 12:40have told you to make sure you have
- 12:42something to fall back on. Make sure you
- 12:44got something to fall back on, honey.
- 12:47But I never understood that concept.
- 12:50Having something [music] to fall back
- 12:51on.
- 12:53If I'm going to fall,
- 12:55I don't want to fall back on anything.
- 12:57>> [music]
- 12:58>> I want to fall forward.
- 13:00I figure at least this way I'll see what
- 13:02I'm going to hit.
- 13:06Fall forward.
- 13:08This is what I mean.
- 13:11Reggie Jackson struck out 2,600 [music]
- 13:13times in his career, the most in the
- 13:15history of baseball, but you don't hear
- 13:17about the strikeouts. People [music]
- 13:18remember the home runs.
- 13:22Fall forward.
- 13:24Thomas Edison conducted 1,000 failed
- 13:27experiments. Did you know that? I didn't
- 13:28know that.
- 13:30Because the 1,001st
- 13:32was the light bulb.
- 13:35Fall forward.
- 13:39Fail big.
- 13:41Today is the beginning of the rest of
- 13:42your life and it can be it's going to be
- 13:44very frightening. It it's a new world
- 13:46out there, it's a mean world out there
- 13:47and
- 13:48you only live once.
- 13:50So do what you feel passionate about.
- 13:53Take chances
- 13:55professionally. Don't be afraid to go
- 13:58outside the box.
- 14:00Don't be afraid [music] to
- 14:02think outside the box. Don't be afraid
- 14:05to fail big, to dream
- 14:08big, but remember
- 14:11dreams
- 14:13without goals
- 14:16are just dreams
- 14:18and they ultimately fuel disappointment.
- 14:23So have dreams
- 14:26but have goals.
- 14:28Life goals, yearly goals, monthly goals,
- 14:31daily goals. I try to give myself a goal
- 14:34every day.
- 14:37Sometimes it's
- 14:38just to not curse somebody out.
- 14:41Simple goals, but have goals.
- 14:45And understand
- 14:48that to achieve these goals, you must
- 14:50apply discipline
- 14:53and consistency.
- 14:56In order to achieve your goals, you must
- 14:58apply discipline, which you've already
- 15:00done, and consistency. Every [music]
- 15:03day, not just on Tuesday and just a few
- 15:05days. You have to work at it.
- 15:08Hard work
- 15:11works.
- 15:13You'll never see a U-Haul behind a
- 15:16hearse. I don't care how much money you
- 15:18make, you can't take it with you.
- 15:21The Egyptians tried it.
- 15:24They got robbed. That's all they got.
- 15:27>> [music]
- 15:28>> You can't take it with you.
- 15:30And it's not how much you have.
- 15:34It's what you do
- 15:36with what you have.
- 15:37We all have different talents. Some of
- 15:39you will be doctors, some lawyers, some
- 15:41scientists, some educators, some nurses,
- 15:43some preachers. [music]
- 15:47The most selfish thing you can do in
- 15:49this world
- 15:51is help someone else.
- 15:53Why is it selfish? Because the
- 15:54gratification, [music] the goodness that
- 15:56comes to you, the good feeling, the good
- 15:58feeling that I get from helping others,
- 16:01nothing's better than that. Well, one or
- 16:03two things, [music] but
- 16:04nothing's better than that. Not not
- 16:06jewelry, not big house I have, not the
- 16:09cars, but the the
- 16:11It's the joy. That's where the joy is in
- 16:13helping others. That's where the success
- 16:15is.
- 16:19And anything you want
- 16:21good,
- 16:22you can have.
- 16:25So, claim it.
- 16:27Work hard to get it.
- 16:29When you get it, reach back. Pull
- 16:31someone else up.
- 16:34Each one teach one.
- 16:38Remember, just because you're doing a
- 16:41lot more
- 16:44doesn't mean you're getting a lot more
- 16:46done.
- 16:48Remember that. Just because you're doing
- 16:49a lot more
- 16:52doesn't mean you're getting a lot more
- 16:55done.
- 16:57Don't confuse
- 16:59movement
- 17:02with progress.
- 17:04My mother told me, she said, "Yeah, cuz
- 17:05you can run in place all the time and
- 17:07never get anywhere."
- 17:09So, continue to strive, continue to have
- 17:10goals, continue to progress.
- 17:17Without commitment,
- 17:19>> [applause]
- 17:19>> you'll never start, but more
- 17:21importantly, without consistency,
- 17:25you'll never finish.
- 17:27It's not easy.
- 17:29If it was easy, there'd be no Kerry
- 17:30Washington. If it was easy, there'd be
- 17:33no Taraji P. Henson.
- 17:35P. Henson.
- 17:38If it were easy, there'd be no Octavia
- 17:40Spencer, but not only that, if it were
- 17:42easy, there'd be no Viola Davis.
- 17:45If it were easy, there'd be no Michael
- 17:47T. Williamson, no Stephen McKinley
- 17:49Henderson, no
- 17:51Russell Hornsby. If it were easy,
- 17:53there'd be no Denzel Washington. So,
- 17:56keep working,
- 17:58keep striving, never give up, fall down
- 18:00seven times, get up eight.
- 18:05Ease
- 18:08is a greater threat
- 18:10to progress
- 18:12than hardship.
- 18:15>> [applause]
- 18:16>> Ease is a greater threat to progress
- 18:18than hardship. So,
- 18:20>> [applause]
- 18:20>> keep moving, keep growing, keep
- 18:22learning.
- 18:23See you at work.
- 18:24You'll never see a U-Haul
- 18:27behind a hearse.
- 18:29I'll say it again. You'll never see a
- 18:31U-Haul behind a hearse. Now, I've been
- 18:33blessed to make hundreds of millions of
- 18:35dollars in my life. [music]
- 18:37I can't take it with me.
- 18:39And neither can you. So, it's not how
- 18:42much you have,
- 18:44it's what you do
- 18:46>> [music]
- 18:46>> with what you have. And we all have
- 18:48different gifts. Some money, some love,
- 18:51some patience, some the ability to touch
- 18:55people,
- 18:56but we all have it.
- 18:58Use it. Share it.
- 19:01That's what counts.
- 19:03Not what you're driving, not what you're
- 19:04flying in, not what kind of house you
- 19:06bought your mama.
- 19:07>> The thing about self-discipline is that
- 19:09it is necessary for everything you do in
- 19:13your life. [music] You have to be
- 19:15self-disciplined. If discipline comes
- 19:17from somewhere else,
- 19:19uh it's very, very hard to remain
- 19:21consistent [music] because you tend to
- 19:22resist. It's wild because I see trainers
- 19:26and they're in the gym with people and,
- 19:28you know, the guy or girl that they're
- 19:31working out hates their workout. Hates
- 19:34it because the discipline is coming from
- 19:36somewhere else. You It's something that
- 19:38you dread every time you go in. You
- 19:41don't really want to do it. It's like,
- 19:43"Uh but oh no, my trainer's here. He's
- 19:45about to, you know, beat me up [music]
- 19:47and make me feel crazy." Well, the truth
- 19:50is every trainer
- 19:52should work his way out of your life.
- 19:55Anybody who's working you out, your
- 19:57teachers, [music]
- 19:57your trainers, your people, they have to
- 20:00train you
- 20:01to get out of your life. So, you can go
- 20:04ahead, do your own workout, do your own
- 20:08thing, practice self-discipline.
- 20:10>> Dreams without goals are just dreams
- 20:14and they ultimately fuel disappointment.
- 20:17Goals on the road to achievement
- 20:21cannot be achieved without discipline
- 20:25and consistency.
- 20:27I pray that you all put your shoes way
- 20:30under the bed at night so that you got
- 20:32to get on your knees IN THE MORNING.
- 20:36ANYTHING YOU WANT,
- 20:38GOOD,
- 20:40you can have.
- 20:42>> [music]
- 20:43>> So, claim it.
- 20:44Work hard to get it.
- 20:47When you get it, reach back. Pull
- 20:49someone else up.
- 20:51Each one,
- 20:53teach one.
- 20:55Don't just aspire to make a living.
- 21:01Aspire to make a difference.
- 21:06>> You don't have to compromise yourself.
- 21:08You know, if there's something you don't
- 21:10feel good about, then don't do it. The
- 21:11most important choices I've made
- 21:14was to say no. And I said no many a time
- 21:18to to films that I just didn't
- 21:20especially early on
- 21:22that just didn't feel comfortable with.
- 21:24They
- 21:25They There was one script that was
- 21:26brought to me. I call it The They
- 21:28Couldn't Kill.
- 21:31Cuz they
- 21:32were like
- 21:33he was accused of raping his wife
- 21:36in the '40s and they were they tried to
- 21:38hang him, but he didn't die.
- 21:41>> [laughter]
- 21:42>> And they tried to electrocute him.
- 21:44They were like, "It's a comedy." I'm
- 21:45like, "It don't look funny to me."
- 21:49So, I actually called Sidney Poitier,
- 21:52who I was fortunate at that time to and
- 21:54still to be able to call. And I said,
- 21:57you know, this movie make I'm set. And
- 22:00they offered me $600,000
- 22:03to play The They Couldn't Kill.
- 22:06Ah, that's what I called him.
- 22:09And
- 22:10he said to me, and I'll say this to you,
- 22:13he said the first two or three or four
- 22:16films you make in this industry, Denzel,
- 22:18will determine how you proceed.
- 22:20He said, "I'm not going to tell you what
- 22:22to do,
- 22:23but remember that the first three or
- 22:25four or five films you make will
- 22:26determine how you proceed."
- 22:28I turned it down. I turned the money
- 22:30down. I needed the money.
- 22:32I turned it down. Six months later, I
- 22:34got Cry Freedom.
- 22:37That and that
- 22:38>> [applause]
- 22:39>> So, stick to your guns. If you If you If
- 22:42you don't feel like you should do it,
- 22:44then don't do it. Cuz you don't want to
- 22:46be
- 22:47you know, you don't want to be a
- 22:49negative energy on the set. That's how I
- 22:51feel. So, I'm like, you know, I ain't
- 22:52doing this cuz I'm going to slap
- 22:53somebody on the second day.
- 22:55>> [laughter]
- 22:56>> So, I just, you know,
- 22:57it's it's something I think the most
- 22:59important decisions you can make as an
- 23:01actor actress
- 23:02is saying no. Is saying no, you don't
- 23:05have to take your clothes off if you
- 23:08don't want to.
- 23:09>> [applause]
- 23:10>> The one thing I'm the most happy about
- 23:11[music] in terms of my career is the
- 23:13fact that I got there
- 23:16by the grace of God, first [music] of
- 23:17all, but short of that, I got there just
- 23:20by working hard, not partying with
- 23:22[music] the right people, not
- 23:24compromising myself in any way or
- 23:26cutting any kind of deals, just by
- 23:28working hard, just by [music] plugging
- 23:30away along, sawing wood as I like to
- 23:32call it.
- 23:34I'm a 20-year overnight sensation.
- 23:38I don't get life mixed up with making a
- 23:39living. I was there [music] for all four
- 23:41of my children being born. When When the
- 23:43first one was born, I recognized the
- 23:44difference between life
- 23:47and making a living. They're life, you
- 23:48know, our family's life, you know,
- 23:50acting is making a living.
- 23:53>> What do you think the biggest difference
- 23:54between [music] doing a play and doing I
- 23:56mean, it's a cliché question, but I'd be
- 23:57interested to know your answer.
- 23:59>> I think a part of what Viola just said
- 24:00is that [music] you get to dig deeper
- 24:01and you get another day. And you get the
- 24:03energy.
- 24:04>> Mhm.
- 24:05>> You do a movie and it's 200 people that
- 24:07are used to it and they don't care and
- 24:08you Everybody's doing their job and it
- 24:10comes in a theater somewhere and you you
- 24:12know, you're picking your nose at home
- 24:13somewhere,
- 24:14clipping your nails. There's no energy.
- 24:16>> Right.
- 24:16>> Uh when I was on on Broadway 5 years ago
- 24:19with Julius Caesar, I made a decision to
- 24:21sign autographs every night. I don't
- 24:22know what I did. Oh yeah, that ain't
- 24:24happening THIS TIME. NO.
- 24:25>> [laughter]
- 24:28>> ONLY AS I RUB MY KNEES, ONLY because my
- 24:31knees are bad. It's hard for me to
- 24:32stand. But
- 24:33>> And why did you decide to do that?
- 24:35>> Well, you know, I wanted to say thank
- 24:36you.
- 24:37>> Uh-huh.
- 24:37>> It was my way of saying thank you. And
- 24:40the first night it it was like 5,000
- 24:42people out there. I said, "Okay, wait a
- 24:43minute. Everybody who has playbills from
- 24:45our show."
- 24:46>> So
- 24:47>> [laughter]
- 24:47>> Yeah, cuz it was like people were just
- 24:49wandering up the block. I was like,
- 24:51"WAIT A MINUTE. I FORGOT I'M ON, you
- 24:52know, 42nd Street, Times Square."
- 24:54>> [laughter]
- 24:55>> I was like, "Wait a minute." But
- 24:56honestly
- 24:57>> You were
- 24:58>> for weeks.
- 24:58>> The energy and I was out there hour and
- 25:00a half every night, every show. But, the
- 25:02energy you got back, the stories, the
- 25:04five little old ladies who who just
- 25:06drove in from Detroit. [music]
- 25:08And I'm like, "Well, what y'all doing
- 25:09tonight?" They said, "We're getting back
- 25:10in the car, baby. We got to go back
- 25:11tonight."
- 25:12And you know, a little 84-year-old lady
- 25:14who was like, "Baby, if I was 3 YEARS
- 25:16YOUNGER
- 25:19>> [applause]
- 25:21>> OH, TRUE STORY.
- 25:23THEN WE HAD WE WE HAD
- 25:25and and and and and I say this also
- 25:28because I hope it happens with this
- 25:29play. We had some high schools come. We
- 25:32had one school from somewhere, I forgot
- 25:34where,
- 25:34>> [music]
- 25:34>> and they were doing Julius Caesar and
- 25:36then some young kid was like, "Well, you
- 25:37know, my Brutus is a bit different.
- 25:39>> [laughter]
- 25:41>> He's more the classic stoic and
- 25:43Well, it was great to engage and
- 25:46and and exchange with these young people
- 25:48[music] with There was a There was an
- 25:49energy. I got more from it than I gave
- 25:52to to the people that I signed for.
- 25:54That's, you know,
- 25:55You don't get that
- 25:58You know, the odd thing about success
- 25:59[music] in film is is the budgets get
- 26:01bigger, you make more money, but they
- 26:02become more formulaic. So, you don't get
- 26:05the opportunity. [music] So, I, God
- 26:07willing, if I stay around long enough,
- 26:09this is what I'm going to be doing.
- 26:13You know, you're always affected by
- 26:14opinion, but the
- 26:16the more opinions there are of you the
- 26:20me, the more I
- 26:23the less I look at them because [music]
- 26:24I just can't live my life based upon
- 26:26what other people think about me. So, I
- 26:28can't concern myself too much with what
- 26:30other [music] people think, you know,
- 26:31it's just not healthy.
- 26:32I I don't think I'll I could continue to
- 26:35do what I do if I was constantly
- 26:36worrying about what somebody thought
- 26:38about it.
- 26:38>> [music]
- 26:55[music]
- 26:56>> Mhm.
