- 0:00long time day I'm Jesse Weber tough
- 0:03questions for investigators Friday as
- 0:05attorneys in the Alec Murdock murder
- 0:07trial tried to persuade a jury that they
- 0:09know the truth of what happened on that
- 0:11June 9th in 2021. Murdoch is accused of
- 0:14killing his wife Maggie and his son Paul
- 0:16possibly to try to direct attention away
- 0:18from his financial misdeeds the mother
- 0:21and son were found shot to death in a
- 0:23huge Farm property that the Murdoch's
- 0:25own in South Carolina during Friday's
- 0:27testimony the prosecution and the
- 0:29defense grilled a South Carolina law
- 0:31enforcement division detective focusing
- 0:33a lot on the blood that was found on
- 0:35around the bodies as well as whether
- 0:37Alec Murdock had any blood on him now
- 0:40the detective testified that as far as
- 0:42she could see on the night of the night
- 0:43of Murdoch was clean from head to toe
- 0:46the prosecution seemed to be implying
- 0:48that this meant Murdoch did not actually
- 0:50try to roll over Maggie and Paul or
- 0:52check for sign life signs but the
- 0:54defense however used that apparent lack
- 0:55of blood on Murdoch's body and clothes
- 0:57to say he's not the shooter during
- 1:00testimony on Friday the Court the court
- 1:02saw and heard the first interview that
- 1:04Alec Murdock had with police inside of a
- 1:07police cruiser at the scene now we have
- 1:09some of that hour and a half long
- 1:10interview for you now
- 1:13when I came back here I mean I pulled up
- 1:16and I could see him and you know I knew
- 1:18something was bad I ran out I knew it
- 1:21was really bad
- 1:24my boy over there I could see it was
- 1:31laughs
- 1:34foreign
- 1:47I could see his brains
- 1:55[Music]
- 2:03and I ran over to Maggie and
- 2:06actually I think I tried to turn Paul
- 2:09over first
- 2:11um
- 2:13uh
- 2:14you know I tried to turn him over and uh
- 2:17I don't know I figured it out
- 2:19um
- 2:20his cell phone popped out of his pocket
- 2:23that's
- 2:24started to try to do something with it
- 2:27thinking maybe but then I put it back
- 2:29down really quickly
- 2:32um then I went to my wife and I
- 2:36I mean I could see hmm
- 2:39all right I'm joined by my co-host legal
- 2:41experts Brian buckmeyer Terry Austin
- 2:43Brian will start with you a lot to sort
- 2:46through today as all this evidence and
- 2:47the testimony what did you pick up on
- 2:49yeah Jesse so we're all watching the
- 2:51same thing there in the video trying to
- 2:53gauge whether or not Alec Murdock is
- 2:55faking it or truly in distress but as I
- 2:58listen to the detectives testimony there
- 3:00was one point in the detective testimony
- 3:01that stood out to me check this out
- 3:04you had a meeting and you you looked at
- 3:06uh some photos
- 3:09I believe crime scene photos and autopsy
- 3:11photos that sled right I did and you
- 3:14made a mental note and you put it in
- 3:15your record that that you notice a few
- 3:18strands of what appeared to be brown
- 3:19hair unable to determine the length from
- 3:22the photo in Maggie's hands and fingers
- 3:24right that is correct and you thought
- 3:27that that possibly was an indication of
- 3:29a struggle that Maggie can grab someone
- 3:31had their hair in her hands right I
- 3:34didn't say that in my report no
- 3:37well so why did you note it in your
- 3:39report
- 3:40because it was an observation
- 3:42yeah so I know there are a lot of people
- 3:45saying that's potentially dog hair could
- 3:47be human hair but that is reasonable
- 3:50doubt if the prosecution can't explain
- 3:52that away the defense can harp on that
- 3:54and again we always say this you just
- 3:56need one if one person can attach their
- 3:59theory of this case within the jury to
- 4:00say hey here's a lead they never chase
- 4:02down Alec Murdock is as Blonde as they
- 4:04come it could have been him that could
- 4:07be something the defense could really
- 4:08open up in this case and Terry people
- 4:10are wrestling with this case people have
- 4:11opinions about it one thing we never
- 4:12talked about is why do you think this
- 4:14trial is attracted such interest from so
- 4:16many people you know what this is an
- 4:18interesting case for a couple of reasons
- 4:20first of all the Fall From Grace it is a
- 4:23story that people are excited and
- 4:25interested sadly enough to hear about
- 4:28you know generations of solicitors in
- 4:31his family it's the same as you know the
- 4:33district attorney and the fact that he
- 4:36himself is an attorney in the community
- 4:38and now he's behind bars so I think
- 4:40that's one reason the other issue here
- 4:43is it is so convoluted the fact that he
- 4:46is addicted to drugs the fact that so
- 4:49many people have died I don't want to
- 4:51say under his watch but around him
- 4:53Gloria Satterfield his housekeeper this
- 4:56young boy who was found on the street
- 4:58hit by a car and he died you know
- 5:01obviously Mallory Beach the young woman
- 5:03who died in the boat accident when Paul
- 5:05was driving and now of course the murder
- 5:08of his wife and his son Paul so I
- 5:11definitely think people are interested
- 5:13in this story because it has so many
- 5:15components and it is such a big huge
- 5:18Fall From Grace Brian I'm going to throw
- 5:20this back with you on this because let
- 5:22me just ask you do you think it's the
- 5:23mystery component too I mean the idea of
- 5:26the unsolved mystery we saw it with
- 5:27co-burger we saw it with Gabby Patito I
- 5:30don't think there's a clear-cut answer
- 5:31here whether or not he did it or not
- 5:32absolutely Jesse in a lot of the cases
- 5:34that we follow and the ones that we
- 5:35really dig into it's not just the guilt
- 5:38that people and we are trying to analyze
- 5:40but whether or not the prosecutor is
- 5:42going to improve their case whether or
- 5:43not there is some piece of evidence that
- 5:45could go either way when reasonable
- 5:47Minds can disagree on a case that's what
- 5:49I think becomes so fascinating
- 5:50especially when you're talking about the
- 5:52criminal justice system how they're
- 5:54going to prove for example in this case
- 5:55whether or not Alec Murdock was in the
- 5:57area that the prosecution believes in to
- 5:59be you're gonna have to go into the
- 6:01science of cell phone pinging and
- 6:03whether or not there's enough Towers
- 6:04close by why is there no blood on his
- 6:06clothes he says that he's there treating
- 6:08them but we're watching him in there in
- 6:10the front seat of the police car and he
- 6:12seems to be as clean as the day that he
- 6:14probably walked into that that that that
- 6:16area and that scene and so those facts
- 6:18those issues those legal arguments and
- 6:21the fact that this person comes from a
- 6:22dynasty as you said a dynasty of uh
- 6:26prosecutors and Terry pointed out Fall
- 6:28From Grace there's so many elements in
- 6:29this case there's so many murders and
- 6:31Mysteries that no one can keep their
- 6:33eyes off of it unfortunately is very
- 6:35unique for all the wrong reasons stay
- 6:38with us for gavel to gavel coverage of
- 6:39this very high profile trial you can

- 6:50and welcome back everybody may recall
- 6:52the ongoing case of Doomsday cult Mom
- 6:55Lori vallo day Bell out in Idaho well in
- 6:57a new twist her defense team is trying
- 6:59to get the case thrown out altogether
- 7:01saying time is up for the prosecution
- 7:03Lori valadebell is being tried alongside
- 7:06her husband Chad dabell for the deaths
- 7:08of Lori's two children J.J valo and
- 7:10Tyler Ryan the death of Chad's first
- 7:12wife Tammy Davis was also included in
- 7:15the charges in a new defense motion to
- 7:17dismiss the case Lori's attorneys claim
- 7:19that the state violated their clients
- 7:21right to a speedy trial a speedy trial
- 7:23should happen within six months of the
- 7:25charges a new trial date is set for
- 7:27April of this year but the charges were
- 7:29filed in April of last year there have
- 7:31been so many delays to this trial
- 7:33including for Lori's own competency
- 7:35hearings but her team says even then
- 7:38she's been behind bars way too long in
- 7:41total she'll have spent nearly 1200 days
- 7:43in jail ruling from the judge is
- 7:46currently pending so Brian the Idaho
- 7:49statute for Speedy trials says that a
- 7:50case needs to go to trial in six months
- 7:52her defense team says it's going to be a
- 7:54thousand days before she goes to trial
- 7:56that just seems like simple math yeah
- 7:59unfortunately Jesse the most difficult
- 8:01thing for lawyers is just that simple
- 8:02amount but the way I explain it to
- 8:04people the right to a speedy trial is
- 8:06not that six months exactly the same the
- 8:08analogy I give is you've never seen an
- 8:10NBA basketball game end in 48 minutes
- 8:13even though each quarter is only 12
- 8:15minutes because there's halftime on
- 8:17timeouts there's commercial breaks
- 8:19things like that and throughout the
- 8:20pendency of a case there's also the
- 8:22stopping and starting of that right to a
- 8:24speedy trial clock uh emotion could stop
- 8:27the clock the pendency evaluation could
- 8:29stop the clock and so when you talk
- 8:31about six months you have to look in
- 8:32between the gaps in which that time is
- 8:35running the other question here is Chad
- 8:38day Bell waived his right to a speedy
- 8:39trial Lori did not how does that work
- 8:42out when one co-defendant waves but the
- 8:44other does not and their cases are
- 8:46joined together every state interprets
- 8:48this right under this sixth amendment
- 8:49differently it's just going to be a
- 8:51matter of how this very complex math
- 8:52plays out when you think about when the
- 8:54clock starts and stops don't worry this
- 8:56case isn't complicated enough just add
- 8:58this on no no big deal so Terry you know
- 9:01what I'm going to ask you
- 9:03any possibility
- 9:05this could actually happen any chance
- 9:07her case is going to be dismissed
- 9:09absolutely not listen these are
- 9:12extremely serious charges the fact that
- 9:14both of them have been accused of murder
- 9:17of the children JJ and Tyler and there's
- 9:19no question that they're not going to
- 9:21get out and Lori asking I think this
- 9:24motion is frankly ludicrous the fact
- 9:27that because there's been a delay she's
- 9:29caused most of those delays and she's
- 9:32saying oh I think the case should be
- 9:34dismissed because of the delays that's
- 9:36not going to fly with the judge and true
- 9:39judge Boyce has said he's a little bit
- 9:41concerned about the fact that she's been
- 9:43behind bars for so long but I don't
- 9:46think he's going to look at that as an
- 9:48opportunity to dismiss the case one of
- 9:50the things Brian said that I think is
- 9:51really true perhaps this case should not
- 9:53have been joined in the first place Chad
- 9:56is asking for different relief he's
- 9:58saying let's postpone till further
- 10:00notice basically and she is saying oh I
- 10:03want a speedy trial that in and of
- 10:05itself I think could give the judge some
- 10:08opportunity to think about even now
- 10:10separating these two cases because their
- 10:13interests are not the same and in my
- 10:15opinion they've never been the same so
- 10:17we'll see what happens it's a textbook
- 10:19example A lot of times people wonder why
- 10:21do trials they don't happen until so
- 10:23many years later kind of seeing it here
- 10:24Brian Terry thanks so much everyone out
- 10:26there thank you so much we'll see you
- 10:28next time as we discuss Justice in
- 10:30America
