I Didn't Think We'd Have to Do This Twice. — Transcript

- 0:00Nothing quite wakes you up like a little
- 0:01exercise to start the work day. I'm here
- 0:04up at the Pioneer dealer's place before
- 0:06Wes is even here this morning. I have
- 0:08got to plant the Mattoon FFA plot for
- 0:11the first time. I forgot about that to
- 0:13be honest. And while I'm up here, I've
- 0:14got a field that has some low spots that
- 0:17drowned out. I'm going to replant them
- 0:18with a Pioneer 28Z30
- 0:22endless soybean. Originally, it was a
- 0:2431. When we replant, we always like to
- 0:26come in with a shorter maturity bean.
- 0:28So, hopefully at harvest, they're all
- 0:30ready at the same time or close enough
- 0:32that you can blend them together. It's
- 0:34on track to be a gorgeous day here. I've
- 0:36got to do some planting first thing, and
- 0:38then I got to hop in the sprayer and get
- 0:40a bunch of post corn sprayed. Not much
- 0:42wind, so it should be stress-free,
- 0:45right? Every day on the farm is
- 0:46stress-free. All jokes aside, it's
- 0:49really not that bad most days. Six bags
- 0:51haphazardly stacked on the back before a
- 0:5310-mi drive.
- 0:55Let's see if they make it to town. I am
- 0:57headed
- 0:58into the trees over there, south of
- 1:00Mattoon, inside of city limits. I've
- 1:03been planting this for the Mattoon FFA
- 1:05of corn and beans in rotation for
- 1:084 or 5 years now. It certainly doesn't
- 1:11help that the old DB60 is a mailbox
- 1:13reaper. The back of the planter's a foot
- 1:16and a half or 2 ft wider than the
- 1:19tractor itself. So, you got to be really
- 1:20careful estimating as you go around
- 1:23objects.
- 1:26Someone's farming.
- 1:31I plan to zip this out and get out of
- 1:33here before Canadian National shows up
- 1:35and starts asking questions.
- 1:38The 7-acre patch we're on used to be
- 1:41T-ball and baseball fields. [music] The
- 1:43city has long since built a complex on
- 1:47the northeastern side of town. When the
- 1:48opportunity came up for the original
- 1:52group that restarted the Mattoon FFA
- 1:54chapter about 20 years ago, 15 years
- 1:57ago, to have this field for projects.
- 1:59They came out, cleaned it up, made it
- 2:02farmable, so they had something that
- 2:04resembled an agriculture field to kind
- 2:07of keep that in the family, the
- 2:08bloodline of the FFA. The modern FFA
- 2:12isn't all about just growing corn,
- 2:14soybeans, and cows. It's about
- 2:15everything involved in agriculture, from
- 2:19growing crops to livestock to anything
- 2:22you can imagine, working any of the
- 2:24industries, food service, food
- 2:26production, all encompassing because
- 2:29there's way more to this than just
- 2:32planting and harvesting crops. If you
- 2:35look at the workforce, the farmers are a
- 2:37diminishing portion of the equation. We
- 2:40still produce the massive quantity of
- 2:42feedstock, yet the workforce is mostly
- 2:45concentrated in the secondary refining
- 2:48roles, although a large chunk are still
- 2:50directly involved with production
- 2:51agriculture. All of the inputs and labor
- 2:54are donated. This year, Brus and West,
- 2:56our Pioneer dealers, are donating
- 2:583706E's,
- 3:00what I happen to have in the planner
- 3:01from last night's field. South Central
- 3:04FS donates all the spraying, the
- 3:07fertilizer, and Greg and Skyler Rhodes
- 3:09do a lot of the tillage like this, and
- 3:11they also do the harvesting. My dreams
- 3:14are crushed. There wasn't a single train
- 3:17went through while I was here in this
- 3:19whole 15 minutes.
- 3:23There's a sleeping locomotive.
- 3:31Unless we get hired to do some custom
- 3:32work, which is unlikely, we are now done
- 3:35planting the first time.
- 3:36Got these beans on the back, so I've got
- 3:39to pull in and start replanting. I've
- 3:41got to take a phone call, too. I'll show
- 3:43you kind of what I'm doing out here.
- 3:46It generates an auto path line, but I
- 3:47don't have auto path activations. I
- 3:49snaked around to some of these low
- 3:51spots. Around here is just the corn
- 3:54stalks. So, in the bottom, there's a
- 3:56decent stand of beans. They're a little
- 3:57bit behind from the water damage, yet
- 3:59they're all there. The outside had a
- 4:01ring of corn stalks, so I just went
- 4:02right through them. Here is the hard
- 4:04part about replanting beans. If I took a
- 4:06stand count, there's probably adequate
- 4:08beans there. I'm in a tractor going
- 4:11sideways, they all start to look thin.
- 4:13Well, I'm out here with the planter and
- 4:14I just topped off with those 28s. 37s
- 4:17are out of the tank mostly. Might as
- 4:19well stop some in.
- 4:22I dropped 70 to 100,000 in the areas
- 4:25where I have to cross through that look
- 4:27all right. If I'm going sideways, you
- 4:29really won't kill more than 10 to 20%.
- 4:32If there's no beans, I'm dropping 160
- 4:34plus.
- 4:36Soybeans don't like a foreign drain.
- 4:40Some of these small ones will probably
- 4:42survive. They're going to be behind, and
- 4:43I got to go through here to get to a far
- 4:45corner anyways.
- 4:47This was a tough one.
- 4:49Just replanted
- 4:5018 acres out of a 68 acre field. How do
- 4:55I do that?
- 4:58See the map.
- 4:59Where does the water go?
- 5:01You tell me.
- 5:04These three are inlets. So, there's an
- 5:05inlet here, inlet here,
- 5:08inlet here. The rest is all natural flow
- 5:11to a drainage area down here. It's just
- 5:13not enough grade, the water sits. A
- 5:16ditcher would do some good there and a
- 5:18lot of tile. All comes off the neighbor
- 5:20to the north. Nothing against the guy,
- 5:22he's just got a ton of fall out there.
- 5:25The property line is right here. I'm
- 5:27right here on the north property line.
- 5:28You can see where all the water sat on
- 5:31him
- 5:32as it was trying to make its way to this
- 5:33shared inlet.
- 5:35A lot of fall. I think that's 120
- 5:37acres. Most of it comes here to the
- 5:39south through our 70. So, just hard to
- 5:42drain it all economically. It's
- 5:45possible, just expensive.
- 5:53Time to spray
- 5:55in the best weather we've had to apply
- 5:57chemicals in weeks.
- 6:00Helena's custom side dressing for us
- 6:02right now, so I'm going to skip this
- 6:03field and meet them on the back end
- 6:05somewhere. If I was going to get into
- 6:07the side dressing, I would most likely
- 6:09explore some kind of tool bar for the
- 6:13Hagie so I could run a little bit later
- 6:15in the season and not feel pressed for
- 6:16time like we do right now.
- 6:20I love spraying, especially corn on a
- 6:23pretty calm day. Auto Path makes it
- 6:25about as easy as it could possibly be. I
- 6:27don't even have to guess anymore.
- 6:29Everything's already calculated. I
- 6:31believe this was planted the 13th or the
- 6:3314th of April. It was in that first hard
- 6:35push of planting.
- 6:36Anything put in the ground that week
- 6:38looks impeccable.
- 6:40Everything planted right ahead of that
- 6:42big rain or a lot of it looks [music]
- 6:44questionable even still. I think the
- 6:46replanting discussion is still ongoing.
- 6:48No one's really sure what's going to
- 6:50happen because the low spots still
- 6:52haven't decided if they're going to come
- 6:53up or not.
- 6:56This corn doesn't look as good sideways
- 6:57on the light nerd as it actually is.
- 6:59It's got a great stand.
- 7:01There you go. The dirt looks a little
- 7:02better. The corn's a little greener.
- 7:04More contrast on the crop.
- 7:07Ah, the train we were looking for.
- 7:09Go figure. You see it when you're
- 7:10spraying the railroad farm.
- 7:16The tile repair guy's going to have to
- 7:18warranty this job. Still plugged here
- 7:21and then I've got a hole in that inlet
- 7:23bottom.
- 7:25That'll be my only repair job of the 30
- 7:27projects I dealt with last fall.
- 7:31Auto Path is also good to get a glimpse
- 7:33inside the mind of the planner operator
- 7:35if you even ever want to be there. This
- 7:37is an ornery little farm. Looks like the
- 7:41operator in this field turned their
- 7:42section control off and forgot to turn
- 7:44it back on. Those are all overlaps
- 7:46through the end.
- 7:47It's a bad field to not have your
- 7:49section control on. Really not that big
- 7:51of a deal. They did used to farm without
- 7:54it.
- 7:55That had it on.
- 7:57That had it on. I'm guessing
- 7:59somewhere around the oil wells or the
- 8:01lane he flipped it off for some reason
- 8:03and forgot to turn it back on. It
- 8:05happens. I told my wife I'd be home by
- 8:086:00 and it is 3:05. So, we're going to
- 8:10be cutting it close.
- 8:13Here's the difference the spring burned
- 8:15out made. I had a little extra 240 and
- 8:17Roundup, so I went around this till I
- 8:19ran out. You can see my 120-ft pass
- 8:22lines that perfectly went with the
- 8:23120-ft end rows and then the field
- 8:26cultivators worked it all. Even after
- 8:28being worked, a lot of that grass
- 8:31survived and whatever winter annuals out
- 8:33there. It makes a difference.
- 8:35Imagine if we sprayed in the fall and
- 8:37didn't have anything.
- 8:39Something to think about.
- 8:41Should I call Ali and tell her 7:00 is
- 8:43looking more realistic? I've got 300
- 8:46acres left.
- 8:47I've got the slowest fields out of the
- 8:49way. A lot of chopped up fields I got to
- 8:51fold up to get through spots. This one
- 8:53right here is a square 80, rectangular
- 8:5580.
- 8:56It's pretty fast.
- 8:59Jeff will have to go get another load of
- 9:00chemical and I don't know how long
- 9:02that'll take because Helena is probably
- 9:05swamped at the load bay. It's calm.
- 9:07Everyone's spraying. They've got side
- 9:08dress bars running all over including
- 9:11customers who are side dressing their
- 9:13own.
- 9:14Long waits.
- 9:16Can you spot the area with the drainage
- 9:18problem here?
- 9:21Usually they have an indicator like an
- 9:23inlet.
- 9:24They'll have to replant.
- 9:26Two acres in here. It's going to be
- 9:27annoying.
- 9:30With how much rain we had and water out
- 9:31here, it could have been much, much
- 9:33worse.
- 9:34I I off the big tanker's empty. I need
- 9:37to get it all the way drawn down so I
- 9:39know exactly what I should pick up so
- 9:41there's not a lot of extra, assuming my
- 9:43sight tube is accurate. That's always a
- 9:46big question mark. I did order the
- 9:49Simmons Innovation AccuVolume system.
- 9:51I've talked about it. So many of you
- 9:53said in the last video to buy it that I
- 9:56just went ahead and did it. Anytime I
- 9:57mention it, there's a positive comment
- 10:00down below the video. So definitely
- 10:01leave a comment if you've got any
- 10:02feedback. It may have actually just
- 10:04arrived today. I'm not going to get it
- 10:06installed. Perhaps tomorrow when it
- 10:08rains.
- 10:09He's picking up another 213
- 10:12acres.
- 10:13And that'll finish us off for now. I've
- 10:15got more to spray. I just don't have it
- 10:18ready or I've got too much to replant in
- 10:19the field. I only need 60 gallons to
- 10:23finish and based on where I think the
- 10:24sight tube was when I refilled, I've got
- 10:27100 gallons in the tank.
- 10:30Might be too high, might be too low,
- 10:31could be perfect.
- 10:33Knowing my luck with getting getting
- 10:35this, I
- 10:36probably won't even going to run out.
- 10:40I'm not above running the rinse tank
- 10:41through to finish.
- 10:45Come on.
- 10:46We're almost to the end.
- 10:50OH.
- 10:52NO.
- 10:54WHAT A cruel world.
- 10:58Rinse tank it is.
- 11:01The old sight tube let me down again. I
- 11:03was 40 gallons too high. I thought I was
- 11:07at 650 and it was at 610.
- 11:10Good thing we got that package at home.
- 11:12Hunter from Helena's been running this
- 11:14bar on us. I'm hoping he's got a lot
- 11:16done and runs late tonight because it's
- 11:18supposed to rain in the morning and
- 11:20after that rain, it's going to rain some
- 11:22more and then it's possibly going to
- 11:23rain even more. I'd like to get as much
- 11:26side dressed early while the corn is
- 11:28small. After a week of nice showers and
- 11:3180 plus degree temperatures, this corn
- 11:33will be bigger. When you run it over,
- 11:35less of it will come back.
- 11:37You're always going to crack a few eggs
- 11:38to make an omelet, and you're going to
- 11:39run corn over. I learned that in the
- 11:41sprayer.
- 11:42How much of it comes back? That's always
- 11:45the question mark.
- 11:49Yeah, that's Hunter.
- 11:51Speaking of side dressing, even if I
- 11:53wanted to do it, I couldn't because I'm
- 11:54spraying.
- 11:55Dad doesn't want to run a side dress
- 11:57bar. He'd rather pay someone to do it.
- 12:00Another level of complexity to making
- 12:01that decision.
- 12:05Out our left window, we have the March
- 12:07planted 40Z57s.
- 12:09Now, I'm not done.
- 12:11Jeff just went up to get the load of
- 12:13chemical to finish out the last 200
- 12:15acres.
- 12:16He may be another 20 or 30 minutes,
- 12:18perhaps an hour. They've got a lot of
- 12:20people running, so sometimes they're
- 12:22slow, even though they have two bays.
- 12:24Part of doing business.
- 12:26I get to spray the gauntlet here.
- 12:28Gardens on both sides.
- 12:30Wind is out of the
- 12:34east, and my wife, Ally, doesn't have
- 12:36her garden planted, so that works. I'm
- 12:38going to run a trial out here with a
- 12:40product that I'm super excited about.
- 12:42We'll talk about it as I go get it.
- 12:44Unless you've been living under a rock
- 12:45for the last couple of decades, everyone
- 12:47knows that Corteva is both a seed and a
- 12:50pesticide giant. Through the acquisition
- 12:52of other established and reputable
- 12:54companies, as well as their own in-house
- 12:56developments, Corteva has created what
- 12:59they call Nెక్stEra. That is their
- 13:01biological, nutritional, and plant
- 13:04hormone stimulant product line. As we
- 13:07finish up tonight applying Acuron on
- 13:10some Pioneer 13 777 planted on a
- 13:13beautiful farm right behind home, we're
- 13:16going to be throwing in a side-by-side
- 13:18trial on a large portion of the field of
- 13:20our normal herbicide program, and then
- 13:23our herbicide program plus Nెక్stEra a
- 13:26There's a lot of seemingly complex yet
- 13:28relatively simple ingredients in here
- 13:31formulated for the specific goals stated
- 13:33on the label enhancing the abiotic
- 13:36stress resistance of the listed fruit
- 13:38crops. Unlike many competitors in this
- 13:40marketplace, Corteva with their next to
- 13:43line of products are ensuring quality.
- 13:45They have an EPA registered label here.
- 13:47This is arguably one of the most
- 13:49important parts of the whole equation
- 13:50because there are a lot of snake oils in
- 13:53this specific market sector. Corteva's
- 13:56next to line has spared no expense to
- 13:58formulate the perfect ratio of all of
- 14:01these plant hormones to result in
- 14:04hopefully great abiotic and biotic
- 14:07stress mitigation for your crops. I've
- 14:09got no better way to put it than by
- 14:11stealing a line from my good friend Troy
- 14:13Applegate. He is a multiple time NCGA
- 14:16corn yield champion non-irrigated
- 14:19conventional tillage located about 25
- 14:22miles to the northwest of here. Now,
- 14:24he's not using Next to Stilt products. I
- 14:26think he could get even higher yields if
- 14:28he did. He summarizes the quest for high
- 14:31corn yields by claiming corn should
- 14:33never have a bad day. Part of it not
- 14:36having a bad day is maintaining specific
- 14:39levels within that plant whether it be
- 14:41nutritional, whether it be biological,
- 14:43or in regards to stress. I'm still
- 14:46waiting on Jeff, so I stopped by home to
- 14:48see the wife and kids and saw my package
- 14:51was delivered like 2 days after I
- 14:53ordered it. I figured with these small
- 14:55children it'd be best to get it out of
- 14:56the house because it was fairly
- 14:58expensive. It's not going on today,
- 14:59maybe tomorrow. We may need to give some
- 15:01Next to Stilt to our new chicks here.
- 15:05Hoping to move them in with the big hens
- 15:06in the next couple of weeks.
- 15:08They are five or six weeks old. They've
- 15:12almost overgrown their containment here.
- 15:15There was 15 of them. I was assuming
- 15:17there would be attrition and there was
- 15:19no attrition.
- 15:20Lucky knows that his invisible fence
- 15:22collar's not on.
- 15:24And I'm going to go supervise. What's
- 15:26going on out here?
- 15:29How do you have such a cute face?
- 15:34Can't believe someone abandoned you.
- 15:45I could not have timed that better if I
- 15:47tried.
- 15:48Got my water.
- 15:50Got a soda, little snack in me so we can
- 15:52run for a few more hours. And most
- 15:53importantly, our stilt next to stilt. If
- 15:57I've not made it clear at this point, I
- 15:59am in a financial partnership with
- 16:01Nexsta to promote these products to you.
- 16:03It does go beyond that. It is a
- 16:05curiosity quest on my own. I want to see
- 16:07how these perform. I don't believe in
- 16:09just using things for no reason and not
- 16:12without solid data on our own farm. I
- 16:13would recommend anyone to try new
- 16:15products, especially EPA registered ones
- 16:18that you know the contents are verified.
- 16:21And see if there's an ROI on your own
- 16:23farm. That's what we're about to do. Of
- 16:25course, there's about a 5-month wait
- 16:26after applying it see if there's an ROI.
- 16:30Got to make room for it in my supply
- 16:32cabinet. I had to get the Dawn dish
- 16:33soaps out of the way, the old chisel
- 16:35point, my mixing jug. Perfect.
- 16:39It'll ride there while we load up, spray
- 16:41the outside, and then get the trial set
- 16:43up.
- 16:48We're loaded.
- 16:49Let's ride.
- 16:51And not back into anything. Prefer not
- 16:53to back if I can avoid it.
- 16:57The side dress bar is putting on 70 lb
- 16:59of actual N through 32% UAN. Paid for
- 17:03last summer, thankfully.
- 17:06It's also adding in another
- 17:098 or 9 lb of sulfur with that and a
- 17:11little extra nitrogen, too.
- 17:15We upped our rate of anhydrous this year
- 17:16to compensate for the higher prices. So,
- 17:18we had more on in the fall. We cut down
- 17:20our 32 a little bit. The price spread
- 17:22between the NH3 and the 32% jumped to
- 17:26like 20 plus cents a pound of actual N.
- 17:29It's typically 10 to 11 cents. So, we
- 17:32just put more up front. I'm not sure if
- 17:34that's the best agronomic or
- 17:36environmental decision. It was the best
- 17:38economical decision.
- 17:40Do with that what you will.
- 17:42Stuck between a water treatment plant
- 17:45and a cemetery.
- 17:47I'm sorry. We got to get out and admire
- 17:49something. Look at this.
- 18:03That is our 13 triple 7. I reversed my
- 18:05order. I took the hard fields out first.
- 18:08We're going to finish with the 13 triple
- 18:097. I'm moving over there now. We're
- 18:11going to ring it with our herbicide and
- 18:13then we'll get the trials started with
- 18:14the stilt in the tank so we can see what
- 18:17it does on our farm.
- 18:18Oh my goodness, that looks good.
- 18:22Freshly side dressed. Hunter did a great
- 18:23job here on the ends. Not a lot run
- 18:25over. They're pulling the same auto path
- 18:28files I am. So, they download all of our
- 18:30planner data to help them side dress
- 18:33without running stuff over.
- 18:35If we're going to use it, they may as
- 18:36well use it.
- 18:38Yearly safety reminder for anyone
- 18:39working around power poles, farmers in
- 18:41particular. If you are near a pole,
- 18:44especially with a sprayer, before you
- 18:47get out and touch anything metal, always
- 18:50look up and ensure that you're not
- 18:52making contact with the lines. I don't
- 18:54need to explain what happens if you're
- 18:56touching the lines and then you ground
- 18:58yourself. It's not pretty. I avoid
- 19:00sketchy power lines altogether. Even if
- 19:02I think I'm clear, I get out, I stay on
- 19:05all of the rubber, and I look up and
- 19:07make sure there's plenty of room between
- 19:09me and the wires. A little extra
- 19:10diligence looking like that can make
- 19:12sure you get back to see your loved
- 19:14ones. Really important to stay safe.
- 19:36Those beans are great.
- 19:38I've got some Naxcel products to put on
- 19:39them as well. In due time.
- 19:49The planner was real squiggly again this
- 19:51year.
- 19:54Instead of doing this trial every other
- 19:56pass, I'm going to do more of a block
- 19:57style. So, a couple rounds treated, a
- 20:00couple rounds untreated. With the
- 20:01sprayer, I worry about
- 20:03cross-contamination from any kind of
- 20:05microparticle drift. We're going to
- 20:07eliminate that. Do maybe another two
- 20:10rounds somewhere untreated. This is all
- 20:13untreated still. We'll throw the Naxcel
- 20:16Stilh in here pretty shortly to get some
- 20:19comparables.
- 20:21Okay, I'm going to go ahead and add the
- 20:22treatment now. 700 gallons if I have my
- 20:25sight tube guess correct. And as
- 20:28evidence has shown today, I'm not very
- 20:29good at that. At the V3 to V6 growth
- 20:31stage, Naxcel Stilh is labeled for 4 oz
- 20:35per acre. 600 gallons would be 40 acres.
- 20:38I'm about 7 [snorts] acres 8 acres high.
- 20:417 acres high is right. I'll need to add
- 20:4447 acres worth. Quick math, that is 100
- 20:4888 oz. Am I correct on that? Let's hop
- 20:51out, throw it in really quick, agitate
- 20:54it, and get some data in.
- 20:56Ah, we'll look at the corn one more
- 20:57time. It is beautiful. Great time of day
- 20:59to look at it. It's getting its green
- 21:01right now.
- 21:03It's going to be very receptive of this
- 21:05Stilh. Could be an X factor for an
- 21:07already high yield potential farm.
- 21:10>> Every spring we play a game of roulette
- 21:12with Mother Nature. You check the 10-day
- 21:14forecast, it may look perfect, so you
- 21:17pull the planner out of the shed.
- 21:18Suddenly, the weather app decides it's a
- 21:20great week for a dynamic cocktail of
- 21:22freezing rain and 50 mph winds. We can't
- 21:25control the sky, but we can address how
- 21:27the crop handles the stress that's
- 21:29presented. That's where Corteva's
- 21:31N-Extend comes in. Now, this isn't some
- 21:34miracle cure you spray to rescue a crop
- 21:36that's already half dead and underwater.
- 21:38It's a plant growth regulator blend,
- 21:40often called a PGR, that you apply
- 21:42early, right around that V2 to the V4
- 21:45window. Think of it like sending your
- 21:47plants to the gym before they have to
- 21:49step into the ring. It triggers the
- 21:51plant's natural defenses early, so it
- 21:54doesn't have to play catch-up when
- 21:55things go south on you. Let's face it,
- 21:57there are always four stresses looming
- 21:59at any given time: cold, heat, drought,
- 22:02and wind. N-Extend doesn't magically
- 22:04make it rain or turn off the wind, but
- 22:06it does prime the plant's ability to
- 22:08endure these stressors. It builds up the
- 22:11baseline resilience, so when a late
- 22:13freeze or a July dry spell hits, the
- 22:15crop can take the punch and hopefully
- 22:17keep moving forward. Farming has no
- 22:19shortage of surprises. Being proactive
- 22:22with a PGR like N-Extend just means one
- 22:24less thing to lose sleep over when the
- 22:26local meteorologist changes their mind
- 22:28for the millionth time in one day. Talk
- 22:31to your local Corteva rep to see how it
- 22:32may fit into your mix this season.
- 22:35>> Big measuring cup's been sitting in
- 22:36there for a long time unused. It may
- 22:38have some biologicals of its own with
- 22:40it. There was a bunch of tassel anthers
- 22:42from last fungicide season, if not from
- 22:44two fungicide seasons ago.
- 22:47There's more than just N-Extend in there
- 22:48now, I can assure you that.
- 22:50Bam.
- 22:51Add that.
- 22:53Uh resume. Don't hit new, that'll get
- 22:55rid of all my mapping. There we go. I
- 22:57may even be able to change it
- 22:59to product view.
- 23:04Product.
- 23:05Background, no background, satellite,
- 23:07satellite.
- 23:08Once we start spraying,
- 23:11the Accuron and still should be a
- 23:12different color.
- 23:13Very important to get data, folks, on
- 23:15your own farm. I don't care what kind of
- 23:18promotion you're seeing, what kind of
- 23:19marketing you're seeing. There's no
- 23:21reason to spend money on a product that
- 23:23does not improve your bottom line. I
- 23:25know Jeff's probably over there in the
- 23:27tanker wondering what's taking so long.
- 23:30Science, Jeff, that's what.
- 23:32With the reclaim system, I can
- 23:35recirculate my boom
- 23:37all the way around. It's not in focus.
- 23:39Back to the tank, ensuring the minute it
- 23:42starts spraying, we are getting Accuron
- 23:44and still, not just Accuron still.
- 23:47The data right here may be irrelevant
- 23:48because of this washout we're dealing
- 23:50with. In case you're wondering what
- 23:52heaven may look like,
- 23:54probably similar to this.
- 23:56Rows are likely straighter in heaven
- 23:58than here.
- 24:00It's a beautiful.
- 24:01This 1377 couldn't look any better.
- 24:05Ooh, red.
- 24:07Pink and red tonight.
- 24:09These Gen 5 monitors are slick. I love
- 24:11the way they look.
- 24:14This data should be pretty good.
- 24:17I'm going to have a check strip there.
- 24:18I'm going to come spray off a lot down
- 24:19here.
- 24:21When I'm done, I'll fill in those with
- 24:24just the Accuron only.
- 24:26Wasting a lot of time doing this. That's
- 24:28okay.
- 24:30Quality takes patience.
- 24:32Right, Jeff?
- 24:36Almost out, and then we'll load back up.
- 24:39Do it over again.
- 24:47Go back to Accuron, resume work.
- 24:51Hit okay. Load up one last time. I've
- 24:54got another 70 acres to spray, I think.
- 24:5860 or so.
- 24:59I'll fill in all the strips here and get
- 25:01this
- 25:02buttoned up.
- 25:04Try this again. I think it's about
- 25:051,100. We'll do 1090.
- 25:09I promise you tomorrow, if it rains like
- 25:11it's supposed to, we'll go ahead and
- 25:12install that tank level indicator.
- 25:15The one unique challenge of this field
- 25:18versus all the others is an ornery weed
- 25:20called burr cucumber, and it is
- 25:23currently emerged.
- 25:25It's going to be dead within a week, I
- 25:26guarantee it.
- 25:28Should have the residual to hold it
- 25:29back. It's a nasty weed. Climbs up
- 25:31plants late in the season, wraps around
- 25:33your corn head reel, your corn head
- 25:35auger.
- 25:37You got to cut it off with a box cutter
- 25:39or a
- 25:40sawzall, whatever you have.
- 25:42It's a nightmare to harvest through.
- 25:45I had a brief chuckle with myself asking
- 25:47if we should just leave an entirely
- 25:49untreated check, then I realized I'm
- 25:51spraying a herbicide pass. Could be
- 25:53problematic.
- 25:55I don't plan on causing any extra
- 25:56trouble tonight. I told Ally I'd be home
- 25:59at 6:00, [music] and it's 8:30, and I've
- 26:01got another 50 acres to spray.
- 26:04Some lessons I just learn the hard way.
- 26:05I need to overestimate.
- 26:09I have roughly another 40 acres of Stilt
- 26:11left in that container. So, once that
- 26:13gets down to
- 26:15400 gallons, the bottom left corner,
- 26:19we'll dump that in.
- 26:21When I said 40 acres worth of product,
- 26:23[music] I really meant 33 acres. I'm
- 26:26actually a little shy of that 400
- 26:28gallons. So, this should be plenty
- 26:29stout. Get a good test here to finish
- 26:32this field. I'm really happy with how
- 26:34this turned out, and I should have shown
- 26:35you that other one before I switched
- 26:37fields. I'll show you when I'm done.
- 27:09>> Last pass of the night.
- 27:12Got one last field of corn to spray
- 27:14>> [music]
- 27:15>> where the corn is struggling to get up,
- 27:16so I'm not going to spray it yet. See
- 27:18what happens.
- 27:20There is the second trial I just
- 27:22finished up. The darker red color is the
- 27:25Acuron plus the next uh Stilt. We'll
- 27:28flip over to the first field we did.
- 27:33Zoom. Which one squares it up? Nope.
- 27:35Nope. Nope. Nope.
- 27:37No, not the Google Earth view.
- 27:41There.
- 27:43There's the first field.
- 27:44I'm done for the night. Helena's still
- 27:47out rolling. Hunter's on a 90-acre field
- 27:50right now. I imagine that's where he'll
- 27:52quit. Got rain moving in tomorrow. I
- 27:55will see you then.
- 27:57Happy to be caught up on spring. We've
- 28:00had a quarter inch of rain so far this
- 28:02morning.
- 28:03Sun's supposed to come back out. Wind's
- 28:05going to blow. It's going to get hot.
- 28:07This will dry it pretty quick, and then
- 28:09it's going to rain again tomorrow,
- 28:11allegedly.
- 28:13Here's my problematic corn field. I've
- 28:15not looked at it 48 hours.
- 28:19There's a lot more coming.
- 28:21I believe it will not be a total replant
- 28:24situation. Most likely spot in the thin
- 28:27spots. The rest, as long as it's over
- 28:3025,000 plants an acre, we'll just leave
- 28:33it. The corn plants will flex a little
- 28:35bit to compensate. It's the huge pockets
- 28:38with nothing that are concerning for
- 28:40yield potential.
- 28:41Here's someone else's farm right next
- 28:43door.
- 28:44A lot of folks are going to be in the
- 28:46same boat.
- 28:47You guys just follow me around or are
- 28:49there a lot of you?
- 28:52Oh, I probably ought to text you
- 28:54something productive.
- 28:56The sun's supposed to come out. Hard to
- 28:58believe right now. A little chilly.
- 29:01I'm starting the installation process
- 29:03for the Simmon's Innovation AccuVolume.
- 29:06I have a little bit of corn chemical in
- 29:08the sprayer still. I need to run it back
- 29:11into the tanker. I have a setup on the
- 29:12sprayer to do so. Once that's complete,
- 29:15I'll have to install this into the
- 29:17bottom of the solution tank, fill it
- 29:20back with water, and then use the rate
- 29:21controller to measure off the amount of
- 29:24liquid in the tank.
- 29:35Sure, it's a monstrosity, but it's my
- 29:38monstrosity.
- 29:41Reverse the flow.
- 29:45The line we're hooked into is my reclaim
- 29:47main return to the tank. We've got a
- 29:49selector valve on top. I either flow it
- 29:51back into the tank, or if I turn it like
- 29:54we just did, it goes into a new line I
- 29:57installed that just ties in and hangs
- 30:00off the back side of the machine. I can
- 30:02hook in a 2-in. The ugly looking 2-ft
- 30:05contraption coming off the tanker is
- 30:08actually a 2- to 3-in upsize into a
- 30:11check valve. So, the product won't flow
- 30:14back out of the tanker. I can use my
- 30:16main solution pump now to offload a
- 30:19majority of what's in the tank
- 30:22into the tanker. Got to have the check
- 30:25valve or it'll just flow out. Allegedly,
- 30:28138
- 30:30gallons.
- 30:31We'll see what it actually is.
- 30:34Or we won't. We have no idea if it's
- 30:35actually 138. It's going back in the
- 30:38tanker. Chris and Jeff were sweeping out
- 30:39the grain bin, so I've been going over
- 30:41to help when I have time.
- 30:43One load left in that one, and then we
- 30:45got that small Shivers bin, and then a
- 30:4848-footer on the south side. That's all
- 30:50the corn that remains here at the farm.
- 30:52Got a couple other bin sites with corn.
- 30:55This one, though, almost empty. Here we
- 30:57are, $3,500 later.
- 31:00A coozy for when you've had a long day
- 31:02spraying and you need a hard drink.
- 31:05So, the business cards are in the back
- 31:07of my truck bed now. Without having
- 31:08installed the system at all or used it,
- 31:10I've seen a lot of positive reviews. One
- 31:13aspect that really impressed me is that
- 31:14Steve, the owner and I believe the
- 31:17creator of this product, is readily
- 31:19available to talk to for any regular
- 31:21customer. I had a text conversation with
- 31:24him for how to do this on my sprayer. I
- 31:26assume anyone else could if they were
- 31:28looking at the product. I really like
- 31:30when a company supports their own
- 31:33technology to that degree. I understand
- 31:35some companies get so big it's
- 31:36impossible to do that. You need a chain
- 31:38of command.
- 31:39This seems like a relatively
- 31:42family-owned and operated company, so
- 31:43let's get her on. I spent a little too
- 31:45much. I definitely did not need the
- 31:47bulkhead kit. I wanted a flange fitting.
- 31:50So, this is coming off of the 1-in drain
- 31:52port on the side. That's what I'm
- 31:53working around, getting rid of. I need
- 31:55to step this up to that size of flange
- 31:58and then clamp it down. It'll sit on the
- 32:01side of the sprayer tank, assuming up is
- 32:04up, kind of at an angle, and the
- 32:06pressure of the liquid will push up
- 32:09against this sensor. I can't complete
- 32:11this install, though, cuz I don't have
- 32:12anything to get from here to this
- 32:16fitting, essentially, the stainless
- 32:17steel side on the tank. I'll have to run
- 32:19into the Rural King. They've surely got
- 32:21something that'll work. As is tradition,
- 32:23I ran into town, got all the parts I
- 32:25needed, then subsequently did not work
- 32:27on that project for the rest of the day.
- 32:30Fast forward through the weekend, I got
- 32:32to celebrate my 30th birthday this
- 32:34weekend. Very privileged to live the
- 32:36life I have and have such a great
- 32:38family. Everyone's healthy, mostly sane,
- 32:41and just in total, I really have no
- 32:43complaints about everything going on.
- 32:46I've been doing the videos here for 6
- 32:48years. This will be our sixth season of
- 32:50filming, I believe. You guys have been
- 32:52around for a long time. I've got a
- 32:54little bit less here to show for it. I
- 32:55don't know if that's from the farming or
- 32:57the videoing or most likely my wife and
- 33:00kids. Ali won't think that's as funny as
- 33:02I do. As I reflect back on everything, I
- 33:04just can't help but be appreciative of
- 33:07all the opportunities that have been
- 33:08bestowed upon me and all the fortune
- 33:10I've had to have a family that loves me,
- 33:13cares for me, an amazing wife, wonderful
- 33:15children, to get to do what so many
- 33:17people don't get to do either because
- 33:19they're not presented with these
- 33:21pathways or they don't have the length
- 33:23of life that I've had so far. I hope it
- 33:25goes for much longer. At this point time
- 33:27though, technically I have accomplished
- 33:29really some of the most important tasks.
- 33:31I'd love to be there a long time for my
- 33:33kids yet I got the privilege of bringing
- 33:35kids into this world and having an
- 33:37amazing wife.
- 33:39And I can't really say much more than
- 33:41that. Thank you guys for supporting me
- 33:42along the way.
- 33:45This rain looks kind of heavy.
- 33:57The timeliness of my installation makes
- 33:59this seem much more complicated than it
- 34:01is.
- 34:02If you had all this stuff ready to go, I
- 34:04think this is probably a 45-minute
- 34:06project not including putting water in
- 34:08your tank.
- 34:09Got this installed. There's the sensor.
- 34:11There's the feed that's going to run
- 34:13into the cab.
- 34:15I may have to clock out though because
- 34:18Mother Nature is sending another rain
- 34:20our way and this one's actually going to
- 34:22be pretty nasty. Hail,
- 34:24wind, lightning. The man in charge got
- 34:26in a little bit of a hurry this morning
- 34:27unhooking the field cultivator. He took
- 34:29the drawbar pin out, then he put the
- 34:31field cultivator down and it rolled
- 34:33backwards and the floating hitch just
- 34:35dropped to the ground. It's a classic
- 34:37Marty getting a hurry make a mistake
- 34:39type of deal. Yeah, that's a big rain
- 34:41coming. Look at that down there.
- 35:04It's awfully challenging to get anything
- 35:05done when your shop is outside.
- 35:09Anytime it rains or gets too cold or too
- 35:11windy,
- 35:13you got to quit or just get soaked, but
- 35:15nothing I'm doing is that important.
- 35:17Oh, someone's going to end up with a
- 35:18flood out of this.
- 35:20Please don't be us. We've already had
- 35:21ours.
- 35:23I don't want to wish it on someone else.
- 35:24I just don't want it for us.
- 35:29Looks like it's mostly going around or
- 35:30south.
- 35:32Not that those guys to our south need
- 35:33it.
- 35:36Thankfully, it was not us that ended up
- 35:38with the flood.
- 35:407/10 of rain.
- 35:43Pretty nice, really.
- 35:45How's my grade work looking?
- 35:47Decent.
- 35:50Head over to the Raindrop app. I like to
- 35:52look at the satellite imagery.
- 35:54This says we got 8600s at home. Weather
- 35:57station showed 0.69.
- 36:01Down here south of Effingham, they got
- 36:03hammered. 4 in
- 36:05in the last 24 hours. If you go to 72
- 36:07hours, oh, 5.5.
- 36:12There's the short straw winner of the
- 36:13day. Well, I'm in the project completion
- 36:16and engineering mood. I'm doing a few
- 36:18different things right here. I had my
- 36:20Midland radio on battery power. I think
- 36:23I'm going to switch it to key. So,
- 36:24here's that. I just had it wrapped
- 36:26around the lead. I'm going to put an
- 36:27actual clamp on it. Everything runs in
- 36:30back through the ports here. Need to do
- 36:32some work on my camera. Obviously, we're
- 36:34working on the AccuVolume 2. Need a
- 36:37bigger cap cuz I got a lot of things in
- 36:39here and a lot of them could spill and
- 36:40really upset me. Congratulations to the
- 36:43buyer of this sprayer in a few years if
- 36:45I ever trade it off. I've got this wired
- 36:47in down to the lower switch bank now and
- 36:50I think it's going to stay if I ever
- 36:53have to get rid of the sprayer.
- 36:55Here's the control box.
- 37:01Solution tank sensor is this one.
- 37:05There's a chart here on the side.
- 37:10My reasoning for going down here was
- 37:11just space. There's more space to put
- 37:13the box up in here.
- 37:21I think it'll just stay in there.
- 37:31There was just no way I could put it in
- 37:33here and also tuck the control unit down
- 37:36here. So, I ran that wire through there.
- 37:38I did still attach the Midland radio to
- 37:42the switch power up here.
- 37:45The ground is actually ran all the way
- 37:46down there. There's no grounds up here
- 37:48that I see unless I'm just missing them.
- 37:50I've got a lot of stuff packed in here.
- 37:52One eternity later, I've reorganized. I
- 37:55took the backup camera out. It wasn't
- 37:57working and I didn't want to mess around
- 37:59with it. The AccuVolume is mounted over
- 38:01here by my radio and extra display. It's
- 38:04on a phone holder, one of those
- 38:06grappling jaws. It came with a 3M
- 38:10double-sided adhesive sticker to mount
- 38:13it over here. I just don't really know
- 38:15how I would do that. The plug is on the
- 38:18backside, so I can't put it against a
- 38:20window.
- 38:21Don't really have anything I want to
- 38:22stick it to. You could probably fit it
- 38:25in there.
- 38:26That's adjustable. If I find something
- 38:28better, I can mess around with that
- 38:30another time. We are going to go ahead
- 38:32and program this. I'm full to the brim,
- 38:35which is more than 1,200 gallons. It's
- 38:37time for us all to learn together. This
- 38:40is the calibration page. I set it to a
- 38:431,200 gallon tank. It's assuming that
- 38:45the tank actually holds more than 1,200.
- 38:47It's starting us at 1,240. The current
- 38:50sensor reading is 2871.
- 38:52We are essentially going to spray off in
- 38:55increments you see here and enter those
- 38:57numbers. This will get us dialed in
- 39:00right now. It thinks we're at 2873
- 39:03and a full according data is 3,600.
- 39:07Let's get after it. To run this test
- 39:09using the rate controller sitting still,
- 39:12you essentially have to go to test
- 39:14speed.
- 39:15For whatever reason, it doesn't always
- 39:16take the first time.
- 39:18I put in 13.
- 39:21I think I'm too fast for it.
- 39:23Go slower. Nope, not that time either.
- 39:27Okay, maybe fifth time's a charm.
- 39:30Nope, sixth time.
- 39:32Oh, almost had it. Got to be quicker
- 39:34than that. It took me 11 tries for this
- 39:36to take. I have to do this every single
- 39:38increment and there is about 20
- 39:41increments I have to record. The sensor
- 39:43reading or the amount of weight it's
- 39:44picking up is there on the top, 1969,
- 39:471966. It's working its way down. After
- 39:51talking to Steve, he explained to me an
- 39:53issue I was having that I text him
- 39:55about. I'm going to hit the master
- 39:57switch right now. See we're at 1935,
- 39:59master off. Watch my sensor reading jump
- 40:02up. My question for Steve was, is that
- 40:05normal? Do I record where it's at when I
- 40:08stop or do I wait for it to level off
- 40:10over the next minute to two minutes? It
- 40:12goes about 50 points higher. Steve
- 40:14responded to my text message with a
- 40:17phone call in about 30 seconds. He
- 40:19explained to me that on my Hagie I have
- 40:21check valves both on the air intake and
- 40:24the overflow line. He said the sensor is
- 40:27so sensitive, as it should be, that the
- 40:29difference in pressure created by the
- 40:31suction in the tank [music] with no
- 40:34venting coming in or not enough venting
- 40:37actually messes up these readings. For
- 40:39this to work accurately, I either need
- 40:41to keep the lid open, which really is
- 40:43not a viable option field condition or
- 40:45as he recommended, I need to remove the
- 40:47check valve in the overflow line. He
- 40:49said I really need as much air as
- 40:51possible in there to make this accurate.
- 40:53So, I need to get the check valve off of
- 40:56the solution tank into the overflow
- 40:58line, so we don't get any kind of extra
- 41:01weight reading or lack of weight reading
- 41:03or any kind of lack of equilibrium in
- 41:05the tank. That's what we're going to do,
- 41:07and I appreciate Steve for calling me
- 41:10and telling me that before I wasted
- 41:11another 900 gallons trying to do this
- 41:14and not even get the right result. Here
- 41:16is the overflow and vent in question.
- 41:18Vent is over there, intake vent that is.
- 41:21The overflow's there, so if your water
- 41:23comes up, this is check valve, so it can
- 41:26only go in. You don't want to come out
- 41:27on top of your tank, it goes down to the
- 41:29bottom, dumps out the bottom. On the
- 41:31overflow, it's the opposite.
- 41:33Technically, it's not set up to pull in.
- 41:36However, we need more flow. It's a
- 41:38straight shot, but it's into the tank,
- 41:39so I think you'd be fine pulling that
- 41:42off and letting more air in if
- 41:57Yep, check valve.
- 41:59Right there.
- 42:00Here's the external mounting location.
- 42:02I'm not sure about that wire routing. I
- 42:04liked it at first. Looking at it from
- 42:06the ground, it looks terrible, so it may
- 42:08get moved. I load in both the front and
- 42:11the rear of the sprayer. Most of my
- 42:14loading is typically in the rear.
- 42:16Changes on every field though, so I put
- 42:17it in the middle. The only time this
- 42:19isn't going to be very helpful is
- 42:21fungicide season. I don't really need
- 42:23this for loading though. It's more of
- 42:26knowing the volume in the tank while I'm
- 42:28going through the field so I can make
- 42:30correct calculations, change my rate to
- 42:32not have a lot of overlap. Again,
- 42:35filling is not really where my concern
- 42:37lies.
- 42:38I know I'm full when it dumps out that
- 42:40thing on the bottom right there. I know
- 42:41this video's gone on for way too long
- 42:43based on how little space is on my
- 42:46memory card right now. Instead of
- 42:47dragging you on, I'll take care of this
- 42:49on my own and give you an update in the
- 42:51next video about the system. Hopefully
- 42:53we'll be out spraying either my last
- 42:56field of corn that needs sprayed or post
- 42:59spraying some of our March soybeans.
- 43:00They're getting pretty close to needing
- 43:02sprayed just on size alone. We're going
- 43:04to have good weather once the rains
- 43:06clear. I've got some replanting to do.
- 43:08I'm not looking forward to that. It's
- 43:10the nature of the beast and given how
- 43:12smooth our planting season was, little
- 43:14bit of spotting in isn't going to do us
- 43:16any harm. We may need the mental
- 43:17exercise. I'm going to end the video
- 43:19here though. I appreciate you all tuning
- 43:21in. I sure hope everything's going well
- 43:23on your farm or in your life and I'll
- 43:25see you in the next one. Have a great
- 43:26day everyone. Peace.
