- 0:00Hey, it's me, Michael. And if you're an
- 0:02engineer, you're a draftsman, you're a
- 0:04CAD person, I want you to know that you
- 0:06are sitting exactly right now where
- 0:08computer programmers were 2 years ago.
- 0:11And Claude,
- 0:14Gemini,
- 0:15and OpenAI are coming for your jobs
- 0:19next.
- 0:20>> [music]
- 0:22>> And I say this seriously, not clickbait,
- 0:25as a mechanical engineer. It started for
- 0:27me with this flashlight from Olight.
- 0:30And I frequently test laser scanners
- 0:33that allow you to create a point cloud
- 0:36and reverse engineer objects like this.
- 0:39And I had done such a thing with
- 0:42Creality's CR Scan program and created a
- 0:45point cloud for this flashlight. But can
- 0:47you see here how there are sections of
- 0:50it where it's not quite joined together?
- 0:53There's broken places where I couldn't
- 0:55get the scanner in there. And then
- 0:57there's places where there's spaces
- 0:59right in between there where it just
- 1:01fills it in. It's kind of ugly. You can
- 1:04sort of see where the on-off switch is.
- 1:07You can sort of see that there's a bezel
- 1:09there where the light shines through.
- 1:11And that actually came out nice, that
- 1:14on-off switch. But the point is, to get
- 1:17from that scan
- 1:19to an editable solid to make meaningful
- 1:22things like cases and covers and handles
- 1:26and clips,
- 1:27there are a number of steps in between
- 1:30that required you to create construction
- 1:32planes and slices and
- 1:36I had to watch dozens and dozens of
- 1:38hours of YouTube to learn these reverse
- 1:41engineering techniques, and I'm not very
- 1:42good at it. All I know is I wanted to
- 1:45get a clean version of that flashlight.
- 1:48I imported that scan into ChatGPT, and
- 1:52it healed the model at first.
- 1:54It's watertight now. There's no rough
- 1:57edges. There's no broken surfaces. If
- 1:59you drilled a little hole in this model
- 2:01and poured water into it, nothing would
- 2:03leak out. Then I said, "Hey,
- 2:06I want you to create a clean version of
- 2:10this." And so, here's what's on my
- 2:12screen right now. Rebuilt as one
- 2:15verified solid with 119 CAD faces
- 2:19replacing roughly 234,000
- 2:22scan triangles, includes flat planes,
- 2:25rounded edges, recessed bezel, side
- 2:27control and simplified
- 2:30simplified words are hard clip geometry.
- 2:34Open it directly in Fusion 360 as an
- 2:36editable solid. And I want you to see
- 2:39there's the thing that it said I was
- 2:41going to see if I opened it in Fusion.
- 2:43And I want you to know that when I
- 2:45opened it in Fusion, it blew my freaky
- 2:49freak mind.
- 2:51Because there
- 2:53was a clean designed solid that matched
- 2:57the scan that I had made. And I thought,
- 3:00"This isn't what ChatGPT is supposed to
- 3:02do."
- 3:03In the demo video for Astra, you could
- 3:06make a rocket, a simple rocket, and then
- 3:08make a simple STL file, which is the
- 3:11file 3D printers use, and you could
- 3:13print your rocket, and it was a cute
- 3:15little rocket. This was a quarter
- 3:17million triangles from a scan I had
- 3:20imported on my desk. And the net result
- 3:23was something that I could now build
- 3:26with CAD. And you can see all these
- 3:28individual facets and faces are here,
- 3:32and the fillets are here, and they're
- 3:34pretty much close to exactly what that
- 3:36flashlight was.
- 3:38Then I had another idea.
- 3:40I said, "What if I can bypass CAD
- 3:42altogether?
- 3:43What if I don't want to bring it into
- 3:45Fusion 360?" And so,
- 3:47I had a cargo net clip that had broke.
- 3:51And you'll see here if I zoom in,
- 3:54there's a place right where my index
- 3:55finger is
- 3:57where it had cracked. And I thought, "I
- 3:59want to make another one of these,
- 4:01but I don't want to use Fusion 360 to do
- 4:06it. What if I just took photographs of
- 4:08this?
- 4:09And maybe use my micrometer
- 4:12to measure a couple edges and tell Chat
- 4:15GPT
- 4:17that I wanted to make a new version of
- 4:19this.
- 4:20Could it do it?
- 4:21And
- 4:23I kind of had a sick feeling in my
- 4:26stomach
- 4:27as I started to go through with the
- 4:29prompts. I want you to make me an STL
- 4:31file that mimics the photos I've shown
- 4:33you as close as you possibly can. It's a
- 4:36broken piece I glued back together.
- 4:39I've dimensioned a few of the places. I
- 4:41need an STL file I can print on a resin
- 4:43printer as best you can approximate it.
- 4:46And you'll see here that there are
- 4:48some photos that I've uploaded and
- 4:51they're not particularly
- 4:53dimensioned. And I took a few things
- 4:56like the thickness and the width and I
- 4:58thought, this is where it's going to
- 4:59break down.
- 5:01But then I remembered things are
- 5:03changing. Chat GPT remembers projects
- 5:06that I've done. It has a memory.
- 5:08There's a database of things. It's
- 5:10gotten really smart really quickly.
- 5:14And then
- 5:15the program came back. It took it 5
- 5:18minutes and 44 seconds
- 5:21and it said, here's what I've got. Let's
- 5:23do a fit test. And it brought in that
- 5:27file.
- 5:28Now, look.
- 5:30Where the glue was,
- 5:32it created
- 5:33the crack. And then I had this piece on
- 5:36the 3D printer.
- 5:39>> [laughter]
- 5:40>> Now, I'm going to put this down and
- 5:42we'll show you the iterations of this on
- 5:45these parts.
- 5:47The very first version of it,
- 5:49here's the original
- 5:51and here's the first whack
- 5:53with the prompts that I had given it.
- 5:56And I want you to see side by side,
- 5:59boy, that's pretty close considering all
- 6:02I did was upload a photo.
- 6:05And I knew that we were onto something,
- 6:08but more importantly, I knew something
- 6:09scary was happening.
- 6:12And so, I said, "Hey,
- 6:14there's a place where you have an
- 6:15irregular edge where I glued the piece.
- 6:18I want this to be clean where the net
- 6:21pops in. There are smooth faces. I have
- 6:23a yellow circle here to show you on my
- 6:27picture where things have gone wrong.
- 6:29And all I did was sketch up on a picture
- 6:32and say, 'That's supposed to be a
- 6:33radius,
- 6:35and those lines are supposed to be flat
- 6:37faces.
- 6:38This is not hard.' I said, "Look, that's
- 6:41what you had. You got to get rid of
- 6:42that, and I want this.
- 6:44I'm not in Fusion, remember? I'm not in
- 6:47Fusion 360."
- 6:49And then it said, "Oh,
- 6:51you mean something like this?"
- 6:54>> [laughter]
- 6:57>> And then we had the third version.
- 7:00Remember, I'm in for this about 20
- 7:03minutes right now.
- 7:04And I'm making this part so this guy
- 7:08out of the picture,
- 7:09and now look how we're getting closer.
- 7:12And so now I have the curve. It's nice
- 7:16and smooth.
- 7:18And this was a very quick 3D print, but
- 7:22if I lay them on top of each other,
- 7:24you'll notice that it's almost one to
- 7:26one.
- 7:28I have not used Fusion 360 at this
- 7:31point. No engineering skills. This is
- 7:34something anyone could have prompted and
- 7:36typed in.
- 7:38And then I said, "Listen,
- 7:40we're almost there. And hey, the
- 7:43original piece is 60.6 mm tall by 51 mm
- 7:48wide. The current design is bigger.
- 7:51Here's a side-by-side, and I printed out
- 7:542 mm
- 7:56grid paper.
- 7:58And you know what it was able to do?
- 8:00Recognize the 2 mm squares,
- 8:04and then it was also able to compare
- 8:06what I had to the original.
- 8:09And it was starting to tabulate the
- 8:11splines of these curves and the radiuses
- 8:14of these things. And it said, "Hey, I'm
- 8:17doing it.
- 8:18Uh
- 8:19thank you very much.
- 8:21I also forgot to tell you
- 8:23before you execute the last command,
- 8:25look at how the original doesn't taper
- 8:27at the lower hook. This piece, if you
- 8:31see here,
- 8:32it's flat and it's the same width.
- 8:35But the original piece
- 8:37is tapered. And I said, "I want you to
- 8:40to do that." And I gave it a
- 8:41measurement.
- 8:42And then it came back
- 8:45and it said, "Hey, here's the original
- 8:48and here's what I made." And then I
- 8:50printed it on the resin printer.
- 8:52Remember, we're a half an hour in. I
- 8:54haven't used CAD. I've measured a few
- 8:56things with a micrometer. So,
- 8:59we went from the original to a very
- 9:02quick draft to something with more
- 9:07in-line dimensions that was in in line
- 9:09and perfect with it.
- 9:11Now, I have a near identical copy of the
- 9:14part. And if it was black resin, you
- 9:16would think it came in a bag with all
- 9:18the other parts.
- 9:20All of the important dimensions are
- 9:23nearly indiscernible from the original.
- 9:27And as you turn it around, I can make
- 9:29These are sort of the support
- 9:32uh divots from the resin printer that I
- 9:34can sand away or I can support it
- 9:36better. But guys,
- 9:40when I put them on top of each other,
- 9:42for all intents and purposes, this is
- 9:45the same piece and I didn't use CAD to
- 9:47do it.
- 9:49I started with a flashlight.
- 9:52And then I said, "Here's a mesh." I put
- 9:54that mesh into Fusion 360. It created an
- 9:58editable solid
- 10:00which told me that it knew how to do
- 10:02CAD.
- 10:04Which meant that if I had a broken part,
- 10:06and this is complex geometry that would
- 10:09have taken a very long time to reverse
- 10:11engineer and measure from the scan, I
- 10:13skipped the scan completely and ended up
- 10:17with a part that is identical
- 10:20to the original.
- 10:22If you have a friend in engineering or
- 10:24you're in engineering, you understand
- 10:26how big of a deal this is because in my
- 10:28next video
- 10:29I'm going to show you how I can design a
- 10:31prompt
- 10:33and bring in a scan
- 10:35and tie chat GPT directly
- 10:39to Fusion 360
- 10:41and build multi-part models that are
- 10:44constrained and move. I could take this
- 10:47scan, I could tell it to make a special
- 10:49holster
- 10:50and give it a rendering from a picture
- 10:52that it drew for me.
- 10:54I can make containers, I can My head is
- 10:57exploding and I don't have to use this
- 11:01program anymore.
- 11:06And if you're still in the engineering
- 11:07world, you should get into this today
- 11:11because if you're not using this and if
- 11:13you're not using these models to send
- 11:15prompts to the programs and
- 11:17understanding the interface
- 11:19you're kind of that green mile dead man
- 11:23walking.
- 11:24I am excited by this. I'm also kind of
- 11:27scared to death
- 11:29because this is a highly specialized
- 11:31industry
- 11:32and to go from a hook
- 11:34to a finished model in 30-40 minutes and
- 11:38print as many of them as I want is
- 11:41putting the entire engineering industry
- 11:43on notice.
- 11:44You've been warned.
- 11:46Hey, it's me, Michael. Don't forget to
- 11:48subscribe and follow. When I do this
- 11:50next project, you're going to really
- 11:52want to see what the outcome is
- 11:54considering the army of 3D printers I
- 11:56have in there, the accuracy of the
- 11:58scanners I have behind me, and the
- 12:00project that I want to complete which is
- 12:02going to blow your mind. Take care,
- 12:04guys, and thanks again.
